If you're one of those souls who prize vintage arcade cabinets, you may want to look away. A group has torn into a pair of classic Sega Rally games to create something a little more creative. Using the old steering wheel and pedal inputs, the team created a virtual racing game that controls real radio-control cars. The cool part is that the driver can choose from either an on-car camera or a top-down view as a shout out to the racing games of old.

According to our friends at Engadget, the project only ran into one real challenge, which was getting the feed to pump through the old CRT monitors in the cabinets. In the end, the guys had to scrap using the old tubes in favor of a more modern screen.

Sure, it breaks our hearts a little to see Sega Rally get cut on, but we'd be lying if we said we didn't want to spend an hour or two behind the wheel of this duo. You can check out the creation in the video below.
Continue reading Sega arcade game cabinets turned into R/C car controllers

Sega arcade game cabinets turned into R/C car controllers originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 03 Dec 2012 10:00:00 EST.
If you're reading these words, there's a good chance that there's at least one remote-controlled car sulking in your basement or garaged in a cardboard box in the attic. Most of us walk away from R/Cs for good once we get our hands on full-scale transportation, but a select few individuals keep tinkering with the scale models. Those guys go on to create some pretty awesome contraptions.

Guys like Nic Case. Case set the world record for the fastest remote controlled car a few years ago by clocking a top speed of 161.76 miles per hour with his custom-built racer.

The car uses a carbon-fiber chassis and $4,000 worth of electrical components to do the deed. If that's not crazy enough for your, Case says that he now has his heart set on building an R/C capable of ripping past the 200-mph barrier. The mad scientist says that he's currently in the midst of construction. Hit the jump to see the Schumacher Mi 3 whirr its way into the record books.
Continue reading Schumacher Mi-3 lays claim to title of World's Fastest R/C car with 161.76 mph pass

Schumacher Mi-3 lays claim to title of World's Fastest R/C car with 161.76 mph pass originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Jun 2011 12:31:00 EST.
There's so much awesome in this video, we can barely stand it. The owner of this particular remote-control Peterbilt has put his scale rig to work towing a full-scale Nissan Patrol. We're not entirely sure what sort of drivetrain this mini-semi is packing, nor do we know if it is receiving any help from the engine in the SUV. Even if the Patrol did lend a hand, the fact that the R/C machine can pull around a full-grown adult without breaking a sweat is impressive enough.

Of course, its ability to throw smoke at the flip of a switch makes us giggle, too.

Now we want to see this thing pulling a trailer packed with tiny contraband Coors alongside a certain scale Trans Am. Hit the jump to see the full video.

R/C cars in slow motion - Click above for the video after the jump

As Dave Chapelle irrefutably proved in 2004, everything is better in slow motion. Similarly, scale race cars are nearly always more interesting than the real deal, partially because any Joe can afford a WRC Subaru that runs off of glow fuel or electric power, and also because sliding a 1/10th remote-controlled car into a ditch is never really "game over" for the day. Plus, as Nissan Canada recently proved with its spot for the 2010 Sentra SE-R, it's hard to tell the little guys from the real deal on film.

So what happens when the you combine scale R/C cars and slow motion? Pure gold, friends. Aside from seeing their Lexan body shells deflect and bend under the bristling power of tiny motors, we also get our minds blown with just how real these things look. Throw in a slightly out-of-focus image, a perfectly designed course and good looking car, and you could nearly replicate your favorite WRC footage. Hop the jump to see for yourself.

If you're like us, chances are you spend just as much time drooling over the latest automotive toys as you do the real deal. Nissan has embraced its inner child with a new spot for the 2010 Sentra SE-R, filming the entire commercial in 1/10th scale with the help of a fleet of radio-controlled vehicles. There's even a R/C helicopter in on the action.

As the story goes, this ad was worked up by TBWA\Toronto for Nissan Canada, and the crew has been kind enough to provide the world with a "making of" video, too. Us? We're just happy to see Nissan spend some money promoting the SE-R at all. Now, if you'll excuse us, we'll be in the parking lot perfecting our R/C drifts. Hop the jump for a look at the full spot, and don't forget to catch the behind-the-scenes video, too. Hat tip to Lindsey!
How so? Its system has a camera mounted in the car's driver's seat. It transmits its signal wirelessly to VR-style goggles that give the operator a first-person view of the terrain ahead of the car itself. That alone would be neat, but the camera has pan and tilt functionality that the driver controls by simply moving his or her head to "look" in each direction. The video pasted after the jump gives you a taste of what what you'd see if the glasses were strapped to your noggin. Granted, you'll look like a dork with the antenna-festooned goggles on, but at least you'll be having fun. Fat Shark also sells the camera and components separately, so you can use them on model airplanes, too. Thanks for the tip, David!

[Source: Fat Shark]
Continue reading First-person R/C car puts you in the driver's seat

First-person R/C car puts you in the driver's seat originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jun 2008 19:57:00 EST. Measuring in at around 5 inches in length, the cars are exquisitely detailed, and as you'll see in the video after they jump, they go like stink. The embed is a long form commercial/promo that centers mainly on the Mini-Z AWD series. The pair of R34 Skylines you see duking it out on the track both sport the AWD chassis under their bodywork, and it's pretty awesome to see how well the cars handle when the remote's in the hands of someone who knows what he's doing. Even more impressive is when the "drivers" start drifting the cars at around the midway point. The drifts are deftly executed and it look great on video, and it leads directly to a second drift demo using the Mini-Z racers based on the cars from the Manga and Anime drift series, Initial D. Stay through the end to see a Countach LP400 and a Ferrari F430 tackle the miniature race course, too. We totally want one of these little cars, even though we're more likely to put it into the kitchen wall at the RC-car equivalent of 150 mph than we are to execute a successful drift.

Video after the jump.

[Source: YouTube]
Continue reading Bring the Toys! These true baby utes were built for the European Athletics Championship in Gothemnburg and will be used to transport javelins, hammers and discusses from wherever they land on the field back to the throwers. Each one was hand built by Volvo and feautres an open roof through which discusses and hammers can be placed inside and a special javelin rack up top that is unlikely to see produciton on full-scale XC90s. The radio-controlled Volvos are powered by 2 hp electric motors and can ferry four discusses, three javelins or two hammers back to competitors. Though Volvo has no plans to produce them, we're sure some Volvo engineers will have some fun lunch hours after these RC XC90s finish their tour of duty.

[Source: Volvo]
VIDEO: Volvo's RC mini-XC90 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Aug 2006 15:04:00 EST.
