Canuck mob takes out frustration on hapless BMW M5 - Click above to watch videos after the jump

Sure, Canadians might seem tame and pacifist. But not when it comes to hockey. Once the skates go on, the gloves come off. And that combative attitude has been known to spill over into the streets, particularly when the local team has been handed a tough defeat in a pivotal game. Like last week's seventh-round decider in the Stanley Cup Finals between the Boston Bruins and the Vancouver Canucks.

After the Bruins (belated spoiler alert!) nabbed the title in the last game at Vancouver's home-turf Rogers Arena, local fans spilled into the streets in a riot you'd more likely expect to see in south-central LA. Disappointment turned into mob mentality as fans broke windows and lit dumpsters on fire. Which is a shame enough for the storefronts and sanitation workers, but for the love of God, people, leave cars out of it. Only they didn't.

As you'll see from the videos after the jump, rioters started overturning cars and lighting them on fire, leaving one girl to defend a BMW M5 (presumably her own) against the menacing hoards. She and a friend appear to have fought valiantly on behalf of one of Europe's finest pieces of engineering, but there's unfortunately little to be done in the face of disheartened - and inebriated - Canadian hockey fans.

Follow the jump for a pair of videos - the first a shorter report from the local news affiliate and another slightly longer depicting various scenes from the riots.
Continue reading Woman valiantly defends BMW M5 against Vancouver rioters

Woman valiantly defends BMW M5 against Vancouver rioters originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Jun 2011 19:01:00 EST. However, not only did South Korea's fifth largest automaker once build Jeeps for the U.S. Army, in the 1970s they changed their name to Dong-A Motor. Obviously, they have since reconsidered. These days, they owe about half a billion dollars to various creditors and suppliers. As such, SsangYong managment has decided to go ahead and liquidate some assets and fire 37% of the company.

Not so fast, says The Wall Street Journal. According to the daily fishwrapper, a group of recently fired workers at an auto plant in Pyeongtaek occupied the shuttered plant several weeks ago and they have been using slingshots and molotov cocktails against approaching riot police in the lead up to Tuesday's raid. Until the raid, police responded by dropping tear gas on the workers from helicopters.

Finally, the police have attacked and about 80 commandos backed by choppers retook a few buildings. However, they have stopped short of capturing the highly flammable paint shop where between 500 and 540 strikers are still holed up. Said a union rep over the possibility of a raid on the paint shop, "We will respond to it, bracing ourselves for death."

[Source: The Wall Street Journal | Image: Jung Yeon-Je/Getty]
REPORT: Police storm occupied SsangYong factory after dropping tear gas from helicopters originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 18:00:00 EST.
Raze 1,000-acres of farmland to build an automobile factory, and somebody is going to protest. Even in India. The automaker is Tata, and the protesters numbered at least 1,000 strong as they went head-to-head against police in eastern India yesterday at the future manufacturing site of the Tata Nano (rumored to be the world's cheapest car at just $2,380). The protests are rooted deeper than just "open space" issues. In fact, the real tension is between India's ruling party, and the communist-run government in West Bengal where the plant is to be located. The farmers are unwilling to part with their agricultural livelihood, while the government continues to promote industry. After blocking a highway for a few hours, the stick-wielding protesters were dispersed without injuries. Once again, progress wins out over pastures.

To those people, the Talon Riot Control Vehicle would be considered the best weapon for suburban warfare. It was featured once on Top Gear in which Richard Hammond demonstrated the armored vehicle's unique capabilities. Neighborhood kids dropping malatov cocktails on your front lawn? No problem, the Talon can be fitted with a water cannon to put out the flames and a grenade launcher to ensure those kids will learn their lesson. In its current state the Talon has been decommissioned and comes with those aggressive add-ons wound in bubble wrap and stored in the rear, though the seller says it can be refitted with them easily. The Talon can still, however, drive through a building, as the Hamster demonstrates in this video, and keep right on going. There's even a fridge and bathroom on board in case you battle with the spouse and need some place to crash. This isn't the first time the Talon has found its way on eBay. It appears that back in 2003 it was sold on the site for somewhere around $85,000. With only 19 hours left to go on the current auction and no reserve price in sight, this thing is going to be a steal at or around the current bid price of $10,000.

Great tip, Josh!

[Source: eBay]
eBay Find of the Day: The Talon Riot Control Vehicle from Top Gear originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Feb 2007 15:56:00 EST.
