From the time when all we had were rumors of a Range Rover Evoque convertible, to the grainy spy shots of said topless SUV in some English alley, to the time it rolled out on the floor of the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, nothing could keep people from asking, "Is this really happening?"

To be fair, there were a number who asked in anticipation, enthused about the prospect of getting both a commanding driving position and wide open sky in a more toothsome package than the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet. Nevertheless, the number wasn't enough to recommend the concept for production: A report in Car and Driver says the prospects aren't "as bright as we were led to believe when the crossover cabrio debuted," and that instead an Evoque with a panoramic roof that opens is a better bet.

Elsewhere in the rapidly evolving Land Rover line-up, platform harmonization and more <strike>cowbell</strike> aluminum is the way forward. From the recent use of four platforms supporting six vehicles, there will soon be only two: the EUCD architecture for the LR2 and Evoque; all else will be built on a modified version of the D7 platform created for the new Range Rover. That puts not only variants like the Chinese-market long-wheelbase Range Rover in the aluminum game, but also models like the next Defender and LR4. That latter model is expected to bow next year, the Defender might need more time while the design department moves on from the DC100, which wasn't warmly received.
Range Rover Evoque convertible unlikely to see production originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 07 Apr 2013 17:02:00 EST.
The last in line is not nearly the least, as evidenced by the 2014 Range Rover Sport, which is being unveiled to what we're sure will be the delight of New York audiences. The middle child in the Land Rover Range Rover line-up, our initial impression is that, in terms of exterior design, it might have succumbed to the anonymity of middle-child-dom, losing the strength of its character for having to wear a couple of hand-me-downs from its bigger Range Rover sibling and a ton of hand-me-ups from its smaller Evoque sibling.

In front and in back it looks like a larger Evoque, with the Range Rover's tapering blade lights and LED day-time running lights. It shall be known by its twin-bar thematic elements such as the two-bar grille, the strakes in the side vents and the two vents on the hood. It's also got a faster windscreen angle and is more aerodynamic throughout, returning a coefficient of drag of just 0.34 for a vehicle that is 2.5 inches longer than before. The wheelbase has also been stretched by a huge seven inches.

Still, it's a comprehensive rework. It's new aluminum structure deletes 800 pounds of heft, and it weighs about 100 pounds less than a similarly equipped Range Rover. As with bigger bro, the Sport gets either the 340-horsepower 3.0-liter supercharged V6 or the 510-horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that are fitted with stop/start tech. Both run through a ZF eight-speed transmission, and power is put to the ground through a single-speed Torsen differential or an optional two-speed transfer case with low range.

Commanding that increased off-road capability is the Terrain Response 2 system and its new Automatic setting. It has more articulation to play with, the brand new aluminum suspension worth 21.2 degrees of articulation - and the emergency off-road high setting gets higher while the access height goes even lower.

The interior wears more soft-touch materials; features a smaller, thicker steering wheel; more sculpting and padding in the front seats and individual seating for rear occupants. With all that extra space between the wheels, the back-seaters can get inside more easily, and the "Ta da!" feature in the new Sport is a power-operated third row option for "occasional use."

Prices will begin at $63,495 for the Range Rover Sport SE and its 3.0-liter supercharged V6, then go to $68,495 for the HSE, $79,995 for the Supercharged that puts the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 underhood, and $93,295 for the Autobiography. All of those prices include the $895 destination charge.

Even with all that, we haven't begun to tell you about its new features, so have a seat and a drink while you enjoy the exhaustive press release below.
Less than 24 hours after Land Rover released its first video teaser of the upcoming 2014 Range Rover Sport ahead of its New York Auto Show debut, it appears someone has already spilled the beans. The image you see here comes from the VMax 200 Facebook page, and it clearly shows what looks to be the new Sport hanging out in a garage.

Design-wise, the new Sport appears to borrow heavily from the smaller Evoque crossover while still having plenty of cues that tie it to the all-new Big Daddy Range Rover. The two-tier grille mimics the three-tier one of the larger Range Rover, and the headlamp and taillamp clusters follow similar design cues (though the rear lights are more squared off than vertical), but parts of the front fascia are clearly reminiscent of the pretty little Evoque, as are the rocker panel flares that remind of the three-door model. Unlike its costlier Range Rover sibling, there are no vertical faux side vents embossed in the door skins - instead, there's a small fender vent above the front wheels with a pair of matte silver strakes to give directional thrust.

Land Rover has not yet released any details about the 2014 Range Rover Sport, only saying that it will be the company's "fastest, most responsive and most agile vehicle to date." Stay tuned for the official unveiling on March 26.
Are you the 2014 Range Rover Sport? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Mar 2013 12:30:00 EST.
Well, this makes sense. Considering the fact that New York is the single largest market for the Range Rover Sport, it's only fitting that Land Rover has chosen the upcoming New York Auto Show as the venue to debut the all-new 2014 model.

According to Land Rover, the new Range Rover Sport will be unveiled on March 26, the night before the show kicks off. At that time, the new luxury SUV will be driven through Manhattan in what the automaker calls a "groundbreaking live drive." The whole shebang will be broadcast to audiences around the world via the new Range Rover Sport's microsite.

Land Rover says the 2014 Range Rover Sport will be the company's "fastest, most responsive and most agile vehicle to date," and while the teaser image above doesn't give away too much (click above for a larger view), we fully expect the new SUV to incorporate design elements from both the Big Daddy Range Rover and the smaller Evoque crossover.

We'll have the full brace of information ready for you on the 26th, so stay tuned. For now, have a look below to scan Land Rover's offic ial press blast, and head over to the microsite for more information.
Continue reading Land Rover to unveil next Range Rover Sport in New York

Land Rover to unveil next Range Rover Sport in New York originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Mar 2013 08:44:00 EST.
Pink, mirror-finish paint. Or as Hamann says, "a color that exhibits nothing more but self-confidence." Basically, tuning company Hamann has created a vehicle that looks like it comes as part of the "Sex, Drugs and Rock N' Roll" Edition Barbie play set.

Its official name is the Mystère, based on the new-for-2013 Range Rover, and it's as ugly as it is shiny. As for the, um, body enhancements, Hamann created a four-part widebody kit out of carbon composite, adding 80 millimeters to the SUV's width. And by the way, don't just assume you know the full depth of the car's ugly from this fancy front three-quarter view. Have a good hard look at the nose, dead-on. Now you get it.

Hamann says that the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 has been fine-tuned and enhanced, but no power numbers are given. As for ride and handling, we can only imagine that it's significantly worse than the stock Range Rover, what with the car sitting a full 40 millimeters lower to the ground, now riding on 23-inch wheels wrapped in 305/30-series rubber.

We weren't able to get a look inside, but we can only imagine what's been done to the Rangie's interior. Hamann says the "in-house upholstery department can fulfill all your designer wishes" with a wide range of carbon, aluminum, leather, alcantara, double clear coat and stainless steel finishes.

Perhaps our favorite part about the 2013 Geneva Motor Show is seeing what the random coachbuilder companies roll out for our viewing pleasure, and this Hamann Mystère is a truly exceptional piece of show candy. Coming off press previews of the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover and the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee that involved some heavy-duty off-road rock climbing, I'm simply amazed at the capabilities that these vehicles possess. But even more impressive (or troubling depending on your perspective) is the relative ease with which you can operate these vehicles in seemingly impossible terrain.

Not that I'm a hardcore off-roader, but I've been in my share of 4x4's over the years and remember having to get out and lock hubs, shift into neutral to engage low range and learning that the accelerator and brake pedals can be your best friends or worst enemies in either moving along or getting hopelessly stuck.

Thanks to the wonders of electronics, advanced transfer cases and electric limited slip differentials, instead of manipulating levers or locking hubs, one merely has to punch a button or turn a knob to engage the right strategy to deal with whatever conditions encountered on the trail.

The spy photographers we work with are fairly adept at figuring out what it is, exactly, they happen to be taking a picture of that day. So, when the shooters send notes along with their images, we don't often quibble too much with the conclusions that they've drawn.

Case in point is this new set of spied photographs, depicting what would appear to be a variant of the Range Rover Evoque. Our man on the ground tells us that, tipped off by the slightly disfigured area around the fuel filler and the misshapen wheel arches, the larger-than-normal Evoques seen here are actually test mules for the next iteration of the Land Rover LR2. With the development still in the very early stages, the new LR2 (known elsewhere as the Freelander) may not be ready for primetime until sometime in 2015.

That all certainly makes sense from the perspective of the current Land Rover/Range Rover lineup, still we can't help but at least wonder if there's a chance that what we're seeing is the embodiment of the rumored long-wheelbase Evoque? Smart money may still be on the revised LR2, but we'll keep watching to see what these testers really turn into.
Next-gen Land Rover LR2 spotted... unless it's the LWB Evoque originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Feb 2013 16:29:00 EST.
Following a report from last week, Land Rover has officially announced that the 2014 Range Rover will be offered with a new supercharged 3.0-liter V6 as its base engine, replacing the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8. And not to worry, the charming 510-horsepower supercharged V8 will still be available.

The new V6 is the same unit recently stuffed under the hood of the Jaguar XF and XJ, good for 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, running to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission and featuring start/stop fuel-saving technology. Hitting 60 miles per hour will take 7.1 seconds - a reduction of six-tenths of a second versus the outgoing 5.0-liter mill, and top speed is rated at 130 miles per hour.

Where this new engine really helps the Range Rover is in fuel economy. The 3.0-liter engine is estimated to achieve EPA ratings of 16/22/18 miles per gallon (city/highway/combined), improvements of four mpg in each driving cycle.

The 2014 Range Rover hits showrooms this summer. Scroll down for the automaker's official release.
Continue reading Range Rover's new base V6 engine official

Range Rover's new base V6 engine official originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Feb 2013 15:59:00 EST.
The 2013 Range Rover is on waiting lists so long that Land Rover isn't even importing the base model for lack of sufficient uptake in view of limited resources. When that backlog is all cleared up, there's a 15-page booklet worth of changes coming for the 2014 model year, the biggest of which is the disappearance of the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine. It will be replaced in the base Range Rover and the HSE with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6.

The new Rangie's aesthetics have changed to help it improve its overall Earth friendliness, and that's the reason given for the engine switch: following "the widespread industry trend to downsize engines due to GHG [greenhouse gasses] legislation which requires continuing efforts to improve emissions and fuel consumption." The V8 produced 375 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque, the supercharged V6 gets 340 hp and 332 lb-ft. That slows the 0-to-60 mile-per-hour time from 6.5 seconds to 7.1, but improves gas mileage by two miles per gallon across the board to 16 city, 22 highway and 18 combined and CO2 emissions drop by 22 percent. Stop/start will come standard on both the V6 and the supercharged 5.0-liter V8, that latter engine still standard fitment on the Supercharged and Autobiography trims.

Elsewhere on the velveteen exploration mobile, the price of the Adaptive Cruise Control will drop from $2,000 to $1,295. The Active Rear Locking Differential gets combined with the Tow Package; both are available separately on the Supercharged and Autobiography trims for $1,400 total right now, combined the two will cost $1,300 on the 2014 model. The LED signature lamps, an option with the Vision Assist package, will be standard across the range, and two new colors are added and one disappears. Click the link below to read the entire document, and you might want to rearrange your place on that waiting list if you're read something you like.
Range Rover dropping V8 base engine in favor of supercharged V6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Feb 2013 14:15:00 EST.
Had your eye on Land Rover's new all-singing, all-dancing 2013 Range Rover? You're not alone - and hopefully you were smart enough to already put down a deposit. The capability- and lux-laden sport utility vehicle began trickling into dealers in December, but is already "sold out for six months to a year," says Chris Marchand, executive vice president of operations at Jaguar Land Rover North America.

That's according to Automotive News, which notes that limited supply issues have made Land Rover shift all North American deliveries to the $88,545 HSE trim or higher instead of the $83,545 base model. The move should not only help dealer profits, it apparently better matches the buying patterns established by the outgoing model - shoppers of the L322 generation skipped out on the base spec and went right for costlier models with more luxury trappings.

It isn't immediately clear when Land Rover thinks it will be able to catch up to the Range Rover's order bank, but keeping the vehicle in high demand should assure higher transaction prices. As Land Rover is still ramping up its marketing efforts for their latest range topper, it's possible that wait lists could get even longer as more people find out about the new model.

Despite the shortage of vehicles, Automotive News says that Land Rover remains confident that its 2013 sales total will outpace last year's 43,664-unit total.
2013 Range Rover already on huge wait list originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Feb 2013 13:00:00 EST.

Andrew Polsinelli, Land Rover North America's head of product planning, told us this is what owners requested of the new, fourth-generation Range Rover: "Don't change it, just make it better." Superficially, the request appears to represent that species of conflicted, mashed-potato yearning that births other such entreaties as "I want it to be non-fat but still rich and full of flavor," and "I'd like more cashiers and better service at the 99-cent store."

Focus on the word "it" in the first part of that demand, though, and one can begin to find clarity. When they say "Don't change it," that isn't a command to leave everything untouched on the 42-year-old SUV franchise that can simultaneously rule the farm and the Bolivian highlands and a refugee camp and the vogue enclaves of any national capital. They mean don't change the 'Range Roverness' of it, the feeling that it's penthouse automotive luxury - a donked-out Rolls-Royce if you will, a Phantom on thirty-sixes but without the rapper/kingpin connotations. Beyond that comes the knowledge that if you want to get from Los Angeles to Miami in your Range Rover, you can take the straight shot over the I-10 freeway or a slight detour through the Canadian tundra. And it's still the only SUV extant that will have the driver looking for buttons with the icons for serfs or footmen upon arrival (because you can't be expected to have to do things yourself, can you?).

That feeling remains in the 2013 Range Rover. And the latest generation is better. So there's the prime directive accomplished. Furthermore, it is so capable that it's not wrong to call this the Super Star Destroyer of SUVs.

It does, however, look a little different.
Continue reading 2013 Land Rover Range Rover

2013 Land Rover Range Rover originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Feb 2013 11:57:00 EST.
As if the Range Rover Evoque didn't already stand out enough, Land Rover is adding a Sicilian Yellow Limited Edition model to make the stylish CUV even harder to miss. Debuting this week at the Brussels Motor Show, this new Evoque model will go on sale in May, and while we don't know which exact market it will be sold in, we know for sure it won't be coming to the US.

The new limited-edition model is available on the Evoque's three- and five-door body styles, and paint schemes are limited to either Sicilian Yellow with a Santorini Black roof and door mirrors or Santorini Black with a Sicilian Yellow roof and door mirrors. Surprisingly, the Evoque doesn't look that bad in yellow, but the reverse paint scheme looks very odd. The interior also gets plenty of yellow with an anodized accent running across the instrument panel and contrasting stitching throughout most of the leather-laden cabin.

This model also debuts the Evoque's new Black Design Pack, which will be available on all Evoque Dynamic models starting in April. The Black Design Pack will add darkened headlights and foglights, black Range Rover lettering on the hood, black 20-inch wheels, black painted accents on the front and rear fascias, clear-lensed taillights and a liftgate spoiler.

More information about this new Evoque model is posted in a press release after the jump.
Continue reading Limited Edition Range Rover Evoque blisters eyeballs

Limited Edition Range Rover Evoque blisters eyeballs originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Jan 2013 11:33:00 EST.
We see all sorts of publicity stunt road trips, but few seem as cool as spending 11 days driving almost 4,000 miles in a 2013 Range Rover Autobiography and sleeping each night in an equally plush Airstream trailer. This is exactly what Ben Samuelson, formerly of TVR, and his PR team did to show off the new Range Rover while driving it from England to Morocco and back.

Towing the 5,300-pound Airstream was as much to show off the towing abilities of the Range Rover as it was to provide luxurious sleeping accommodations, which Samuelson compared to a boutique hotel. One of the more interesting aspects of this story is Land Rover's claim that the most popular tow vehicle of choice by European Airstream owners is a Land Rover product.

The Range Rover Evoque was a bold new direction for Land Rover that proved successful, but if reports are to be believed, it is only the beginning of an onslaught of new products. According to a report from Autocar, the brand associated with both opulent motoring and rugged off-road capability is embarking on a massive lineup expansion, with the goal of producing 600,000 vehicles annually and 22 million vehicles by 2020.

In order to accomplish this, a flurry of new modes are planned, including the expansion of the Freelander (LR2) lineup and the unveiling of a new Defender family. The former will include five-seat and seven seat models, while the Defender will also roll out five-seat and seven-seat editions, but also a crew-cab pickup model. Consider our interest piqued.

The Evoque family will also grow, including an Evoque XL, Evoque convertible, and a "baby Range Rover" that would slot underneath the Range Rover Sport. This amonts to a goal of expanding the Land Rover lineup to 16 new vehicles.

Jaguar/Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth has claimed "40 new JLR product launches in the next five years," according to the report. To accomplish this, JLR is throwing 2 billion pounds a year behind this expansion. Roughly 1.8 billion pounds will go to a new Chinese production facility capable of producing 130,000 vehicles per year. The strategic location of the plant can feed the Chinese and Russian markets, which have voiced a demand for more specialized, limited edition models.

This all may seem ambitious, and perhaps even present an overlapping of models. However, if the automotive marketplace has taught us anything in the last decade, it is that there really is no such thing as too many CUVs.
Land Rover to offer 16 models by 2020 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Nov 2012 18:00:00 EST.
The redesigned 2013 Land Rover Range Rover made its debut back at the Paris Motor Show, and while there were plenty of great shots showing the iconic SUV in action, Land Rover has released some additional images of the new model playing nicely in Morocco with the original Range Rover. Seeing the two models side by side shows just how far the Range Rover has come, but at the same time how closely related the designs still are.

As a recap, the new Range Rover features extensive use of aluminum, helping to drop around 700 pounds of curb weight compared to the previous model. Upon introduction, it will be powered by a 5.0-liter V8 pumping out 375 horsepower paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, but we expect a sportier supercharged model to show up eventually, too. We will never doubt the off-road capabilities of this SUV, but the new photos show just how much the new Range Rover can take including some impressive water fording depths. The 2013 Range Rover will have a starting MSRP of $83,500 (*including destination) when it goes on sale in the US by the end of the year.

Until then, check out the photos Land Rover has released showing both the new and old Range Rovers.

Pics Aplenty: 2013 Range Rover in Morocco (with 1971 Range Rover) originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Nov 2012 19:32:00 EST.
Land Rover has reworked the option sheet for the 2013 Range Rover Evoque with a new base model and a lower entry price. Buyers on (more of) a budget can slide into the Evoque Pure, which lands at $41,995 and is only available in five-door configuration. That's a reduction of around $2,000 compared to the 2012 model (pictured).

The lower MSRP comes with an aluminum roof instead of the gorgeous panoramic laminated glass panel of higher trims, though it can be painted in a contrasting color. Even so, buyers can still look forward to a cabin swaddled in leather and synthetic suede. All trims now have the option of a Park Assist feature and designers have reworked the old grille to include a new black-field Land Rover logo.

Land Rover has also taken some time to update the Evoque's navigation system. Off Road Navigation is now standard on every model equipped with nav, and features info like topographic lines, latitude, longitude, elevation and waypoint functionality. All handy in the rare event your Evoque abandons the beaten path. Check out the full press blast below for more information.
Continue reading Range Rover Evoque gets new base model, lower starting price for 2013

Range Rover Evoque gets new base model, lower starting price for 2013 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 09:14:00 EST.
The Land Rover Range Rover gave a wide, laid-back grin to the Paris Motor Show. Only the fourth change in body style in 41 years, this one has finally been given some angles and curves and a bit of rake, still certifiably a Range Rover but there's more going on than we're used to. Luckily it has more cargo room so it can carry around the haul of commentary its looks have gathered, such as the polarizing headlight and taillights reminiscent of a Ford Explorer, the three-slat vent motif on the front doors and the actual and slightly fussy vents on the front bumper

Some standard and available features are Terrain Response 2, which can see them through any Hamptons horse-trail ruts, less switchgear so that one can focus on being seen, a 29-speaker and 1,700-watt sound system to drown out the other Earthlings, 22-inch wheels to better look down upon them, and an eight-speed transmission and massive weight drop so the help won't have to fill up as often and can be home sooner with the brioche.

Seeing it in person, there's no doubt that after spending the $83,500 needed to take one home, buyers will be rewarded with the Rangie's standard option of that feeling of royalty, of wearing a crest and purple ermine. Which is as it should be. You can check it out from all angles in the high-res gallery above.
2013 Land Rover Range Rover originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 30 Sep 2012 16:05:00 EST.
Land Rover has shared U.S. pricing information for the 2013 Range Rover. While the Brits may be forking over more than $110,000 for a Rangie, buyers stateside will need to come up with $83,500 (*including destination). A top-of-the-line Autobiography edition of the Range Rover will set you back $130,950. That's an increase of $3,250 versus the current base Range Rover, and a jump of $4,285 for the Autobiography trim.

So why the disparity in base price between the UK Range Rover and the one set for the Yanks? Well, the the price for a TDV6 Range in the UK is £71,295, which includes Britain's rather substantial Value Added Tax. Conversion rates put that figure at $114,140 U.S., so that could explain most of it. There may be differences in standard equipment, too.

The North American Range Rover, along with the UK version, will feature Land Rover's new Terrain Response 2 management system, as we've previously dived into. That, combined with the 700-pound diet should make for one capable luxury 'ute.

The 2013 Range Rover will be sold in 170 markets internationally and will hit U.S. showrooms later this winter. Check out the press release below for the new Range Rover's U.S. debut.
Continue reading 2013 Range Rover makes U.S. debut with $83,500* base price

2013 Range Rover makes U.S. debut with $83,500* base price originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 14:14:00 EST.
Now that you've seen the photos of and read our deep dive into the 2013 Range Rover, no doubt a few of you will want to know just how much lucre you'll need to put one in your five-car garage. The number you're looking for is £71,295 ($114,140 U.S., but that includes Britain's hefty VAT and other taxes) for the 3.0-litre Vogue TDV6 diesel on the lowest rung.

That is not even £1,300 more than the erstwhile base model, the 4.4-liter TDV8 Westminster. The 4.4-liter remains on the offer sheet but intermediate pricing hasn't been released yet, so when we can compare like with like we're sure the price gap will be larger. However, even though the power goes down on the TDV6 to 254 horsepower from 323 hp in the TDV8, with 900 fewer pounds to lug around the TDV6 in the 2013 Range is faster than the TDV8 in the previous body, and gas mileage is up by more than 20 percent. Neither of those diesels will be coming to the U.S.

The margin isn't so slim at the upper end, though. The asking price for the Range Rover Autobiography 5.0L Supercharged is £98,395 ($157,525 U.S.), a jump of £11,470 ($18,363 U.S.) over the outgoing model and perhaps a more accurate sign of just how much has gone into the new status symbol. You can read more about it in the press release below and check out two videos of the latest Range Rover in wet, dirty action.
Continue reading 2013 Range Rover to start over $110K in UK [w/video]

2013 Range Rover to start over $110K in UK [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 08:44:00 EST.
