Automakers are always trying to find creative ways to introduce new products to the media, and Subaru definitely came up with an interesting idea to unveil the new 2014 Forester earlier this week. With a large screen and two covered Foresters, Subaru used projection mapping to make for one eye-catching presentation.

Using a computer to project images onto an object, Subaru was able to "build" its new Forester on stage using robots, lasers and fans. The whole process is fun to watch, but the coolest part of the video is watching a set digital robotic arms build the Forester's drivetrain and then throw it underneath the awaiting crossover. We've seen projection mapping before on a Lamborghini Reventon and Toyota Yaris for promotional purposes, but this is the first time we've seen such an innovative use of the technology for a product launch.

Though we still can't explain the technology, we're becoming big fans of projection mapping, as can also be seen in this video that has also been featured on these pages.

From what we can gather, a Russian marketing team called Radugadesign was behind this production, and we can only assume that a lot of hard work and some sinister numbers crunching from a swath of powerful computers and graphics cards went into its making.

As to why this presentation existed in the first place, we have no idea... other than some vague notion that it was produced for Marlboro. Yes, we're assuming it's the cigarette company. What Marlboro has to do with an Audi A7, we won't even attempt to explain.

In any case, we suggest you see the results for yourself in the video after the break.
Continue reading Watch this Audi transform into a moving picture show

Watch this Audi transform into a moving picture show originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jan 2012 20:00:00 EST.
There are some basic automotive shapes that we're trained to admire. The Ford Model T, for the impact an inexpensive car had on the American populace. The Volkswagen Beetle, for the way its revolutionary design rebuilt an industry in Germany. And the classic wedge-shaped Lamborghini, for the way it looks fast even while standing completely still.

One such Raging Bull is the Reventon. Produced in limited quantities at a cost of a million euros ($1.3 million at today's rates), the Reventon is a real-deal supercar capable of hitting speeds of over 220 miles per hour. But, like any proper Lambo, it doesn't need to be moving to get our blood pumping.

A group of specialists called The Media Merchants took one flat black Reventon into its studio for a session of projection mapping. We don't know what that means, but you can read plenty more about it here. What we do know, on the other hand, is that projection mapping can result in some beautiful images captured on video. See for yourself after the break.
Continue reading Watch a Lamborghini Reventon look fast without moving

Watch a Lamborghini Reventon look fast without moving originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 19:59:00 EST.
