The last in line is not nearly the least, as evidenced by the 2014 Range Rover Sport, which is being unveiled to what we're sure will be the delight of New York audiences. The middle child in the Land Rover Range Rover line-up, our initial impression is that, in terms of exterior design, it might have succumbed to the anonymity of middle-child-dom, losing the strength of its character for having to wear a couple of hand-me-downs from its bigger Range Rover sibling and a ton of hand-me-ups from its smaller Evoque sibling.

In front and in back it looks like a larger Evoque, with the Range Rover's tapering blade lights and LED day-time running lights. It shall be known by its twin-bar thematic elements such as the two-bar grille, the strakes in the side vents and the two vents on the hood. It's also got a faster windscreen angle and is more aerodynamic throughout, returning a coefficient of drag of just 0.34 for a vehicle that is 2.5 inches longer than before. The wheelbase has also been stretched by a huge seven inches.

Still, it's a comprehensive rework. It's new aluminum structure deletes 800 pounds of heft, and it weighs about 100 pounds less than a similarly equipped Range Rover. As with bigger bro, the Sport gets either the 340-horsepower 3.0-liter supercharged V6 or the 510-horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that are fitted with stop/start tech. Both run through a ZF eight-speed transmission, and power is put to the ground through a single-speed Torsen differential or an optional two-speed transfer case with low range.

Commanding that increased off-road capability is the Terrain Response 2 system and its new Automatic setting. It has more articulation to play with, the brand new aluminum suspension worth 21.2 degrees of articulation - and the emergency off-road high setting gets higher while the access height goes even lower.

The interior wears more soft-touch materials; features a smaller, thicker steering wheel; more sculpting and padding in the front seats and individual seating for rear occupants. With all that extra space between the wheels, the back-seaters can get inside more easily, and the "Ta da!" feature in the new Sport is a power-operated third row option for "occasional use."

Prices will begin at $63,495 for the Range Rover Sport SE and its 3.0-liter supercharged V6, then go to $68,495 for the HSE, $79,995 for the Supercharged that puts the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 underhood, and $93,295 for the Autobiography. All of those prices include the $895 destination charge.

Even with all that, we haven't begun to tell you about its new features, so have a seat and a drink while you enjoy the exhaustive press release below.
Less than 24 hours after Land Rover released its first video teaser of the upcoming 2014 Range Rover Sport ahead of its New York Auto Show debut, it appears someone has already spilled the beans. The image you see here comes from the VMax 200 Facebook page, and it clearly shows what looks to be the new Sport hanging out in a garage.

Design-wise, the new Sport appears to borrow heavily from the smaller Evoque crossover while still having plenty of cues that tie it to the all-new Big Daddy Range Rover. The two-tier grille mimics the three-tier one of the larger Range Rover, and the headlamp and taillamp clusters follow similar design cues (though the rear lights are more squared off than vertical), but parts of the front fascia are clearly reminiscent of the pretty little Evoque, as are the rocker panel flares that remind of the three-door model. Unlike its costlier Range Rover sibling, there are no vertical faux side vents embossed in the door skins - instead, there's a small fender vent above the front wheels with a pair of matte silver strakes to give directional thrust.

Land Rover has not yet released any details about the 2014 Range Rover Sport, only saying that it will be the company's "fastest, most responsive and most agile vehicle to date." Stay tuned for the official unveiling on March 26.
Are you the 2014 Range Rover Sport? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Mar 2013 12:30:00 EST.
Land Rover is gearing up for this year's New York Auto Show with a teaser for the company's new Range Rover Sport. The brief clip doesn't reveal much beyond a fender and a quick glimpse at a headlamp (which picks up the flared look of the new Range Rover), but we do get to put an ear on the machine's exhaust note for the first time. Trust us when we tell you you'll want to get friendly with your volume knob on this one. Details are scarce as can be at the moment, but it certainly sounds as if there are eight furious cylinders burbling away in this thing.

The last time we saw the Range Rover Sport in development, it was prancing around in the snow near the Arctic Circle. That peek didn't give us much to go on beyond some suggestion towards a significantly revised lower fascia, though we have heard Land Rover is working on whipping up a seven-passenger version of the Range Rover Sport in addition to the standard five-passenger model. Since previous iterations of the RRS have derived their underpinnings from the seven-passenger LR4, that would seem to be a pretty easy thing to engineer. While you're waiting for the Big Apple reveal, you can check out the new teaser video below.

Continue reading Land Rover releases first Range Rover Sport teaser footage

Land Rover releases first Range Rover Sport teaser footage originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Mar 2013 15:45:00 EST.
Well, this makes sense. Considering the fact that New York is the single largest market for the Range Rover Sport, it's only fitting that Land Rover has chosen the upcoming New York Auto Show as the venue to debut the all-new 2014 model.

According to Land Rover, the new Range Rover Sport will be unveiled on March 26, the night before the show kicks off. At that time, the new luxury SUV will be driven through Manhattan in what the automaker calls a "groundbreaking live drive." The whole shebang will be broadcast to audiences around the world via the new Range Rover Sport's microsite.

Land Rover says the 2014 Range Rover Sport will be the company's "fastest, most responsive and most agile vehicle to date," and while the teaser image above doesn't give away too much (click above for a larger view), we fully expect the new SUV to incorporate design elements from both the Big Daddy Range Rover and the smaller Evoque crossover.

We'll have the full brace of information ready for you on the 26th, so stay tuned. For now, have a look below to scan Land Rover's offic ial press blast, and head over to the microsite for more information.
Continue reading Land Rover to unveil next Range Rover Sport in New York

Land Rover to unveil next Range Rover Sport in New York originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Mar 2013 08:44:00 EST.
Truth be told, I have always considered the Range Rover Sport to be something of a poseur in the Land Rover lineup, but there's one big reason this SUV is so popular in chic cities like New York and Miami - it has the boxy, instantly recognizable looks of a classic Range Rover but with a sportier demeanor. In fact, if sister marque Jaguar ever does get around to building an SUV (as has been rumored for years), I have the feeling it will have the ride quality, performance and handling similar to the Range Rover Sport, albeit with a greater on-road emphasis.

Coming in at just under $80,000, the 2013 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is no easy financial pill to swallow, but even now, with its replacement waiting just off-stage, it's just hard to say anything that bad about an SUV that is equal parts off-road, luxury and performance. Land Rover has kept the Sport fresh with a mess of small tweaks (new wheel and interior color options, etc.), and we thought spending a week with this generation would be a fine sendoff before the all-new 2014 model arrives.

Driving Notes

First and foremost, the performance of the Range Rover Sport Supercharged is a result of the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 under the hood cranking out 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. That's enough power to get this almost-three-ton SUV to accelerate from 0-60 in just 5.9 seconds, which is not too far off the pace from a Porsche Cayenne S. Moving that kind of mass takes a lot of fuel, and the engine isn't afraid to suck down the octane - I averaged just over 11 mpg for the week in mostly city driving.

My biggest disappointment with this Range Rover was how flat and uninspiring the exhaust note sounded (especially knowing how great the supercharged Jags sound using the same engine).

It's very unlikely you're going to see a Range Rover Sport tackling any serious trails, but that's not because it can't. While most Range Rover Sport owners likely consider off-roading to consist of splashing through big puddles in NYC or kicking up sand blown onto Miami Beach's Ocean Drive, the Sport is no less capable off-road than its brethren thanks to its height-adjustable suspension and Terrain Response System. There's even an off-road screen that lets the driver know the articulation of each wheel, whether the differentials are locked and the angle of the front tires.

Terrain Response takes the guesswork out of off-road driving by providing five simple modes that are all accessible at the push of a button (yes, the days of locking hubs and manual transfer cases are long gone for most modern off-roaders). Purists might take issue with this system - or similar ones used by Jeep and Ford - but it's hard to argue with the simplicity and user-friendliness that Terrain Response provides. Most of the Terrain Response settings are there to make off-roading easier, but the Range Rover Sport also comes with a Dynamic mode that tightens up the steering, throttle and transmission for a sportier feel.

Most of the time while driving the Sport, every bit of its weight and size is felt -especially when it comes to fuel economy - but I was surprised on numerous occasions by its small turning radius. At a local parking lot where some smaller sedans require a three-point maneuver for turning around, the Range Rover Sport managed the deed in one fluid motion. Another time while testing the off-road capabilities in loose sand, the tight turning radius again came in handy as I was able to confidently make some sharp turns without slowing down or stopping - very important when driving in loose terrain such as sand or snow.

Maybe it's the fact that I now live in Florida and have no need for a heated windshield, but my biggest pet peeve about current Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles is the tiny wires that run through the windshield for the heating elements. They are just small enough not to obstruct the driver's view but are also noticeable enough to be annoyingly distracting - especially at night when bright headlights are approaching. It's been years since I've had to worry about clearing thick ice from a windshield, so I'm not doubting this is a useful tool for owners in the North, but these thin, squiggly lines can sometimes be a distraction. Perhaps it should be an option.

Speaking of distractions, one of my favorites on the Range Rover Sport comes courtesy of the $1,200 Vision Assist Package, which adds a five-camera view around the vehicle. In theory, this is an excellent tool for off-road driving as it allows you to see nearby obstacles without actually having to get out of the car, but for some reason, the cameras operate at any speed, making for a pretty tempting distraction while driving.

An interesting part of the Range Rover Sport's design is that its instrument panel is actually positioned above the hood giving a commanding view of the road. Even with the seat in its lowest setting, I still felt like I was sitting up way too high. But this, along with Rover's relatively narrow window pillars, actually provided for excellent visibility while driving, a remnant of Land Rover's obsession with off-roading, where it's important to know exactly what immediately surrounds your vehicle.

In most of these pictures, I photographed this tester's air suspension in Access suspension setting to give it a lowered look, but its main purpose is to making ingress and egress easier. For optimal off-roading, the air suspension can also be raised (as seen above), giving it ample ground clearance. The vehicle automatically reverts to normal ride height when speed tops 30 miles per hour.

With the massively redesigned Range Rover out of the way, Land Rover is now working on getting its next-generation Range Rover Sport ready for the public eye. Wearing far less camouflage than the last time we saw this SUV, we're starting to get a better idea of what the Range Rover's brasher relative will look like.

Up front, it looks like the Sport will be getting a more pointed nose than the new Range Rover, and we can also see that the lower fascia has a sportier appearance and LED running lights similar to the smaller Evoque. Our spy shooters also added that this prototype appears to be wider and lower than the current model.

Since this vehicle was caught testing near the Arctic Circle, Land Rover benefited from a bit of extra camouflage courtesy of a thick layer of snow covering the rear, so we still don't have a good idea about what the back of the new generation will look like. Speaking of the rear end, there is still no confirmation as to whether the Range Rover Sport will be getting a seven-passenger version, so we'll likely have to wait for more information about this new Land Rover until closer to the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall where we expect it to debut.
Range Rover Sport spotted cold-weather testing originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Feb 2013 14:29:00 EST.
One of the vehicles that will expand the Land Rover lineup over the next seven years is a seven-seat Range Rover Sport. The LR4/Discovery is currently the only Land Rover to offer a seven-seat package, even though it's not exactly roomy in the third tier. The present Range Rover Sport sits on the same platform as the LR4, but being two inches shorter overall and having a wheelbase 5.6 inches shorter, it provides only just enough room for second-row passengers.

Based on a report in Auto Express, that will change upon the introduction of the 2014 Range Rover Sport that uses the same platform as the recently introduced 2014 Range Rover. The new big brother is eight inches longer overall and has a wheelbase seven inches longer than the current Range Rover Sport. That will provide the coming Sport, obviously longer than it is now yet certain to be shorter in length and wheelbase than the Range Rover, a fair dose of room to play with to accommodate another two occupants.

Even so, it won't be the Taj Mahal back there. Reports have declared the coming SUV to be lower than it is now and have a more pronounced slope to the backlight, the Auto Express article adding that it will have a sloping roof reminiscent of the Evoque. In spite of the increased dimensions and people-hauling capacity, a focus on sporting performance, along with the aluminum platform and an aluminum body, should help keep things properly motivating.
Next-generation Range Rover Sport to get seven-seat option originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 08:29:00 EST.
The Range Rover Evoque was a bold new direction for Land Rover that proved successful, but if reports are to be believed, it is only the beginning of an onslaught of new products. According to a report from Autocar, the brand associated with both opulent motoring and rugged off-road capability is embarking on a massive lineup expansion, with the goal of producing 600,000 vehicles annually and 22 million vehicles by 2020.

In order to accomplish this, a flurry of new modes are planned, including the expansion of the Freelander (LR2) lineup and the unveiling of a new Defender family. The former will include five-seat and seven seat models, while the Defender will also roll out five-seat and seven-seat editions, but also a crew-cab pickup model. Consider our interest piqued.

The Evoque family will also grow, including an Evoque XL, Evoque convertible, and a "baby Range Rover" that would slot underneath the Range Rover Sport. This amonts to a goal of expanding the Land Rover lineup to 16 new vehicles.

Jaguar/Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth has claimed "40 new JLR product launches in the next five years," according to the report. To accomplish this, JLR is throwing 2 billion pounds a year behind this expansion. Roughly 1.8 billion pounds will go to a new Chinese production facility capable of producing 130,000 vehicles per year. The strategic location of the plant can feed the Chinese and Russian markets, which have voiced a demand for more specialized, limited edition models.

This all may seem ambitious, and perhaps even present an overlapping of models. However, if the automotive marketplace has taught us anything in the last decade, it is that there really is no such thing as too many CUVs.
Land Rover to offer 16 models by 2020 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Nov 2012 18:00:00 EST.
Well, now. This is different. The minds at Overfinch have turned their attention to the Land Rover stable and have cooked up a couple of, um, unique versions of both the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. We can certainly get behind the notion of the GTS-X, a slammed Sport with 575 horsepower at the driver's beck and call. While the front fascia is a little garish, the bright orange paint and colossal split-spoke rollers are just demented enough to tickle our fancy. Of course, for $230,100, it better.

Then there's the <strike>purple people eater</strike> Evoque. Overfinch saddled the interior with white leather, bolted on a set of 22-inch wheels and dipped the whole concoction in some very purple paint. We can't say that's a direction we would have gone, but we can also safely assume we aren't Overfinch's target demographic, either. Both creations will be at the Salon Prive London starting September 5. Check out the full press release below.
Continue reading Overfinch does terrible things to Range Rover Sport, Evoque

Overfinch does terrible things to Range Rover Sport, Evoque originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 12 Aug 2012 14:02:00 EST.
Land Rover is continuing its recent trend of sporting some of the most interesting camouflage in the automotive world. The machine bearing this mashup of fuzzy geometric shapes with an undeniable Volvo flair is none other than the 2014 Range Rover Sport, the smaller and sportier brother of the top-drawer Range Rover that we've seen out and about a bunch of times already.

As you can clearly see, there will be large air intakes in the front bumper, seemingly to feed the atmosphere into whatever forced-induction powerplant Land Rover chooses to wedge under the bonnet - we'd guess a couple of V8 options in the States and a turbodiesel or two in Europe, but we wouldn't be terribly surprised to see some downsized mills thrown in for good measure.

We're expecting the next Range Rover Sport to shed a good bit of weight from the current model, and rumor has it that the machine will be lower and wider, with a more pronounced sloping rear backlight to better differentiate the Sport from its more off-road-oriented sibling.
Next Range Rover Sport shot at close range originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Jul 2012 15:59:00 EST.
Land Rover is busily working on creating lighter versions of the its offerings in an attempt to head looming fuel economy regulations off at the pass. That includes the Range Rover Sport. Details are skimpy as to exactly what kind of weight savings we can expect from the next-generation vehicle when it debuts, but it's clear that Land Rover is already hard at work on a few prototypes. Our spy photographers managed to catch a mule out and about on public streets wearing sparse camouflage and plenty of sheetmetal from the current SUV.

Next year will see the Range Rover Sport equipped with a new eight-speed automatic transmission manufactured by the gearbox gurus at ZF paired to a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 engine in the UK. The transmission isn't expected to be mated with the company's gasoline V8 offerings, however. Stay tuned for more information on the next-generation Range Rover Sport as it becomes available.
Land Rover prepping new Range Rover Sport originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 13:31:00 EST.
A new model year brings about new features to all Land Rover vehicles, and 2012 is no different. Most notably, both the Range Rover Sport and LR4 will now be offered with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, paired with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine. The V8 mills, however, still employ the services of a six-speed cogswapper.

That eight-gear transmission may be big news for the diesel-gulping British SUVs, but here in the United States - where we won't likely get a diesel-powered Land Rover - we're quite excited for the interior upgrades, including a brand new seven-inch touchscreen with Dual View. This setup allows the driver to view information such as navigational cues, while passengers can enjoy TV or a movie. Thanks to the wireless WhiteFire headphones, the driver also won't have to endure the same terrible Backyardigans song over and over (and over and over). Though if one happened to enjoy the work of Uniqua, Pablo, Tyrone, Tasha and Austin, then the 17-speaker Harmon Kardon stereo will deliver their tones to your ears.

This is all just the tip of the iceberg regarding the new features of a vehicle that probably has a Terrain Response setting for scaling icebergs. Both the 2012 Range Rover Sport and 2012 LR4 have hefty press releases for you to read after the jump.
Continue reading 2012 Range Rover Sport, LR4 get eight-speed automatic among other updates

2012 Range Rover Sport, LR4 get eight-speed automatic among other updates originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Jul 2011 10:31:00 EST.
Most would view a sport-ute like the Range Rover Sport as luxurious enough already, but for those who disagree, Land Rover has debuted a new special edition.

Called the Luxury edition, it slots in between the HSE and Autobiography editions. It's distinguished by such special touches as a sun roof, heated steering wheel, contrast-stitched leather trim and a Harman/Kardon audio system. It's available in Europe exclusively with the 245-horsepower, 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6, and can be ordered in white, black or bronze, offset by black trim and 20-inch wheels.

Pricing reportedly comes in at a princely €110,000 - equivalent to about $150k. Have a closer look in the gallery below.

Land Rover has debuted its Range_e, a plug-in diesel hybrid, at the Geneva Motor Show. According to Land Rover, the Range_e can go up to 20 miles in full-electric mode, and return 85 mpg and 88 grams of C02 per kilometer. Not too shabby for an SUV.

Beyond the impressive electric capabilities, the Range_e is being touted as the world's first 4WD plug-in hybrid diesel. As you can plainly see, the Range_e is based on the Range Rover Sport and is powered by Range Rover's 3.0-liter 240-horsepower TDV6 and a 69 kW electric motor. The Range_e can be recharged from a standard household power supply in less than four hours, so plan ahead if the battery's dead and you have errands to run, otherwise you'll be stuck with the diesel mill.

Land Rover isn't saying whether it considers the Range_e to be a concept or a production-intent model, but it is saying that the electrified SUV is part of its $1.3 billion 2008 plan to reduce carbon emissions by a quarter by 2012. Check out the official press release after the jump.

Land Rover is gearing up for the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and it's bringing new four models to show off, one of which shows the automaker is thinking a bit more green. The Land Rover Range_e plug-in diesel hybrid will be on display. Power for the electrified Range Rover Sport comes courtesy of a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as an electric motor. The Range_e's driving range is said to be nearly 700 miles and it can drive approximately 20 miles on electric power alone, which should be good enough to get the SUV into the heart of London.

Also getting the bright light auto show treatment are the luxurious Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition, Evoque in two and four-door guise and the 2011 Discovery/LR4 Landmark Edition. The Autobiography Ultimate is described as the most luxurious Land Rover ever produced and features yacht-inspired teak flooring and Apple iPad tablets for the rear passengers. The Evoque will be featured in a handful of trims that offer unique customization options for consumers. Finally, the limited-edition Landmark LR4 will be available in either a Black or a White theme with upscale interiors and unique color treatments.
Jaguar is looking to expand on its existing lineup of vehicles. Currently, Leaping Cat buyers can choose from variants on the two-door XK, four-door XF and flagship XJ sedan. A two-door, four-passenger XJ-based coupe is reportedly in the works and will take aim at the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class. Also apparently being discussed is a shooting-brake based on the XF and an entry-level crossover based on the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.

According to Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director for Jaguar, crossovers will be a definite part of the automaker's future. Besides the proposed entry-level Evoque-based CUV, Jaguar is considering another crossover based on the Range Rover Sport.

Range Rover Sport RS500 by Project Kahn and Cosworth - Click above for high-res image gallery

There's a grand tradition to enormously powerful and torquey diesel sport-utes. Most of them come from the Volkswagen group - like the Touareg V10 or the Audi Q7 V12 TDI - but this, as you might have guessed, is no VW. It's a Range Rover, uut one that's been thoroughly worked over.

The modifications have been carried out through the joint efforts of Project Kahn and Cosworth - two British tuners that have been working together for the past couple of years. Their latest product started life as the thoroughly capable and luxurious Range Rover Sport with the 4.4-liter V8 diesel. With 313 horsepower, the diesel Rover is hardly a slouch, but Cosworth has taken it a step further (and then some) by squeezing out a whopping 500 horsepower.

To go with the massive upgrade in output, Kahn has given the Range Rover an extensive cosmetic update both inside and out, with new bumpers from and rear, side skirts, 22-inch wheels and an interior decked out in billet aluminum and perforated & quilted leather trim. Check it out in the high-res image gallery below.

As luxury sport-utes go, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport is one heck of a machine. But if your neighborhood or office parking lot is already jam-packed with 'em, you may want to set yours apart as something unique. Something that really smolders. The Vesuvius edition from Project Kahn ought to do the trick.

The Vesuvius edition was previously issued on the original Range Rover Sport, but now that LR has updated the its muscle-bound SUV, so has Kahn. The Vesuvius edition features a full color-keyed aero package, an interior decked out in quilted and perforated leather, plus custom 22-inch wheels that have a surprisingly 'factory' look to them. The orange-and-black motif is finished off with special touches like a carbon-fiber umbrella and a custom watch made to match the vehicle. Check it out in the gallery below.
