We're saddened to report the death of John G. Smale. Considered an outsider to the automotive industry upon his appointment, Smale served as chairman of General Motors from November 1992 to the end of 1995.

A member of GM's board since 1982, Smale was named chairman at a difficult turning point for the automaker. With the economy in recession and the first Gulf War waging in the Middle East, GM's profits were at a long-time low; it was burdened with overwhelming overhead costs and its vehicles were selling slowly. The traditionally linked role of chairman and CEO was split in two, with Smale named chairman and John F. Smith Jr. named chief executive.

Under their joint leadership, Smale and Smith (who eventually replaced him) shook things up in Detroit and turned around GM's financial fortunes from the brink of collapse. Having served as president, CEO and chairman of Procter & Gamble during the 1980s, Smale continued to serve on the GM board through 2002. He passed on Saturday at the age of 84. Our thoughts and condolences are with his bereaved friends and family.
Former GM chair John Smale dead at 84 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 20 Nov 2011 12:02:00 EST.
Bad news, it seems, does come in threes, as we're grieved to report the passing of Marco Simoncelli. The MotoGP rider succumbed to injuries sustained this weekend at the Malaysian Grand Prix, his death coming barely a week after those of Indy 500 champion Dan Wheldon and Baja racer Rick Huseman.

A promising Italian rider, Simoncelli advanced just last year to the top-tier MotoGP series after making a name for himself in the feeder classes. He was a force to be reckoned with in the Italian Minimoto Championship in the late 90s, won the European championship (as well as several World Championship races) in the 125cc class for Aprilia and took the 250cc World Championship for Gilera in 2008. He advanced to the MotoGP series last season, riding for the Gresini Honda team, for whom he took a second-place finish just last week in Australia.

Disaster struck, however, on the second lap of the Malaysian Grand Prix today where he lost control of his Honda racing bike and was hit by fellow riders Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi as he slid across the track. He laid there motionless, his helmet having come off in the incident, until an ambulance brought him to the trackside infirmary where he was subsequently pronounced dead. He was 24.

The tragedy marks the first death in MotoGP since the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix where Daijiro Kato, also of the Gresini team, was killed. However Shoya Tomizawa was killed a little over a year ago in the Moto2 race at San Marino.

Our hearts go out to Simoncelli's family, friends and colleagues. Follow the jump to watch the incident unfold.
Continue reading MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli dies in race accident [w/video]

MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli dies in race accident [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 23 Oct 2011 06:59:00 EST. Gabriel (1940 - 2010), passed away at the age of 69 after battling kidney disease.

Gabriel came up with the signature turn of phrase while auditioning to do the voiceover work for commercials advertising the U.S. 30 dragstrip in Indiana. A delay feature built into his tape recorder allowed Mr. Gabriel to pull off the unique repeat effect, and the rest, as they say, is history. He would go on to record fresh spots every week throughout the 1980s for events at U.S. 30 and other tracks around the country, bringing the "Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!" line national.

Mr. Gabriel also produced and hosted the motorsports-themed television show, "Super Chargers," and his production company helped popularize monster trucks by pushing them into into the spotlight during the '80s. Jan Gabriel is survived by his wife, Theresa, and daughter, Amanda. Follow the jump for video of one of the old U.S. 30 television featuring his famous tagline.

[Sources: Chicago Tribune, JanCGabriel.com]
Continue reading R.I.P. His massive body of work reads like a history of 20th-century filmed entertainment, with appearances in everything from Bonanza to Hawaii Five-O to even Dora the Explorer. Perhaps best known for playing Fantasy Island's Mr. Rourke from 1978 to 1984, Montalban's memorable role as Khan Noonien Singh in the 1967 Star Trek episode, "Space Seed," would be reprised on the silver screen 15 years later in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It's arguably the best Star Trek film, due in very large part to Montalban's mesmerizing performance. But for those of us of a certain age, he'll also be forever remembered for making the phrase "Corinthian Leather" part of the lexicon. And as you'll see after the jump, he did it with style. Rest in peace, Ricardo.

[Source: AP]

Ricardo Montalban, RIP originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 21:30:00 EST. He became famous for his regular interviews of each year's winner of the Indy 500 from Victory Lane at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and served as a reporter and anchor for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network reporter from 1953 to 1989, as well as being its chief in 1988 and 1989. Palmer was also an announcer on the CART radio network in the mid-90s before retiring some 10 years ago.

There were no eulogies. No bagpipes were played or honor-guard gunshots fired. Few paid any notice, but on December 21, the Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible passed quietly into the night and was buried. And we doubt many will miss it.

The axing of the ragtop PT is part of the phasing-out of several Chrysler LLC products devised by its new owners in order to cut costs. Earlier we brought you the news that the Chrysler Crossfire ceased production in Germany. Before that, the Chrysler Pacifica ended its lifecycle in November. Although originally only the convertible version of the PT Cruiser was scheduled for execution, reports later suggested that the regular hard-top wagon version could also be discontinued.

While those Chryslers likewise won't be terribly missed, except by small pockets of devoted enthusiasts, the next to lie under the Chrysler LLC guillotine will be the Dodge Magnum, which is being discontinued in March. The gonzo wagon dropped 25% in sales in 2007 over the previous year. As Inside Line points out, however, if you're still keen on getting a Magnum (or a PT convertible, for that matter), some good deals are likely to be had from local dealers eager to sell the last remnants of a dying breed.

We're saddened to report the passing of James Robert Stewart, former racing driver, eldest member of the Stewart racing family and older brother to triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart.

Although his own racing career was rather unremarkable, he would later act as the inspiration for his younger brother Jackie to begin racing. The brothers grew up in Dumbarton, Scotland, where father Bob was a Jaguar dealer. Jimmy began racing at hill-climb events, later moving up to sportscars, racing Healeys, Bristols, Coopers, Jaguars and Aston Martins in numerous racing series. He raced at the 1953 British Grand Prix for Ecurie Ecosse and several times at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After a number of crashes, breaking the same arm twice, Jimmy retired from racing. Ten years later he helped his younger brother Jackie get into racing, who went on to win the world championship three times.

Sir Jackie reportedly cut short a vacation to be by his brother's side when he died this past Thursday, January 3, at age 76. The funeral will take place on Tuesday, January 8, and a traditional Scottish thanksgiving service will be held next month in Scotland. Jimmy is survived by his son and daughter; our condolences to the entire Stewart family.

We rang up the General for confirmation and received word that the Monte Carlo is indeed being offed. May 4th will reportedly be the last day you can order a Monte Carlo and production of the car at GM's Oshawa plant in Canada will cease on June 20th. Apparently production of the Monte Carlo is being cancelled to make room for all those extra Malibu orders the automaker is expecting when the new 2008 model sedan begins production in October. This is the sixth generation Monte Carlo, and when asked if we'd see the name return on a new model in the near future, we got the canned answer from GM, "We do not comment on future product." Sigh. Monte Carlo sales were off 64.2% in January of 2007 with only 1,639 units being sold. In 2006, 34,113 units were sold, a slight improvement over 2005.

[Source: GM, GM Inside News]
RIP: Chevy kills off Monte Carlo originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Feb 2007 17:31:00 EST. Clay was killed yesterday when he collided with a truck in the northern Italian city of Parma, where he was reportedly driving at high speed and failed to stop in time as he met an unexpected traffic jam.

Born in the Italian sector of Switzerland only days after the end of World War II, Clay Regazzoni rose through the ranks all the way to Formula One, where he raced alongside such greats as Niki Lauda and Jacky Ickx at such teams as Ferrari and Williams. Clay's record includes five grand prix victories, and he was known as a particularly reckless driver.

In 1980 Regazzoni was paralyzed from the waist down when the brakes on his Ensign F1 car failed during the grand prix at Long Beach, resulting in a terrible crash that sent his car flying into a concrete barrier at the end of the straightaway. In subsequent years, Clay fought an often uphill battle for certification to compete in racing cars modified with hand controls, and found success racing in off-road rallies as well as in endurance sportscar racing.

Clay was only 67 upon his death. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
