Opel plans return to motorsport

With a financial crisis ravaging the European automotive industry, many automakers have tightened budgets, and motorsports programs have, in many cases, been among the first things to go. That's the case at Ford and Mini, but it's the opposite at Opel, which announced its return to motorsports in the form of spec series for two very fun-looking hatchbacks.

The first racer is the Opel Adam Cup, which will participate in the ADAC Rally Masters competition for the Opel Rally Cup Trophy. The series will closely match FIA R2 specifications, and will offer special coaching for younger drivers that place well in the "junior rally" system. There will also be cash prizes.

If hosing the dirt off your car after every race isn't your thing, there's the Astra OPC Cup. Featuring Opel Astra OPC, the highlight of the season will be a 24-hour endurance race at the Nürburgring. As with the Adam Cup, there will be cash prizes.

There's plenty of history here. Opel's rally exploits included a European Championship title in 1974, and again in 1979. This success was followed by campaigns in DTM in the 1990's, culminating in a constructor championship in 1998. Opel also found overall victory in the 24-hour endurance race at the Nürburgring in 2003. To read up more on Opel's and its new racecars, check out the press release below.

Rally crash gets exciting after car comes to complete stop

Racing of any variety is inherently dangerous, and rally racing may very well be the most dangerous flavor of all motorsports. Niceties like track runoff and Armco barriers are replaced with sturdy oak trees, water hazards and some nice old lady's front porch. Hell, just getting out of the car post-off can be hazardous to your health.

Just ask the BRAKIM Racing team. Driver and co-driver suffered a brief miscommunication last weekend during Stage 7 of Rally West Virginia, which was enough to put the team's Subaru down a quick embankment.

After the party came to a stop, the co-driver decided to do his best to extricate himself from the car by climbing up and out of the passenger window. That's when things began to get really hairy. Ladies and gentlemen, please keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times. Amazingly enough, no one was harmed. Check out the video below to see the craziness.

Watch 10 years of WRC trials, tribulations and triumphs

Sebastien Loeb has won the World Rally Championship - with the same team - for eight consecutive years, and this year, he's so far ahead more than halfway through the season that he'd have to sit out two rallies to let the second-placed drive overtake him. Yet few complain about the predictability of the WRC, with complaints mostly about vehicle regulations and not Loeb's suffocating consistency.

It's videos like the one below that explain why. Stage 1 Technology and its timing and tracking gear has been involved with the WRC for ten years, and has put together a fine compilation video with a decade of wins, losses, jokes, slides, highlights and high jumps. Scroll down to check it out.

Rally car plows into crowd in France, kills two [w/video]

A rally race in France ended in a tragedy this weekend, when a driver missed his turn and hit a crowd of people. Two deaths were reported, with 17 injured including a race marshall and several children, according to the BBC.

Four of the injuries were deemed "serious," and the scope of the accident overwhelmed rescue services, according to the report. The driver was also injured, and is in the custody of the police, who have launched an investigation, according to iafrica.com.

The Pays des Maures race was being held in Southern France, with the accident occurring on Saturday afternoon near Toulon, according to the BBC.

Watch Evgeny Novikov crash spectacularly out of the 2012 Rally Mexico

Rally racing, like virtually every other form of motorsport in the world, is a dangerous activity. As much as we love watching a talented driver negotiate a tricky off-road race course with skill and luck, crashing is no doubt part of the experience as well. And crashes happen rather often in the world of rallying.

During the 2012 Rally Mexico, which took place from March 8-11, 2012, there were two drivers who started the race but were forced to retire after crashing out. One of those was Evgeny Novikov, who ended his race in spectacular fashion after the roof vent of his Ford Fiesta RS WRC blew away, causing the cabin to fill with dust and debris. As the commentators point out, he was truly driving blind, at least until he veered off course and crashed.

When we say Noviko crashed, what we really mean is that he flipped, rolled and generally demolished his Fiesta rally car with a vengeance before ending up on the roof. See for yourself by watching the video below.

Valentino Rossi hopes for future in rally racing [UPDATE: w/video]

Valentino Rossi, certainly the greatest motorcycle racer of our generation, has no concrete plans to leave MotoGP. In fact, after an extremely disappointing first season with Ducati in 2011, we'd wager he'll be sticking around for at least a few more years to prove he's still got what it takes to win at the highest level when competing on competitive machinery.

But, as we've heard in the past, Rossi would love nothing more than to "retire" by taking a break from two-wheeled competition and settling into something with four. And while we know The Doctor has proven quite adept at piloting a Ferrari Formula One machine, the likeable Italian apparently prefers to rally. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Rossi said:

I'm happy, it was one of my best rallies, even if I had won it the past. Getting ahead of Loeb in two specials really turned me on... I'll do a few more years in MotoGP, then I'd race in rallies: these machines are really fun to drive because they have less electronics.

A future career in rally racing wouldn't be a stretch for Rossi - the motorcycle racer finished in second place in a Ford Fiesta RS WRC, a mere 24 seconds behind eight-time world champion Sebastien Loeb's Citroen DS3.

We can never get enough of Ken Block's Gymkhana, and we're pretty sure that many of you feel the same way. Lucky for us, Block and Codemasters have the launch of DiRT 3 to look forward to, making a new drift video a no-brainer.

Watch Block as he hops behind the wheel of the Ford Focus Rally car at London's Battersea Power Station, the same place he took a bikini model from Zoo Magazine for a ride. As always, Block traverses some keenly placed obstacles whilst drifting and doing donuts all the way. As a special sendoff to DiRT 3, Block also drifts through a series of stacked DiRT 3 boxes, which we hope aren't filled with copies of the $59 game.

Hit the jump to watch the slide-master do his thing. This may not be Block's best work, but it isn't often that we actually enjoy being bombarded with advertising.

A day in the life of Travis Pastrana is probably a bit more exciting than our own 24-hour standard stretch of day-in/day-out minutia. We don't race rally cars, do multiple back-flips on a dirt bike or try our hand at NASCAR. Interestingly enough, it's that last one that seems to be giving Pastrana some trouble. He's a man not used to failing, but so far his Pastrana-Waltrip Toyota racecar has an unhealthy attraction to the wall.

Travis was behind the wheel at the K&N Pro Series West NASCAR race when he crashed multiple times. The car went on the trailer and Pastrana headed for a waiting jet, which whisked him off to Salem, Missouri. There, Pastrana hopped into the more familiar territory of his Subaru rally car. Competing in the Rally America National Championship, things were looking good until Pastrana's Subie decided to dance with the tree-lined surroundings. Mother nature won but driver and co-driver, thankfully, walked away.

It certainly makes for an interesting 24 hours. We're glad that it was only cars that were hurt, and we're also glad the cameras were rolling. Click past the jump to spend 24 hours in Pastrana's Alpinestar shoes.

Helmut Deimel has been involved in the sport of rallying since the Seventies. During that time he has participated and interacted with some of the all-time greatest drivers to ever click into a racing harness. Deimel's involvment has also allowed him to cultivate a vast archive that spans 50 years of rallying history. He's put it all together into one amazing 90-minute video called Evolution of the Drifting Angle (Half a Century Sideways).

Black-and-white footage gives way to color just as rear-wheel-drive yields to all-wheel-drive. Deimel's film traces the history of a sport where drivers often find themselves driving through the side window. It's a rather long video to watch over the internet, but it's worth sitting through every second. You know you already wasted plenty of time on the Internet so click past the jump, let the video load and spend the next hour-and-a-half watching an excellent video showing the evolution of one of the most exciting forms of motorsports.

For us, there are few things better than vintage racing. While we love to see classic metal from every corner of the globe all dolled up on a concourse lawn, the truth is that cars are meant to be driven. La Carrera Panamericana is the gold standard of vintage racing venues, with everything from favorites like BMW 2002s, Datsun 510s, Porsche 911s, Chevrolet Corvette Stingrays and early Ford Mustangs to charisma magnets like Hudsons and Mercedes-Benz SL300 racers tackling the undulating Mexican tarmac of the Panamerican Highway. It's road rallying at its finest.

And while making it out to far-flung corners of Mexico may not be on everyone's travel agenda, we can all get a taste of what it's like to be a spectator via the wonder of the internet. The purveyors of procrastination over at Bring a Trailer have been so kind as to post a series of high-definition videos from this year's rally, complete with Porsche sideways action. Rally driver James Girvan killed in competition [w/video]

James "Jimmy" Girvan, former Scottish Rally Champion, has died as a result of a crash at the this past weekend's Colin McRae Forest Stages Rally in Scotland. According to the BBC News, Girvan's Subaru Impreza collided with some boulders then was thrown into the surrounding trees. Mike Ramsay, Girvan's co-driver, had to be cut free from the vehicle but he escaped with a minor arm injury. Jimmy Girvan, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene. After the tragic accident, race organizers shut down the event, which itself serves as a memorial to legendary driver Colin McRae who was killed in a helicopter accident in 2007.

We have video footage of the rally cars heading out from the first stage, including Girvan's red Subaru Impreza. It was the last stage he finished at the event before his crash in Stage 2. You can watch the video after the jump, with Girvan and Ramsay pulling up to the starting line around the 1:20 mark. Our deepest sympathies go out to Girvan's family, friends and colleagues. Rally fans often stand at a corner or in the middle of a straight away, sometimes for hours, just to get a glimpse of their favorite car. If you're lucky, you get a prime spot at a sharp turn or abrupt elevation that leads to airborne cars. Lucky for us, the Internets exist so that the best moments of these races are captured for our enjoyment.

Over eight minutes of high-revving Porsche GT3 rally cars await you after the jump. Just about every shot is a keeper and the intense (and vivid) screams of the hopped up boxer engines is more than enough reason to spend a few minutes of your time watching the footage after the jump. Besides, you'll want to remember what it is to actually drive a car before heading out of the office and into rush-hour gridlock, right?

We love racing. There are tons of different variations of fast vehicles in motion, and all provide a vast array of stimulation to our eyes and ears. Formula One, touring car, WRC, ALMS, bikes... all compelling in their own way and all are pretty damned fast. But as we've come to realize over the years, that which is fast also tends to look pretty cool when slowed to a crawl.

We've come to enjoy YouTube maven Mattzel for his slow-motion manipulation of all manners of racing footage, and we're happy to say that the high-resolution mix master has come strong with another compilation. This time there is more F1, more rally, more bikes, more crashes and more slow. Hit the jump to watch the video. We're thinking it's well worth three minutes of your time.

There are a lot of great racing choices out there for motorsports fans, but few offer up the excitement and showmanship of rally driving. Not many drivers seem to be having as much fun as Ken Block, as his YouTube videos and uncanny drifting prowess have fast become must see TV. For his latest video goodness, Block showed off his rallying chops at Team O'Neal's Rally School in New Hampshire along with fellow rally pro Chris Atkinson. To make the video interesting, the rally vets didn't hit the dirt in a state-of-the-art AWD Subaru. Instead, Block and Atkinson tried their luck in a vintage rear-drive 1978 Euro Ford Escort. Block actually owns the 31 year old vehicle and will be racing it in select events.

The super 'Scort may look like a Daytona USA stock car, but it has plenty of modern hardware beneath its boxy exterior. Power comes courtesy of a sweet sounding 2.4-liter, four-cylinder Millington engine that kicks out a respectable 280 horsepower paired with a WRC-style six-speed sequential gearbox.

WRC switching to S2000-spec car for 2010 season

For whom does the cost-cutter's bell toll? It tolls for Formula 1... and for the World Rally Championship. The FIA has announced that from 2010 the WRC will use Super 2000-spec cars, instead of the current championship's Group N racers. As with the FIA's moves in F1 to standardize components in order to help teams save money, the S2000 cars all have third-party-supplied gearboxes and drivetrains, use 2.0-liter engines with 8,500 rpm rev limits, and are prohibited from being excessively modified (if you have some time, check out the FIA-mandated S2000 specs), among other things. Should manufacturers wish to sell their S2000 cars to privateer teams they can charge no more than €168,000. Five time WRC champion Sebastien Loeb has spoken out against an S2000 WRC, saying he won't be interested in rallying if the 2010 regs actually take effect. The Group N cars that drivers like Loeb currently pilot will be relegated to the P-WRC come 2010. We'll find out then if Sebastien Loeb goes with them.

Lexus returning to Targa Newfoundland with GS 450h

At last year's Targa Newfoundland, driver Mark Lachapelle brought his Lexus GS 450h -- yeah, that's a hybrid -- home 18th overall, and sixth in his division. This year he'll return to the 2,200-kilometer race which runs over six days through the central and eastern part of the island.

The 339 hp Lexus is the only one of last year's hybrid contestants to return, and is kitted for duty with just a safety cage, performance exhaust and upgraded shock absorbers. Slotted into the modern division, this year's race will pit the Japanese hybrid against big bore Americana: among other competitors, Ralph Gilles and Karen Wagner are scheduled to drive a Dodge Challenger SRT in the same class.

Volvo has been making automobiles since April 14, 1927, and while most of us know Volvo for its safe and sometimes fun-to-drive vehicles, the Swedish automaker's history is of course more complicated than that. For instance, Volvo earned its reputation as a safe automaker before it sold a single car by getting in a head-to-head accident with an American car, which totaled the domestic while only scratching the Volvo. Volvo also featured the first standard three-point safety belt and was the first automaker to have a catalytic converter. Hit the jump to catch up on Volvology. It's a very solid nine-minute Volvo history course, even if it fails to mention current owner Ford all-together.

DiRT pulls ads featuring Colin McRae

With the rally racing world still mourning the death of 1995 WRC champion Colin McRae, game maker Codemasters has decided to pull advertising featuring the deceased driver. The very successful game, Colin McRae: DiRT, used McRae as its spokesman in Europe, but not in the States. Management at Codemasters came to the decision to pull the ads after consulting McRae's family, which is the decent thing to do.

McRae's death was a crushing blow to all who knew him, and the news that three others, including Colin's son, also passed only made things worse. Codemasters did the obvious and right thing in pulling the ads, but we hope McRae's name stays on the cover of the game as tribute to his vast contributions to rally racing.

Finally some shots of the R4 rally car designed by Colin McRae himself for a single-make rally series have surfaced. The car debuted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend, but shots from that event have been surprisingly hard to come by. We've already told you about the R4 at length here, but to reiterate it's got a 340-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that's mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox. In that form it can hit 60 mph in five seconds, although more powerful versions of the engine are already in the works. McRae designed the £130,000 rally car especially for a single-make rally race series of which we know very little about at this time.
