Challenger SE Rallye - Click above for high-res image gallery

Attention ponycar people: the V6-powered Challenger SE is now available with a pretty slick new dress-up package. The Challenger SE Rallye takes the base car and adds stripes, an R/T-style chrome fuel door, black-accented 18-inch wheels, and a rear decklid spoiler. The Rallye also introduces the 5-speed AutoStick to the six-cylinder Challengers. The 4-speed slushbox is history, and the 5-speed is reportedly geared for more energetic launches. Think of it as a package akin to the killer-looking R/T Classic, only for the entry-level car. Starting price, according to the Pentastar, is $26,490 and it can be ordered immediately. Ridiculously long PR follows the jump.

UPDATE: We did post on the Challenger SE Rallye earlier today, but the focus of that post was mainly the addition of the 5-speed AutoStick, nor did we have the full gallery of high-res images or official press release at that this post contains.

Gallery: 2009 Dodge Challenger SE Rallye

[Source: Chrysler]

Continue reading Retrolicious: Chrysler unveils 2009 Dodge Challenger SE Rallye

Retrolicious: Chrysler unveils 2009 Dodge Challenger SE Rallye originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 30 Mar 2009 13:26:00 EST.

We all have our embarrassing moments. Most, however, aren't quite as public as Petter Solberg's mishap last week at the Bettega Memorial Rallysprint in Bologna, Italy. The 2003 WRC champion was taking some parade laps and waving to the crowd when he decided it was a good idea to get on the roof of his car. He managed the task with relative ease, but quickly found that getting back into the car posed much more of a problem. With Subaru pulling out of WRC in 2009, let's hope this isn't our last memory of Solberg piloting a rally car.
The World Rally Championship has lots of problems. Many of the manufacturers have dropped out, and the action just isn't compelling as it once was, relegating top-tier rallying to obscurity. We've got our own ideas on how it might be fixed, but more on that later. Italian tire maker Pirelli, meanwhile, which supplies the control rubber to the series, has a proposal of their own.

While other motorsport disciplines like formula, stock car and even motorbike racing have feeder series, as in steps along a continuous ladder that starts with the most accessible and tops out at the pinnacle, rallying, for the most part, does not. A junior class of rallying would allow aspiring drivers to showcase their talents and top-tier teams, on the other hand, to scout new drivers (and co-pilots, for that matter). Pirelli, for its part, is trying to start up such a program with the Pirelli Star Driver initiative, which will pit a field of five drivers against each other in identical cars - possibly Group N-spec Subaru Imprezas or Ford Fiesta STs - on six rounds of next season's WRC calendar. But more support would be needed to turn Pirelli's junior driver program into a full-on WRC2, and Pirelli hopes that parties behind the existing WRC will ante up in an effort to save the sport.

With the 2008 Lisbon-Dakar Rally confirmed to proceed, a star-studded roster of drivers is shaping up for what promises to be an exciting event spanning two continents over the course of two weeks.

Robby Gordon will be returning for the fourth time to fight for America's glory in, what else... a Hummer (pictured above). The NASCAR star will be competing against a host of rally champions, including double WRC champ and 2007 FIA Cross Country Cup winner Carlos Sainz (VW Touareg), and Monte Carlo rally winner Bruno Saby who will be driving the late Colin McRae's BMW. Two former F1 drivers, Ukyo Katayama and Tiago Monteiro, will be also competing, along with Vanina Ickx, daughter of famed grand prix and Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx.

All these drivers will be aiming to oust Mitsubishi, which has dominated the dunes and won the rally every year since 2001. Mitsubishi will be fielding no less than four Pajero/Montero this year in the event, which is set to depart from Lisbon, Portugal, on January 5 and finish in Dakar, Senegal on January 20.
Following meetings between the head of security for the Lisbon-Dakar Rally and government authorities in Mauritania, race organizers, undeterred by recent terrorist attacks in the country, have announced that the event will go on as planned.

Last week, terrorists in Mauritania shot and killed four French tourists and four Mauritanian soldiers. Reports indicated that the attacks were perpetrated by Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the infamous terrorist network's North African wing, praying on fears that the militants were expanding southwards from their previous activities in Morocco and Algeria.

Last year's rally had two stages canceled due to security concerns regarding Algerian rebels. This year's rally is set to depart from Lisbon, Portugal, on January 5, passing through Mauritania on January 11 en route to the finish line in Dakar, Senegal, on January 20, covering a total of 9000km (5600 miles).

Mitsubishi Lancer? Subaru Impreza? Sure, they're the modern-era rally-car stalwarts, but long before they rose to prominence, Audi simply dominated the world rally circuit with the then-new and innovative Quattro all-wheel-drive system with which the German carmaker has by now become synonymous.

The video after the jump features some of the best footage of Audi Quattros sliding through dirt corners and jumping gravel crests as driver heels-and-toes, co-pilot rifles through navigational notes, and spectators scurry out of the way. Note the legendary Walter Röhrl's steely-eyed determination and deft footwork in some of the in-car segments.

The "Machinehead" soundtrack by Bush is more fitting than some of the euro-trash techno we're forced to endure in other such videos, but it's still no substitute for unadulterated revs and exhaust notes. Snapped under disguise while undergoing testing in California, you can begin to see the shape the new Impreza will take. As we reported earlier, the next Impreza's front facia will take yet another new styling direction, after previous facelifts were met with less than enthusiastic response.

The hatchback seen here is expected to hit the market before its conventional sedan counterpart. Reports suggest that the new Impreza will feature a 330-hp 2.5-liter flat-four engine; while others anticipate the possible addition of a high-performance hybrid powerplant.

Like previous Imprezas, the upcoming model will earn is credibility on the rally circuit and will likely prove popular with the street tuning crowd, while facing stiff competition from the upcoming version of its arch-nemesis, the Mitsubishi Evo X.

The show car looks were dropped for the production version, which is currently available here in the US and will start appearing in European showrooms soon. The UK, however, is a different matter entirely.

In the UK, the only Jeep Compass that will be available is a right-hand-drive limited-production version of the concept car. The 2007 Jeep Compass Rallye will be available only with the Freedom Drive 1 all-wheel drive system and the aforementioned appearance package. Black wheels, aero-style bumpers and side skirts, and extra foglamps give the Compass Rallye its unique look.

The decision to make only the Rallye edition available was the result of UK market research that showed that the bespoilered Compass would be a better seller than the standard vehicle. To illustrate the limited availability of the Compass Rallye, Jeep stated that the UK division's other new arrival, Patriot, will outsell the Compass Rally 10:1. Pricing won't be announced until later.

Both the Patriot and Compass, as you know by now, are built on the same platform as the Dodge Caliber, and as such, they share powerplants with the little Dodge. Like the Euro Caliber, the Compass Rallye and Patriot will be available with either the 2.4L gasoline 4-cylinder or the VW-sourced 2.0 diesel. Looking at the aeroed-out Compass Rallye, we can't help but wonder what it'd be like to have it in the US ... with AWD and the Caliber SRT4 mill. Now that'd be something.

(Press release after the jump)

[Source: DaimlerChrysler UK]
Continue reading Jeep Compass Rallye for the UK

Jeep Compass Rallye for the UK originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Sep 2006 18:02:00 EST.
