Some stereotypes are true. Men like V8s. Women like I4s. According to the third annual demographic study by TrueCar.com on the car buying habits of the sexes, men continue to fixate on size while women care about efficiency and price.

The No. 1 brand for women - the brand with the highest percentage of female buyers - was Mini at 46.2 percent. Nissan was No. 2 with 45.7 percent and Kia third with 45.6 percent.

Men, as expected, dominated the exotic brands with Ferrari sales being fueled by the most testosterone - 92.5 percent of buyers being male. Bentley was the No. 2 brand with 83.4 percent of its buyers being male and Maserati having 82.8 percent male buyers.

"The price point for many of the cars and crossovers women buyers wanted started at or below $25,000, while men tended to spend more money for their vehicles," said Kristen Andersson, TrueCar.com senior analyst in a news release. Furthermore, women focused on smaller and more fuel efficient vehicles while men gravitated toward fast exotic cars, big pickups or SUVs.

Indeed. The No. 1 car purchased by the highest majority of men was the Porsche 911. The car with the highest percentage of women buyers was the Volvo S40, with 57.9 percent of the customers buying it being female.
Continue reading Size matters for male and female car buyers

Size matters for male and female car buyers originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Apr 2012 13:30:00 EST.
What is thought to be a band of thieves broke into eight cars at a park-and-ride lot in Salem, New Hampshire. Then it is thought they went next door to Cars, Inc. and stole a Mercedes-Benz, a Land Rover and a 2003 Porsche 911. The Mercedes and Land Rover getaway drivers reportedly went on about their business quietly. The Porsche driver, on the other hand, decided to flaunt what he got: at 2 a.m. he drove eight miles over the border to Methuen, Massachusetts, pulled into the local police station and did donuts in their front lot.

But wait, there's more: he took off, entertained himself for two hours, then went back to the police station at 4 a.m. and whipped up a few more hot, rubbery circles. A police cruiser was on scene and gave chase, but the 911 pilot got away.

A little later in Lawrence, MA, two miles from Methuen, someone called police to report a rolled 911. The stolen wheels were recovered, the thief in question was not. We have no doubt the Methuen PD - once the screaming stops - is preparing to put that Porsche through a forensic and DNA investigation that would make CSI proud. Scroll down for the news report from WHDH.
Continue reading Thief steals Porsche 911, does donuts in police parking lot [w/video]

Thief steals Porsche 911, does donuts in police parking lot [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 11:01:00 EST.
Last week we brought you Inside Line's list of the 10 cars most likely to be owned by a women. The Volvo S40 came out on top among the ladies. But what's most likely to be owned by a guy? Minivans? Fuel-efficient hatchbacks? Hybrids?

No.

At the top of Inside Line's list is the very masculine, testosterone-oozing Ferrari 458 Italia. It should be no surprise that 95.3% of 458 owners are men. We sure would like to meet the other 4.7%.

Ahem. Anyway, in second place is the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, then the Audi R8, the Mercedes SLS AMG and then, at No. 5, the Ferrari California. So far, we've pretty much recited every male motorhead's ultimate wish list. Seriously, what self-respecting man doesn't put himself to sleep every night running through the gears of any of those cars?

At No. 6, is the perennial Porsche 911, then the Nissan GT-R at No. 7 with 87.9% male ownership. No. 8 is the obligatory GMC Sierra pickup closely followed by the Ford F-Series at No. 9. Rounding out the list at No. 10 is the consummate mid-life crisis Chevy Corvette with 86.9% male ownership.

So where does that leave the Ford F-650? Are there really that many women buying that monster?

Few rivalries are as heated as that between the Nissan GT-R and the Porsche 911. And with both models having recently been updated, Evo magazine has taken the updated GT-R and the new 911 Carrera S to the Bedford Autodrome for a little head-on-head action. And who better to put in front of the camera and behind the wheel than Tiff Needell, the longtime Fifth Gear co-host who's now doing a series of video tests for the magazine British enthusiasts love best.

Now if you're thinking that the GT-R really ought to be compared to the 911 Turbo and not the naturally aspirated 911 Carrera S, well, you're probably right. Particularly since Nissan hiked the price on its latest performance flagship to nearly $100,000. But Porsche hasn't released the turbocharged version of its latest 911, so the Carrera S will have to do. Skip past the break to see how they compare, as well as which one is Tiff's favorite.
Continue reading Tiff Needell pits latest Porsche 911 Carrera S against Nissan GT-R

Tiff Needell pits latest Porsche 911 Carrera S against Nissan GT-R originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Mar 2012 19:59:00 EST.
Many of the tuners here at the Geneva Motor Show have little to no restraint when it comes to styling, which is why we appreciate subtlety when we see it. Lumma Design, hailing from Winterlingen, Germany, offers an example of such restraint with its CLR 9 S based on the new 991 Porsche 911. The styling package includes a tasteful strip package, a new front clip with an integrated splitter and a three-piece spoiler at the rear. A new set of quad exhaust tips also peek out from the rear fascia.

The all-new 991 variant of the Porsche 911 has only been on sale for a few months, but renowned Porsche tuner Ruf is already hard at work applying its patented blend of power, handling and braking to the latest 911.

On hand at the Geneva Motor Show are two new 991-based Rufs, the Rt 35 Anniversary (green, above) and the RGT 8 (yellow). The Rt35 is a rolling celebration of Ruf's 35 years in business and beats Porsche to the punch by offering a twin turbo kit for the Carrera S, outputting 621 horsepower and an equally astounding 608 pound feet of torque through a standard seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Ruf isn't citing a 0-60 time, but claims the Rt35 tops out at a little over 205 mph.

The original RGT 8 debuted here in Geneva two years ago and shocked Porsche purists by packing a race-derived V8 where the flat-six would traditionally reside. This updated version based on the 991 uses a similar 4.5-liter V8 good for 543 hp and 368 lb-ft of twist, all routed through a proper six-speed manual gearbox.

Finally, Ruf has updated its flagship CTR 3 in a new Clubsport variant, with copious quantities of carbon fiber both inside and out and powered provided by a twin-turbo flat-six outputting 740 hp and 708 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed sequential gearbox puts the power down, further ensuring its status as a track machine that's barely suitable for a run to the corner store. Bonus Ruf porn in the video below.
Continue reading Ruf gets to work on the 991 Porsche 911, reveals new CTR 3 [w/video]

Ruf gets to work on the 991 Porsche 911, reveals new CTR 3 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 18:29:00 EST.
With the introduction of the new 991-series Porsche 911, a multitude of tuners have been hard at work over the last several months tweaking and customizing the latest iteration of Stuttgart's legendary rear-engined sports car. One of those tuners, TechArt, first previewed their take on the new Porsche 911 back in September, but they are now are ready to officially debut the car at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

TechArt has never been one to shy away from changing up the appearance of the Porsche 911 (the TechArt GTStreet RS we recently drove is evidence of that), and the same goes for the newest model. The German tuner has given the car a new look with a more aggressive front fascia and integrated splitter, a fixed rear spoiler and lightweight 20 and 21-inch wheel options. An upgraded exhaust system is also available, as well as custom interior pieces like a three-spoke steering wheel and carbon fiber trim.

We'll have a closer look at the Techart Porsche 911 when we hit the show floor next week, and we'll be sure to bring you plenty of photos. Until then, check out the gallery above or hit the jump for the official press release from TechArt.
Continue reading TechArt previews new Porsche 911 upgrades ahead of Geneva

TechArt previews new Porsche 911 upgrades ahead of Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 15:28:00 EST.
Yes, that is a Porsche 911. Yes, that is fresh concrete. No, this is not some uber-powerful aftermarket-tuned car that just liquified the San Francisco pavement underneath - the Porsche was driven into this predicament.

Now before we start passing judgment on this poor soul, a driver who has so obviously burned more than his share of karmic bridges, let's just pause to thank him or her, both for providing us the enjoyment of this video and also for upholding certain reputations.

And let us also remember that the next time we're stuck in traffic because of road construction, to just put some Michael McDonald on the stereo and chill out, rather than trying to pass everyone by driving through the construction lane and getting stuck in fresh concrete.

If you were in the market for a Porsche 911 that could play dual roles as track toy and daily driver, the GT3 always fit the bill. And it was a given that you'd find a proper manual gearbox between the seats. According to the latest report, that might not be the case in due time.

InsideLine sat down with the 911's product chief, August Achleitner, who confirmed that the next GT3 is on the way and that Porsche's motorsports division is testing both a manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. However, only one gearbox will make it to production in 2013 and Achleitner believes the PDK will win out.

Whether that decision will be limited to Europe, while a manual option would still be offered in the States (similar to what BMW is doing with the M5) isn't clear, but Achleitner contends that putting the PDK in the GT3 is only logical, particularly given that less than one-third of 911s are fitted with a stick shift.
2013 Porsche 911 GT3 won't be available with a manual gearbox? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Feb 2012 18:46:00 EST. The 2012 Porsche 911 has been soaking up its share of plaudits, now its ready to soak up its share of your bank account. The "longer, lower, wider, 100-pounds lighter, faster" 911 has finally reached dealerships in its two initial guises: 350-horsepower Carrera and 400-horsepower Carrera S.

The entry model will need $82,100 of your hard earned cash, which is a $4,300 premium over the 2011 Carrera MSRP. It takes another $14,300 to affix an S to the rear end. Those prices don't include the $950 destination charge, but you wouldn't let such a tifle stand between you and history anyway, right? You'll find a press release with a few more details after the jump, then we can all turn our attention to the 911 Turbo.
Continue reading 2012 Porsche 911 hits U.S. dealerships

2012 Porsche 911 hits U.S. dealerships originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 08 Feb 2012 09:29:00 EST.
Mercedes-Benz has no interest in pursuing BMW down the diesel performance rabbit hole, according to Autocar. The publication spoke with Ola Kallenius, chairman of the board of management at Mercedes-Benz AMG, who said the company explored the idea of performance diesels in the past and found the concept too fraught with compromises to be worthwhile. Kallenius said gasoline engines have obvious advantages when it comes to weight, sound, agility and response. The AMG guru also pointed to the fact that the company's modern performance engines have borrowed considerable diesel technology, including direct injection and turbocharging, to reach their current power and efficiency levels.

In a separate report, Kallenius was quoted as saying it would be wise to grow the AMG brand after the success of the SLS AMG coupe and roadster. Rumors have indicated a machine capable of giving the Porsche 911 a run for its money around the world's race tracks may be in the cards, but Kallenius said no final decision has been made about growing the performance arm's ranks just yet. Still, the boss didn't outright nix the idea, so there's some glimmer of possibility there, however thin.
Mercedes says no to hi-po diesels, may greenlight 911-fighter originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 19:01:00 EST.
The Motor City has been blessed with unseasonably warm weather and mostly clear skies this week, so consider it fortuitous that Porsche has gifted the Detroit Auto Show with the global premiere of its 911 Carrera Cabriolet.

This topless 911 carries with it a unique top mechanism that comes off like a particularly snug-fitting canvas lid that follows the roofline of the coupe beautifully - Porsche says it carries rigid panels like a folding hardtop along with its fabric top. The goal? Increased security and noise abatement along with improved styling. The new power retract cap can be raised or lowered at speeds up to 31 miles per hour and also includes a novel power wind deflector that can deploy in seconds.

The 3.4-liter Carrera reaches 62 miles per hour in 5.0 seconds with the seven-speed manual (4.8 seconds with the PDK and 4.6 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono) thanks to its 350-horsepower 3.4-liter flat six. Like the coupe, the Carrera S gets a displacement bump to 3.8 liters and a commensurate rise in power to 400 horsepower. 0-62 mph is dispatched in 4.7 seconds with the seven-speed manual and as little as 4.3 seconds with the PDK Sport Chrono. Check out some rolling footage of the Cabrio after the jump and the official press release.
Continue reading 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet brings warm weather to Detroit [w/video]

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet brings warm weather to Detroit [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 12:58:00 EST.
We think there would be considerably more car-themed furniture in the world were it not for the institution of marriage. While we would have no problem flopping the tail section of a 2005 Porsche 911 in the living room in place of an entertainment center and TV stand, something tells us that would be a hard sell to our significant others. While Porsche Design does make some beautiful pieces that we're sure our better halves wouldn't mind owning, we can't see them cottoning on to the efforts of one enterprising individual, who has taken to manufacturing custom TV stands from the rear haunches of certain Porsche models. The entertainment centers apparently use genuine parts from the German manufacturer, right down to the wheels and brake calipers on the rear wheels.

Buyers can order up any color they so please, and the display will accommodate up to a 42-inch flat-screen television that rises from the cars innards at the push of a button. Would we have one if money were no object? Probably not, but there's a chance we'd happily park our posteriors on a '59 Cadillac couch. Hit the jump to check out the Porsche display stand after the jump.
Continue reading The real Porsche Design entertainment center

The real Porsche Design entertainment center originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Dec 2011 15:15:00 EST.
Testing the next 911 is the gig of a lifetime, but as this development video from Porsche proves, it's still a job.

The Tangent Vector film crew was given behind-the-scenes access to the development of the 991, and the resulting ten-minute mini-documentary shows the length Porsche's engineers will go to make sure the automaker's latest and greatest arse-engined flagship is ready for the rigors of daily life. In this case, "daily life" for the development crew involves traversing the Arctic in -40 degree temperatures and keeping things on the road during a sandstorm.
Though the modern Porsche 911 has retained much of the same style as the original, there's still something about a classic Carrera that attracts a certain breed of enthusiast. That's what led to the creation of the Singer 911, and what has apparently motivated a German tuning outfit called DP Motorsport to retrofit a 1973 model to lightweight specification.

The modifications start with a complete carbon fiber rebody. The front and rear bumpers, hood, fenders, doors and whale tail have all been replaced with the lightweight weave, while the windows and lamp covers have all been ditched in favor of lighter-weight replacements. The result is a 870-kilogram (1,918-pound) curb weight instead of 1,080 to 1,335 kg (2,380-2,943 lbs) stock. But that's only half of the less weight, more power ratio equation.

DP Motorsport has also fitted a 3.6-liter flat-six with 310 horsepower, enhanced by a new carburetor and filters, fitted to a G-50 gearbox and limited-slip differential. It rides on 16-inch Fuchs wheels on a coilover suspension with adjustable stabilizers, and they've fitted the brakes from a 964. The interior has likewise been lightened, fitted with bucket seats and swathed in grippy black Alcantara.

In short, the DP 911 is like the air-cooled original, only more so. Check it out in the high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading DP Motorsport drapes 1973 Porsche 911 in carbon fiber gorgeousness

DP Motorsport drapes 1973 Porsche 911 in carbon fiber gorgeousness originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 Nov 2011 16:57:00 EST.
Of all the things one hopes won't happen in a race car, losing a right rear tire at 180 mph on the high banks at Daytona is likely at the top of the list. That's exactly what happened to Dr. Jim Norman in his Porsche 911 recently. The pirouettes that resulted are the stuff of legend. Norman received a front-row seat to his machine's nose and tail swapping places at least four times before coming to a stop facing the correct direction down pit lane. Miraculously, neither Norman nor his vehicle were seriously hurt in the dust-up.

Perhaps even more surprisingly, no one collected Norman as he went all Tasmanian devil on the road course. Another 911 directly behind Norman's managed to avoid the spinning piece of German engineering, though that whole lift-off oversteer thing caused that vehicle to do its best impression of a tornado as well. Hit the jump to see both videos for yourself.
Continue reading Blowing a tire at 180 mph at Daytona is a wild ride

Blowing a tire at 180 mph at Daytona is a wild ride originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 Nov 2011 15:00:00 EST.
You might not have heard of RAUH-Welt, a small Japanese tuner that builds custom RWB Porsche models, but the company's popularity has blown up in the past year in part due to the obsessed boys over at Speedhunters.

Previously, RAUH-Welt RWB Porsches have been the sole domain of Japan, but here at this week's SEMA show in Las Vegas, the company has unveiled their two latest cars, both of which were constructed here in the United States. The car pictured here is owned by former 0-60 Magazine editor-in-chief Brian Scotto. The white 911 was built in part to promote Ken Block's new Hoonigan brand (Scotto runs it), so we get the feeling that we'll be seeing more of this car on the interwebs in the near future.
RAUH-Welt debuts first American-built RWB Porsche originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Nov 2011 13:59:00 EST.
If you're a Porsche fan, there were enough precious metals at this weekend's Rennsport Reunion IV to put a flutter of butterflies in the sturdiest of stomachs. The company naturally made sure to capture the moment, and just as naturally, it wasn't any mere point-and-shoot affair.

For a gorgeous time-lapse look at how 40 vintage Porsche racers (including 911s, 935s, 917s, 962s and 956s) posed for the camera in the California sun, the rest of the story is in the video after the jump.
Continue reading Making the Porsche Rennsport Reunion family photo

Making the Porsche Rennsport Reunion family photo originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 12:30:00 EST.
Rennsport Reunion IV at Laguna Seca is 5,825 miles from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, but that didn't stop the automaker from shipping some of its most prized possessions all the way to California to show thousands of its loyal enthusiasts. Tucked safely in a permanent garage at the track, with special lighting and placards to help tell the story, we found more than a dozen historically significant Porsche models displayed chronologically from 1964 to present day.

While each is worthy of an hour walk-around by itself, we really liked the 1973 Porsche 911 RSR in Martini livery, the 1998 Porsche 911 GT1 98 LM that won Le Mans outright in 1998, the 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup that was driven by Jeff Zwart up Pikes Peak in 2010 (and set the 2WD Time Attack class record) and the new Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0, which is still covered with the rubber marks from its last ALMS race at this circuit.

Special thanks to Autoblog's esteemed photographer, Drew Phillips, who set his alarm early to be able to capture each of the cars before the crowds enveloped them. Enjoy.
Rennsport Reunion IV: Significant Porsche 911 race cars on display originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 16 Oct 2011 14:01:00 EST.
