In a lawsuit filed in New York federal court, Mercedes-Benz Manhattan is charged with firing two employees after they complained about racist comments at the dealership.

Burnell Guyton and Andre Grammer, both African American, claim they found racist graffiti several times on bathroom stalls used only by employees. The two former employees say scratched into the stall wall was a stick figure hanging from a noose with Guyton's name below it, sexual drawings and "racially derogatory statements" according to Automotive News.

After they reported the offending graffiti, the two say they were fired almost immediately.

"When I first got there, I heard rumors of what certain people might say about an African-American running fixed operations. But it was just hearsay," Guyton tells AN. "Around the second year, when the writing started to show up, then it really hit home when you can read it on the wall."

The flagship Manhattan dealership is the only location owned and operated by Mercedes-Benz USA itself. Dealership management addressed the lawsuit in a statement: "We pride ourselves in providing an inclusive and supportive environment at Mercedes-Benz Manhattan. This lawsuit was originated by an employee who was terminated for cause and another one who voluntarily resigned without cause or provocation."
Flagship Mercedes-Benz NY dealership in hot water over racism lawsuit originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 14:01:00 EST.

Another month, another nationality insulted by the Top Gear presenters. James May, Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson have hopped into hot water with the Mexican government over comments that the trio made on a recent show. While discussing Mexico's Mastretta MXT sports car, Hammond said:

"Mexican cars are just going to be lazy, feckless, flatulent, overweight, leaning against a fence asleep looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat."

To make matters worse, Clarkson joked that the BBC wouldn't receive any complaints from the Mexican ambassador because he would likely be asleep. He was not.

The ambassador reportedly sent a letter to the BBC saying that the presenters had used vulgar and bigoted language to describe the people of his country and that the remarks were both xenophobic and humiliating. So far, the BBC hasn't commented on the situation. Thanks for the tips, everyone!

The other day I came across "Before the Thunder Rolls: Devotions for NASCAR Fans", a Christian prayer book written by a former NASCAR chaplain. It brought to light for me the degree to which stock car racing and Southern Baptist Christianity intersect. Drivers of Catholic background like Juan Pablo Montoya, Jacques Villeneuve and Dario Franchitti may be making inroads into the sport, but that's of little consolation to Jon Denning.

The budding Jewish racing driver from New Jersey says he's encountered a surprising degree of antisemitism during his climb up the NASCAR ladder. The 20-year-old driver, currently on a visit to Israel, races in the lower-level Whelen All-American Series. He has won seven races in his career and was ranked among the top 500 aspiring stock car drivers before his sponsorship ran dry. Over the course of his experience so far, Denning has described an alarming degree of racism and bigotry in NASCAR, and was even told by colleagues that if he accepted Jesus he'd have better luck on the racetrack. Ouch. Although NASCAR has a diversity program in place, Denning has been refused three times, having been told the program is only for women, Hispanics and African-Americans.

Imus appeared on the Rev. Al Sharpton's radio show on Monday to apologize, and yesterday appeared on the NBC Today show with Matt Lauer, neither of which has helped to quell calls for his resignation or firing.

He'll begin a two-week suspension levied by his employer, CBS, this Monday, though whether or not big name advertisers like GM will return after a fortnight is unclear. GM joins American Express, Sprint, Staples, Proctor & Gamble Co., TD Ameritrade and Bigelow Tea in suspending or dropping altogether an association with Imus and his radio show.

UPDATE: After viewing a report on the Imus controversy on ABC's World News Tonight, we noticed that Ford Motor Company is also a sponsor of Imus' radio show, though to our knownledge has not decided to suspend its advertising.

[Source: Bloomberg]
GM suspends advertising on Imus show originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Apr 2007 18:25:00 EST. We're not quite sure what the goal of this was, but you'll have to excuse us if wedon't believe that they were simply expecting a friendly and accommodating environment. Fortunately forNASCAR, motorsports, and tolerant people everwhere, no incidents were reported.

NASCAR has since fired back at the network, stating that the actions of the Dateline crew were"outrageous" and that the network should be "ashamed." NBC is in the final year of an agreement toair a portion of NASCAR's events, and presumably this incident could be brought up during contract negotiations.

While Dateline has done many fine reports in the past, the program is arguably best known to auto enthusiasts asthe organization that used pyrotechnics in 1993 to stage fires in an effort to demonstrate safetyproblems with side-saddle fuel tanks used on GM full-size trucks.

A television advertisement for Land Rover's Discovery 3 (read: "LR3" in colonial English) has the Britishupscale SUV purveyor in hot water. Seventy-one viewers have filed complaints with the UK's Advertising StandardsAuthority for racist undertones vis-à-vis Inuit culture.

In the ad in question, an Disco pulls up to a sled-mushing Inuit. The sledder is distracted by the Rover, only tofall off his mount after running into a snowdrift. The Eskimo then runs off after his sledge, whose dogs have pulled itoff into the distance.

Each of the 71 individuals filing grievances against the Green Oval have cited it for being 'racist' and maligningInuit culture. Sixty also registered complaints over concern that Rover was harming the environment. In response, theUK's notoriously strict ASA has sloughed off the complaints, saying that it doesn't consider the ad racist ordenigrating.

(More after the jump!)
