Porsche has amassed quite an impressive trophy case in just about every racing series it has ever entered, and one of its most dominant machines has to be the 911 RSR from the 1970s. Taking part in various GT-class competitions, the 911 RSR managed to take home three international and seven German victories in 1973, its very first year of competition.

Not one to downplay its racing successes, Porsche has released an informative video detailing the 911 RSR's impressive heritage. The 1973 RSR model owned by the Porsche Museum is detailed beautifully on video, and we have to say it looks absolutely stunning in its vintage Martini Racing livery.

Have a look at the video below for some historic racing action, along with static shots of one of our favorite Porsche models ever created.
Continue reading Porsche Museum highlights history of the 911 RSR

Porsche Museum highlights history of the 911 RSR originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 12 Jan 2013 19:00:00 EST.
The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, has opened the doors on a new special exhibition that celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Porsche Design Studio.

Founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1972, the studio has spent the last four decades designing luxury goods like sunglasses, writing implements and perhaps most famously, watches, as well as a huge selection of industrial products and household goods. The common thread that ties together all of the output of the studio over the years, is an unyieldingly modern and clean aesthetic.

The Porsche Design exhibit features some of the seminal works from the studio, including its first project, a watch dubbed simply Chronograph I. The blacked-out timepiece seems fairly run-of-the-mill by today's standards, but was revolutionary in an era where a gold Rolex served as the standard for high-end wrist wear. Scroll down to see a video that details the exhibit, and the history of the design studio, in more detail.
Continue reading Porsche Design marks 40 years of industrial art-making [w/video]

Porsche Design marks 40 years of industrial art-making [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Nov 2012 18:01:00 EST.
Almost every museum has a private warehousing facility, to hold items that don't fit in its public viewing space or perhaps to hold the originals of works that it doesn't want to risk to the hands of the masses. Jaguar, for instance, calls the secret overflow space it uses for its Heritage Center "Sleepy Hollow."

The $130 million Porsche Museum has 505 cars in its collection, but they aren't all on display at all times. That is why it has an exclusive location "somewhere in the surroundings and suburbs of Stuttgart" used for storage, as a staging area for cars headed to events, and as a vault for projects for other companies like Lada, Mercedes-Benz, Seat, and a concept for a family car for China.

The company gives us a look inside with the first two in the series of videos called Porsche Secrets. The first video is an overview of how the space is used, the second jumps into some of the special cars found therein, such as the 984 "Boxster Junior" concept from 1984 (in the foreground of the above photo), a 1976 924 concept meant to challenge the Mercedes-Benz C111 for endurance records, and a 906 Ollon Villars hillclimb racer. You can watch it below.
Continue reading An inside look at Porsche's other, secret museum

An inside look at Porsche's other, secret museum originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Aug 2012 19:21:00 EST.
We all know what happens when Porsche and social media collide; the world gets another art car. As you may recall, the German sportscar manufacturer created a special version of its 911 GT3 R Hybrid when it crested one million fans on Facebook last February. Now, one year later, Porsche has garnered a staggering two million fans, and the company has taken it upon itself to slather a Cayman S in the faces of ts adoring supporters. With its red-tinted images on a white field, the design gives the Cayman S more than a passing resemblance to the famous Porsche 917 that garnered the company its first Le Mans win.

Porsche plans to display its Facebook Cayman S at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart until January 27. For those of us who can't make the jump to Germany, Porsche has created a special site that provides 360-degree views of the car as well as search function to help you find your face on the Cayman. Head over to the site to check it out.

UPDATE: Porsche has clarified that every fan's face is not, in fact, on the 2-Mill Cayman due to Facebook requiring the automaker to ask permission before they could use people's pics. So unless you opted in for the stunt, don't look for your mug.
Porsche plasters 2M faces on Cayman to celebrate Facebook milestone [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 21 Jan 2012 09:00:00 EST.
The difference between an artist and any other person is not about skill or ability to wield whatever instruments are required to render their work, it's about how an artist perceives things around them. So while most of us may look at, say, the front hood of a Porsche and see a hood, an artist may see it as a canvas.

That was, at least, evidently the case with a group of 19 Latin American artists who, curated by Argentinean painter Jorge Gómez, turned 24 hoods from the 911 GT2 into works of art. Their media included materials ranging from acrylic to vulcanized rubber, and the results are being displayed from now until January 8th at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.
Sixty years ago, New York City businessman Max Hoffman began selling a diminutive German sports car with an air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine hanging off the rear axle. Today, Porsche is one of the most highly respected performance brands in the world.

To celebrate its diamond anniversary in America, Porsche is inviting fans to share its favorite stories about the brand on an online family tree. Even better if you still have an old Porsche stashed away in a barn or garage somewhere, Porsche wants to hear from you. If you have the oldest car in each of a dozen model categories, Porsche will have it photographed for a special exhibit at the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. One car will be selected for display at the Porsche stand at the Los Angeles Auto Show in December. Head over to www.Porsche60Years.com to submit your story or car.

1938 Porsche Type 64 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Way back in 1938 - a full decade before the legendary 356 - Ferdinand Porsche developed what the German automaker now considers the "first ancestor of all Porsche sportscars." Called the Type 64, this car employed a number of construction methods and styling that would later come to typify the brand that carries its designer's last name from the aforementioned 356 all the way to today's 911.

The streamlined Type 64 has sat as the "first and most prominent exhibit" at the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen since it opened in January of 2009, and it will be shipped outside of Germany for the first time since being carefully restored by the automaker as it makes its way to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Type 64 will be on display in Atlanta for the The Allure of the Automobile exhibition from March 21st until June 20th. During this time away, the Porsche Museum in Germany will show off the wooden buck that was used as a frame to pound out the Type 64's complex aluminum bodywork. Check out our high-res image gallery below and make the jump for the official press release.

If you're planning a trip to Germany, Stuttgart should be included in your itinerary. The city is home to both Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, but if factory tours aren't enough to make it worth your while, Porsche recently inaugurated a new €100 million museum displaying a collection that includes 80 of the company's most historic creations on 1,000 square meters of floor space housed in a dazzling new building. We recently had a chance to check it out in person, and we'd highly recommend any gearhead worth his or her pistons to do the same. And when you do, you'll probably want to bring some extra cash, because as you'd expect, the gift shop is packed with desirable items, the latest of which Porsche has just revealed.

The new collection at the Porsche Museum shop includes sportswear - including the 356 Workshop Shirt for men and the retro "I too prefer Porsche" tee for the ladies - as well as books and DVDs outlining the company's history along with the usual suspects from metal signs and posters to keychains and exclusive 1:18 scale models. You can check 'em all out in the gallery below and the press release after the jump, but if you want to pick something up, you'll have to go in person.
However, if things are conspiring to keep you from visiting the pyramid of Porsche's history, then allow us to recommend a virtual tour via interactive floorplans, courtesy of Wallpaper. There are 25 photos from the various floors (almost as beautiful the ones in our gallery below) highlighting the museum's more dramatic locations.
The new monochromatic steel structure at Porscheplatz is designed to be a symbolic icon of the "Porsche Idea" presented, in all its complexity, inside. More than three decades after the original Porsche Museum opened in Stuttgart, Germany, the family-owned automaker invested more than $130 million in an all-new facility to present the storied history of the marque. The new museum is designed to welcome more than 200,000 visitors each year. In addition to the 80 historic vehicles on rolling display, the inspiring building houses a workshop for restoration, historical archives and generous conference areas. We were invited to a special preview of the new Porsche Museum just days before the doors officially opened last week. Follow us inside for a tour after the jump.

Gallery: Porsche Museum in Stuttgart

All photos Copyright (C) 2009 Michael C. The museum spans over 1,000 square meters of floor space, wrapped in stunning architecture and housing a collection of over 80 significant Porsches from the marque's history, from the first 356 to the latest Panamera. Included among the expositions is a section dedicated to the evolution of the 911 Turbo, an array of competition cars - including Porsche's victorious rally, Dakar and Le Mans challengers and Niki Lauda's Porsche-powered McLaren - concept cars from across the decades, some of Ferdinand Porsche's original tractors and more.

The museum will be officially dedicated later this week before it opens its doors to the public on January 31, after which the museum will be open from Tuesday to Sunday every week from 9 am until 6 pm. We'll be posting our own tour of the review soon, but in the meantime, check out the museum's website and the images in the gallery below.

Gallery: Porsche Museum

[Source: Porsche via Le Blog Auto]
New Porsche museum opens this week in Stuttgart originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 18:31:00 EST.
