Before Chrysler had Street and Racing Technology, it had Performance Vehicle Operations. What the two entities have in common, before SRT became its own brand, of course, is that each was created to take Chrysler and Dodge (and Plymouth, before it was unceremoniously killed off) vehicles to the next level of style and performance.

We'll leave the question of whether or not the old Plymouth (and later Chrysler) Prowler was ultimately a stylish, performance-oriented car to you, but the boys and girls currently leading the SRT charge at the Pentastar headquarters are keen to accept the retro-rod into the fold.

According to the automaker, all of SRT's current high-performance models owe a debt of gratitude to the old Prowler, due mostly to that car's use of lightweight bits and pieces and innovative construction techniques. If nothing else, the fact that the Prowler's frame is "the largest machined automotive part in history" is pretty cool. By now, surely everyone has heard of Tulsa's buried Belvedere. Placed in its "watertight" cement coffin in 1957, it didn't do too well over half a century. But technology then was not nearly as advanced as it is now, right? So how would one go about burying a car today with the hopes of it surviving 50 years?

In 1998, Tulsa buried a preproduction Plymouth Prowler, and we'll find out how well it does when it's dug out in 2048. This time though, the city did it right. Instead of ancient 1950s technology of concrete and plastic wrap, Tulsa chose a "seamless plastic box" filled with an inert gas, which was then put into an above-ground mausoleum and partially covered with dirt. They also drained all the car's fluids and replaced them with synthetics. We can't help but wonder if in 2048, the world will again turn its eyes on Tulsa to see a badly-decomposed car pulled from the ground and laugh at the ancient 1998 technology used to preserve it.

And instead of the bobby pins, cigarettes and tranquilizers the Belvedere had in its glovebox, the Prowler is entombed with a pair of inline skates, a cell phone, the front of an ATM and a large collection of Beanie Babies. Yeah, that should age much better than smokes and drugs.

The buried Prowler did at least survive a few years longer than its nameplate.

[Source: Tulsa World via Hemmings]
Video: The other Tulsa time capsule originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 24 Jun 2007 12:38:00 EST.
Some would say that the Tramontana supercar looks like a mating experiment between the Plymouth Prowler and the Batmobile. We'll call the looks "unique". Either way, this one-seater will be fast and it will be light. We dig the open wheel look, and the wood accents on the exterior are way sweeter than the Griswald's station wagon, but more than anything else, it's the power that gets our attention. A 12-cylinder twin-turbo engine is sweet in just about any application, but mated to a vehicle with room for one seat and carbon-fiber to reduce weight and you've got a freaking rocket on wheels. You even get to choose your output by switching between 542 and 710 hp.

Love the looks or hate them, the new supercar from Tramontana should be very interesting for whomever is looking out from behind the driver's wheel. The press release is available after the jump.

It's an interesting question, as Valde-Dapena notes, because no retro vehicle has ever been substantially redesigned. Like the recent refreshening of the Volkswagen New Beetle, Chrysler's redo of the PT Cruiser for 2006 amounted to minor visual tinkering. Reportedly, however, Chrysler is looking to have an answer ready for an end of the decade launch.

But what to do? The new Sebring offers a larger frame on which the next PT Cruiser could be built, along with the ability to accept a V6 engine. American tastes, however, are moving away from larger vehicles with less fuel efficient engines, which is one reason the current Cruiser with its fuel-efficient four cylinder is still selling well after six years on the market. Valdes-Dapena also suggests Chrysler could rebadge the similarly sized Dodge Caliber and skin it in a retro theme.

Regardless of what platform the next PT Cruiser employs, the real question is how will Chrysler update a look that's based on distinct visual cues from the past? The article picks the brain of David Zatz, the purveyor of Allpar.com (score one for the web journalists!), who offers the best quote of concern when he says, "Will they attack all the things people pick out as problems and sandpaper off all the edges until there's nothing?" We'll have to wait and see.

[Source: CNN.com]
[Vote for this article on Netscape]
What comes next for the Chrysler PT Cruiser? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Jun 2006 06:58:00 EST.
