Toyota has announced that it will be issuing a substantial recall of the FJ Cruiser for a problem that could cause the front seatbelt retractors to separate from the vehicle body. This recall will apply to all FJ Cruisers - from 2007 through 2013 - totaling around 209,000 units.

The problem stems from the FJ Cruiser's pillarless door opening design that has the front-occupant seatbelts attached to the rear doors. Toyota says that when the rear doors are "repeatedly and forcefully closed," the retractor could completely separate from the door frame.

While there is no information about this recall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration yet, Toyota says that there have been no accidents or injuries associated with this issue. No specific fix or recall date are given, but the official press release is posted below.
Continue reading Toyota recalls 209,000 FJ Cruisers over seatbelt issue

Toyota recalls 209,000 FJ Cruisers over seatbelt issue originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 16 Mar 2013 10:58:00 EST.
A recall has been issued for nearly 183,000 Honda and Acura brand vehicles from the 2005 and 2006 model years. The problem stems from a potential malfunctions to the vehicles' stability control and braking systems.

Drivers have reported a malfunction to Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist system, though to date, no crashes or injuries have been reported as a result of it. Some of the vehicles' Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) control units may have an electric capacitor that was damaged during manufacture. A damaged control unit could cause the VSA system to apply brake force for a "fraction of a second" without any driver input, or could add additional brake force if it malfunctions while the driver is already braking. Either example could increase the risk of a crash.

To fix the issue, Honda will install a new electrical sub-harness, free of charge to the owner. The recall specifies 101,000 Honda Pilot (pictured), 60,000 Acura MDX and 21,000 Acura RL vehicles from the 2005 model year will be affected. An additional 800 MDX crossovers from the 2006 model year are also included in the recall. In addition, 51,000 of the affected 2005 Pilots will be inspected to be sure that a ground bolt for the VSA system is properly tight. Should this bolt come lose, similar unexpected brake activation may occur.

The Detroit News is reporting that the same recall will affect nearly 250,000 Hondas from model years 2004 through 2006 worldwide: 56,000 in Japan, 8,000 in Canada, 1,000 in Australia, 300 in Mexico and 70 in Germany.
Continue reading Honda recalling 183k cars and crossovers over unintended braking issue

Honda recalling 183k cars and crossovers over unintended braking issue originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Mar 2013 13:28:00 EST.
Subaru has issued one of the strangest recalls we've come across in some time. As it turns out, certain Subaru models may randomly start their own engines. The issue is confined to select models equipped with an automatic or CVT and the company's optional Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory. If the RES key fob is dropped, it could "randomly transmit an engine start request without pressing the button."

Vehicles affected include the 2010-2012 Legacy and Outback with an automatic or CVT, 2012-2013 Impreza with the CVT, and 2013 XV Crosstrek with CVT (shown), all equipped with the Audiovox RES accessory. Likewise, certain 2013 Legacy and Outbacks may have received replacement RES fobs that could be affected. All told, 47,419 vehicles are included in the recall.

Should one of these cars start on their own, Subaru says they will run up to 15 minutes, but the vehicle may also continue to start and stop until either the battery in the fob dies or the car runs out of fuel. Of course, if one of these cars is parked in an enclosed area, that means harmful gasses could build up, which could be dangerous if inhaled.

The fix is an obvious one: Subaru will replace the RES fobs for free. Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to be notified by the end of April, though their car might let them know sooner.
Continue reading Subaru issues recall over cars that may start themselves

Subaru issues recall over cars that may start themselves originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 15:44:00 EST.
The recall bug strikes Toyota again. The automaker has issued a voluntary recall of three models that, in total, represent more than one million units. Around 752,000 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla and Matrix models are being recalled for airbag concerns, while a windshield wiper issue is causing the recall for close to 270,000 Lexus IS sedans from the 2006-2012 model years.

Completely unrelated to the small airbag-related recall issued earlier in the week, the Corolla and Matrix recall is caused by a faulty airbag control module that could potentially short circuit, which could lead to the front airbags or seat belt pretensioners deploying. The Lexus recall is due to a wiper arm nut that wasn't tightened properly, which can cause the wipers to not work when trying to clear heavy buildup such as snow.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall notice for a small number of General Motors fullsize vans due to possible rollaway concerns. On certain 2013 Chevrolet Express and 2013 GMC Savana models, it is possible to remove the key from the ignition without the shifter being in park.

Only 980 total units are being affected by this recall, and GM is fixing the issue by replacing the ignition cylinder and associated keys. Affected Chevy vans were built during most of November and December while its GMC counterpart was only built for a week in November. The recall goes into effect on January 23, and to find out if your vehicle applies to the recall, the GM and NHTSA contact numbers can be found on the official recall notice, which is posted below.
Continue reading GM recalls Chevy Express, GMC Savana over rollaway concern

GM recalls Chevy Express, GMC Savana over rollaway concern originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 21 Jan 2013 08:00:00 EST.
Toyota dominated new car sales last year, with its Camry topping out at just over 400,000 units, but the automaker also led a much less desirable category in 2012: recalls. According to The Detroit News, Toyota's 5.3 million recalled units was enough to give it the highest recall volume last year in the US, giving the brand this unfortunate distinction for the third time in the last four years. Overall, 16.2 million vehicles (including RVs and motorcycles) were recalled last year with the oversight of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration marking an increase of 4.5 percent over 2011. By volume, Toyota, Honda and the Detroit Three accounted for the vast majority of all recalls tallied last year with a combined total of almost 13 million recalled vehicles.

Looking at the total number of vehicles that were recalled, Toyota and Honda each had more than double of any other automaker, but when it came to the total number of individual recall campaigns, Ford had the most with 24 separate recalls issued. The report offers an interesting breakdown of different recall data from last year including a graphic that puts it all into perspective, so be sure to head on over to The Detroit News for the full report.
Toyota tops 2012 recalls in volume, Ford in number of campaigns originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Jan 2013 13:30:00 EST.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a massive recall campaign today for some of the more popular Subaru models due to defective puddle lights that could short out and possibly lead to smoke and/or fire.

(*)While the recall notice lists a total of 633,842 Forester, Legacy, Outback and Tribeca models from various model years, Automotive News is reporting that there are only 53,999 units actually equipped with the defective lights, but Subaru is having to make the massive recall since it is unable identify which vehicles have the lights.

The problem with the 2009 through 2012 Forester, 2006 through 2012 Tribeca and the 2010 through 2011 Legacy and Outback is that the puddle lights mounted under the door mirrors can collect water or moisture, which can lead to the short. To fix the problem, Subaru is adding an extra fuse to the wiring harness as a part of the recall that will go into effect next month. For Forester owners, this is the second major recall in less than a year following the 275,000 units that were afflicted with faulty rear seatbelts.

It turns out Ford isn't the only automaker worried about car fire recalls these days. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today issuing a recall for potential fires on various 2011 and 2012 model year Mercedes-Benz vehicles, occurring from a fault with a fuel filter flange. The problem stems from an issue in the molding process that can allow the flange to crack, leak gasoline and possibly cause a fire.

Only a small number (5,800) of vehicles are affected by the recall, but it includes a total of eight different models (C300, CL550, CL63 AMG, E350, GLK350, S400 Hybrid, S550 and S63 AMG) across five vehicle lines (C-Class, CL-Class, E-Class, GLK-Class and S-Class). To fix the potentially hazardous problem, dealers will replace the fuel filter as a part of the recall, which goes into effect next month.

Volkswagen is recalling 2,471 Beetle models over faulty occupant control modules in the front passenger seat. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, if the seat in certain 2012 and 2013 model year vehicles gets wet, the module may malfunction and may not detect the presence of a child restraint. If that happens, the airbag will not shut off and will deploy in the event of a collision. Such a scenario could greatly increase the risk of serious child injury.

As a remedy, Volkswagen technicians will replace the control modules free of charge. The automaker hasn't released a schedule of when the recall will begin, but owners can expect to be notified of the campaign soon. You can view the official NHTSA recall notice below for more information.

Earlier this year, Volkswagen recalled 83 2012 Beetle models for being equipped with the wrong tires.
Continue reading VW recalls 2012-2013 Beetle models with leather seats over airbags

VW recalls 2012-2013 Beetle models with leather seats over airbags originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 18:29:00 EST. The Chinese government has released new regulations for vehicle recalls. According to Automotive News China, starting next year, automakers who fail to recall vehicles in a timely manner can expect to face fines between $80,000 and $160,000. That may be a small sum for an automaker, but the new regulations also allow the government to levy a fine of between one- to ten-percent of the total sales value of the recalled units.

What's more, automakers could face revocation of their production licenses if they knowingly conceal defects or refuse to stop selling faulty vehicles. Currently, automakers in China operate under guidelines enacted some six years ago. The outgoing standards only impose a tiny fine of between $1,600 and $4,800 for failing to recall vehicles. Between 2004 and 2011, manufacturers in the country recalled some 6.2 million units.
Chinese government getting serious about vehicle recalls originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Nov 2012 10:59:00 EST.
Can anything slow Toyota down? Only a couple of years ago, the Japanese giant seemed as vulnerable as a sumo wrestler with vertigo as it struggled to explain away a series of safety and quality snafus that forced it to recall an unprecedented 14 million vehicles worldwide. Then, just it was getting back on its feet, the maker was body-slammed by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that all but shut down the Japanese auto industry, leaving the industry giant struggling under severe inventory shortages for the rest of the year.

Only a couple of years ago, the Japanese giant seemed as vulnerable as a sumo wrestler with vertigo.

Yet, just like that sumo wrestler, Toyota has repeatedly shaken off the hardest hits. Despite somewhat mixed reviews, its Camry has continued to dominate the midsize passenger car segment - helping Toyota drive sales gains that have, in recent months, run triple the pace of the overall US automotive recovery.

In fact, Toyota's loyalty rate is once again setting the industry benchmark, according to a new study by Experian Automotive, something that suggests the recent sales surge is more than just pent-up demand as buyers catch up after the shortages of 2011.

So, what to make of the unexpected move by Standard & Poors, the influential financial ratings agency, which this month downgraded the maker's stock from a "Hold" to "Buy" rating? Now, to be sure, this was no panic move. S&P didn't tell investors to dump Toyota and race somewhere else with their money. No one is expecting the sort of financial collapse that accompanied the descent into bankruptcy at General Motors and Chrysler during the latter half of the past decade. But for those who thought Toyota was, indeed invulnerable, the downgrade may be hard to reconcile.

Toyota has announced a voluntary of around 2.5 million vehicles in the US for faulty window switches. The automaker says the driver's side power window master switch may develop a sticky or notchy feel during operation, and that if owners or technicians apply commercial lubricant, the switch my smoke or catch fire.

The recall covers certain Yaris, RAV4, Tundra, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Sequoia, Corolla and Matrix models as well as Scion xD and xA units. All vehicles fall between the model years 2007 and 2009. Over 200 incidents involving the switches have been reported in the US alone, though the trouble hasn't caused any accidents or injuries.

Toyota technicians will inspect, disassemble and apply special flourine grease to the switches free of charge. Owners can expect to receive a recall notice starting later this month. The 2.5M unit total only covers US vehicles - some 7.4M units will fall under this recall globally.
Last week, Daimler announced that it would be sticking with R-134a refrigerant in its cars due to some tests it conducted that showed the newer, more environmentally friendly R-1234yf ignited in certain crash tests. Apparently, this R-134a replacement had already been installed in the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, so the automaker is electing to issue a recall for a small number of SLs to replace the refrigerant. While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the recall, this worst-case scenario crash was only verified by Daimler, and the refrigerant recall is not yet affecting any other automakers.

Since the two refrigerants are interchangeable, all Mercedes-Benz dealerships will have to do is replace the R-1234yf with R-134a and swap out the A/C lines. Mercedes-Benz will be notifying owners this month whose cars were built between December 19, 2011 and May 31, 2012; NHTSA states that only 432 cars will be affected.

Currently, General Motors is the only other automaker in the U.S. using the R-1234yf (in the 2013 Cadillac XTS and 2013 Cadillac ATS in addition to the European-spec Chevrolet Malibu), and it has responded with a statement of its own regarding this matter:

"The safety of our vehicles and our customers is GM's highest priority. The new vehicle refrigerant, called R-1234yf, was evaluated and tested over many years through industry-wide cooperative research programs with organizations such as SAE and other independent engineering organizations and involved 10 major global automobile manufacturers including GM. We believe these tests demonstrate that R-1234yf is a safe, effective and environmentally beneficial motor vehicle air conditioner refrigerant for our future vehicles. However, we are trying to learn more about the Daimler test experience and will, of course, make any decisions and take any actions with our customers' safety in mind."

We're sure this isn't the last we've heard on this topic, so stay tuned.
Chrysler is issuing a recall for the 2009 and 2010 Ram 1500 and Dodge Dakota pickup trucks due to improper installation of the rear axle pinion nut. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a total of 44,300 trucks are affected by the recall, and there have been 12 confirmed incidents including one crash.

The issue on both trucks is that the pinion nut is loosening on some trucks due to a lack of thread adhesive, and it is causing the rear axle to lock up resulting in loss of vehicle control. NHTSA's recall notice says that eight incidents occurred at speeds over 35 miles per hour and most also exhibited driveshaft failures as well since the loss of the pinion nut would cause the gear to separate from the driveshaft. In one complaint, the driveshaft separated from the rear axle and punctured the gas tank.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation following complaints from drivers that the sunroofs on the Hyundai Veloster are prone to spontaneously exploding.

There are 15 complaints in the NHTSA database from drivers who say they heard a loud bang, and then sat through a downpour of glass.

One woman said she was driving home from getting her first oil change and tire rotation on the Veloster.

"All of the sudden there was a loud bang like a gunshot, and I heard something raining down on my car," reads the complaint, which is listed without any identifying information in the NHTSA database. "I looked in the mirror and saw glass flying everywhere... The glass was in my hair, down the back of my shirt and my pants."

All of the incidents happened on very new models, with less than 3,000 miles on the odometer. Two people said the roof exploded while the car was parked. One person was hosing the car down in the driveway when the glass shattered. This person said the glass flew as far as six feet away from the car.

Jim Trainor, a spokesman for Hyundai, said the company is working with NHTSA to look into the problem.

"Our evaluation is in the very early stages and Hyundai is in the process of examining each report," Trainor said. "As always, we will work closely with NHTSA on this evaluation."
NHTSA probing Hyundai Veloster for shattering sunroofs originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 15:45:00 EST.
For the second time in about a month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall on the Chevrolet Sonic. Last month, around 44,000 2012 Sonics were recalled for a leaky windshield washer reservoir hose, and now over 4,700 owners of the 2013 Sonic can expect to receive a recall notice.

This time around, NHTSA says that certain Sonics built between May 29 and August 29 exhibit a condition where the car's turn signals don't operate properly, meaning the car does not conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard regulations. Like the previous recall on the Sonic, this one has a relatively easy fix that requires the body control module and the key fobs to be reprogrammed.

General Motors will start notifying owners next week, but for more information, check out NTHSA's press release below.
Continue reading Chevy recalling over 4,700 Sonic subcompacts over faulty turn signals

Chevy recalling over 4,700 Sonic subcompacts over faulty turn signals originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 09:30:00 EST.
Here's a type of recall you don't see everyday: Mercedes-Benz is recalling some 2011 G-Class SUV's because of faulty interior trim.

Only 189 2011 G550 and G55 AMG vehicles are potentially affected, but the issue is fairly serious. In the event of a passenger airbag deployment, a molding strip on the airbag cover flap could dislodge and "become a projectile in the passenger compartment."

Mercedes will be notifying owners in September, and dealers will fix the trim strip, gratis.

Kawasaki has issued a recall of its 2011 and 2012 Ninja ZX-10R supersport bikes over an oil leak. The joint where the starter mounts to the crankcase is susceptible to oil leakage, which can lead to oil pooling onto the crankcase and then spilling onto the rear tire.

There are 4,170 bikes affected by the recall. Kawasaki will notify owners "shortly," at which time they can take their motorcycles to the dealer to have the crankcase resealed free of charge. There's a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration below with more details.
Continue reading Kawasaki recalling 4,000 Ninja models due to oil leaks

Kawasaki recalling 4,000 Ninja models due to oil leaks originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 07:59:00 EST.
More details have surfaced in the latest 2013 Ford Escape recall, with blame for problematic fuel lines falling on supplier TI Automotive, according to Reuters. Ford told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the defective fuel lines were "mechanically scored," which could cause the lines to leak.

The recall was announced last week, with Ford asking owners to park their vehicles because of the threat of engine fires posed by the leaky fuel lines. Yesterday it became known that Ford would be reimbursing dealers an extra $300 per customer vehicle serviced under the recall.

Ford's desire to expediently wrap up the recall and its negative publicity will surely cost the automaker, but not nearly as much as we had previously estimated. According to the report, Ford has sold 4,800 of the 11,500 Escape crossovers covered in the recall, vehicles that were built between October 8, 2011 and July 11, 2012. That means the additional $300 payments would cost the automaker $1.44 million.

TI Automotive continues to provide fuel lines for the Escape, according to Reuters, and has fixed the manufacturing problem.
Supplier to blame for Escape engine recall? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 10:44:00 EST.
How important is the launch of the redesigned Escape to Ford? Apparently enough that Dearborn is throwing money at dealers to try and make the new model's teething problems go away, and fast.

According to The Detroit Free Press, Ford is giving dealers a $300 spiff for each recalled 2013 Ford Escape they repair for a customer, with a goal of having all 11,500 Escapes that have been recalled for potentially leaky fuel lines fixed within two weeks. The recall is a particularly serious one, as it could lead to an engine fire.

Some simple math says that Ford could pay out as much as $3.45 million in extra compensation to its dealers. Clearly the company wants to avoid the problems it had launching the original Escape in 2000, which was recalled multiple times soon after going on sale.

Ford is recommending 2013 Escapes subject to the recall not be driven until repaired, and customers are being issued loaner vehicles in the meantime, according to the report. Dealers have also been instructed to top off the tanks and wash and vacuum the vehicles they service under the recall.
Ford paying dealers $300 to fix each recalled Escape originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jul 2012 17:28:00 EST.
