After salivating over the Audi RS6 Avant last night, we're happy to see yet another RS-branded Audi here on the show floor at the Geneva Motor Show. Meet the RS Q3, Audi's first ever high-performance crossover, showing what's possible when the Ingolstadt automaker brings its best sporting bits to its smallest CUV.

Powering the RS Q3 is Audi's 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine - the same one found in sweetie-darlings like the TT RS and RS3. Output is rated at 310 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque, sent to all four wheels via the automaker's seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission. Weighing in at just over 3,800 pounds, the RS Q3 is indeed a porky little pig, but no matter - that forced-induction fire will propel the small crossover to 62 miles per hour in five and a half seconds. And that's with launch control, too.

The RS Q3 certainly looks the part of a proper sporty Audi, with exaggerated air vents and bulgy, aggressive bits all around. Honestly, we like the way the RS package has translated to the Q3 form - this design really works well on the smaller CUV package. Inside, performance-minded fittings like a flat-bottomed steering wheel, upgraded gauges and sport seats bring the whole RS pack full circle. We'll admit, we're definitely intrigued by this little guy.

But intrigued is all we're likely to be, as Audi has not confirmed any plans to offer the RS Q3 in the United States. Shame, shame, shame. Scroll down to watch a pair of videos featuring the baby RS frolicking in the snow, and while you're there, check out the press release.
Continue reading Audi RS Q3 is funky, chunky, spunky forbidden fruit [w/videos]

Audi RS Q3 is funky, chunky, spunky forbidden fruit [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Mar 2013 13:40:00 EST.
Ahead of its big reveal next month at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Audi has released a handful of images and plenty of details for the all-new RS Q3. As the first-ever crossover from the marque with RS branding, this will be the fourth RS model to go on sale this year after the RS5 Cabriolet, RS6 Avant and the RS7, and while UK and Germany sales have been confirmed, there is no word as to whether we can expect this high-performance CUV to be available in the North America.

Sharing its 2.5-liter turbocharged and direct-injected five-cylinder engine with models like the TT RS and the RS3 Sportback, the 2014 Audi RS Q3 should deliver on performance, as it pumps out 310 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque (peak torque starting at just 1,500 rpm and running up through 5,200 rpm). This potent engine is paired to Audi's seven-speed S tronic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive. Despite its small stature, the RS Q3 still tips the scales at just over 3,800 pounds. Even so, performance figures are still impressive with a limited top of 155 miles per hour and a stated 0-62 mph time of 5.5 seconds. The RS Q3 also gets a sport suspension that has been lowered by 25 millimeters, launch control and weight-saving front rotors with a wave-cut and cross-drilled design gripped by massive eight-piston calipers.

Looking almost identical to what we saw last year in concept form in China, the 2014 RS Q3 looks just as sporty as its spec sheet suggests that it is. Up front, the fascia gets massive air intakes with silver vertical accents and, like other recent RS models, the Quattro emblem is written across the lower air intake. The silver accent motif also continues on the grille surround, mirror caps, roof rails and rear diffuser trim, and the oval exhaust outlet is also an identifying feature of Audi's RS cars.

Stepping inside the RS Q3, we find more signature RS elements such as a flat-bottomed steering wheel, gray instrument gauges with red needles and upgraded accent trim like the standard piano black (or optional aluminum and carbon fiber) and sport seats highlighted by contrasting cross stitching.

What do you think, should the RS Q3 come here? Have your say in Comments, and keep your eyes peeled for live reveal coverage early next month.
Continue reading 2014 Audi RS Q3 breaks out ahead of Geneva reveal

2014 Audi RS Q3 breaks out ahead of Geneva reveal originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Feb 2013 11:30:00 EST.
General Motors reported its third-quarter earnings today, and while revenues were up in the three-month period, overall profits were down 14 percent compared to last year. GM's Q3 net revenue was $37.6 billion (almost $1 billion more than 2011), but its net income was $1.5 billion, down from $1.7 billion last year. This is the opposite trend from Chrysler and Ford, which were both up considerably.

According to Automotive News, GM's lower profit came from a combination between the flailing European car market and the increased production of small cars. Losses in Europe grew from $292 million in Q3 2011 to $478 million in Q3 2012, and since 1999, GM has lost more than $17 billion in this market. Also, with new cars like the Chevy Sonic and Spark growing in popularity, these smaller cars have less of a profit margin than GM's SUV cash cows, but the improvements in small cars is helping in markets such as South America.

The South American market has recovered from previous losses to give GM a $114 million profit last quarter, and these numbers are expected to continue climbing thanks to new vehicles like the all-new Chevrolet Onix unveiled last week at the São Paulo Motor Show in Brazil. Another bright spot for GM was that its pension liability dropped by $29 billion thanks to about 30 percent of salaried retirees in the US accepting a lump-sum payment; both figures are higher than GM initially expected.
Continue reading GM profits down 14% in Q3

GM profits down 14% in Q3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 12:59:00 EST.
Now that the bell has rung to signal the end of Q3 2012, Ford is standing in the ring with both hands in the air like Rocky: The company's overall profit of $1.63 billion for the last three months is nearly equal to its entire 2011 total of $1.94B. Those numbers come thank to the record-breaking pretax operating profit in North America of $2.33B on revenues of $19.5B, the third straight quarter that The Blue Oval has crossed the two-billion mark. Customers are paying more, on average, for Ford vehicles, another contributor to the company maintaining double-digit profit margins on its products.

True, there are a couple of bruises. Losses in Europe continue, with The Continent suffering an even larger decline in pretax revenues to $468 million, and European revenue has dropped to $5.8 billion compared to $7.8 billion a year ago. South America is another sore spot, with exchange rates and currency restrictions being blamed for a 23-percent decline in revenue to $2.3 billion and a screeching 97-percent shrinkage in pretax operating profit to $9 million, down from $276 million in the same quarter last year. Global revenue is also down three percent to $32.1 billion.

But North America's numbers have kept the tide rising, even with the rise in the company's North American tax rate to 30 percent, a 20-percent jump over last year. Ford's prognosis for the rest of the year is for strong results and even greater production - 1.5 million in Q4 versus 1.4 million in Q3 - even with expanded costs to market the new models it is introducing as well as continued challenges in Europe. That means great news for two of our three domestic automakers, following the Chrysler announcement of an 80-percent jump in Q3 profit to $381 million. General Motors will report tomorrow. For the inner CFO in you, Ford's number-filled press release is below.
Continue reading Ford up $1.6B in Q3 thanks to record profits in North America

Ford up $1.6B in Q3 thanks to record profits in North America originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Oct 2012 15:20:00 EST.
Chrysler reports that its vehicle sales jumped by 12 percent in the third quarter over the same period in 2011. That step up was enough to bump profits by 80 percent to $381 million on $15.5 billion of net revenue. Moving forward, the automaker expects to see fourth-quarter profit of $210 million, which should help the company realize its forecast of $1.5 billion of net profit for the year. Reuters reports Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne expects the automaker's free cash flow for 2012 to be "well in excess" of $1 billion.

Over the same period, the smallest of the Big Three laid claim to an 11.3-percent slice of the domestic market, thanks largely to a 16-percent jump in US retail sales. More importantly, the manufacturer's net industrial debt now sits at $693 million, down from $2.2 billion one year ago.
Volkswagen is on a mission to dominate sales in almost ever category, with a goal of selling one million Audis and VWs yearly in the United States by 2018. Projected U.S. sales of both brands for 2012 is only 565,000. To bridge that gap, analysts say the two brands will need to compete in almost every sales category.

VW and Audi have the sedan customers covered, but offerings in the crossover segment are slim. Automotive News says it hears VW is planning a couple of crossover variants, the most interesting of which concerns a possible greenlight for the Microbus-inspired Bulli concept from the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Unnamed VW executives are said to have expressed interest in a Microbus-type crossover large enough for five adults. We think a retro-themed Veedub bus would look very nice next to the newly restyled Beetle.

Other rumors have VW developing a seven-seat crossover to compete with Ford's Explorer and the Honda Pilot. The new Chattanooga plant is probably where it would be built in time for sales in 2014.

Sources also say the upcoming Tiguan replacement will be "U.S.-sized" (i.e., larger) for 2014. Fewer than than 30,000 Tiguans are sold every year, possibly because of limited legroom and cargo space compared to competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
VW mulling Microbus-style CUV to ramp up segment sales originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Sep 2012 14:15:00 EST.
The Audi Q2 may soon be the smallest member of Audi's Q family, and a report in Autocar indicates that the company is taking no risks with its feature set. Charged with taking on the Mini Countryman and Nisssan Juke, Audi is giving the Q2 the kinds of looks and options it believes will stand up to established and popular competition.

Looks-wise that means a design said to grab elements from both the Quattro concept of 2010 and the Volkswagen Cross Coupe concept shown at last year's Tokyo Motor Show, sized between the A1 and A3 in length and about as wide as the Q3. We earlier mentioned two four-cylinder engines in the offing, but speculation is that there will actually be five - two gasoline and three diesel - ranging from a 120-horsepower 1.4-liter petrol engine to a 180-hp 2.0-liter diesel engine. A range-topping option will be the S model with a 225-hp version of the 2.0-liter gasoline unit. Buyers will apparently have the choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG transmission, and front- or all-wheel drive.

The "high-quality interior" and exterior are said to get Mini-esque personalization options, and green features like stop/start will keep it frugal. Final bodystyles are still being decided, but we'll see a two-door concept at the Paris Motor Show later this year, with the final version penciled in for the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Audi Q2 concept headed for Paris, production model not until 2015 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Jun 2012 10:00:00 EST.
Audi plans to show off a new concept version of the Q3 at the Worthersee Tour in Austria next week. The Q3 Red Track boasts the same 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine found under the hood of the Audi TT RS, and thus, there's a galloping 340 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque on hand. A seven-speed S Tronic gearbox handles shifting duties and drops the available grunt to all four tires via the company's Quattro all-wheel-drive system. In addition to the extra power, the Red Track wears unique Energy Red paint flecked with gold, while accents like the fender flares and lower fascia are coated in matte gray.

Likewise, the headlight arrays wear body-color accents, and massive 20-inch five-spoke wheels help set the crossover apart from its production kin. Audi also stretched the track by by 1.5 inches and lifted the machine by 1.2 inches for a beefier stance. The Red Track will be on display at the Worthersee Tour starting on May 16. Scroll down for the full press release.
Continue reading Audi Q3 Red Track heads to Worthersee Tour

Audi Q3 Red Track heads to Worthersee Tour originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 May 2012 17:39:00 EST. But now, according to Auto Express, Audi is working on an entry-level Q2 crossover that would take on the likes of the Nissan Juke and Mini Countryman.

Auto Express has come up with a rendering of the Q2 (pictured right, click to see the full deal), which we'll reportedly see in concept form sometime in the next 12 months, and - surprise, surprise - it looks like a sportier Q3 or, more to the point, a high-riding A1. Because of its small size, powertrains will likely be plucked out of the A1 range, meaning a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four and a 1.6-liter diesel four will be offered.

Audi will also reportedly take a cue from Mini with the Q2 launch, encouraging owners to personalize their small CUVs in a number of ways. According to the report, buyers will be able to opt for contrasting roof and mirror colors, as well as different-colored major interior trim bits, including the seats and steering wheel.

The Q2 will ride on the same MQB architecture that is set to underpin the full range of Volkswagen Group small cars. That said, Auto Express reports that the Q2 will launch before the rest of the small cars are facelifted in 2014.
Audi Q2 to take on Nissan Juke? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 May 2012 16:29:00 EST.
Audi has just unveiled a special concept version of the company's Q3 at this week's 2012 Beijing Motor Show to commemorate the year of the dragon. The 2012 Q3 Jinlong Yufeng, or "Golden Dragon In The Wind," caters to the kite surfers of the world thanks to its two roof-mounted carbon-fiber reinforced polymer boards and a clever kite pouch that can also be used to hold wet articles of clothing or serve as a beach umbrella. Designers have also thrown in a set of removable, wireless video cameras that can easily be attached to a sail bar or helmet.

The Q3 Jinlong Yufeng wears Liuli Yellow paint outside as well as a few special off-road body components based on production pieces. Brushed stainless steel running boards, LED spotlights mounted in the grille and integrated dual-exit exhaust are all part of the package. Indoors, designers have stitched the vehicle's surfaces with yellow contrasting thread. The seats use woven leather covers and each door panel features a yellow leather insert.

A turbocharged 2.5-liter direct-injection five-cylinder engine delivers 310 horsepower through a seven-speed transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive - enough, Audi says,to power the Q3 Jinlong Yufeng to 62 mph in 5.5 seconds. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Audi unveils Q3 Jinlong Yufeng in Beijing

Audi unveils Q3 Jinlong Yufeng in Beijing originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 19:01:00 EST.
Audi is hot in China right now, and the four-ringed automaker will show its appreciation by unveiling this hot-to-trot RS Q3 concept at the Beijing Motor Show later this month. Any RS vehicle worthy of the label begins with an outstanding powertrain. In this case, the RS Q3 features the same 2.5-liter TFSI turbocharged five-cylinder that is available in the TT RS, with 360 horsepower and a zero to 62 time pegged at just 5.2 seconds. The powertrain also features a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and full-time Quattro all-wheel-drive.

The pumped-up softroader also features several RS-themed styling cues, including a black honeycomb grille that Audi says has a particularly three-dimensional appearance. The concept also features brushed and polished aluminum trim around said grille, tinted headlights and an updated bumper with graping air intakes. The little Q3 also features massive 20-inch aluminum wheels coupled with a ride height that has been dropped by a full inch.

On the inside, the RS Q3 concept displays a blacked-out theme throughout, save for one high-class exception: The seat inserts feature dark blue Alcantara inserts surrounded by Nappa leather. The same dark blue re-appears in the form of door inserts that integrate blue luminescent glass fibers.

Those of us on this side of the pond in the market for a luxury crossover should be familiar with the gargantuan Audi Q7 and its little brother, the Q5. Overseas the German automaker also offers an even more compact Q3. Today on the floor of the Detroit Auto Show, Audi announced it will be bringing the Q3 to the North American market, and this is the show car with which they broke the news.

Called the Q3 Vail, what we have here is a concept version of the overseas-market crossover with some added off-road trim. Named for the Colorado ski resort, the Q3 Vail has lower body cladding similar to the treatment on Audi's Allroad wagons, in matte grey to contrast with the glossy red paint job. The theme is further accented by aluminum underbody guard plates and extra lighting, with 20-inch wheels to round out the package. The red, black and grey color theme carries into the cabin, and there's a 314-horsepower, 2.5-liter turbo five-cylinder powering all four wheels through a seven-speed automatic for an impressive 5.5-second sprint to 62 mph.

There's more to digest in the press release after the jump, and both stock and live images in the dual galleries. But what interested customers need to know now is that Audi is targeting a U.S. market launch for the existing production Q3,which will continue to be built by Seat in Spain, sometime next year.

Audi CEO Rupert Stadler slipped up while talking to Bloomberg, telling the financial pub that in addition to the 2013 A4 and A4 AllRoad, a small crossover concept will debut at the Detroit Auto Show next week.

Stadler didn't give up anything in the way of details, but the concept will be dubbed the "Vail" and could be a way to gauge reception of a smaller Audi CUV in the States.

If we had to guess, the Vail will feature an Allroad-like treatment on the Euro-only Q3, likely involving a higher ride height, plastic body treatments and a more go-anywhere attitude. We'll know for sure in a few days, but we hope that's not all Audi has planned.
Audi to unveil Vail CUV concept in Detroit originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 15:58:00 EST. We used our horn more in one week than we had in our entire driving existence.

Audi recently had one of us over to China for a solid week of long drives in that real-world part of China we rarely get to learn about. We report on the country a lot, but save for attending the its auto shows, we've basically been blindly following word of mouth and other media reports - up until now.

Our week-long adventure was admittedly almost entirely on interstate toll roads, but we did get off beaten paths a bit, drove through several chaotic downtown areas, dealt with China's "interesting" traffic scene, paid tolls, refilled fuel tanks, used Chinese roadside restrooms - *gack!* - and used our horn more in one week than we had in our entire driving existence up until this journey.

After a brief gawk at the massive new Audi assembly factory in the more provincial and unbreathable factory-heavy Changchun in the far northeast, we hit the comparatively Vegas-like Shanghai where our drive began. From autumnal downtown Shanghai all the way south to a quite tropical Hong Kong-influenced Shenzhen, we bore witness to a good portion of the Chinese miracle.
Continue reading We drive 1,200 miles through China in Audi's Q3

We drive 1,200 miles through China in Audi's Q3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 11:55:00 EST.
Audi has grown its share of the U.S. luxury market with the help of a steady stream of new products. But while Audi has been on a product rampage, not all of its latest designs take up residence in U.S. showrooms.

Included in that group of vehicles is the Q3, but AutoWeek reports that Audi's North American CEO Johan de Nysschen is at least considering bringing the diminutive CUV to America. That's not a lot to go on, and de Nysschen tells AW that the Q3 will need to "overcome certain challenges" in order for Audi to introduce the model to U.S. customers.

In other words, the Q3 will need to be cheap enough for U.S. consumers to want to buy it, yet expensive enough for Audi to turn a tidy profit. What's more, the Four-Ringed crossover will need to sell at a decent clip even if the price is right, or Audi could still lose money. If the stars align and the Q3 gets the green light, de Nysschen says it'll likely happen in time for the model's mid-cycle refresh.
De Nysschen says Audi still debating Q3 for U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Sep 2011 16:00:00 EST.
The idea of a small premium crossover like the new Audi Q3, while certainly not lost on North Americans, does seem to face both corporate and public resistance Stateside. The frequent customer logic goes something like, "It's small and expensive, so why wouldn't I just buy the bigger Q5 or maybe an A4?" Hence most of the reason why Audi North America hesitates on bringing the Q3 over to us.

This sporty, tall sort-of-A3 is considered an "A-SUV" in Europe, belonging to the smallest A-segment of the market there. Built at the underutilized yet state-of-the-art Seat factory in Martorell, Spain, on a spanking new production line, Audi projects annual sales in a full year of 100,000 units. Chief stated competition for the Q3 includes the BMW X1, Land Rover Evoque and the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz BLK currently in prototype testing.

2012 Audi Q3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Jul 2011 11:57:00 EST.
Audi's 2.5-liter turbo five has shown remarkable potential. It powers the RS3 hot hatch, the new TT RS, the Volkswagen Golf24 endurance racer and was shoehorned into the A1 Clubsport Quattro concept. Now, word has it that this delicious powerplant will be dropped into the Q3 crossover to make for a new Q3 RS.

The news arrives only weeks after the Q3 started production at sister-company Seat's plant in Martorell, Spain. The model is initially being offered with 2.0-liter engines, burning gasoline as a TSFI with 168 or 208 horsepower, as well as a TDI diesel with 138 or 175 horsepower.

The turbo five produces 335 horsepower in the RS3 and TT RS, 450 horsepower in the race-spec Golf24 and upwards of 500 horsepower in the A1 concept, so you can count on the Q3 RS offering a considerable boost in performance over the existing models. Reports indicate that it could be detuned to 300 horsepower (possibly for the benefit of more torque) in the hot crossover, however. And while Audi has yet to confirm the model, sources inside Germany expect it to hit the market sometime next year.
Audi preparing 300-horsepower Q3 RS originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Jun 2011 14:01:00 EST.
Known though it has been for decades by its Quattro all-wheel drive system, Audi didn't launch its first crossover until the Q7 in 2005. Ever since, the German automaker has been steadily expanding its crossover lineup. But while most vehicles seem to get bigger and bigger with every successive generation of models, Audi's high-riders keep getting smaller.

Following on the launch of the Q5 in 2008, Audi has just started production of the Q3. But it's not about to stop there. A Q6 is rumored to be in the mix to take on the likes of the BMW X6, but rumors are also surfacing that Audi could opt to build an even smaller crossover than the Q3.

Potentially labeled Q1, the diminutive softroader could follow one of three approaches, taking its platform either from the A1 hatchback, the modular architecture planned for the next-generation A3, or the upcoming A2. Whatever the basis, sources suggest the Q1 could be rushed to market in as little as two years from now, hitting dealers as early as 2013.

Rumors are also circling of a more performance-oriented Q4, that could (like the Porsche Cajun) offer a three-door body-style, with flared fenders and such. One way or another, Audi's crossover range isn't showing any signs of slowing down.
Audi developing new Q1, Q4 crossovers originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 13:29:00 EST.
It wasn't that long ago that Audi had no SUVs in its lineup - aside from the A6 Allroad Quattro - despite being known for its all-wheel-drive vehicles. But that's all changed, just as it has for BMW and Porsche. The Q7 was followed by the Q5, and now the Q3 has started production as well.

The first Q3 rolled off the assembly line today at the plant in Martorell, Spain. The facility belongs principally to Audi's sister-company Seat, but has gone through a considerable expansion - funded by both Audi and Seat - to prepare for the Q3's production.
Seat was awarded the internal contract to build the Audi Q3 at its factory in Martorell, Spain, but jobs aren't the only thing the Spanish subsidiary of Volkswagen may get out of the arrangement. According to a new report from What Car?, Seat will receive a production version of the IBX concept on the same platform.

The IBX show car was unveiled last month at the Geneva Motor Show, packing a hybrid powertrain and coupe-like three-door bodystyle. When it enters production - tipped for sometime next year - it is likely to more closely follow convention in both drivetrain and layout.

The last time Seat developed a crossover was with the Tribu concept of 2007, though its production was halted midway through its development process when the global economy began to tank.
