We're saddened to report the passing of well-known and highly-respected motorsports writer and radio personality David Poole, who covered NASCAR for The Charlotte Observer for the last 13 years. Poole's career began in 1981 after earning a Morehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The NASCAR community is showing its respect for the late journalist in impressive fashion, and team owner Rick Hendrick plans to place Carolina blue decals on each of his four race cars for this weekend's race in honor of Poole's alma mater.

Poole, a four-time winner of the National Motorsports Press Association's writer of the year, was just 50 years old at the time of his death and is survived by his wife, two sons, daughter, and one grandson.
