During a DTM practice session in Zandvoort, Holland last weekend there was an accident in the pit lane that left four men injured. Ralf Schumacher had finished pitting his Mercedes-Benz racer and the pit crew in front of his had wheeled out and untied their air line, and a man in the adjacent crew was holding the air line on his shoulder.

As Schumacher left his pits, his rear wing caught the air line in the adjacent pit, where it looped down from its elevated rod. Between the hose itself and the whipping metal jack at the end of it, it sent four men to the ground and then to the hospital. All of the injuries were minor, thankfully. Three of the men have been released, one is still under observation. You can watch the incident in the video below.
Continue reading Watch this Mercedes-Benz DTM pit crew's dramatic air line accident

Watch this Mercedes-Benz DTM pit crew's dramatic air line accident originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Aug 2012 12:46:00 EST.
Back in the day, before Formula One drivers started trying their hand at NASCAR and the World Rally Championship - we're looking at you, Kimi - there was really just one address for retired grand prix pilots: DTM. The German racing series is king of all touring car championships, and has drawn such notables as Mika Hakkinen, Jean Alesi, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, JJ Lehto, David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher to its ranks. While BMW is preparing to take on its arch-rivals in the series soon enough, it's Mercedes-Benz that draws the big talents. And this year looks to be no exception.

Both Ralf and DC will be back behind the wheel of the C-Class AMG- the most decorated car in the series' history - for this year's championship. And while Paul di Resta - Mercedes' reigning champion - has moved the other way up to F1 (driving for Force India this season), David and Ralf won't be the only talents hoisting the Silver Star in DTM this season.

They'll be joined by former DTM champ and perennial McLaren test driver Gary Paffett (who has more wins to his name than anyone else in the series), Canadian driver Bruno Spengler (runner-up in 2006 and 2007), emerging talents Jamie Green and Maro Engel, and newcomers Renger van der Zande and Christian Vietoris. Susie Stoddart returns as well for her sixth season in the series, joining a long line of female drivers in DTM that has included Vanina Ickx (daughter of grand prix and Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx) and England's Katherine Legge.

Last season, Mercedes managed to win nine out of eleven races and seize all three top slots in the standings by season's end to tower over the competition. Will they be able to continue the domination this year? Only time will tell, but for now you can follow the jump for the full press release, view the full roster in the gallery below, and look over the Paffett's latest DTM-spec C-Class in the pair of fresh galleries we've assembled for your viewing pleasure below.

Stefan GP brokers a deal with Toyota Racing - Click above for high-res image gallery

Some people just won't take no for an answer. That sense of unbridled optimism could stand to serve an F1 team well, only Stefan GP isn't an F1 team. Yet. But they hope to be, and they're not taking no for an answer.

Late last year after Toyota departed from the series, the Serbian racing team headed by Zoran Stefanovic (pictured above at Toyota's headquarters in Cologne, Germany) brokered a deal with the Japanese automaker to pick up Toyota's aborted 2010 program and run with it as an independent. Stefan applied for a slot on the grid, but their bid was rejected. Now they're banking on one of the teams that was accepted - Campos, USF1 or (less likely) Virgin or Lotus - failing to make it to the opening round in Bahrain next month.

Sounds ambitious? Definitely, but not without merit. Bernie Ecclestone is backing Stefan GP's effort, and they're slated to unveil their own car, powered by their own engine (both rebranded from Toyota's program), and send it to the test session in Portugal later this month. Toyota is providing support, and Stefan has recruited a team of engineers - including several former McLaren operatives implicated in the Spygate and Liegate scandals - and former Midland/Spyker/Force India director Colin Kolles.

Word has it the team has also already lined up two experienced drivers backed by Toyota: Kazuki Nakajima and - get this - Ralf Schumacher. The younger Schumi expressed interest in returning to F1 alongside his more successful brother, and may just get his chance if another team misses theirs.

That's about where the similarities end. After an 11-year career with Williams, Jordan, and Toyota, Ralf retired in 2007 and ended up in the DTM series. He was a good driver and had a decent car early in his Williams tenure, but he simply didn't have the edge. He ended up with fewer race wins, six, than his brother did World Championships.

Now that Michael has returned to the circus, it looks like Ralf wants his turn under the Big Top again. Ralf said, "I know that my reputation suffered during my time at Toyota but I left that behind me. I know what I can do and I feel ready to do it again." Having turned down a race seat with one of the new teams, other rumors suggest that he's talking to Toro Rosso, where he would replace Jaime Alguersuari and partner Sebastien Buemi. Toro Rosso and Renault - and Sauber, depending - are essentially the only teams who have openings and a chance of giving Ralf a car he can do something with.

[Source: GP Update | Image: Alex Grimm/Bongarts/Getty]

Is the other Schumacher pondering a F1 comeback too? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 31 Dec 2009 09:01:00 EST.
People hold all sorts of unsubstantiated opinions. That's how we know there must be some people out there somewhere who still think that Ralf Schumacher is as talented as his brother. Those people were shown otherwise this past Sunday when the junior Schumi made his race debut in DTM, the German touring car series.

In the DTM season opener at Hockenheim, Ralf came in fourteenth place, well behind returning champion Mattias Ekstrom's new Audi A4 racer and that of team-mate Timo Scheider, completing a one-two finish for Ingolstadt. Ralf-boosters can blame the unfamiliarity of the C-Class race car which he was driving, but the track itself should have been familiar territory for the flunked-out former F1 driver. Compare that with his brother Michael who's been burning rubber and taking names on motorcycles altogether and it becomes all that much clearer who wears the racing overalls in the Schumacher family.

Ralf Schumaker, who's been racing for Toyota since 2005, will leave the F1 team at the end of this season. Saying that he's looking for a "new challenge" the younger half of the Germanic duo still plans on racing the wheels off his F1 whip for the last two races of the season.

There's no word on what the other Schu will be up to in the future, but he plans to make an announcement at the season-ender Brazilian Grand Prix later this month.

[Source: AFP]
Schumacher to leave Toyota at end of season originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 02 Oct 2007 18:56:00 EST. Rain started in just the second lap of the race and it had to be restarted by the fourth lap due to dangerous conditions. By the time the race restarted the rain had stopped and the track dried up quickly.

Fernando Alonso managed to take the top spot on a day where it seemed that anyone could win, but even he suffered a hitch during the closing laps as he tried to overtake Ferrari's Felipe Massa, who was in first place. Massa's front wheel grazed the side of Alonso's McLaren and this led to a heated argument between the two post-race.

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton was one of the drivers who slid off the track in the beginning, but he was given a lifeline when his car was lifted by crane back onto the track. A poor decision to switch to dry tires too early after the rain had stopped saw him spin out again. This left him out of contention of a podium finish, and at the end the rookie came at in 9th place.

The major disappointment was pole sitter Kimi Raikkonen being forced to retire because of mechanical problems with his Ferrari. This allowed the competent Mark Webber to cruise into the third spot to gain his first podium finish at Red Bull racing. Another disappointment were the BMW boys, with sixth placed Nick Heidfeld hitting the side of team-mate Robert Kubica and then doing the same again with Ralf Schumacher.
Drivers get wet at Nurburgring F1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jul 2007 20:47:00 EST.
