Yesterday, we got to see the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, and today we have video of one of the missions. But wait just a second - this isn't a video game, it's real life.

An in-car video camera has captured footage of two unnamed Brazilian police officers going after some bad guys on a remote runway, Cops-style. One officer can be seen firing a machine gun, just before the driver rams the wing of a plane in an effort to prevent it from taking off.

According to the Associated Press, a Brazilian federal police spokesman indicates that the pilot and four others were arrested, but nobody was hurt in the takedown. The video does appear to show plenty of contraband electronics that were seized from the alleged smugglers, however.

Good brakes may be less important in stock car racing than in other forms of motorsport, but on a plane, they're pretty darn important. That's what Rick Hendrick found out - the hard way - last night when his private jet crashed off the runway in Key West, Florida.

Hendrick's Gulfstream G150, registered to Jimmie Johnson (one of Hendrick's star drivers), slid straight off the runway and almost into the water when its brakes apparently failed upon landing. On board together with the NASCAR team owner were his wife Linda and two pilots. Fortunately, CNN reports that no one was seriously injured.

The incident must have been especially traumatic for the Hendricks, who lost seven members of their family - including their son Ricky who drove for and ran the team with his dad - in a 2004 plane crash. However, the Hendricks aren't the only ones to have been affected by plane crashes: Fellow NASCAR team owner Jack Roush has survived two such incidents, while off-road racer Rick Huseman and his brother Jeff were killed in a small plane crash in California a couple of weeks ago.

If bad news comes in threes, we don't want to know when the other shoe will drop. Shortly following the news of Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon's death yesterday comes the equally sad development that off-road racer Rick Huseman was killed when the small aircraft in which he was flying crashed near Barstow, California. Huseman, 38, was the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series Pro 4 Unlimited Series champion just last year.

As if the tragedy weren't enough for the Huseman family to absorb, reports indicate that Rick's brother Jeff was also killed in the crash alongside an as-yet unidentified pilot.

According to Fox affiliate WPMT, the 38-year-old Toyota driver and his brother were flying back from Las Vegas (oddly where Wheldon was killed the same day) when their Beech 33 Bonanza airplane crashed into a canyon while attempting to make an emergency landing. The crash is under investigation.

Our condolences go out to the Huseman family and friends, as we hope this is the last such bit of bad news we have to report to you for a long time.
Off-road racer Rick Huseman killed in plane crash originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 10:29:00 EST.
NASCAR titan Jack Roush appears to have survived his second plane crash. Roush was piloting his company's Raytheon/Beechcraft Premier jet when something went wrong on the approach to Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin last night. According to reports, Roush's plane appeared to come in too low on landing approach, and a last-second correction caused the plane's nose to dip and touch the ground. On impact, the plane spun around and the tale section separated from the rest of the aircraft. Both Roush and a female employee, Brenda K. Strickland, were able to walk away from the crash, though they did sustain injuries. There was no one else onboard.

Roush, 68, was taken to a local hospital for injuries he sustained during the incident and was first listed in serious condition. Since then, his status has been downgraded to critical. However, according to Roush Fenway Racing, Roush is expected to make a full recovery, even though some surgery is expected as a result of his mishap.

This marks the second time in 10 years that Roush has run into trouble in the pilot's seat. In 2002, he crash-landed a small craft into a pond in Alabama. Hit the jump to see an ESPN report on the incident. Thanks for the tip, Martin B!
A small, twin-engined Cessna crashed this morning in an East Palo Alto neighborhood, killing all three passengers on board. According to reports, the plane was owned by Doug Bourn, a senior electrical engineer for Tesla Motors, and all three occupants were high-ranking officials at the electric car company. Authorities have not yet named the deceased.

"[The plane] hit a power line. Then it exploded... then half hit the next door neighbor's house and the other half hit across the street. We were right in the road," said neighborhood resident Heather Starnes. No injuries were reported on the ground, though a number of homes were damaged, including one currently being used as a daycare facility.

The National Weather Service had issued a dense fog advisory for the Bay Area earlier in the morning that was in effect until 10 a.m. A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said the "decision [to take off] would have been up to the pilot." We'll update with an official comment from Tesla when we hear back.
Nine other skydivers aboard the plane, a Pilatus PC-6, were fortunately able to escape before the crash. While Honda has extended its condolences to the victims' families, the automaker was apparently in no way connected to the incident. The sky divers in Honda's commercial and the production crew had all moved on by then, but it's a little creepy to think of what would've happened if this tragedy had occurred on live television. The crash occurred in Toledo, Spain after the aircraft lost a wing, the cause of which is not yet known. Thanks to Satish for the tip.

[Source: BBC]

Continue reading Plane used in Honda skydiving ad crashed next flight

Plane used in Honda skydiving ad crashed next flight originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Jun 2008 10:31:00 EST. Aboard the plane were Apex Motorsport team boss Richard Lloyd, and former British Touring Car Championship driver David Leslie (pictured). Lloyd, who owned the plane, raced in the British Saloon Car Championship in the '70s, and then in the World Sportscar Championship with Porsches. Leslie was a long time driver in the BTCC for teams like BMW, Mazda and Proton.

Both men were killed when the plane experienced engine trouble just after takeoff and plummeted into a housing estate. Also killed were the plane's two pilots and an Apex Motorsport engineer who had been with the company just 12 days. They were headed to the South of France to set up the Apex Motorsport Jaguar that will be racing in the FIA GT3 Championship. Our condolences go out to the families of everyone on board.

[Source: The Times]
Cessna crash kills two ex-Touring Car drivers originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 31 Mar 2008 15:02:00 EST. The husband of NASCAR executive Lesa France Kennedy died in a tragic plane crash along with another long-time NASCAR employee after their twin-engine Cesna 310 began emitting smoke in the cabin. Dr. Bruce Kennedy was attempting to land the disabled plane at Sanford-Orlando Airport but never got there, as the aircraft crashed into a house. Several people on the ground were injured or killed in the accident, which is obviously casting more pain on the France family and NASCAR.

[Source: AutoWeek]
Another tragedy befalls the France family originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 10:32:00 EST.
