The annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is one of the few events in motorsport with an Unlimited Class that is truly... well, unlimited. To put the word 'unlimited' in perspective, consider the Red Bull-sponsored Peugeot 208 T16: its 3.2-liter bi-turbo V6 engine puts out 875 maximum horsepower, sending power to all four wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox. That's powerful enough to catapult the T16 from 0-62 miles per hour in a scant 1.8 seconds. Keep it planted and it'll hit 125 in 4.8 seconds and 150 in 7.0 flat.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is freakishly fast.

Just ask Sébastien Loeb, a man who's no stranger to high-performance machinery, having won nine World Rally championships, who said of the T16 after his first testing session: "I've never driven anything that accelerates so fast! ... It's got the downforce of a Formula 1 car, the wide tires of an endurance racing prototype and a differential like a WRC car."

And that right there is the automotive definition of 'Unlimited.' Oh, did we mention that the T16 is one of the meanest looking four-wheeled vehicles we've ever laid eyes on? See for yourself in the high-res image galleries, press release and video below.
Continue reading Watch Sebastien Loeb take first drive in Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak racer

Watch Sebastien Loeb take first drive in Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak racer originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 May 2013 19:58:00 EST.
For the first time ever, the Crown Range, New Zealand's highest paved road, was closed off for the drifting pleasure of one man. That man is Mad Mike Whiddett, and the machine he's piloting is a heavily modified Mazda RX-7 sponsored by the energy-rich crew from Red Bull and powered by a 750-horsepower quad-rotor engine. There will be smoke. Lots and lots of smoke.

Mad Mike hits speeds in excess of 140 miles per hour over the course of the road's six and a half miles, which boasts 47 individual corners at over 3,500 feet of elevation. Scroll down for all kinds of fire-belching, tire-squealing and smoke-inducing action. Or, as Mad Mike himself puts it, "A dream turned into reality."
Continue reading Red Bull RX-7 goes drift crazy on New Zealand's Crown Range

Red Bull RX-7 goes drift crazy on New Zealand's Crown Range originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 May 2013 18:29:00 EST.
The sand, the wind, the penalties, the contact and the one crash - all of them collided to make the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix a surprise affair from day to day and lap to lap. Oh, and did we mention the tires? Pirelli made a last-minute swap after the amusement park ride that the Chinese Grand Prix turned into with the soft compound tire, and brought medium and hard compounds to the desert. That didn't stop things from falling apart for some teams - literally - and that didn't stop the one team that seems to love the hard compound Pirelli tire.
Continue reading Race Recap: 2013 Bahrain Grand Prix follows the template of this year and last [spoilers]

Race Recap: 2013 Bahrain Grand Prix follows the template of this year and last [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Apr 2013 17:00:00 EST.
So says he. While speaking with reporters, Sebastian Vettel said he would probably disobey team orders again if those orders included instructions not to challenge his teammate Mark Webber. As you may recollect, Vettel found himself in hot water after he passed Webber at the Malaysian Grand Prix to take the win. Vettel later apologized for his actions, saying, "I messed up." Apparently being sorry only goes so far. When asked if he would do the same again, Vettel said that he probably would and that his actions at the Malaysian GP were a form of indirect payback for a lack of support at past races.

Webber caught flack last season after appearing to obstruct Vettel twice at the Brazilian GP as the German driver fought for a team win against Fernando Alonso.

Moving forward, Red Bull has said it will not implement team orders at the end of a race, and Vettel has not been punished by the team for taking the win. The driver said that he failed to understand the order given during the race over the radio and that he immediately apologized to everyone involved. He also said he would have yielded the position if he had been ordered to do so.
Vettel reserves the right to continue disobeying team orders originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 14 Apr 2013 09:00:00 EST.
It's been said that Red Bull is a marketing company that happens to sell energy drinks, and it's an argument that is not without merit. After all, nearly every form of motorsport (in addition to non-engine-powered sports) has some sort of sponsorship deal with the Austrian drink maker, and nowhere is that more recognizable than in Formula One.

Underlining that point is the video below. In it, you'll see how, in just five years' worth of time, Red Bull Racing has gone from an unknown quantity to the undisputed team to beat at the pinnacle of motorsport. Sure, RBR can't boast nearly as much history and tradition as teams like Ferrari, McLaren and Lotus, but it sure is hard to argue with its results.

The chief of Infiniti's Formula One motorsport involvement, Andreas Sigl, said just last week that the brand was "going longer and deeper" into its collaboration with Red Bull, and the proof has already come: the Japanese luxury brand has signed a four-year deal to become the title sponsor of Red Bull Racing. From next year the team will be Infiniti Red Bull Racing.

The move cements Infiniti's intention to make the most of the already-ongoing technical collaboration it has had with Red Bull Racing for two years - this year Milton Keynes team has been testing Infiniti's Scratch Heal paint for aero properties and during the young driver test it used KERS batteries that were wholly developed by Infiniti's parent company, Nissan.

Earning a tip of the hat for not giving into cheap-trick branding, the engines will continue to be branded as Renault. Renault/Nissan CEO does not "want any confusion within the Alliance as to who does what."
Infiniti signs four-year deal to become title sponsor of Red Bull Racing originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Nov 2012 09:28:00 EST. The track between the lakes, the Circuit d'Interlagos in Sao Paulo, Brazil, yet again served up a fitting finale to the Formula One season. There were all kinds of ways for the two Driver's Championship contenders - Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull and Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari - to win and lose during the 71 laps of the Brazilian Grand Prix, and that was before the rain, before the yellow flags and safety car periods, and before the accidents.

The World Championship lead swapped hands at least three times during the race. By the end of Lap One, in fact, it was a fair question if either driver would have hands, or a car, steady enough to hold it...
Continue reading 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix: The circle is complete, and what a circle it's been [spoilers]

2012 Brazilian Grand Prix: The circle is complete, and what a circle it's been [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Nov 2012 13:45:00 EST. The Texas grass no longer rustles with 2.4-liter V8 exhaust blown at 18,000 revs, the Texas dust is no longer raised by hard-compound Pirellis. There were 56 laps run in Austin's Travis County prairie to complete the inaugural United States Grand Prix at the newly minted Circuit of the Americas. Coming into the race, there were nothing but questions and calculations: Would the track be any good for Formula One? Could Red Bull Racing get the five points it needed to take the F1 Constructor's Championship? Would Turn One be the Golgotha everyone predicted? Would the race be the triumphal return to America that everyone was afraid to predict? Could Sauber get enough points to overhaul a struggling Mercedes-AMG Petronas team for fifth in the Constructor's Championship? Could Marussia manage a twelfth-placed finish to overhaul Caterham? Could official track ambassador Mario Andretti conduct a post-race interview?

And most importantly, could Sebastian Vettel put an end to the issue of the Driver's Championship? He would put up a Texas-sized fight...
Continue reading 2012 US Grand Prix, remember the <s>Alamo</s> Circuit of the Americas [spoilers]

2012 US Grand Prix, remember the <s>Alamo</s> Circuit of the Americas [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Nov 2012 10:00:00 EST.
The Circuit of the Americas is the miracle in the fields, the track that no one thought would be finished in time to hold its appointed race. But the Texans got past the turmoil, and even though the heavy machinery was still working on dirt roads as July, come November 18 there was a beautiful, and completed, Formula 1 facility for Travis County to call its own. It was dusty, sure. But it was done, and F1 could come to town.

Infiniti, sponsors of Red Bull Racing, invited Autoblog to watch the first grand prix in America since 2007, and the first GP on a dedicated F1 course since the Phoenix street circuit in 1991. Here's a little recap of what we saw and fount out on day one.
Continue reading Grand Prix of the Americas, Day 1 Recap: a city arose in the fields, and it was good

Grand Prix of the Americas, Day 1 Recap: a city arose in the fields, and it was good originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 17 Nov 2012 10:14:00 EST. In the US, Formula One racing lost the popularity contest to NASCAR a long time ago. But after five years, F1 returns to the States with this weekend's race at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Red Bull, sponsor of F1 driver Sebastian Vettel, has put together an interesting set of numbers illustrating the differences between the two racing series.

To start with, Formula One has just 24 drivers, while NASCAR fields 50 entrants. Stock cars can reach speeds of about 200 miles per hour, just a bit slower than F1's 205. But NASCAR drivers experience only about 2Gs of lateral force during, at most courses, only four left-hand turns. F1 drivers endure 5Gs in multiple left-and right-hand turns.

The Daytona 500, NASCAR's best-attended venue, counted 182,000 fans this year. Formula One's biggest attendance is at the Australian Grand Prix where 298,000 fans came out to watch. Those fans helped finance F1's best-paid driver, Fernando Alonso. He makes $37 million a year. NASCAR's Dale Earnhardt Jr. pulls in $28 million. That's an average of $1.85 million per race for Alonso, who only competes in 20 events. Earnhardt Jr., however, has 36 races to drive in and averages about $778,000 a race.

The infographic is fun, if a bit skewed against NASCAR, especially when considering Red Bull was a NASCAR driver sponsor until the end of the 2011 season. Sour grapes perhaps?

Red Bull is one of those companies with its fingers in every corner of the sports world. It's easy to forget just how far those sponsorship dollars have spread since the brand's early days, but a clever new video showcasing some of the brightest stars of the Red Bull family is out to remind us there's nowhere the energy drink manufacturer won't advertise.

In what could very well be the world's oddest Rube Goldberg machine - Red Bull calls it a Kluge, which means a jury-rigged device or offbeat workaround - pro skaters Joey Brezinski and Ryan Sheckler, hurdler Lolo Jones, sky diver Sean MacCormac and motocross rider Robbie Maddison team up with one truck racer Bryce Menzies and Rhys Millen in his Hyundai Genesis Coupe drift car to free a can of Red Bull from a block of ice.

Excessive? Sure, but remember, this is the same company that put a man at the edge of space just so he could jump back down again. Other Red Bull-branded athletes make an appearance as well, including pro golfer Rickie Fowler and snowboarder Pat Moore. Check out the whole cast in the clip below.
Continue reading Red Bull Rube Goldberg machine uses Ram trophy truck, Hyundai Genesis

Red Bull Rube Goldberg machine uses Ram trophy truck, Hyundai Genesis originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Nov 2012 19:58:00 EST.
Call it an unfortunate side effect of growing up in the information age, but it takes some truly impressive technology to surprise us anymore. So when we say the ViewCam 360 has set our cynical hearts aglow, we want you to understand the full scope of our meaning.

The tech captures complete 360-degree footage around a center point, which can then be played back and viewed through a unique flash player. Users can control the camera angle to look left, right, up or down while the video is streaming. Think of it as as a supercharged version of Google Street View.

Making View AS, the company behind the tech, recently partnered with the Red Bull Formula One team to show off exactly what's possible. The ViewCam 360 captured the Red Bull racer as it sprinted around the Rudskogen facility in Norway. The video below allows us all to tag along for the ride and take in the full sights and sounds from every angle. Check it out for yourself and be sure to head over to the ViewCam 360 site for more information.
Continue reading You need to watch this ViewCam 360 vid of a Red Bull F1 car

You need to watch this ViewCam 360 vid of a Red Bull F1 car originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Nov 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Infiniti has served up a rash of photos of its limited-run FX Vettel Edition. The $155,000 hyper crossover offers buyers a full 414 horsepower and a 5.6-second run to 60 mph. The grunt is also good enough to scoot the hunkered-down CUV to a top speed of 186 mph. As we've heard, Sebastian Vettel lent a hand in setting up the vehicle's suspension, and the Formula One racer's Red Bull team helped pen the carbon fiber body kit. Those bits include a new front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser and rear wing.

If you want one - and happen to have more cash than sense - you better get on the horn with your local Infiniti dealer - provided you keep a residence in one of the car's markets. The manufacturer is only planning to build 150 examples, with 50 examples earmarked for the Middle East, Russia and Western Europe, respectively... if you want one in North America, you're going to have to get a bit creative.

For all those who love a parade - and that's supposedly everyone - the second-ever running of the Indian Grand Prix was a magnificent affair. The 2012 Formula One Championship has already been one that won't soon be forgotten, and even at the pointy end of the season, the standings are being upended and the competition still has some bite. The races themselves, on the other hand, are turning into replays of that movie we've all seen and that comes on cable every few weeks, but we watch it because we love it even though we know how it ends.

Since they say it's not the destination, it's the journey that matters, join us below while we examine what happened when red, scarlet, silver and black did battle at the Buddh International Circuit.
Continue reading 2012 Indian Grand Prix: On a hazy day in Delhi, one man makes things very, very clear [spoilers]

2012 Indian Grand Prix: On a hazy day in Delhi, one man makes things very, very clear [spoilers] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Oct 2012 18:31:00 EST.
If you've never heard of he Romaniacs Hard Enduro Rallye, crack open your ears for a spell. The race is a grueling four-day event that slithers through the Carpathian mountains of Romania.

We aren't talking about battling some logging road, either. The competitors who tackle Romaniacs bolt up ridge sides, climb waterfalls and tear across open terrain in an attempt to set the best recorded time. A single stage can put the riders through 30,000 feet of climbing over incredibly varied terrain. This is a competition where no single skill set will nab you the title. Rather, riders need to be well-rounded to take all 400 miles head on.

This year, Red Bull worked up a Signature Series on the event, following competitors through all four stages and documenting the carnage in beautiful HD. The 45-minute-long video is entirely TV quality, and while it requires a serious time commitment, it's also completely worth a slice of your day. You can check it out for yourself below - just don't blame us if you find yourself wanting an enduro machine of your own once you finish.
Continue reading Red Bull Romaniacs Hard Enduro Rallye 2012 is a basket of insanity

Red Bull Romaniacs Hard Enduro Rallye 2012 is a basket of insanity originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Oct 2012 20:00:00 EST.
Red Bull, patron of all things slightly mental, has organized a gathering of moped enthusiasts in Switzerland for the past three years. The attendees don't just sit around and gawk at each other's machines, though. The Red Bull Alpenbrevet is an 82-mile rally, and the course forces participants to use their mix of human and internal combustion power to tackle a total of three 7,000-foot passes. This year, 770 riders came out to compete for the gold. There was more than one way to go home a winner, however. The Alpenbrevet also features a "style" competition, and many riders gussy up both their classic mopeds and themselves for the day.

You can check out some footage from this year's event below or head over to the Alpenbrevet site for more information.
The grandson of the co-creator of Red Bull has been arrested in Bangkok, Thailand and is accused of killing a policeman with his Ferrari. Vorajuth Yoovidhaya is the 27-year-old grandson of the late Chaleo Yoovidhaya, who created Red Bull. According to the BBC, Vorayuth has been accused of running over a 47-year-old policeman with a new Ferrari FF and dragging him down the road before the officer succumbed to a broken neck and multiple broken bones.

The crime was alleged to have been initially covered-up by a low-ranking police superintendent. The superintendent reportedly tried to detain an innocent man for the crime before the Bangkok police chief, Comronwit Toopgranjank, discovered what was happening. That man has since been released and the low-level officer has now been transferred to another post.

Toopgranjank, who personally escorted the Red Bull heir from his Bangkok home was quoted as saying, "A policeman is dead. I can't let this stand. I don't car how powerful they are. If I can't get the actual man in this case, I will resign."

Yoovidhaya is set to be charged with "causing death by driving" and leaving the scene of a crime. He faces up to ten years in jail.
Ferrari-driving Red Bull heir held after allegedly dragging police officer to death originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 10:18:00 EST.
Formula One may not be descending on New Jersey next year for the Grand Prix of America, but the news hasn't stopped Red Bull from doing a little early scouting. David Coulthard dusted off the RB7 racer for a few quick sprints through the streets of New Jersey and West New York on the proposed course. As if watching the F1 bruiser dart down the waterfront and through car-lined city streets isn't enough to get us seriously stoked about the race, Red Bull also turned its team loose on the Lincoln tunnel.

Listening to the high-strung racer clear its lungs in the tunnel is nothing short of fantastic. You'll want to turn up the volume for this one. Red Bull said the stunt drew onlookers out of their homes just to see and hear the RB7 scream by their doorsteps. We can certainly understand why.

As you may recall, F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone has said that the event is definitely not going to happen in 2013 and may get pushed back to 2014.
Continue reading Watch Red Bull take a tour of New Jersey in an F1 car

Watch Red Bull take a tour of New Jersey in an F1 car originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 30 Aug 2012 09:13:00 EST.
Red Bull is becoming the Marlboro of motorsport; it hasn't been since the cigarette makers were banished from public promotion that we expect to see such familiar colors in just about any series. Earlier this year, CSI, the parent company of former World Rally Championship promoter North One Sports, went into administration, which led to the FIA terminating its contract with North One.

Three finalists emerged in the effort to become the new promoter: a South African entity, Eurosport (which promotes the Intercontinental Rally Challenge), and Red Bull Media House. According to reports, the FIA is set to announce Red Bull Media House as the next promoter perhaps as soon as the Rallye Deutschland at the end of the month. A separate division of Red Bull sponsors the Citroën WRC team that has won the manufacturer's title seven of the last nine years.

WRC has had a tough time of it even before losing North One; the loss of its promoter only made everything worse. Should Red Bull and its massive and massively successful marketing machine be appointed to captain the ship, all parties will likely feel better, at least in the short term. And knowing how Red Bull doesn't like to miss out on promoting its properties across every platform, perhaps that means we fans will get much better access to WRC coverage.
Red Bull set to be announced as the new promoter of the World Rally Championship originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Aug 2012 09:14:00 EST.
