Nissan is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Pete Brock's famous toppling of the Germans and Brits at the SCCA Championships at Road Atlanta in 1970, and with it comes the BRE 370Z, a liveried nod to Nissan's storied racing heritage.

Coated in Brock's iconic red, white and blue paint scheme, the BRE 370Z made its debut yesterday at Road Atlanda during the Classic Motorsports Mitty, and comes packing enough kit to make it eligible to run in the SCCA's T2 championship. Nissan plans to show off the Z across the country this summer, including a stint at ZCon this July in Nashville, but don't expect the tri-colored coupe to hit dealers anytime soon - it's strictly a show car for now.

Bone up on your BRE history and get all the details in the press release after the jump.

BRE Nismo Z getting painted for the Walter Mitty Challenge - Click above for high-res image gallery

It looks like there will be more than one car showing up the Walter Mitty Challenge at Road Atlanta next month wearing the colors of Pete Brock's BRE racing team. Just days after Mazda announced that it had prepared a BRE-liveried MX-5 for the Playboy MX-5 Cup, Nissan has announced that it is working on a Nismo 370Z with a similar color scheme.

The Nissan is, of course, a descendant of the Datsun 240Z John Morton drove to BRE's first SCCA National Championship in 1970. While the Miata got a very literal interpretation of the original BRE paint job, Brock has apparently worked with painters at Nissan to produce a modern iteration. The Z will be revealed at a special dinner at Road Atlanta on April 29 to kick off the big weekend of vintage racing.

The car has been built to SCCA T2 specs, and plans call for it to do some racing at Z Club events and SCCA regionals this summer.

Before landmark films American Graffiti and Star Wars, George Lucas was just another film student at the University of Southern California. During his time at USC, Lucas and 13 other film students put together an eight-minute-long film called 1:42:08. The title contains no words, and the film has no dialog. What does appear on the screen is racing legend Peter Brock as he speeds through Willow Springs Raceway near LA. The movie's sound track? The sound of a Lotus 23 race car at full throttle. Hit the jump to see Lucas' 1966 short film for yourself. It's no Empire Strikes Back, but it's damn good cinematography. If you aren't a big Lucas fan, there's still Peter Brock and a Lotus 23. It's a win-win.

[Source: YouTube]
Continue reading VIDEO: George Lucus and Peter Brock in 1:42:08

VIDEO: George Lucus and Peter Brock in 1:42:08 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 11:31:00 EST. During his illustrious career, Brock's leadership of the Holden Dealer Team (HDT) racing outfit also saw several modified high-performance roadgoing Commodores hit the market before the group was disbanded in the late '80s.

Now, the owner of one of the largest collection of Brock Commodores in Australia plans to revive the HDT nameplate in Brock's honor. Queensland mining contractor Peter Champion currently owns over 40 Brock Commodores and now wants to build the kind of car Peter Brock would have built today using the latest VE Commodore. Champion and Brock had been friends for over a decade and even talked about releasing a new model months before his untimely death in a car crash during a race last September.

The new cars will likely be based on the VE SS, the same car on which the upcoming Pontiac G8 is based. The cars won't have any mechanical modifications, although it will be offered if customers seek it, says Champion. Instead, the new HDT cars will receive bodykits and wheels designed to match the original racing Commodores from Brock's era.

While driving his Daytona Coupe, Peter Brock collided with a tree at speed, wounding his co-driver and sustaining mortal injuries. Currently, no information is available about the cause of the crash, although Mick Hone, Brock's co-driver is in stable condition.

Brock became a household name in his home country of Australia while leading the Holden factory team to nine Bathurst 1000 victories during the 70's and 80's. Brock retired from racing in 1994, only to return three years later, running two more Bathurst's and a number of enthusiast events, like the Targa West.

For a full synopsis of Brock's life and legend, follow this link to the Wikipedia entry.

Our heartfelt condolences to his family, his friends and the nation that bore him.

[Thanks to our tippers, Drew and Supercujo]
Aussie racing legend Peter Brock dies in home country originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Sep 2006 02:19:00 EST.
