This commercial starts off quietly enough, with some potential customers arriving at a Renault dealership in England for a test drive of the new Clio compact with a salesman. The drive route takes them to a nondescript intersection where the customer is told to try out the "Va Va Voom" button, and that's where the Frenchy action begins when a pop-up theatrical production materializes around the car, with everything from baguette-selling cart pushers to young lovers in the crosswalk to burlesque dancers putting on a show.

And in case beautiful women strutting around in lingerie isn't really your thing, there's a more dude-centric version below, too. You can check them both out by scrolling below, but be aware, the vids might be Not Safe For Work.
Continue reading Renault sells French sex appeal with stripped-down dancers, 'va va voom' button

Renault sells French sex appeal with stripped-down dancers, 'va va voom' button originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 Mar 2013 14:58:00 EST.
While we wait for the 2013 Renault Clio RS to come out from under its camo, the fourth-geneeration Clio hatch it's based on has just been fully revealed. The new car has been given gifts from every department: it's lost 220 pounds, its design showcases the French marque's new corporate identity, under the hood it gets new engines (including the company's first three-cylinder), a dual-clutch transmission, and infotainment moves on a step with the customizable R-Link touchscreen system and R-Link app store.

This Clio will only come as a five-door hatch, but it offers a serious amount of personalization options inside and out to separate each car from what will likely be a very large herd. In addition to the contrasting colors available on everything from the grille insert to the steering wheel, the R-Link home screen can be arranged according to user preference, and the app R-Link ecosystem is being encouraged by Renault's appeals to developer talent and startups. There's also the slightly gimmicky R-Sound Effect, which can pipe "six different engine sound profiles" into the cabin when you tire of the natural, small-displacement exhaust note.

More substantive developments are found under the hood, in the form of an available three-cylinder turbocharged, 0.9-liter TCe 90 gas engine with 90 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque. Other engine choices include a 1.2-liter TCe 120 gas with 120 horsepower and the 1.5-liter dCi 90 diesel with 90 hp and 162 lb-ft. The latter two powerplants will be paired with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The new Clio will go on sale early next year. Before then we'll see it at the Paris Auto Salon in September, and before that you can learn almost everything there is to know about it in the high-res gallery of photos and the press release and numerous videos below.
Continue reading New Renault Clio comes with six different engine sounds [w/videos]

New Renault Clio comes with six different engine sounds [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Jul 2012 16:00:00 EST.
A new Renault Clio is due to be revealed at the 2012 Paris Motor Show in September, and based on these spy shots, it appears that also means a reveal of the Clio RS. Caught by the lenses at CarPix, several changes to this model versus the standard Clio seem to identify it as the hot hatch: larger front intakes, wheels and brakes, front LEDs relocated to the bumper, and a diffuser between twin pipes out back.

Rumors suggest that a 200-horsepower turbocharged four should be under the hood. Paired with the new Clio's sharper looks and Renault's proven handling chops, the Clio RS should have no problem staying relevant. We'll know more when we get to Paris, but for now there's the gallery of high-res spy photos.
Next Renault Clio RS spotted nearly ready to hatch originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Jun 2012 17:30:00 EST.
We don't need to tell you why rally racing - though awesome - is incredibly dangerous. As much as we love to watch turbocharged, all-wheel-drive Euro hatches being flung around on dirt, gravel, snow and tarmac, the fact that many of these races go through small towns and wooded trails leaves plenty of room for disaster.

Case in point: This Renault Clio racer went off course during the 2012 Mazowiecki Rally, leaving driver Patrick Osowiecki and navigator Maciej Wrona trapped upside-down in a lake. According to CarScoop, no race officials were near the scene of the accident, but some selfless spectators rushed in to attempt to free Osowiecki and Wrona from their racecar. Scroll down to watch the action unfold.
Continue reading Watch spectators rush to save lives of rally drivers trapped in capsized Renault

Watch spectators rush to save lives of rally drivers trapped in capsized Renault originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 May 2012 19:45:00 EST.
As a Formula One entity, Renault has gone from engine supplier to full manufacturer (having acquired the Benetton team back in 2000) and back to engine supplier (having all but completely divested the team now under the Lotus banner). The French automaker's competition engine works also powers Caterham and Williams this season, but most importantly, the Red Bull Racing team that is returning once again as World Champions. So whereas previous Renaultsport special edition hot hatches celebrated the company's own achievements, the latest celebrates Red Bull's.

Named the Red Bull RB7 edition after last year's car, the special Clio RS packs a 203-horsepower four mounted to the Cup chassis that would otherwise be an option. The body is painted matte black with yellow highlights, a tone-on-tone checkerboard roof, the requisite special badging and 18-inch wheels done up in a black finish and shod with the same Bridgestone rubber that kept the Mégane Trophy glued to the Nürburgring for its lap record.

Inside it's got yellow Recaro buckets and the RS Monitor performance telematics system. The special edition will only be available, however, in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and Spain. Details to be found in the press release after the jump with high-res images in the gallery above.
Continue reading Renault celebrates Red Bull partnership with special edition Clio RS

Renault celebrates Red Bull partnership with special edition Clio RS originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 14:30:00 EST.
We've seen plenty of tablets embedded into concepts and project cars, but Renault looks to be the first major automaker to bring a fully functional and embedded tablet into a production vehicle. And it's doing it in two new cars due to arrive next year.

At the LeWeb consumer electronics show in France, Renault unveiled R-Link, a voice-activated telematics platform that combines entertainment, navigation and social functions into a single, integrated seven-inch touchscreen display.

The tablet - which we assume is removable, so this isn't just a glorified touchscreen - can be controlled through either voice commands, the screen or the steering wheel, and Renault claims that 50 apps will be available when it launches on both the new Clio and Zoe models next year.

Navigation is provided by TomTom and Renault is courting developers to bring even more apps to market. However, the French automaker remains mum on specs and the operating system, both of which could pose a challenge to devs. Hit the jump for the release.
Continue reading Renault integrating custom tablet into 2012 Zoe and Clio

Renault integrating custom tablet into 2012 Zoe and Clio originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Dec 2011 18:27:00 EST.
Renault's handling of its Gordini revival has been disappointing. After starting off with Gordini appearance packages on the Renaultsport Clio and Twingo performance cars, Renault has elected to just dilute the Gordini moniker by applying it to the base Twingo and Wind Roadster, budget vehicles with no more sporting pretension than the stripes slapped on 'em. Now the base Clio is getting an all-show, no-go Gordini package as well.

It replaces the GT model and includes offset racing stripes, contrasting white trim, 16-inch wheels, Gordini-specific interior accents, and the requisite special badges. Engine choices for the three- or five-door hatchback are a 128-horsepower gasoline-burning four or a 105-hp diesel.

It's a far cry from the Gordini models of yore, or from the Clio RS Gordini that at least does the name some justice. See for yourselves in the attached image gallery and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Renault stripes up the base Clio with Gordini edition

Renault stripes up the base Clio with Gordini edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 14:03:00 EST.
Back in the early '90s, Renault and Williams were dominating Formula One, and their success spilled over into one of the most celebrated hot hatches of all time. And now that the two are getting back together for the 2012 season, rumors are afoot that they'll collaborate on a revival that could prove one very tasty beast indeed.

Keen to avoid simply cashing in on - or cheapening - the name, Renault isn't likely to slap on a new coat of paint and some special badges (much as it did with the Gordini brand) and call it a day. Instead, word on the street is that the new Clio Williams could pack as much as 240 horsepower.

That's significantly more than the current Renaulsport Clio's 197 horses, and comes within striking distance of its big brother, the 247-hp Renaultsport Megane. The package could also include a chassis setup based on the RS Clio Cup, but with the Sachs dampers from the more hardcore 2005 Clio Trophy and the brakes and rolling stock from the Nürburgring-conquering Megane Trophy.

With an all-new Clio coming around the bend next year, the Williams edition could prove the ultimate send-off for one of Europe's favorite hot hatches.
Renault and Williams to team up again for new 240hp Clio hot hatch? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 08:59:00 EST.
With the British Grand Prix coming up this weekend, Renault has launched a pair of special edition hot hatches to join its new Megane Trophy.

Based on the existing Twingo Renaultsport 133 and Clio Renaultsport 200, the Silverstone GP editions upgrade on their already considerable levels of specification with such special touches as silver paint with contrasting black wheels, roof and mirror housings, tinted rear windows, Silverstone badges, Renaultsport Monitor performance tracking systems and the competition-focused Cup suspension as standard.

The Twingo also gets a black spoiler and fog light surrounds and a stainless exhaust, while the Clio gets Recaro buckets and Bluetooth connectivity. Each model will be limited to 50 individually numbered examples, exclusive to the UK, and come with special driving instruction around the grand prix circuit for which they're named. Check 'em out in our high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Renault gears up for race weekend with Silverstone GP edition Twingo & Clio RS

Renault gears up for race weekend with Silverstone GP edition Twingo & Clio RS originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Jul 2011 17:32:00 EST.
Walking out to find a boot on your car is about the third worst thing that can happen to your parked vehicle. (One and two would have to be finding out your car was towed or broken into.) Jessica Davey of Southern England walked out to find her Renault Clio wearing the extra metal on one of its wheels and was afraid that the tow company was next to pay her a visit. She decided to stay with the car and fend off any tow trucks... for the next 30 hours.

According to reports, the reason she got the boot in the first place is that her parking permit was not displayed on her windshield. It was, however, sitting in plain sight on the dashboard but not follow the rules to a T is apparently grounds for a bootin' in her neck of the woods.

Davey was worried that the cost to retrieve her car, should it be towed, would be more than the vehicle was actually worth. Her boyfriend tried removing the boot and was quickly arrested, but later released with no charges filed.

The parking enforcement officer, Anthony Brindley, stuck around to make sure the boot stayed put. Brindley said he could remove the boot if Davey paid the £110 ($180 USD) fee. She continued to stick to her guns and the seat of her Clio. Brindley also hung tough, but 30 hours later he moved on. That's when Jessica Davey set to work and removed the boot herself.

In the end, Jessica Davey and her Renault Clio persevered and tasted freedom. Davey did miss a day of work because of the matter, and we're curious how much that cost her.

It typically takes months, if not years after a concept car debuts before an automaker confirms whether it will or will not go into production. But in the case of the Renault Captur, it hasn't even been publicly unveiled yet and reports are already surfacing about its production car future.

According to foreign reports, Renault will build the dynamic crossover as part of the next generation of Clio hatchbacks due next year. Of course, certain elements will be lost in translation from show stand to showroom, but we hope the nifty turn signals integrated into the bodywork make the transition. Those wheels are pretty sweet, too.

We'll get our first glimpse at the Captur concept at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

Nick Hamilton is following in the footsteps of his big brother. You may have heard of him... Lewis Hamilton, the 26-year-old Formula One pilot who has already earned the title of world champion and is continually adding to his career wins count.

Nineteen-year-old Nick has signed a deal with Total Control Racing and will run in the UK Renault Clio Cup. He recently received his National B Race License and has spent time testing with a 2010 Clio Cup car.

Nick will certainly have pressure to peform because of his already-accomplished brother, but he will also be monitored closely because he has cerebral palsy. Hamilton states that he has watched his brother compete and achieve so much early on, which serves as an inspiration for him. He also hopes he can inspire others who face various challenges in their lives.

Renault has gone ahead and answered the prayers of elderly Europeans everywhere by introducing the EU's first OEM front passenger swivel seat. The French automaker recently introduced the option for its Clio hatch as part of a "Mobility for All" campaign, making it a cinch for anyone to get in or out of the car. Folks riding shotgun can simply pull up on a small lever and the seat's base will turn a full 75 degrees to allow easy ingress/egress.

The new option will hit dealers in six countries across Europe, including markets in Spain, Italy, Germany and Renault's motherland, France, starting this year. If you have your heart set on a turning passenger seat, it will set you back a full $2,157 at current exchange rates, though Renault says that's about half of what it would cost to have a similar seat installed by an aftermarket shop. We're in the wrong business.

Old-tyme Autoblog readers will note that this is hardly the first time that swiveling front seats have been offered by an automaker, but it is the first such seat we can think of to be offered in the modern era of crash testing.

Since Renault and Nissan are conjoined twins at the moment, there's some buzz about whether or not the Japanese manufacturer will adopt a similar option for its products. So far, Nissan has kept its secrets to itself, though. Follow the jump to see the seat swivel its little heart out.

Is this a highway or the set of a new Bruce Willis flick? What appears to be a cell phone-wielding cameraman has captured some timely highway footage of a truck driver hauling more than just a few dozen tons of potentially hazardous liquid. We have no idea how a vehicle, apparently a Renault Clio, could possibly find itself in such a precarious and perpendicular position, but we're even more puzzled as to how the truck driver could possibly pass other vehicles in traffic without noticing a 3,000 pound vehicle on its nose.

Assuming this is real and not some sort of staged stunt, we're sure hope the driver of the Clio escaped this unfortunate incident unharmed, because otherwise we would feel really guilty about the fact that we laughed at the fact that the brake lights were flashing on and off. Like that was going to do anything. Check out the video for yourself by hitting the jump. The video footage is admittedly less than great, but we feel the bizarre nature of the subject matter is worth a look.

It's amazing what a little paint and a few stickers can do for a small car. To illustrate that point, take a gander at the special Gordini edition Renault Clio and Twingo in the gallery below. Granted, the improvements reach much deeper than just those stickers, but the matte blue paint, white accents and white decals give these little runabouts a purposeful look and signal to the world that they are the top-of-the-performance-heap Gordini editions.

For those who need a refresher, Gordini is the name of a legendary Renault racing engineer. Amédée Gordini brought Renault some rally racing glory in the mid-'60s with the iconic R8 Gordini. Renault recently revived the name, reestablishing it as the top rung trim level on its already racy Renault Sport (R.S.) editions. Mechanically similar to their R.S. counterparts, they are mainly distinguished by retro styling touches (like the classic French racing blue paint scheme with white stripes) and an extra dose of exclusivity. Plus, they just look badass.

The first product in the new range, the Twingo Gordini R.S. had already debuted last November, but here at the Geneva Motor Show, the company unveiled their Gordini edition Clio as well. We have galleries of both cars for you below, the Mini-sized Twingo and the slightly larger Clio. Both cars have the performance upgrades found on R.S. models, with larger wheels, Brembo brakes, Conti SportContact3 tires, diffusers, heat extractors and that great livery. Check out the little "G" confetti in the stripes - classic.

Renault Clio 20th Anniversary Edition - Click above for high-res image gallery

Renault has certainly been keeping busy. In addition to restructuring its F1 team to come back with a fresh design for 2010, the French automaker has recently unveiled an innovative new Megane coupe-convertible, the equally interesting Wind roadster and a slew of new panel vans. All the while, Renault is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its bread-and-butter model, the Clio.

Over the years, Renault has sold a staggering 10 million units of the Clio, putting it on par with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Toyota Camry as the 20th top-selling car of all time, but in a shorter timeframe. To kick off the festivities, Renault has released special edition versions of the Clio hatchback (both three- and five-door configurations), Clio wagon and Clio RS hot hatch.

All the 20th anniversary Clios get a mouthful of black trim and, of course, the requisite special badging. The hatch and wagon can be ordered in a variety of color combinations, while the RS special comes exclusively in two-tone white and black, complimented by 17-inch BeBop wheels. Equipment levels depend on the market, with orders already taken in France ahead of other European markets starting next month. Pricing starts at €14,350 (just shy of twenty grand in Benjamins), with the Clio RS 20th commanding €24,700 (about $34k USD). Full details can be found in the press release after the jump, with high-resolution images in the gallery below.

Gallery: Renault Clio 20th Anniversary Edition

[Source: Renault]
Continue reading 10 Million Served: Renault celebrates Clio's 20th with special editions

10 Million Served: Renault celebrates Clio's 20th with special editions originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Feb 2010 13:00:00 EST. Renault Clio S - Click above for high-res image gallery

Every so often, Renault impresses and teases us with the launch of a new hot hatch. Impresses because they're widely rated as some of the most dynamically competent micro-machines on the road today. Teases because, well...they don't offer them in North America. So all we can do is admire from abroad such offerings as the Twingo 133 Cup, Clio 200 and Megane R26.R, to name just a few.

The range is set to expand both upwards (with the likes of the new Gordini line-up) and downwards (with the adoption of the GT range), but every once in a while, Renault fakes us out with something that when it comes down to it, really only looks the part. The World Series editions were one recent example, and now the French automaker has launched the Clio S for the British market.

Sure, the Clio S looks the part. It's got 16-inch wheels, a spoiler on the trailing edge of its roof, a front lip spoiler below the grille and racing stripes galore, all done up in contrasting white. But the Clio S lacks the go to back up the show. Engines are limited to 75- and 100-horsepower fours and an 86-hp diesel. Not exactly Renaultsport figures, but then neither are their prices, ranging from £11,209 to £13,458 all-in (that's around $18k-22k USD, not accounting for the UK market's inflated pricing). So for the moment, we can rest easy this time around, neither impressed nor enticed. Details in the release after the jump and photos in the gallery below.

World Series by Renault Clio and Megane - Click above for high-res image gallery

With nearly every automaker launching special editions by the boatload, it's hard to point a finger and claim one is really bilking it more than the others. Especially not at Renault, which typically applies the special badge treatment to limited editions of its rippin' Renaultsport hot hatches. So you'd figure that if the French automaker were to launch a special line to honor its own one-marque formula racing series, it'd bring the goods, right? Unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case with the World Series special edition Clio and Megane.

Not to be confused with baseball's championship, the World Series by Renault is a racing class started over a decade ago by sister company Nissan and functions as a stepping stone for aspiring racers with an eye toward F1. Current grand prix drivers Fernando Alonso, Heikki Kovalainen and Robert Kubica have all won the championship in their formative years. But while the World Series by Renault runs identical Dallara chassis with 3.5-liter 425hp Renault V6 engines, the lackluster WSR edition Clios and Meganes run engines producing between 75 and 110 hp. With a handful of minor cosmetic tweaks like spoilers and alloy wheels, the WSR specials amount to little more than an options package adding £1650 (~$2700) of equipment to otherwise ordinary cars for a £500 (~$800) premium. Not a bad deal, but not quite what we've come to expect from Renault.

Gallery: Renault Clio and Megane World Series editions

[Source: Renault]
World Series edition Renault Clio and Megane aren't exactly home runs originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 27 Jun 2009 12:25:00 EST.
200. That's a mighty big number for such a tiny car, but it's the horsepower figure that Renaultsport's latest hot hatch packs beneath its bonnet. And while it may be only three measley horses more than the 197 version on which it's based and replaces, Renault's performance and motorsport division has worked to improve the aerodynamics and cut weight to make each one count more.

Complimenting the mid-cycle revised styling of the entire Clio range, the Clio RS 200 and 200 Cup benefit from Renault's Formula One program, with which the French automaker attributes the aerodynamic expertise implemented on its latest hot hatch. Air passes over the front splitter to feed the the revised 200-hp, 2.0-liter 16-valve four-cylinder engine, but it also goes underneath to the flat rear bottom and exits the fully functional rear diffuser. The design also pushes air around the wider front fenders, past the side vents and around the widened track to give the new Clio RS its performance edge. The aerodynamic enhancements gives the car an even meaner look, while customers can choose from a wider variety of look-at-me colors, contrasting with either black or anthracite-finish trim.

Inside it's all business: the compact steering wheel has perforated leather trim with a yellow strip to show when it's centered, and Recaro racing buckets are available along with leather upholstery. Unfortunately the car isn't available Stateside, but across the pond the new Clio Renaultsport 200 starts selling next month at £16,570, while hardcore enthusiasts can save a bit and get the even more focused, stripped-down Cup version for £15,750. Follow the jump for all the details in the press release, and check out the images in the gallery below.

Gallery: Renault Clio RS 200

[Source: Renault]
Continue reading Renault unveils updated Clio Renaultsport 200 hot hatch

Renault unveils updated Clio Renaultsport 200 hot hatch originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 May 2009 09:30:00 EST.
Click above for what could be renderings of the 2011 Renault Clio

Is this the next Renault Clio? A spy shot forum has posted grainy black-and-white renderings of what could be the basis of the 2011 hatchback. While the protruding nostrils raise eyebrows, from the front and rear 3/4-view the car has an engaging line, the Mazda-like upswept creases moving nicely from stem to stern, wavelike. From the side, however, it looks a little stretched out, less like a wave, more like taffy. We'll have to wait and see if these shots have anything to do with the actual Clio, but regardless, there are some interesting elements we wouldn't mind on the real car. You can check out the rest of the renderings and weigh in below.

Gallery: Rendered Speculation - 2011 Renault Clio

[Source: Car Spy Shots]
Rendered Speculation: Is this the 2011 Renault Clio? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 26 Apr 2009 13:39:00 EST.
