At 6:55PM PST on Wednesday, engines across the world were revved in unison to honor the late Carroll Shelby, who passed away last Thursday at the age of 89. The raucous tribute was organized by the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, which followed up the synchronized salute of RPMs with an evening of remembrance hosted by Jay Leno and attended by a litany of the auto world's most revered members, including Parnelli Jones, Phil Remington, Don Prudhomme, Linda Vaughn, Ed Pink, Edsel Ford II and Dan Gurney, among others both famous and just friends of Shelby.

The evening was called "Carroll Shelby A Life Remembered," and drew 1,200 to the Petersen Museum in LA. Autoweek was there and shares some nice anecdotes from a few of the evening's speakers here.

Outside of LA, though, many other gatherings were hosted around the world where teams of idling Shelby automobiles - Mustangs, Cobras, GT500s and more - waited for the clock to strike 6:55. Scroll down for some videos of the mass revving that occurred in Carroll's honor last night, as well as some other interesting tribute videos we found.

Continue reading Shelby fans around the globe give tribute with "moment of noise"

Shelby fans around the globe give tribute with "moment of noise" originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 May 2012 16:58:00 EST. 'Tis the season once again. We were scratching our heads wondering what to get the car-obsessed men and women in our lives, so we made some lists. This first list contains ideas for stuff that goes under the tree, the kind of car gifts that don't cost an arm and a leg but go over well with the auto lovers in your family.

Since there are approximately one trillion iPhones in the world and about ten-times as many apps, it's not hard to find a program to suit your needs. But in the automotive sphere, there aren't nearly as many quality applications and even fewer that can deliver the information most gearheads crave. Thankfully, DevToaster has answered the call with Rev, and putting out the 2.0 release of its popular diagnostic and performance program.

In addition to offering code-reading and clearing features, along with OBD metrics for everything from coolant temp to throttle position (full features here), Rev includes built-in metrics for lateral and forward acceleration to calculate horsepower and torque, saved vehicles, GPS tracking and data-logging. In a bid to make the program more user friendly on the fly, it's reworked its interface to make it easier to edit the visual representations for the virtual (and customizable) gauges and graphs.

Although it's $39.99 App Store price seems like a deal considering its capabilities, the steep price of the company's wireless OBD-II controller ($149.99, pictured at right) is slightly harder to swallow. However, DevToaster is working on bringing the cost of the unit down in the near future and hopes to bring out both a series of "fun," "green" utilities and has talked with Google about developing a version for Android phones. Look for a full review of the 2.0 software soon.
Continue reading SEMA 2009: Rev for iPhone reaches 2.0, includes data-logging [w/ VIDEO]

SEMA 2009: Rev for iPhone reaches 2.0, includes data-logging [w/ VIDEO] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 10:24:00 EST. However, even with increasing oil prices, the all electric market remains a small niche. The limited vehicle range, long charging time and lack of charging infrastructure for those who park on the street have left a sizable chunk of potential customers out of reach. Now it seems that Tesla Motors will no longer alienate the general market with their product lineup. They have announced that the Whitestar Sedan, in development for release sometime around the end of 2009, will be offered with two powertrain options. One choice will be the familiar all electric version with an expected range somewhere between 150 and 200 miles and the other choice will be an extended-range vehicle aka REV.

The REV Whitestar will have the ability to go 40 to 50 miles off a fully charged battery pack. It will also feature a small gasoline engine that will have the task of recharging the batteries while the vehicle is in use. With a full tank of fuel the REV should see a range of 400 miles before it needs a trip to the gas station. Obviously, this is a similar setup to GM's Chevrolet Volt concept. The Whitestar Sedan will be aimed at a different market than the Volt though. Luxury manufactures, such as BMW and Lexus, are the intended competition and fittingly, the REV Whitestar's price will fall somewhere between $50,000 and $70,000 depending on the size of the battery pack.

[Source: CNET News]
Tesla Whitestar to be offered as both an EV and a REV originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 08:02:00 EST.
