Drew Phillips and I were looking over the RM docket for tonight's auction and realized something: There are going to be more $1m+ vehicles going up on the block tonight than any other night we can remember. Among the highlights include 300 SL coupes, Daytona Spiders, a Ferrari 750 Monza and one magical Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadsterthat's sure to hit upwards of $5,000,000.

We'll be live-blogging it all after the jump, and just as an explainer: all prices listed include a 10 percent commission for the auction house, so if something - say, the 300SL above - hammers at $760,000, the final price would be $836,000. We'll just be listing the gavel price. And with that, let's get to it.
Continue reading 2011 RM Auctions in Monterey - LIVE BLOG

2011 RM Auctions in Monterey - LIVE BLOG originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 20 Aug 2011 22:41:00 EST.
To date, RM has auctioned off 199 vehicles priced over one million dollars. And here's number 200.

Tonight in Monterey, RM Auctions put Steve McQueen's 1970 Porsche 911S on the block and after a starting bid of $200,000 the Porsche's price shot up to over one million before slowly coming to rest at $1.1m. Then $1.15, $1.2 and finally $1.25 million.

The 911, seen in the opening scenes of the racing epic, LeMans, was McQueen's personal car throughout the filming and has racked up a total of 112,000 miles over the last 41 years. We don't know who the final bidder was, but we do know she's here in the States, and she had to beat out a very determined overseas buyer.

UPDATE: The final sale price came in at $1.35 million - $100,000 additional for auction fees.
Steve McQueen's 1970 Porsche 911S goes for $1.25 million at RM [UPDATED] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 20 Aug 2011 01:47:00 EST.
"Mercury is a brand sending a message that modern design will lead its rejuvenation. Mercury is returning to its roots as a design leader introducing the Messenger concept, a distinctive and energetic high-performance two-seat sports coupe." So said Ford's former interplanetary brand when it introduced the Mercury Messenger at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Needless to say, that hoped-for rejuvenation never actually panned out.

As much as we'd like to say that Ford spent a few hundred million giving Mercury a much-needed halo car instead of shuttering the brand entirely, it didn't happen and the reality is that the eight generation of the Mercury Cougar went on to be the last non-Ford-based automobile ever to roll off the showroom floor. Sad, no?

Perhaps all is not lost, however. According to Automotive Traveler, the 2003 Mercury Messenger Concept is about to go under the gavel at the RM Auction during the festivities at Pebble Beach on August 13 and 14. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Because the car was nothing more than a styling exercise, there's no drivetrain in the Messenger... but we'd like to think that some willing participant will find a way to make it all go down the road with a brand spankin' new 5.0-liter V8 underhood.

Looks like the economy might be doing okay after all. The massive Nick Alexander Woodie Collection brought a combined $7 million to kick off the week's auctions in Monterey. One of the most extensive collections of Ford and Mercury Woodies in the world, Alexander's collection was auctioned off by RM Auctions on Thursday night in Monterey. Top seller was a gorgeous 1946 Mercury Sportsman Convertible (above) that went across the block and sold at $368,500.

Other highlights included a super rare 1948 Ford Super Deluxe Sportsman Convertible that went for "just" $275,000, and an awesome, all-wheel-drive 1946 Ford Super Deluxe Station Wagon that brought $247,500. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will be going to support the Midland School in Santa Barbara, California. There's a full press release after the jump and full results at the RM website.

People come together when disaster strikes. So when an earthquake claimed nearly 300 lives in Italy's Abruzzo region last month, Fiat donated a specially-equipped Ducato van to the emergency relief crew so that the Pope could tour the stricken region and visit the victims. Following its parent company's lead, Ferrari has announced that it will be donating a special one-off F430 to help the cause.

The special edition will be the very last F430 to roll off the line later this year, in effect confirming the arrival of its oft-spied replacement. Painted in special two-tone silver and gold, the colors of the Aquila - the city most directly impacted by the disaster - the one-off will be outfitted with extra equipment from Ferrari's Carrozzeria Scaglietti customization catalog and accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the company's president Luca di Montezemolo. The vehicle will be auctioned off to the highest donor at RM Auction's upcoming Leggenda e Passione event at the Ferrari factory in Maranello next weekend, with proceeds going towards disaster relief. Details in the press release after the jump.

[Source: Ferrari]
Continue reading Ferrari to auction off special F430 for Abruzzo earthquake relief

Ferrari to auction off special F430 for Abruzzo earthquake relief originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 May 2009 16:30:00 EST. Over a four-year period, Fioto ripped, welded and pilfered, borrowing heavily from the Lincoln and Cadillac parts bin. Exploring your way around the car is the equivalent of an automotive jigsaw puzzle. Identify one piece and then sit bemused about where the next line or bulge will lead.

After being bathed in Bath and Body Works lavender, focus was drawn to the engine bay were a small-block V8 found a home. The Bubble's heart was chromed, polished and equipped with a half-dozen carbs, ensuring some measure of performance wasn't left out of the equation.

Already a prize-winning ride, "Chopit" expects his bubble-top beauty to find an owner willing to buy at the right price. That price you ask? Appraisals for the "Beatnik" are in the $350,000 to $450,000 range.

[Source: Motor Trend]
Bubbletop Beatnik at the Monterey RM auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Jul 2006 18:05:00 EST.
