The Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, has opened the doors on a new special exhibition that celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Porsche Design Studio.

Founded by Ferdinand Porsche in 1972, the studio has spent the last four decades designing luxury goods like sunglasses, writing implements and perhaps most famously, watches, as well as a huge selection of industrial products and household goods. The common thread that ties together all of the output of the studio over the years, is an unyieldingly modern and clean aesthetic.

The Porsche Design exhibit features some of the seminal works from the studio, including its first project, a watch dubbed simply Chronograph I. The blacked-out timepiece seems fairly run-of-the-mill by today's standards, but was revolutionary in an era where a gold Rolex served as the standard for high-end wrist wear. Scroll down to see a video that details the exhibit, and the history of the design studio, in more detail.
Continue reading Porsche Design marks 40 years of industrial art-making [w/video]

Porsche Design marks 40 years of industrial art-making [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Nov 2012 18:01:00 EST.
When using or wearing branded gear is cause to ask yourself, "Um, too much?" the answer is usually a resounding "Yes." If you're incapable of responding to this question honestly, then Porsche Design has created a new suite of accessories for you. The Colors of 1968 collection celebrates the available hues of the 911 at the close of the sixties: Tangerine, Polo Red, Irish Green and Ossi Blue.

In addition to the predictable $60 t-shirts and a themed messenger bag (above), you can also snap up future dust-collectors like the Porsche Design "Speedminton" set.

Described as a mix of badminton, squash and tennis, Speedminton still boils down to the genteel art of whacking birdies at an opponent, something we're sure you'll be instantly remarkable at with your black carbon-composite rackets and candy-corn-colored shuttlecocks.

Also available are new additions to the Porsche Design Driver's Selection Martini Racing collection-inhale-which should elevate the golf-course parking lot rivalry between you and your Ferrari-jacket-wearing counterparts to Bloods vs. Crips intensity. More details about the latest Porsche Design swag can be found below.
Continue reading You can now buy your very own Porsche Design Shuttlecock

You can now buy your very own Porsche Design Shuttlecock originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 23 Jun 2012 17:04:00 EST.
Take a flight overseas and you may happen upon a Porsche Design store in an airport somewhere. That's because, while the automaker's product-design division has dozens of locations around the world, few of them are in the United States for a brand that is typically European in its focus. But all that's changing with the company's new flagship store.

Rather than locating itself in a traditional European capital or a mall in some emerging market in Asia, the new Porsche Design mega-store is based right here in these United States. The new SoHo location, on West Broadway in Manhattan, New York, encompasses some 250 square meters of retail space. That includes displays for the brand's fashion lines, as well as its other products (ranging from luggage and pens to watches and phones) and a dedicated 50-square-meter VIP area for big spenders.

If you're planning a trip to New York, be prepared to spend all your savings on designer Blackberries and driving gloves. But if you're not heading to the Big Apple in the near future, you can still check out the press release after the jump and the array of high-resolution images in the gallery above.
Continue reading Porsche Design opens new flagship store in SoHo

Porsche Design opens new flagship store in SoHo originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 08:28:00 EST. At least it does now as a new project on Miami Beach prepares for construction.

Called Porsche Design Tower, the project is a joint effort between the design studio and real estate developer Gil Dezer. The 57-story block on 2.2 acres of prime Collins Avenue real estate is set to incorporate 132 housing units, each with its own parking spaces. That bit is straightforward enough, but it's where the slots are situated that is the novelty.

Rather than have residents park downstairs and take elevators up to their condos, the project includes three robotic car elevators that allow residents to take their cars right up to their pads. It's not the first project that incorporates car elevators, but is the first planned by Porsche Design, and could lead to similar projects across the United States. So even if you don't want to live in your Cayenne, you can still live with it.
Porsche Design Tower opening in Miami complete with car elevators originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 08:01:00 EST.
While its styling has refined over successive generations, you don't buy a Porsche for how it looks. You buy one for how it works. And the same could be said of a BlackBerry. The favorite communications tool of businesspeople worldwide and a number of private consumers as well, the BlackBerry is - like a Porsche - more about function than form. Leave it to Porsche Design, then, to up its style factor.

Having already produced phones on its own, Porsche Design has long been rumored to be working on a project for Research In Motion, the Canadian company responsible for unleashing the addictive device upon the world. And here it is.

The co-branded "Porsche Design P'9981 Smartphone from BlackBerry" packs a 1.2 GHz processor, HD video camera, eight gigs of internal (expandable) memory, a QWERTY keyboard and BlackBerry 7 OS into a slick forged stainless steel case with leather back and a touch display screen. A personal concierge service is included with the P'9981, which still doesn't make its estimated $2,000 price tag any more reasonable. Then again, it's the kind of thing you'd expect a style-conscious business executive to be talking on when he cuts you off in his Panamera. Details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Yes, Porsche Design has made its own Blackberry

Yes, Porsche Design has made its own Blackberry originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 01 Nov 2011 07:58:00 EST. It's not often that cars and whiskey cross paths on these pages, but it does happen. One distillery manager began charging his EV off of spent barley. Another blended special bottles for Formula One drivers. Now Porsche Design has teamed with Johnnie Walker for the exclusive scotch packages you see here.

The Johnnie Walker Blue Label Collection by Porsche Design Studio includes three items. The collection starts out with The Chiller, a case made of brushed titanium and blue leather to hold one square bottle of Walker's finest blend. Its top turns into an ice bucket. next is The Cube, whose top also turns into an ice bucket, but its larger encompasses an individually-numbered bottle of Blue Label, four crystal tumblers, and a set of stainless-steel tongs.

The piece de resistance, however, is the Private Bar: a six-and-a-half-foot-tall tower of titanium, glass and leather. It opens and pivots 180 degrees automatically (via electronic sensors) to reveal three bottles of Blue Label, four illuminated crystal tumblers, chilled water and an ice bucket.

All three items were styled by Porsche Design at its studio in Austria, and they don't come cheap. The Chiller and The Cube sell for £240 ($375) and £490 ($770) respectively through a selection of high-end retailers in London. The Private Bar is available for about $150,000 by special order. Check them out for yourselves in the attached photo gallery and the pair of press releases after the jump.
Continue reading Porsche Design raises the bar with Johnnie Walker Blue Label Collection

Porsche Design raises the bar with Johnnie Walker Blue Label Collection originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 01 Oct 2011 14:02:00 EST.
There are many elements that go into making a Porsche a Porsche, and one of them is the minimalist dashboard. Ten years ago, Porsche Design, the company's Austrian product design division, took its cues from a 911's instrument cluster and designed a wristwatch after it. And now they've updated the design with a new model.

The P'6620 is made of titanium with available black PVD coating in a nod to the original black watch that FA Porsche pioneered in 1972. Inside the oversize 44-milimeter case and behind the anti-glare, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal sits an ETA Valjoux 7753 chronograph function with power reserve that can keep it going for two days straight without moving from your night table.

The overall package is about as slick as they come, and sells for about six grand. Check it out in the press release after the jump and the gallery of high-resolution images.
Continue reading Porsche Design reinvents the Dashboard watch

Porsche Design reinvents the Dashboard watch originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 03 Sep 2011 10:01:00 EST.
Drivers of the Porsche 911 may find it amusingly easy to swing the tail around, though they'll have lost their sense of direction in no time. Fortunately, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche designed a compass watch back in 1978 that combined the functions, as you might have guessed, of a compass and a watch. And now his design company has followed up with a modernized re-issue of the classic.

Crafted from black PVD-coated titanium, the P'6520 Compass Watch features an automatic three-hand watch face with date function and luminescent hands that tilts upwards to reveal a liquid compass.

Compared to its 1978 precursor, the case has grown by three millimeters to a fashionably oversize 42 mm in diameter, and does away with the aluminum construction in favor of the non-allergenic space-age metal. Production, however, is limited to a highly symbolic 911 examples. Follow the jump for the full press release and check out the images in the high-res gallery for a closer look.
Continue reading Porsche Design shows you which way to go with retro compass watch

Porsche Design shows you which way to go with retro compass watch originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jul 2011 08:31:00 EST.
If you were surprised when Porsche started producing SUVs and four-door sedans, wait until you get a look at these. Following recent bicycles created by (or for) the likes of Mini, Maserati, McLaren and Land Rover, Zuffenhausen's merchandizing division Porsche Design has just added a pair of new bikes to its Driver's Selection range.

The Porsche Bike S is built around an aluminum frame with an 11-speed toothed belt drive system, while the Porsche Bike RS (short for Rennsport) features a carbon fiber frame and 20-speed Shimano XTR gear system. Both pack 29" wheels and hydraulic Magura disc brakes, and an individually-numbered anti-theft label fitted under the paint.

In short, perfect for tossing in the back of your Cayenne Hybrid and heading out to your favorite bike path for a little self-propelled wheeled enjoyment. Follow the jump for the full press release, scope out the high-res images in the gallery and follow this link to the dedicated website for more.
Continue reading Porsche finds new configuration for four wheels with a pair of street bikes

Porsche finds new configuration for four wheels with a pair of street bikes originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 09:01:00 EST.
Some might associated Porsche with speed. Others might equate the brand and its products a feeling of ecstasy. Of course, if the boys at Top Gear bought a used one from the '80s, they'd probably claim to find a certain powdery residue left on the dashboard. But the latest offering from the company's product design division, is a, um... well, it's a water pipe.

The Porsche Design Shisha is the latest addition to the brand's World Collection, which already includes such items as chopsticks and tea sets. The slick hookah pipe is made in Germany and stands nearly two feet tall with a hose made of TecFlex - the same material Porsche Design uses on a range of pens.

This decidedly Teutonic take on an age-old Middle Eastern device is available exclusively at the company's new shop at Harrods department store in London. The store was sold last year to the Qatari royal family, which in turn just happens to own 10 percent of Porsche. So if the production of the Cayenne didn't speak loudly enough as to which developing market Porsche was banking on, well... you can put that in your pipe and smoke it. Porsche is known for some of the sleekest driving machines on the market. LaCie, meanwhile, makes some of the slickest hard drives. Where they intersect is the latest range of external storage devices, penned by Porsche Design for LaCie.

Collaboration between the two companies dates back to 2003, and the new LaCie Porsche Design mobile and desktop hard drives feature minimalist brushed aluminum cases that would instantly look at home next to your Acer Ferrari or Asus Lamborghini laptops for the ultimate in automotive-inspired computer hardware.

The devices are available in sizes ranging from 500 gigabytes all the way up 2 terabytes with prices starting at $104.99. Follow the jump for more details in the press release and scope out the designs in the high-res image gallery.
Continue reading Porsche Designs sleek aluminum hard drives for LaCie

Porsche Designs sleek aluminum hard drives for LaCie originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 30 Jun 2011 07:01:00 EST.
Traditionally, Porsche hasn't been a name commonly associated with snow. That was before the German automaker got into the SUV game, though, and maybe just as important for the impending winter season, the downhill sled market, too.

A couple of years ago, Porsche Design <strike>rolled</strike> slid out its award-winning aluminum sled for kids, and has now followed up with an advanced composite bobsled. The design takes its cues from parabolic skis, with a slight bend in the runners for better steerability. Porsche Design also toiled over the optimal camber angle, kept the weight down to just 8.8 lbs, and got it certified to TÜV safety standards - all that for around $225 (hey, we never said Porsche ever did anything on the cheap). Follow the jump for the full press release and the images in the gallery below for a closer look.

Porsche is looking to help five lucky families celebrate the holiday season this year. The German automaker's lifestyle accessory division, Porsche Design, has come up with what has to be the world's costliest advent calendar. Instead of an array of tasty chocolates stashed in a cardboard calendar, the company has built an aluminum tower nearly six-feet tall. There are unique Porsche Design gifts designed to correspond with each day in the run up to Christmas, including niceties like a P'6910 mechanical stopwatch, a full P'7340 kitchen and, probably most impressively, an RFF28 "motor yacht" with a single 525-horsepower Mercury engine. Quite how they get the last two items to fit in the tower, we're not entirely sure.

The rest of the days are marked by goodies like Porsche Design cuff links, pens and sunglasses dipped in 18-karat yellow gold. The price for all of this finery? A cool one $1 million, but with only five of the calendars being created, we're guessing that they'll have a shot at selling them all. If you've got the funds and nothing better to spend it on, Porsche says you can request your own calendar at any Porsche Design store. Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Porsche Design P'6612 Dashboard Le Mans 1970 Limited Edition - Click above for high-res image gallery

Some races come and go, but a handful remain inextricably intertwined with the very fabric of motor racing around the world. Races like the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The latter is well known worldwide as one of the most grueling tests of man and machine, and nobody has won it more times than Porsche.

The German marque's first victory came at the hands of Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood, who led a 1-2-3 finish for Porsche behind the wheel of their iconic 917 K. Forty years later, the company's merchandizing division, Porsche Design, has released a limited-edition timepiece to commemorate the feat.

The Porsche Design P'6612 Dashboard Le Mans 1970 Limited Edition, as you might have guessed from the name, features a face styled after the 917 K's dashboard instruments, with white indices on a black background and red hands and accents, offset by the number 23 that adorned the winning long-tail 917 K and which followed Herrmann throughout his career. The tachometer scale around the bezel can be used to calculate overall speed, etched into the brushed and polished titanium case and affixed with a perforated calfskin strap with red topstitching reminiscent of the 917's steering wheel.

Only 917 examples of the special edition chronograph will be offered, released just in time for the Le Mans Classic. Each comes accompanied by a scale model of the 917 K and a booklet signed by Herrmann and Attwood. Details in the press release after the jump with photos in the gallery below.
But notwithstanding the extra space afforded by the Cayenne sport-ute or the new Panamera four-door, most Porsche don't have a wealth of luggage space. Fortunately, Porsche Design has released a full line of luggage and travel accessories made especially for its sister-company's line-up.

Part of the Porsche Design Driver's Selection, the new Travel Collection offers choices of Ultralight polycarbonate hard-shell luggage, AluFrame wheeled pieces and leather Carfit baggage. They're all made to fit in the trunks of the 911, Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne or Panamera, and many of the hard-shell pieces can even be ordered to match standard Porsche exterior paint colors. To cap it off, there's extra accessories like coordinating wallets, jackets designed for the traveler and the requisite sunglasses for the road. Check 'em out in the gallery below, along with the details in the press release after the jump.

You'd expect a studio like Porsche Design to come out with the occasional driver's watch. But a diving watch is quite a different story. In fact, this is only the second time the studio has made one. The first was over 25 years ago, with the Ocean 2000, designed by company founder Prof. F.A. Porsche in 1983. The P'6780 is Porsche Design's innovative and rugged follow-up.

Capable of reaching depths up to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet), P'6780's party trick is actually quite functional: the stainless steel case that houses the movement hinges forward out of its titanium bracket (which in turn attaches to the rubber wrist strap), thereby insulating the case from shock and keeping the crown from being accidentally re-set.
Of course not. So while everyone else is going for blinged-out shiny this and sparkling that, Porsche Design has re-released its cutting-edge P'9522 mobile phone all in black.

The feature set is the same as the existing, award-winning P'9522 released last year, which means it's made of solid aluminum and packs fingerprint authentication, WiFi and GPS, to short-list just a few of its features. But instead of the shiny stuff, the special edition - mimicking the original Porsche Design Chronograph I and the instruments on competition-spec 911s - is decked out in the matte stuff, all without the need for a vinyl wrap and giving RIM a run for its nomenclature money.

It may be getting colder across the country, but in Porscheland, things are heating up. The German automaker just took the wraps off its ultimate tribute to sun and fun, the new Boxster Spyder, in Los Angeles, and its merchandising counterpart is gearing up for sunshine with its new collection of gear for the spring and summer.

The latest sport collection has items for the driver, runner, golfer, swimmer, sailor and tennis player, all made in collaboration with sportswear giant Adidas. Highlights include weatherproof jackets, shock-absorbing sneakers, and even the odd Bermuda or two. You can check it all out in the press release after the jump and in the high-res image gallery below. The collection is available from Porsche Design stores worldwide, and the best part is you don't have to own a Porsche to buy them (you little poseur, you!).

Gallery: Porsche Design Sport Spring/Summer 2010

[Source: Porsche Design]
Continue reading Porsche Design gears up for the sunshine with new driving and sportswear collection

Porsche Design gears up for the sunshine with new driving and sportswear collection originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Dec 2009 08:01:00 EST. Times are tough for the Porsche family. Amidst the merger with Volkswagen, their company just suffered a $6.6 billion loss. But we didn't think things were this bad for the descendants of Ferdinand Porsche until Bonhams announced they would be liquidating that family's watch collection to the highest bidder.

Okay, we're exaggerating just a bit. The Porsche family stands to make a lot of money out of the Volkswagen merger, and the collection is being auctioned off for charity. And while we have no idea what charity that is, we have to assume it's not the Porsche family themselves.

As it turns out, the family's interests extend beyond the automobile. Not only does their Porsche Design Group have its own range of watches, but some fourteen years ago they bought Eterna, one of the largest independent watchmakers in Switzerland. Eterna fabricates Porsche Design watches as well as their own brand, and several of the rarest examples will be included along with others among the 49 watches crossing the auction block on December 2 in London.

Among those pieces Bonhams is highlight are included a rare 18kt gold Porsche Design prototype and an Eterna presented to family scion Ferdinand Oliver Porsche on his 40th birthday, along with rare timepieces from Rolex and Omega as well as Panerai (which makes watches for arch-rival Ferrari), Jaeger LeCoultre (which partners with Aston Martin) and Breitling (in league with Bentley).
While the Porsche 911 stands as one of the most ubiquitous and storied sports cars of all time, another Porsche design was made popular by one particular individual.

Throughout the Eighties, Yoko Ono wore the original Porsche Design shades so often they became known as the Yoko Ono sunglasses. She wore them at press conferences, for photo shoots (including the cover of Rolling Stone magazine) and on the covers of her albums. Now the German carmaker's Austrian product design studio has brought the design back back as the P'8479.

The shield-style visor is supported by a Beta-Titanium frame secured by visible screws for an iconic retro look that may not be our cup of tea exactly, but we just hope their presence doesn't break up the VW merger like Yoko broke up The Beatles.

Gallery: Porsche Design P'8479 Yoko Ono sunglasses

[Source: Porsche Design]
