<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/">Porsche</a> has become the latest automaker to take advantage of clever projection technology. The automaker worked up a quick presentation for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/porsche/911/">2013 911 Carrera 4S</a> to show off a bit of "motionless driving." The display tracks the sports car from production to back-road caning and city-center cruising, displaying a variety of exterior color choices and wheel options without resorting to a two-dimensional video.<br />

This isn't the first time we've seen an automaker use its new product as a projection screen. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/16/watch-subarus-awesome-projection-mapped-2014-forester-intro/">Subaru</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/12/video-2012-hyundai-accent-is-off-the-wall/">Hyundai</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/12/13/watch-a-lamborghini-reventon-look-fast-without-moving/">Lamborghini</a> and others have all done the same, and the trick never fails to be visually interesting.<br />

As you may recall, we got to play with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2012/11/02/2013-porsche-911-carrera-4s-first-drive-review/">2013 911 Carrera 4S</a> back in November and found the machine to be a better daily driver than its rear-wheel drive counterpart. According to the Porsche, the 4,784-pound, 500-horsepower Porsche Cayenne Turbo gets from zero to sixty in 4.4 seconds. The 3,219-pound, 385-hp 911 Carrera 4S with PDK takes 4.3 seconds to run the same distance. With such remarkably close acceleration times, <em>Autocar</em> wanted to see if the Cayenne Turbo could hang with the 911 around Millbrook's 1.39-kilometer Outer Handling Circuit. <br />On the surface, it would be difficult to find two machines that share less in common than the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/21/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-porsche-911-carrera-4s/">2009 Porsche 911</a> and the latest <a href="http://www.ski-doo.com/en-US/Snowmobiles/MXZ/Overview.htm?Sled=MXZX">Ski-Doo MX Z X</a> snowmobile. But dig a little deeper (into their engine bays) and things start to show a few similarities, most notably the use of direct injection. After taking a little detour explaining how direct injection came about in Germany during World War II, the scribes at <em>Winding Road</em> put the two DI machines up against each other for some impromptu non-instrumented drag racing. <br /><br />In one lane, we have the twin-cylinder, two-stroke engine in the Ski-Doo that displaces 600cc and sends 120 horsepower to the single studded rear track. Across the aisle sits a 3.8-liter flat-six engine from Porsche that puts out 385 raging ponies and sends power to all four wheels. Surprisingly, the two heavyweights proved to be evenly matched in straight-line acceleration when each was placed in its proper element. <br />A 1980 Porsche 911 SC Targa was deposited in my driveway during the spring of 1999. A good friend left it in my care while a contractor remodeled his garage. I'd never driven a Porsche, let alone a 911, but I would tend his car for three full months. With a 3.0-liter flat-6 hung way out back, the 180-horsepower engine was noisy, its open chassis flexible, and the whole thing smelled like dirty motor oil. Regardless of its rudimentary technology and semi-backwards handling tendencies, it was an absolute challenging thrill to drive. One decade later, d&eacute;j&agrave; vu, as a brand-new 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S is sitting in the driveway. A direct descendant of the classic SC, it represents the pinnacle of Porsche engineering and the latest iteration of the rear-engine sports car.
