A rock or a brick dropped from a bridge onto highway traffic below can do a massive amount of damage to cars, not to mention a fatal amount of damage to the people inside them. So how much more dangerous might a falling deer be? The image above tells the tale: as a truck driver on Interstate 295 in Richmond, Virginia was approaching the Buffin Road overpass, somebody threw a dead deer over the side of the bridge. Even crazier, the deer was tied to the bridge with a rope.

The driver said the deer wasn't hanging as he neared the overpass, and he figures it was thrown over just as he got there. When the deer went through the windshield the driver was able to avoid it, but he was hit in the face by the rope and flying glass. The deer came to rest in his cab, and there is still rope tied to the Buffin Road overpass. Check out the video below for the full story as reported by WTVR.
Continue reading Truck driver lucky to survive grisly deer swinging escapade

Truck driver lucky to survive grisly deer swinging escapade originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Dec 2012 12:46:00 EST.
We're not sure how we missed this while attending the centennial event for Chevrolet yesterday, but apparently a cyber prankster got the better of General Motors while we were busying reporting on a new Trailblazer, the Spark EV and the return of the Belle Isle Grand Prix to Detroit.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, visitors to the company's headquarters yesterday would see the word "sucks" on their computer screens after any mention of certain competitors when using a particular Wi-Fi network in the building. The targeted competitors were Chrysler, Ford, Toyota and Honda.

A GM spokesman confirmed that the automaker had nothing to do with the prank, which was quickly fixed. The prank's perpetrator? A subcontractor who had helped set up the network. When pressed on why he/she did it, the prankster reportedly said it was intended to be humorous. We're betting the subcontractor's employer won't find it funny when GM takes its business elsewhere next time, which will probably make life suck for the subcontractor.
GM burned by cyber prankster at Chevy centennial event originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 13:30:00 EST.
We can appreciate a well-orchestrated prank as much as the next guy. But being the car nuts we are, we'd implore any would-be prankster to leave cars out of it. TP the guy's house, Saran-wrap the toilet, make a crank call or two if you must. But for the love of all things holy, please leave the cars alone.

At least that's what we thought before we saw the kind of candid-camera prank the BMW Performance Parts team had in store for one driver in Singapore. The proud owner of a 1 Series Coupe returned to her car in the parking lot to find her car fitted with a Performance Power Kit and an upgraded exhaust system. It's a marketing schtick that reminds us of TV shows like Overhaulin', but at least it's sort of car prank we can get on board with. Check it out after the jump, and be mindful of a little bit of Not Safe For Work language.
Continue reading BMW pulls The Switch on unsuspecting 1 Series owner

BMW pulls The Switch on unsuspecting 1 Series owner originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Oct 2011 12:30:00 EST.
Have you ever pulled a prank only to wish you hadn't? We're guessing there's at least one teenage boy in Australia who knows exactly what we're talking about. The young man in question, who has yet to be officially identified by police, apparently rode his Kawasaki dirt bike right through a busy supermarket. If you think that's funny, then you should see what happens next.

Beyond the jump is store security camera footage of the incident. After the pubescent biker zipped through the first set of doors, he quickly approached the second set of automated doors, which failed to open as (poorly) planned. After appearing to slide for some distance, the biker runs headlong into the still-closed doors to the delight of blooper fans the world over.

Now, the biker didn't appear to hit the door all that hard, and he did eventually get away, but the Australian police think they know the identity of the suspected culprit. The local law enforcement is, as you may have guessed, very interested in talking to their primary suspect. Some of the charges being discussed are dangerous driving, driving without a license and conduct endangering life. Hit the jump to check out the video.
Add a few residential speed cameras into that mix, and what you have is a creative perversion of the entire speed camera system. Teens in Maryland have evidently been printing out the license plates numbers of rival teens, putting them on their own cars, and then purposely blasting by speed cameras posted in residential neighborhoods. The rival teen -- or his parents -- then gets a $40 citation in the mail.

The police say they haven't heard anything about it, and the local government doesn't sound like it has come up with any way to prevent or limit the habit. Which means that teens will be teens, and parents will be left to complain about it and fight the citations in court. Said one parent, "I hope the public at large will complain loudly enough that local Montgomery County government officials will change their policy of using these cameras for monetary gain. The practice of sending speeding tickets to faceless recipients without any type of verification is unwarranted and an exploitation of our rights."
