Severe thunderstorms devastated fans hanging around trying to enjoy the post-race atmosphere at the Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania over the weekend. The NASCAR Pocono 400 Sprint Cup race itself had been halted 98 laps into the 160-lap event because of rain, and track officials twice warned spectators that severe thunderstorms were on the way and to find shelter.

The greening of motorsport continues with NASCAR, which has a program to plant 20 acres of trees at race tracks every year. Individual tracks are doing their own things as well, with Pocono Raceway the latest to go a step further: The New York Times reports that it is planting 25 acres of solar cells, equaling about 40,000 panels, to create three megawatts of its own power.

The only green typically associated with NASCAR is the cubic dollars spent every year by fans on tickets and merchandise and what the automakers spend to support their teams. On the technology side, this is a series that still uses carburetors and only recently switched to unleaded gas. However, NASCAR has decided to take a tentative step into the future.
