If you've been waiting for someone to combine R/C cars and Ken Block's brand of gymkhana, you'll want to pay a visit to Hot Wheels. The toy maker has produced a replica of Block's rallying Ford Fiesta, and after you load the required eight AA batteries you'll be drifting it around corners WRC-style in much less time than it took Block to learn his craft.

We won't mention the center-mounted wheel under the car that makes it all a bit easier. Instead, you can scroll down to see a video of Ken Block writ small for yourself.
Continue reading Ken Block's latest Gymkhana vid goes small scale

Ken Block's latest Gymkhana vid goes small scale originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Apr 2012 14:01:00 EST.
If you're anything like us, you likely have more than a few remote controlled cars collecting dust in the basement. Instructables.com has taken the time to show us just what can be accomplished with a little time and motivation using those machines and some low-buck electronics. Namely, your own battery-powered autonomous machine.

Randy Sarafan has worked up a step-by step instruction manual for creating a basic robot capable of sensing and avoiding obstacles of its own accord. While basic, the platform allows for greater customization, including more complex logic and the addition of an array of sensors.

Sounds like a good time to us. You can click past the jump to check out a video of Sarafan's machine or head over to Instructables.com for the full briefing. If you get crazy with your own R/C collection, be sure to drop us a line and show us what you came up with.
Continue reading Learn how to turn an R/C car into an autonomous vehicle

Learn how to turn an R/C car into an autonomous vehicle originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 19:01:00 EST.
If you've never played Reckless Racing 2, odds are you've taken the helm of similar games in the past. Players are given control of a vehicle viewed from above as it bashes its way around a dirt track with other cars.

Sony Ericsson recently partnered up with noted car hacker James Brighton to create a real-life version of Reckless Driving 2 using a pair of droptop MG models and Sony's new Xperia Studio smartphone. Sony and Brighton then invited Martin Noriander, the developer behind Reckless Racing 2, and journalist Hunter Skipworth to compete head-to-head with the real-life cars.

Who came out on top? We won't spoil it for you, but we will say there was a good bit of carnage as the duo tried to manipulate their chariots around the course. See below to check out the quick video for yourself.
Continue reading Reckless Racing 2 video game turned into radio-controlled reality

Reckless Racing 2 video game turned into radio-controlled reality originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Mar 2012 14:58:00 EST.
We've finally come to accept the fact that we'll never be Vaughn Gittin Jr. There can be only one one pure-bred drift hooligan of his caliber on this planet and truth be told, our sideways skills are paltry at best. That doesn't mean we can't pretend, though. Gittin Jr. has teamed up with a smattering of companies to give away five very limited-edition RC cars made up in the image of his sinister Ford Mustang GT drift machine. Only 5,000 of the HPI RC Ford Mustang cars will be produced in total, and Gittin Jr. is giving five of them away to Facebook fans.

To get the word out, Gittin Jr., K&N, Monster Energy and Falken Tire crafted a video demonstrating just what happens when the drifter can't get his hands on the scale Mustang. An epic chase ensues, with the RC car taking a little "How it's Made" tour of the K&N factory. The clip also features a few outtakes worth watching, as well. We won't spoil it for you, but we will say more than one RC car gave its life in the making of the film. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Let's be honest: 100 miles per hour is fast. Especially for a remote control car. Sure, there are real cars that can easily double than number, and a few baseball pitchers who can throw that fast, but this is a toy we're talking about. Except that it's not.

Helping to keep it out of underage hands is a $1099.99 price tag.

"The XO-1 is not a toy and is intended for use by experts only," says Traxxas, who warns that the XO-1 carries a risk of fire, injury or death! Further suggestions include operating the car only on a closed course, like a real racetrack or drag strip, where the XO-1 should be able to go 0-60 in just 2.3 seconds, on the way to its 100-mile-per-hour-plus top speed.

Controlling this lithium-polymer-battery-powered, all-wheel-drive projectile requires an iPhone or iPod Touch, so you can run the Traxxas Link telemetry app that unlocks the car's top speed. Traxxas suggests you be of legal driving age to operate its 100-mph speedster, and helping to keep it out of underage hands is a $1099.99 price tag.

Like it or not, summer is slowly sinking to a close. School is back in session and days are getting shorter by the moment, so you better get all of your beach-going shenanigans in while you still can. In the case of one very intrepid remote-control vehicle enthusiast, that means cruising the sand in an RC Jeep, complete with a first-person camera and intercom system for stirring up all sorts of trouble. That includes attempting what could very well be the word's first remote-controlled flirtation.

Is it a little creepy to invite a young lady back to your beach house via an RC GI Joe and camera? Undoubtedly. The whole thing looks a bit like the intro to a slasher flick to us, but what do we know? The moral of the story is that you can still play with toys without being condemned to a life of eating Easy Mac alone in your parents' basement. Either that, or don't go in the house. One of the two. Hit the jump to see the videos for yourself.
Continue reading Size doesn't matter when using your car to flirt

Size doesn't matter when using your car to flirt originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 19:57:00 EST.
"I can remember when my grandfather taught me how to skip stones. You know what he told me?"

"Always make sure the stone is flat..."

Yes, we all remember the classic scene from Speed Zone (also known as Cannonball Run 3 or Cannonball Fever) where the old man is out at the lake teaching his little grandson to skip stones. Just as he's instructing on how to throw the stone at the correct angle, the training session is interrupted by a red Lamborghini Countach that flies off a short pier, skips across the water and ends up safely on the other side.

No, it's not that easy in real life. Unless, of course, you do happen to have a vehicle with a relatively flat bottom along with the proper tires and lots and lots of power. Or at least the radio-controlled equivalent. Need proof? We suggest you see how it's done in the video after the break.
Continue reading R/C car takes hydroplaning to a new level

R/C car takes hydroplaning to a new level originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Aug 2011 20:01:00 EST.
There's so much awesome in this video, we can barely stand it. The owner of this particular remote-control Peterbilt has put his scale rig to work towing a full-scale Nissan Patrol. We're not entirely sure what sort of drivetrain this mini-semi is packing, nor do we know if it is receiving any help from the engine in the SUV. Even if the Patrol did lend a hand, the fact that the R/C machine can pull around a full-grown adult without breaking a sweat is impressive enough.

Of course, its ability to throw smoke at the flip of a switch makes us giggle, too.

Now we want to see this thing pulling a trailer packed with tiny contraband Coors alongside a certain scale Trans Am. Hit the jump to see the full video.
R/C drift car slides past fans of all sizes - Click above to watch video after the jump

It's only February but we already have something to add to our holiday wish list: an R/C drift car. We may never be as good as the folks in the video, which you can watch after the jump, but that doesn't mean we can't spend countless weekend hours practicing. Still, our mad skills won't come close to this crew of RC drift addicts, whose sideways sliding skills are on display for spectators in both human and action-figure form.

Regardless of your stance on drifting, the post-jump video shows people having a good time playing with remote control cars, and that's something we can all get behind. Slap the tagline "Fun for ages 1-100" on your computer and click past the jump to watch the down-sized drifting action.

Master of the Gymkhanna (with a minor in marketing) Ken Block has teamed up with Traxxas to create a radio-controlled version of Block's #43 Ford Fiesta. The 1/16-scale Fiesta is fitted with a brushless motor that turns all four wheels and sends the mini-Block car down your driveway at up to 30 miles per hour. If that's not enough juice to play out your dreams of winning a Gymkhana event, you can opt for another setup that features a new pinion gear, second NiMH battery and series connector. The additional hardware raises the top speed to over 50 mph.

The car is currently selling for around $300. No word on whether that price includes replaceable fenders and other body panels... a necessity after the Ken Block RC car inevitably hits a tree. Check out a mini Gymkhanna-style video of the micro car in action after the break... and, answering the last possible remaining question, proof that it will indeed blend.

In spite of being busy making deals, preparing the Tesla factory and watching the stock price shoot up, the upstart automaker has still found time to remember the people who helped get it where it is today - it's early adopting, Roadster-buying customers. And to share the good cheer, Tesla is giving them yet another Tesla Roadster.

The beneficiaries of Tesla's largess won't be driving these new battery-powered electrics over the river and through the woods to Grandma's, though. These are radio-controlled Roadsters, which could go some way to reinforcing the notion that this new automobile company has a focus on customers like no other. This is an idea that will serve Tesla well as it moves forward toward a brave new oil-free motoring future. Hit the jump for video of the RC Tesla Roadster getting put through its paces.

Hot Wheels has just rolled out two new R/C cars in the Stealth Rides line. The collapsible racers fit into their own cases which double as infrared remote controls. At the moment there are just two vehicles - one with wheels and another with treads - but in October Batman's Tumbler joins the party. The good news is they fit in any pocket, run for about 45 minutes and cost just $25. The not so good news is that when that 45 minutes is up you'll have to replace five watch batteries - three in the car, two in the remote - to get them going again.
Like the vast majority of humanity, we were never able to lay our hands on one of the 20 Lamborghini Reventón models the company built for the fabulously wealthy. We had neither the $1.27 million it took to call the car your very own nor the connections to be one of the few to even have the chance to purchase said Raging Bull. That's just fine, though, because Lamborghini has partnered up with De Agostini to build a 1:10 scale R/C replica of the car for the masses. Well, maybe not the masses per-se - the company is only building 65 examples, so this ain't your garden-variety Nikko or Tamiya.

Each one of the cars is crafted with impressive detail and features a 3cc gasoline engine mated to a two-speed transmission, a fully-independent suspension with hydraulic shocks and four-wheel disc brakes - all on an R/C car. Insane? Sure, but it's our kind of crazy. Unfortunately, with so few of the cars being produced, we're guessing they won't be cheap enough for anyone we know to afford. History repeats itself. You can head over to the R/C car's site for a closer look.
Leave it to the Germans to turn a real-life radio control car, a video camera with a wireless transmitter and an arcade box into the best 3D rendition of the old Playstation game Wipeout we've ever seen. If designer Malte Jehmlich and friends would have stopped after designing a massive multi-level carboard track for their remote control cars, we would have thought it was pretty cool. But the innovative crew attached a plate to their 1/28 scale car and mounted a video camera with a wireless transmitter that sends a video signal to an arcade racing cabinet to make this a truly multi-dimensional video game. The racing cabinet is equipped with a steering wheel and a monitor that displays the r/c car's progress in real time. The whole project took them two months to put together.

Jehmlich and his friends are currently working on integrating force feedback and power-ups using sensors built into the track. Very cool, indeed. Hit the jump to watch video of the Great Room-sized arcade game in action. We're thinking that we'd want one of these in the basement, but we're not sure if our wives would approve.
Someone going by the handle "Sheepo" spent who knows how many hours satisfying the urge to build a Bugatti Veyron out of Lego Technic pieces. Among its many features are a remote controlled braking system, power targa roof and motorized rear spoiler. And then there's that working seven-speed sequential gearbox - even the gear lever moves - plus reverse. If it goes 254 miles per hour to scale, we'll be even more impressed. And to any of you with this much time on your hands and dreams in your head, keep up the good work. Follow the jump to see it in action. Hat tip to Cameron!

R/C cars in slow motion - Click above for the video after the jump

As Dave Chapelle irrefutably proved in 2004, everything is better in slow motion. Similarly, scale race cars are nearly always more interesting than the real deal, partially because any Joe can afford a WRC Subaru that runs off of glow fuel or electric power, and also because sliding a 1/10th remote-controlled car into a ditch is never really "game over" for the day. Plus, as Nissan Canada recently proved with its spot for the 2010 Sentra SE-R, it's hard to tell the little guys from the real deal on film.

So what happens when the you combine scale R/C cars and slow motion? Pure gold, friends. Aside from seeing their Lexan body shells deflect and bend under the bristling power of tiny motors, we also get our minds blown with just how real these things look. Throw in a slightly out-of-focus image, a perfectly designed course and good looking car, and you could nearly replicate your favorite WRC footage. Hop the jump to see for yourself.
If you're like us, chances are you spend just as much time drooling over the latest automotive toys as you do the real deal. Nissan has embraced its inner child with a new spot for the 2010 Sentra SE-R, filming the entire commercial in 1/10th scale with the help of a fleet of radio-controlled vehicles. There's even a R/C helicopter in on the action.
Us? We're just happy to see Nissan spend some money promoting the SE-R at all. Now, if you'll excuse us, we'll be in the parking lot perfecting our R/C drifts. Hop the jump for a look at the full spot, and don't forget to catch the behind-the-scenes video, too. Hat tip to Lindsey!

The move to electric-powered vehicles is still in its fledgling stages, but there are plenty of signs that the next few years will finally start ushering in battery-powered transportation for the masses. But there's one class of vehicle that has almost always been powered by batteries: R/C cars. Slap in a couple of 9-volt batteries and a slew of AA cells, and kids of all ages get to pretend they're Ken Block in the backyard until mom says it's time to clean up for supper.

Now that full-sized rides are finally "catching up" to their scaled-down counterparts, it appears that at least one toymaker, New Bright, has decided to take the next step: an R/C car that needs no batteries. It's called the Ecomobile, and it looks like a solar-powered freehand interpretation of a Smart ForTwo mated with a Toyota Prius. As you can see by its packaging, the Ecomobile takes great pride in the fact that it's ecopowered, economical and ecofriendly. It's even packaged in recyclable materials. It's $29.95. Al Gore can't stop smiling.

But how does it run? Well, you have to leave it out in the sun for one hour for every five minutes of play time. It's reportedly slow, too, and much like the EVs we've experienced in the real world, reviewers have said that the solar-powered toy doesn't quite run as long as its OEM-promised times state. Sound like fun? We don't think so either. So, in the spirit of the holidays, we've decided to come up with some of our favorite captions and/or headlines for this eco-tastic (or is that eco-tragic?) new toy. Here are some of our not-so-hilarious efforts:

You traded in your sports car for a Prius? Now you can limit your children's fun too!

The Ecomobile: Because your kids aren't teased enough already

The perfect toy for the kid who likes to wait to have fun

Now mom can't bitch about leaving toys in the backyard

Sweet! A toy that kids north of the Mason-Dixon line can't play with until May

As you can plainly see, we need your help. Head for the comments section and give us your best headlines for this not-so-fun-looking toy. You won't win anything for trying, but your efforts could help a misguided parent choose a different (and cooler) toy for their kid.
Caption Contest: Giving the gift of green against our better judgement originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 13 Dec 2009 20:01:00 EST.
Having grown up in the era of the Team Associated RC10, Tamiya Clod Buster and Team Losi JRX-2, we'll always have a soft spot for radio-controlled vehicles of all sorts. In fact, a few of the Autoblog staff still spend the occasional late-night tinkering on the kinds of small-scale projects that we couldn't afford to tackle in the real world. Therefore, we were naturally entranced by racing footage from Britain of some 1:5 scale RC motorcycles zipping around a makeshift race track.

The footage you see in the video was captured during the 2007 season, so you can bet that the action has only intensified since this was filmed. We only wish we were this adept racing with two wheels, be it on a real bike or with an RC controller grasped firmly in our digits.

[Source: British Radio Car Association via The Biker Gene]
Continue reading VIDEO: Radio-controlled motorcycles take to the track

VIDEO: Radio-controlled motorcycles take to the track originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 02 May 2009 11:35:00 EST.
