Last year, the heiress to BMW's controversial controlling Quandt family fortune was blackmailed by Helg Sgarbi, a conman who seduced her into a two month affair and subsequently threatened to distribute video footage of their encounters to the public if she didn't hand over a payment of some 50 million Euros. Klatten refused and instead went to the police, resulting in a six-year jail sentence for Sgarbi. Germany's wealthiest woman - a married mother of three - endured the embarrassment in the pursuit of justice and a refusal to acquiesce, but that wasn't the end of it, as Bloomberg is reporting that another set of fraudsters has attempted a copycat performance.

Apparently, a group of three men contacted Klatten claiming to have the tapes and demanded she fork over 800,000 euros (about $1.13 million USD) in a BMW X5 or they'd release the tapes to the public. Evidently, the three men failed to learn about Klatten's determination from Sgarbi's mistakes and they, too, were arrested. Police reportedly got the drop on the blackmailers as they argued over who would drive the X5. It remains unclear, however, if the three extortionists even had possession of any such tapes.

[Source: Bloomberg | Image: Thomas Lohnes/AFP/Getty]
BMW heiress Susanne Klatten reportedly blackmailed again in sex-tape scandal encore originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Jul 2009 09:00:00 EST. The Quandt family, which owns controlling interest in BMW, was outed in a recent documentary outlining the family's wartime activities that included close ties with Adolf Hitler and the use of slave labor during the Holocaust to make batteries and munitions for the Nazis.

According to the reports, Klatten, now married with three children, met a man in a bar with whom she entered into an affair. With the aid of an accomplice, the man secretly filmed their encounters and tried to extort some $51 million from Klatten to keep the matter quiet. The accused blackmailer, Helg Sgarbi, has reportedly done the same with other wealthy German women, but in this instance has claimed motives stemming from his Jewish grandfather's subjugation in the Quandt's factories during the Holocaust. Klatten approached state prosecutors when the ransom demands grew, and Sgarbi is now being held in police custody.

The result of five years of research into the Quandt family's wartime activities, The Silence of the Quandt Family asserts that Afa, the family's battery company that supplied specialized power cells and munitions to the Third Reich, employed slave labor provided by the Nazis. Documents unearthed as part of the research show that the company appallingly estimated that approximately 80 of its forced laborers would die each month at its factories. The film included testimonies from survivors who attested to the subhuman working and living conditions, as well as from former Nuremberg war-crimes prosecutors who asserted that, based on the evidence previously hidden by the Quandts and now revealed, the family would have been convicted of war crimes.

The Quandts, the documentary asserted, had close ties to high Nazi party officials. Adolf Hitler himself acted as witness to the second marriage ceremony of family patriach Gunther Quandt's first wife Magda to Nazi propoganda mastermind Joseph Goebbels, and the infamous couple raised Gunther's son Harald. The Quandts, according to the research, used the wealth amassed from the suffering of victims of the Nazi regime fifteen years after the war to buy BMW, and continues to hold 47% stake in the automaking conglomorate.

Even in the face of the publicly revealed evidence, the Quandts continue to refute any wrongdoing during the wartime period, have evaded justice and refused to contribute to restitution programs. They have, however, finally pledged to open the family records to independent historians for examination. While BMW itself, like other German companies, has acknowledged its role in the Nazi war machine, the Quandt family that owns it continues to deny any culpability.
