Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG - red - at speed in a forest

Picking up a used luxury car is a great way to save some coin. Letting the previous owner take the fall on depreciation is a smart move, but it's worth remembering that high-end autos carry with them high-end maintenance and repair costs. Using Edmunds.com data, 24/7 Wall Street has compiled what it says are the 10 most expensive vehicles to own, and the list is populated by some not-so-surprising names. BMW and Mercedes-Benz soak up the lion's share of the offenders, though other manufactures make a showing as well. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG takes top honors as the most expensive of them all with a "true cost of ownership" of $245,469. That's in addition to the gullwing supercar's $210,875 MSRP.

The calculations not only factor in deprecation, but also things like fuel, maintenance and insurance costs.

All told, Mercedes-Benz models takes four of the 10 spots on the list. That's twice as many as BMW, and the rest are split between makes like Land Rover, Audi and Nissan. If that last one seems a bit out of place, keep in mind Nissan makes the mighty (and mighty complex) GT-R. Check out our gallery below for a full list of the biggest offenders.

Land Rover Range Rover spy shot

This isn't the first (or second, or third) time we've caught the next-generation Big Daddy Range Rover out testing, but this latest set of spy photos gives us our best look yet at some of the SUV's new exterior details. (Sidenote: We have to commend Jaguar Land Rover for having some of the coolest camouflage patterns in the world.)

As you might expect, the Range Rover's shape hasn't changed too much from the current generation, though we can clearly see a sleeker front fascia with headlamps that seem to incorporate new LED running lights, as well as a slightly sleeker roofline. But the big news for this next-generation vehicle is the huge reduction in weight that's supposedly on tap - reports have estimated that as much as 800 pounds have been shed from the SUV's body. This weight savings is largely due to an all-new aluminum platform, as well as widespread use of lightweight materials throughout the body.

Mum's the word on what's going to be found underhood, but we'd expect the usual range of eight-cylinder engines to be offered here in the United States. Murmurs of a hybrid powertrain have also been spinning 'round the rumormill, so don't rule out the possibility of some electric boost being on tap, as well. We love action movies as much as the next guy, but sometimes the car stunts just look too ridiculous. Like when a cop car goes airborne during a chase scene after rear-ending a parked car. Or how about when a vehicle flips end over end upon impact. That never happens, right?

Well it apparently does in Russia, where, thanks to seemingly everyone in the country having a dash cam, you can watch video of a Land Rover Freelander 2 driving over a manhole cover and going Bourne Ultimatum.

What caused the cover to blow the way it did is not evident, though it's interesting to note that in the aftermath (in the second video especially), you see that it's not a plain, flat manhole cover that comes to rest near the car. It's a cylindrical object with a square grate across the top. Lending credence to the whole thing not being a fake is that a second static security camera (or similar setup) pointed at the street also caught the whole episode.

2013 Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham

It's been the better part of a year since we first brought you reports that Victoria Beckham - who had then just signed on as a celebrity "creative director" for the Range Rover brand - was set to get her own special edition of the chic new Evoque. We didn't know quite what to make of the news then - much less when the British purveyor of luxury SUVs released a teaser just a few days ago - but now JLR has taken the wraps off its glamorous new special edition, and it's not nearly as gaudy as you might think.

As you can see, the second vehicle released by Jaguar Land Rover's new Engineered To Order division (alongside the new Jaguar XJ Ultimate) is characterized by matte black paint, which contrasts with the gloss black and rose-gold trim. The interior is finished in vintage-finish tan leather, with mohair floor mats and a microsuede headliner. It also comes with a four-piece set of fitted leather luggage, and a leather portfolio carrying the owner's manual and bearing Victoria Beckham's own signature.

In other words, it's suitably posh for a vehicle resulting from a collaboration between the Land Rover Design team and the pop star who made her name as Posh Spice. Only five examples out of the 200 planned for production will make it Stateside, with no word yet on pricing. We'll also be keeping an eye out for more images of the luxed-out, matte-finish Evoque when they surface, but in the meantime you can view the solitary pic released so far in high-resolution and delve into the full press release below.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque with Victoria Beckham video teaser

Land Rover is using the Beijing Motor Show to reveal a special edition Range Rover Evoque with Victoria Beckham - not "created with" or "by," just "with." It was announced almost a year ago, but Posh Becks has been busy doing the kinds of things keep a woman called Posh busy.

LR has made a vid to support the cause, but it stretches the definition of "teaser" since it's more like 17 seconds of Fashion TV meets Tron in monochrome, bracketed by titles. If you look really closely, you might even see the Evoque in it. Scroll down to check it out.

German aftermarket tuner Loder1899 tells us Horus was an Egyptian god, and Wikipedia says he was usually depicted as a falcon or a man with a falcon's head. While we're not seeing much that's bird-like in this customized Range Rover Evoque, a new front fascia with integrated fender flares and a similar treatment for the other end means the Evoque no longer looks like the baby of the Land Rover clan. The vehicle in the photos is also fitted with optional gigantic 11x23-inch wheels shod with 315/35R23 Michelins and a lowered suspension. Without them, the conversion runs €3,032 - or about $4,000, including German taxes. Awful or awesome? Let us know what you think in the comments.

As is tradition, Day Two of the 2012 New York Auto Show kicked off with the annual World Car of the Year awards. Global entries competed for honors in four different categories, and from the initial list of 34 contenders, the final four were selected this morning.

The big winner was the 2012 Volkswagen Up! subcompact, which takes home the honor of World Car of the Year, beating out its other finalists, the BMW 3 Series and Porsche 911. We've had a chance to drive VW's tiny runabout and, while it would be hard for the automaker to justify offering something this small in the United States (right now), we'd gladly welcome its tossable city dynamics and efficiency here on our shores. With a small bump in power, it could certainly show the Fiat 500 who's boss.

But the Up! wasn't the only car praised in New York this morning. The new 991-series Porsche 911 was named World Performance Car of the Year, besting other nominees like the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 and McLaren MP4-12C. Stiff competition, for sure, but you just can't match the 911's razor-sharp precision, not to mention that this new 991 model is easily the best 911 yet.

Moving on to a different sort of performance, the Mercedes-Benz S250 CDI BlueEfficiency took top honors for its eco-performance, securing the World Green Car of the Year award. In this segment, the other two finalists were the Ford Focus Electric and Peugeot 3008 Hybrid greenlings.

Lastly, the WCOY jury selected the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque for the World Car Design of the Year - not really a surprise, seeing as how the baby Range Rover has been praised for its styling ever since the day it launched. Our condolences to the Citroën DS5 and Volkswagen Up! - you guys just aren't pretty enough.

Still think drinking and driving don't mix? Well you're right. They don't. But every once in a while something comes along to make us rethink that rift. Like that set of radiator decanters, those Alfa Romeo and Lancia wines, Krug's 1979 Rolls-Royce panel wagon or really any racing car bearing the Martini livery. Or this special one-off Range Rover Evoque.

Crafted by the British luxury SUV brand in collaboration with Italian customizers Aznom, this unique Evoque features a wine-red paintjob with bronze trim and a mate black roof, with an interior bathed in cream leather. It was made for the champagne house Bollinger for the 2012 Vinitaly wine festival, and will accompany a Luxury Lounge motorhome across Europe to promote Bollinger and its fine bubblies. Land Rover Discovery Camel Trophy truck - front three-quarter view

Land Rover has a big anniversary to celebrate at this year's New York Auto Show. The company is marking its 25th year in the States, and it's busting out a few historical models for display at the show for the occasion. Those include a 1987 Range Rover, a 1993 Land Rover 110, a 1995 Range Rover Classic and a 1994 Camel Trophy Discovery, among others. These bruisers won't just be parked under the expo center lights, either. Land Rover has set up a special off-road course on site to demonstrate the vehicles' capabilities.

Though the brand debuted in 1948, Land Rover didn't officially make its way across the Atlantic until 1987. Since then, Americans have bought over 575,000 of the upwardly mobile sport utilities. Land Rover is largely credited with inciting the luxury SUV craze with its plush Range Rover line. When the leather-trimmed four-wheel drives arrived in the U.S. in '87, their $30,850 MSRP put it head and shoulders above the competition... at least in terms of cost. Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept

Now that the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet has graced the streets of America with its absurdity and ugliness, this Range Rover Evoque convertible somehow doesn't seem so bad. Don't get us wrong, we still don't want one, and honestly, we hope this is one concept that never sees the light of production; but the more we look at it, the more we don't hate it as much as we probably should.

"We believe that the Evoque lends itself beautifully to the idea of a convertible," says Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern. Our apologies, sir, but we respectfully disagree.

So, it's a three-door Evoque without a roof. That's really all there is to say, though we'd absolutely need to see how it looks with the folding soft top in place. After all, the sleek roofline of the standard Evoque is one of our favorite design elements, and as much as we'd like to squint and make believe that the convertible still looks dashing with its cloth hat on, we're skeptical.

Obviously, Range Rover wants folks to see its new concept car before it ships off to Switzerland next month. Reading University student Simon Truscott snapped the Range Rover Evoque Cabriolet in a London alley, apparently catching it in the midst of a photo/video shoot. We'll admit that this isn't the ragtop Evoque's best angle. Without a greenhouse to offset its full-figured bottom, the topless off-roader looks pretty chunky.

Range Rover says it'll monitor audience reaction to the concept after it's formally revealed at the Geneva Motor Show (as surely as it's tracking the feedback people are posting already). Their words: "The concept is being shown to gauge reaction and to assess the potential for what could be another unique product from Land Rover."

If we had to place bets, we'd wager that a production version will eventually appear in showrooms. You'll find a press release with Range Rover's official statement after the jump.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible

While we're still waiting for official details, we have received confirmation from the blokes at Land Rover that the Range Rover Evoque Convertible you see above is the real deal, and it will debut at next month's 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

At this time, Land Rover is calling the roofless wonder a concept, though a production model seems likely at some point in the near future. Based on the three-door Evoque, the convertible model will offer seating for four and be billed as the world's first premium convertible SUV (sorry, Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet!).

Top Gear fans were some of the first to hear about the droptop Evoque when presenter Jeremy Clarkson used a pair of scissors to cut the roof off an Evoque during a news segment this week, but it took a while before the crafty Internet got around to leaking real images. See for yourself in the image gallery above, and stay tuned for official information as we draw ever closer to the Evoque Convertible's official debut.

Ten years wouldn't seem like much of an anniversary for an automaker, or even a sub-brand. But we're not talking about a make here, we're talking about one model. That's right: The current Range Rover has been on the market for a decade, which is a rather long life-cycle for any automobile, but Jaguar Land Rover isn't the least bit embarrassed. In fact, it's celebrating the anniversary with a series of special edition models.

Picking up where the Vogue model leaves off, the Westminster Edition features a cabin decked out in leather trim, thick carpeting and piano lacquer veneers, with illuminated treadplates, polished pedals, a 19-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system with Dual View display and heated and cooled front seats. JLR's 4.4-liter turbodiesel V8 pulls all four 20-inch, 10-spoke wheels through an eight-speed automatic.

Meanwhile the Autobiography edition is available with the same engine, or with the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 with six-speed automatic. The Range Rover Design Pack distinguishes the exterior, while the Range Rover Seat Style Pack makes the cabin an even more opulent place to be with the reclining rear seats and moveable front passenger seat you'd expect to find in a limousine.

Range Rover Spy Shots

Our spy photographers have snagged a few fresh images of the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover as engineers put the SUV through its paces during a little winter testing. The prototype looks identical to the bruiser we say playing around on the Nürburgring last year. Details were scarce then and they remain so now, though this batch of photos show the big Rover's interior for the first time. From the looks of things, the cabin doesn't seem to have received much in the way of an update, though there's no way to tell if this particular tester is fitted with a full production-spec interior.

The next-generation Range Rover is expected to bow with a gently sloping roofline and a more aggressively raked rear window. Word has it that the vehicle will ride on the same underpinnings as the Jaguar XJ, though the luxury utility will likely undergo a serious diet before it debuts. Land Rover has made it clear that reduced mass is a top priority as governments around the world continue to push more aggressive fuel economy and emissions targets.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the moment you've all been waiting for... the Car of the Year awards to rule all Car of the Year awards... the definitive selection of the very best the industry has to offer has been decided. Well, we don't know about all that, but the votes have been tabulated and the assembled jurists (including our own Chris Paukert) have selected the 2012 North American Car and Truck of the Year.

The finalists were whittled down from a list of 30 candidates to include the Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra and Volkswagen Passat (on the car side of the equation) and the BMW X3, Honda CR-V and Range Rover Evoque (on the truck side, despite them all being car-based crossovers). And after (what we hope was) careful consideration, the panelists have selected the Elantra and the Evoque as the overall winners.

The awards will undoubtedly sit proudly atop the mantles at both Hyundai and Jaguar/Land Rover's headquarters, but will surely be received with particular jubilation by Land Rover, which has won the award for the first time in this, its largest market.

2012 Land Rover Evoque

Autocar reports that Land Rover may be working to flesh out its lineup with a new, larger version of the Range Rover Evoque. The publication claims executives are interested in building a model to split the difference between the current Evoque and Range Rover Sport models as the latter vehicle moves farther up market in the coming years.

The report explains that the new middle child will wear styling borrowed from its smaller sibling, though the chassis will likely be stretched by just under a full foot, with half of the extra span landing in the wheelbase. The rest of the length is said to go to the rear overhang so that the vehicle can accommodate both a third row and more cargo area.

If realized, the vehicle will be powered by a range of four-cylinder options, though a hybrid variant is also expected to rear its head at some point in the future as well. So, when will we see this grandaddy Evoque? Autocar says the vehicle won't land until 2015 at the earliest.

Land Rover has been cranking out the luxurious yet still-capable Range Rover since 1970, and over the last 41 years, the iconic vehicle has seen its design dramatically altered just three times. We're not expecting the next generation Range Rover to rock the boat stylistically, but we think you should be ready for a fresh look in the very near future.

Our spy photographers captured the 2013 Range Rover in a rather unlikely place. Seen roaming around the 'Ring, this camo-clad beast shows off little in the way of future design language. We wouldn't be surprised, however, if touches of the all-new Evoque find their way up the family tree. Hopefully, the high-speed testing continues for a few weeks and those camouflage layers begin to peel off so we can see exactly what's going on underneath.

At 171.9 inches long, 83.7 inches wide and 64.4 inches high, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is the most diminutive Range Rover ever. Cradling a four-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower between its front fenders, it is also the least powerful Range Rover. With MagneRide magnetorheological suspension, an 825-watt Meridien sound system, a body that contains almost 100 pounds of recycled and renewable materials that helps get the baby all-wheel-drive to 28 miles per gallon on the highway, it is the most advanced Range Rover ever.

The question is not, is the Evoque a good vehicle? Spoiler Alert: the answer is yes. The question is, is it, actually, a Range Rover?

Land Rover may be busy promoting its stylish new urban-crossover, the Evoque, but the automaker hasn't forgotten about its most iconic vehicle of all, the Range Rover. Just last week, we reported that the next-generation Range Rover would take styling cues from the smaller Evoque, and this latest set of spy photos gives us a glimpse as to what we can expect when the all-new Land Rover debuts.

Look very closely and you'll notice a more sloping roofline, combined with a more raked rear window. As of now, that's about all we can tell on the styling front, so we'll have to wait until the camouflage is peeled back to see the final shape. (Nice 8-bit, low-resolution cam, Land Rover.)

Rumors suggest that the next-gen Range Rover will wide on a modified version of the Jaguar XJ platform, enhanced - obviously - for off-road prowess. Land Rover is also looking to lighten things up a bit, and the new Range Rover will likely use more aluminum in the chassis and body than ever before.

Powertrain options will likely carry over with only minor upgrades, though two hybrid versions are rumored to be in the works, including a diesel hybrid. We'll know more when the Range Rover officially launches in late 2012 or early 2013.
