Whether or not you've seen and judged the trailer for the audio-oculo-neural assault that will be Fast and Furious 6 - you know, the one where an Alfa Romeo hatchback pulls down a military cargo jet at full throttle and then a pristine Dodge Charger erupts from the jet's flaming nosecone - we'd like to recommend you check out a facsimile made with R/C cars. That means that none of the classic and current metal our own Michael Harley got to check out on the Universal lot was harmed during filming.

NitroRCX replaced all but a few of the driving scenes in trailer with its own R/C creations, and it's a goof to watch - they've made a delightful parody of a franchise that's become parodic. They even kept the flaming jet crash, but used an arguably cooler stand-in. You can watch the NitroRCX take below, and we've also added the actual movie trailer so you can compare and contrast.
Continue reading Fast and Furious 6 trailer redone with R/C cars

Fast and Furious 6 trailer redone with R/C cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Apr 2013 19:15:00 EST.
If you want a new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette but can't quite save up enough pennies for the monthly payment, we have good news for you. Toymaker New Bright has pulled the covers off of its 1:8 scale remote-controlled version of the American sports car. Complete with a very detailed interior and LED headlights, this large-scale R/C is as close as most of us will ever come to having one of the menacing Chevrolet models to call our very own. New Bright still hasn't released pricing or availability, but word has it the coupe should hit the market soon.

Right now, it appears as if the C7 will hit shelves in Torch Red, though we don't know if other colors are planned as well. The good news is that New Bright isn't exactly turning its back on the old C6 - representatives say the company will continue to make its popular C6R racecar for those who prefer round taillights.
New Bright creating exclusive 1:8 scale radio-controlled C7 Corvette originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Feb 2013 17:45:00 EST.
By now, you've probably gathered we have a soft spot for clever Lego creations. And, if you've been paying attention, you likely know we love remote-controlled gadgets more than some of our own relatives, so combining the two is a surefire way to grab our attention. Throw in a little homage to tacky television, and we're all yours. Such is the case with this wicked R/C Lego A-Team van. Capable of tackling tricky slaloms and bringing plans together, the little van is one Mr. T away from pitying a fool.

Unlike the R/C Lego Tumbler we saw not too long ago, this A-Team van seems more than capable of holding together long enough to have some fun. You can check out a video of the van whipping around the builder's living room below. Be sure to watch the video below all the way through the end to put an eyeball on the steering and propulsion systems. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have reruns to watch.
R/C Lego A-Team van is triple-geek cool originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 Jan 2013 17:14:00 EST.
The successor to the BYD F3 has gone through a couple of name changes on its way to production, finally settling on Su Rui, but its USP has been locked in since the beginning: remote control operation. That's right, a full-sized, road-legal sedan that can be driven by remote control. Of course, the R/C functionality has strict limitations: the Su Rui has a max speed of two kilometers an hour when being operated remotely and it only works when the operator is no more than 33 feet away. But who cares about that - it's a full-size R/C car!

In case you were wondering about the Su Rui's specs, there are two engines on the menu, one is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 109 horsepower running through a five-speed manual, the other a 1.5-liter turbo four with 154 horsepower and the choice of a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The remote control comes standard with the 1.5 turbo and, we're assuming, the automatic.

The car can be started and driven in all directions with the remote, and BYD has pushed the feature as handy for getting into tight parking spots or retrieving your car when it's raining and you don't have an umbrella. We figure that once the black hats get working on it, there'll be a few more tasks the Chinese sedan is good for. You can watch it in action in the video below.
Continue reading New Chinese car can be driven by remote control

New Chinese car can be driven by remote control originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Aug 2012 15:00:00 EST.
Unless you find yourself a native of Detroit or the city's surrounding precincts, you may have an image of the metropolis as a hive of decay. We can hardly blame you. The media and visitors alike love nothing more than to feast their lenses on the area's decaying underbelly, but it's far from all bad - there are many pockets of the Motor City that are undergoing bona-fide revivals. Detroit was built on the back of the automobile, so it's ironic that the automobile arguably sparked the city's undoing - even before the industry nosedived. That's because the mass production of cars led to them being affordable to everyday people, which in turn led to suburbanization, a move that eventually stripped much of Detroit's core.

Of course, Detroit's 'ruin porn' certainly has a photogenic aspect, and YouTube user Tretch5000 seems know that fact all too well. The master quadrocopter pilot strapped an HD camera to his remote-control flying machine and proceeded to film both the good and bad sides of The D.

With a little bit of clever editing we get to see the area's tired industrial ruins and its once-mighty Michigan Central train station juxtaposed against the greenery of Belle Isle and just about everything in between. It's a unique perspective on a still-iconic part of America's automotive heartland. Take a look at the video for yourself below.
Continue reading Tour the broken and beautiful parts of Detroit by drone

Tour the broken and beautiful parts of Detroit by drone originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jul 2012 12:45:00 EST.
Traxxas has done a smart job of establishing itself as a toymaker for grownups. With radio-controlled iterations of Ken Block's Ford Fiesta gymkhana car and Vaughn Gittin Jr's Ford Mustang drift machine, the company has something for everyone.

Or at least it does now. Traxxas is now producing R/C funny cars for straight-line antics. The cars are capable of over 70 miles per hour, come with an adjustable wheelie bar and a TQi 2.4GHz controller with all sorts of fun modes. Launch control, race, burnout and staging modes are all part of the programming. A 1/8th scale Christmas tree is also available.

So far, there are only four funny car models. Buyers may choose between Courtney Force's Ford Mustang, John Force's Castrol GTX Ford Mustang, Mike Neff's Castrol GTX Ford Mustang or Robert Hight's AAA Auto Club Ford Mustang. Scroll down to see a quick video of the cars in action.
Continue reading Traxxas now makes an R/C funny car.
The mantra of the builder of this R/C DeLorean replica from Back to the Future is: "куда мы идем, нам не нужны дороги." According to Google Translate, that's Russian for, "Where we're going, we don't need roads." Appropriate, eh?

With a painted foamcore body and blue LEDs, this Mr. Fusion-equipped DMC-12 sits on a quadrotor platform and is powered by a distinctly non-nuclear lithium-polymer battery juicing four motors, a speed controller and stabilizer. While no plutonium is required, this homebuilt's cool is practically radioactive. Check it out after the jump.
Continue reading R/C flying DeLorean drone doesn't need roads

R/C flying DeLorean drone doesn't need roads originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Mar 2012 12:30:00 EST.
Radio-controlled cars and trucks truly are a labor of love. An expensive hobby no matter which way you slice it, the costs get exponentially higher the more scale accurate you try to make your machines. And when you're talking R/C construction equipment, we'd wager that hundreds of dollars quickly turn into thousands of dollars.

Now that we've established that R/C machinery is an expensive hobby, let's talk about its impact as a time-sucking activity. After all, not only must you completely assemble and perfect your radio-controlled creations, you're certainly going to get them out to play with them. Or, if you're a particular Joe from Saskatchewan, you're going to do real-life work with them.

According to a massive 50-plus-page thread on scale4x4rc.org, every morning Joe gets to work by loading his scale R/C excavator onto the back of a specially made R/C semi truck, then pilots the not-so-heavy equipment into his basement construction site. And by every morning, we mean every morning since June of 2005. Now that's dedication to the hobby. At the end of each day, all the newly excavated dirt and rubble is driven up a spiraling ramp and out the basement window.

Fortunately, Joe has documented his small-scale R/C basement construction project, so we can all gawk and gander at a full suite of photographs and videos showing how it's all been done. Check out the attached image gallery and the videos after the break to see for yourself. We see only one problem... this leaves no way to eventually win the heart of a girl.
Continue reading Canadian takes over seven years to dig out basement using R/C construction equipment

Canadian takes over seven years to dig out basement using R/C construction equipment originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Feb 2012 19:58:00 EST.
We've finally come to accept the fact that we'll never be Vaughn Gittin Jr. There can be only one one pure-bred drift hooligan of his caliber on this planet and truth be told, our sideways skills are paltry at best. That doesn't mean we can't pretend, though. Gittin Jr. has teamed up with a smattering of companies to give away five very limited-edition RC cars made up in the image of his sinister Ford Mustang GT drift machine. Only 5,000 of the HPI RC Ford Mustang cars will be produced in total, and Gittin Jr. is giving five of them away to Facebook fans.

To get the word out, Gittin Jr., K&N, Monster Energy and Falken Tire crafted a video demonstrating just what happens when the drifter can't get his hands on the scale Mustang. An epic chase ensues, with the RC car taking a little "How it's Made" tour of the K&N factory. The clip also features a few outtakes worth watching, as well. We won't spoil it for you, but we will say more than one RC car gave its life in the making of the film. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Let's be honest: 100 miles per hour is fast. Especially for a remote control car. Sure, there are real cars that can easily double than number, and a few baseball pitchers who can throw that fast, but this is a toy we're talking about. Except that it's not.

"The XO-1 is not a toy and is intended for use by experts only," says Traxxas, who warns that the XO-1 carries a risk of fire, injury or death! Further suggestions include operating the car only on a closed course, like a real racetrack or drag strip, where the XO-1 should be able to go 0-60 in just 2.3 seconds, on the way to its 100-mile-per-hour-plus top speed.

Controlling this lithium-polymer-battery-powered, all-wheel-drive projectile requires an iPhone or iPod Touch, so you can run the Traxxas Link telemetry app that unlocks the car's top speed. Traxxas suggests you be of legal driving age to operate its 100-mph speedster, and helping to keep it out of underage hands is a $1099.99 price tag.

It's no Ford F-150, but this toy tank earns our respect for its towing prowess nonetheless. That second-generation Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Model 90 weighs over two tons, but the not-so-little remote control tank seems to have no problem pulling it through a parking lot to the amusement of quite a few onlookers.

Like any YouTube video, we wonder what - if anything - we are not seeing. In the first shot, it does appear that the passenger door is open. Could someone be pushing to help the SUV overcome inertia?

Click through the jump to see the tank towing video, plus a little bonus footage of that late-90's Land Cruiser Prado.
Continue reading Watch this R/C tank tow a real Toyota SUV

Watch this R/C tank tow a real Toyota SUV originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 17:00:00 EST.
Radio-controlled cars and trucks can be tons of fun, as anyone who grew up piloting the little toys will surely tell you. Judging by our own experience, there's no youngster that doesn't think of what great projects could be completed if he or she were only an adult with a nearly unlimited budget. Thing is, most of us never actually pursue such ideas when we reach adulthood.

Thankfully, there are a select few that really do follow through with their childhood aspirations of radio-controlled lunacy. Like the man in the video after the break, who mounted a pulse jet engine to the chassis of a relatively cheap radio controlled truck purchased from Radio Shack (which apparently sponsored the project for PopSci). Four pounds of thrust may not sound like a whole heck of a lot, but it's plenty sufficient to get this truck moving at ludicrous speed.

Best of all, the project was all captured on video, including some on-car footage from a GoPro mounted at the nose. See for yourself after the break, and if you want to replicate the good times, a complete parts list is included at Popular Science, as well.

*UPDATE: We heard from the builder (Thanks, Vin!), who sent us a link to a slightly longer video, which we've pasted after the break.
Continue reading Pulse jet plus truck from Radio Shack equals comically overpowered R/C fun [UPDATE]

Pulse jet plus truck from Radio Shack equals comically overpowered R/C fun [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Oct 2011 16:56:00 EST.
Toys are infinitely cooler these days than they were when we were kids. While we had to subside on crappy Lego houses and weak Nerf guns, youngsters now get to craft accurate models of the Millennium Falcon and play with a foam arsenal that would make the CIA blush with envy.

The same goes for remote-controlled vehicles. We've already seen exactly how much fun can be had with a point-of-view camera, an RC Jeep and a little time. Now another crafty RC aficionado has applied the same camera tech to a remote-controlled F16 fighter jet.

There aren't words to describe how awesome this is.

By using a live feed from the camera, the pilot effectively gets the same view out of the cockpit that an actual pilot would enjoy. The creator even wired up an altimeter so the pilot can tell exactly how far off the ground the plane is at any given moment. Hit the jump to check it out. Bonus points for the Kenny Loggins soundtrack.
Continue reading R/C F16 jet with swiveling pilot's view blows our tiny little minds

R/C F16 jet with swiveling pilot's view blows our tiny little minds originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 19:27:00 EST.
Like it or not, summer is slowly sinking to a close. School is back in session and days are getting shorter by the moment, so you better get all of your beach-going shenanigans in while you still can. In the case of one very intrepid remote-control vehicle enthusiast, that means cruising the sand in an RC Jeep, complete with a first-person camera and intercom system for stirring up all sorts of trouble. That includes attempting what could very well be the word's first remote-controlled flirtation.

Is it a little creepy to invite a young lady back to your beach house via an RC GI Joe and camera? Undoubtedly. The whole thing looks a bit like the intro to a slasher flick to us, but what do we know? The moral of the story is that you can still play with toys without being condemned to a life of eating Easy Mac alone in your parents' basement. Either that, or don't go in the house. One of the two. Hit the jump to see the videos for yourself.
Continue reading Size doesn't matter when using your car to flirt

Size doesn't matter when using your car to flirt originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 19:57:00 EST.
"I can remember when my grandfather taught me how to skip stones. You know what he told me?"

"Always make sure the stone is flat..."

Yes, we all remember the classic scene from Speed Zone (also known as Cannonball Run 3 or Cannonball Fever) where the old man is out at the lake teaching his little grandson to skip stones. Just as he's instructing on how to throw the stone at the correct angle, the training session is interrupted by a red Lamborghini Countach that flies off a short pier, skips across the water and ends up safely on the other side.

No, it's not that easy in real life. Unless, of course, you do happen to have a vehicle with a relatively flat bottom along with the proper tires and lots and lots of power.
If you're reading these words, there's a good chance that there's at least one remote-controlled car sulking in your basement or garaged in a cardboard box in the attic. Most of us walk away from R/Cs for good once we get our hands on full-scale transportation, but a select few individuals keep tinkering with the scale models. Those guys go on to create some pretty awesome contraptions.

Guys like Nic Case. Case set the world record for the fastest remote controlled car a few years ago by clocking a top speed of 161.76 miles per hour with his custom-built racer.

The car uses a carbon-fiber chassis and $4,000 worth of electrical components to do the deed. If that's not crazy enough for your, Case says that he now has his heart set on building an R/C capable of ripping past the 200-mph barrier. The mad scientist says that he's currently in the midst of construction. Hit the jump to see the Schumacher Mi 3 whirr its way into the record books.
Continue reading Schumacher Mi-3 lays claim to title of World's Fastest R/C car with 161.76 mph pass

Schumacher Mi-3 lays claim to title of World's Fastest R/C car with 161.76 mph pass originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Jun 2011 12:31:00 EST.
There's so much awesome in this video, we can barely stand it. The owner of this particular remote-control Peterbilt has put his scale rig to work towing a full-scale Nissan Patrol. We're not entirely sure what sort of drivetrain this mini-semi is packing, nor do we know if it is receiving any help from the engine in the SUV. Even if the Patrol did lend a hand, the fact that the R/C machine can pull around a full-grown adult without breaking a sweat is impressive enough.

Of course, its ability to throw smoke at the flip of a switch makes us giggle, too.

Now we want to see this thing pulling a trailer packed with tiny contraband Coors alongside a certain scale Trans Am. Hit the jump to see the full video.

We're looking for a new hobby, and we think we've narrowed it down. The world of remote control vehicles has grabbed our attention and we're eager to learn more. So we grabbed the camera, ventured out to the 2011 Remote Control Convention at the Pomona Fairplex and figured we'd totally understand the hobby by lunchtime.

We were mistaken.

In fact, we were wholly unprepared to take in the maelstrom of activity and information presented at RCX 2011. It's like SEMA for R/C world and over 17,000 folks descended on the convention grounds over the course of two days. Bikes, cars, trucks, planes, helicopters, trains and motorcycles were all on display.

The RCX 2011 experience isn't just about looking at vehicles in their packaging, however, because numerous tracks were set up to let us take the miniature wheel. Professionals raced their nitro buggies and truggies on a course set up with large jumps while remote control rock crawlers tackled scaled-down rugged terrain. Nearby, super sideways driving was taking place on both indoor and outdoor courses.

Even though the action was scaled down, there were plenty of examples of serious speed. Scaled-down top-fuel dragsters lined up side-by-side as those wielding the controllers eyed the light tree. Gas-powered race cars and motorcycles attacked a twisting course while the buzz of airplanes, helicopters and scale powerboats droned on in the background. When we wanted a break from the speed, we stared at the hypnotic scale train that ambled around a wonderfully detailed town.

The event is an orgy of remote control action, and it only served to bolster our interest in the hobby. We entered the RCX 2011 doors thinking we'd narrow down our choices, but the convention has only served to confuse. Do we want electric or gas, car or truck? You could walk away from RCX with a great toy for a few Jacksons, or you could've spent a bucketful of Benjamins on a high-powered nitro screamer.

We now know that we've got a lot more to learn about remote control vehicles. The Remote Control Convention isn't a one-time event either. It's traveling around the country and you can check out the schedule at the RCX website.

Click past the jump to watch some quick clips of various vehicles in action.

It's only February but we already have something to add to our holiday wish list: an R/C drift car. We may never be as good as the folks in the video, which you can watch after the jump, but that doesn't mean we can't spend countless weekend hours practicing. Still, our mad skills won't come close to this crew of RC drift addicts, whose sideways sliding skills are on display for spectators in both human and action-figure form.

Regardless of your stance on drifting, the post-jump video shows people having a good time playing with remote control cars, and that's something we can all get behind. Slap the tagline "Fun for ages 1-100" on your computer and click past the jump to watch the down-sized drifting action.

Mitsubishi wants people to take notice of its 2011 Outlander Sport. There will be traditional print and television ad campaigns, but the automaker is also exploring new ways of reaching new car buyers. Through its creative agency 180 LA, Mitsubishi plans to put a bunch of car shoppers behind the wheel of the new crossover. Not literally, but virtually.

The automaker is rolling out its Mitsubishi Live Drive campaign that puts drivers behind the wheel of an actual Outlander Sport. They won't be sitting in the vehicle but instead they'll be in front of a computer. The CUV will be controlled remotely via users on the Internet. While we don't want to be anywhere near the car when this is happening, it's certainly a novel re-imagining of the test drive concept.

The Mitsubishi Live Drive event kicks off November 1, 2010 and runs through November 10. If you're interested in testing out your computer driving skills, you can sign up starting October 15 at OutlanderSport.com. In the meantime, you can catch a sneak peak at what's in store by viewing the video and official press release after the jump. Thanks to everyone for the tips!
