Gooding & Company has revealed the highlights of its consignments for its Pebble Beach auction during the action-packed Monterey weekend. At the top of the list is the classic 1955 Maserati A6G/54 Frua Berlinetta currently owned by Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay. This Maserati, the show car from the 1955 Paris Auto Salon, features Frau coachwork, won Best in Show at the Salon Privé, and is expected to fetch between $1.5 and 2 million.

No less prestigious is the 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Stelvio convertible that belonged to Prince Louis Napoleon of France, grandson of Emperor Napoleon I and noted Bugatti collector of the time. Supercharged from the factory, the stunning two-tone droptop is projected to sell for $1.3 to 1.6 million.

Finally, an original 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra is on the docket, with pre-sale estimates at $750,000 - $950,000.
RM Auctions only just finished pulling in record numbers at its event in Monaco, but it's already gearing up for the next event set to take place during Pebble Beach weekend in Monterey, California.

Headlining the Canadian specialist auctioneer's catalog for the August event are the rare 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Berlinetta and the timelessly elegant 1938 Talbot-Lago Teardrop Coupe pictured together above.

Considered by some to be one of the world's most desirable Ferrari classic road car, this particular 410 Sport Berlinetta is the second of just four built and the only fixed-roof coupe. Chassis 0594 CM features bodywork by Scaglietti in ivory with blue leather. It will be making its first appearance both in North America and at auction, having only traded hands a few times between private European collectors until now.

The Talbot, meanwhile, is one of only five of its kind built (of four remaining) and the only such coupe built upon a four-seat chassis. The winner of several concours, this particular example of French art deco in motion is expected to fetch $2.5 to $3.2 million. Scroll down for the full press release and peruse the high-resolution images of the two cars together in Monaco for a sneak preview.
Continue reading Elegant classic Ferrari and Talbot-Lago to headline at Pebble Beach

Elegant classic Ferrari and Talbot-Lago to headline at Pebble Beach originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 May 2012 08:28:00 EST.
Jay Leno had a very special guest stop by his garage recently. Peter Mullin and his Pebble Beach-winning 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne took the time to visit the comedian and car enthusiast for a brief spell. It's no secret Leno is a fan of '30s French vehicles, and the Aerodyne holds a special place in his heart. The vehicle was a marvel of innovation when it debuted, featuring a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder sleeve-valve engine, a mechanized retractable hardtop sun roof and an interior that could have only been designed by a Frenchman.

Leno and Mullin spend plenty of time discussing the vehicle's origin as well as Voisin's colorful past. The engineer began his career designing aircraft, and claimed he was the first person in history to successfully engage in powered flight. He took off, flew and carefully landed his plane 18 months after the Wright brothers sailed along in Kitty Hawk, but received no recognition for his accomplishments.
Even though "recession" and "double-dip" are familiar to anyone au courant with headlines, to the bidders at Pebble Beach auctions, the first is a lexicological sibling of "recede" and the second is dessert. That's why Gooding & Company was able to make the till ring like a fire alarm again his year, selling 106 of 127 lots for more than $78 million and setting 19 records for cars sold at auction.

One of those lots was a 1921 Bentley 3-LItre, Chassis #3, and the oldest production Bentley in existence. Follow the jump for the story behind it...
Continue reading The story behind the 1921 Bentley 3-Litre, the world's oldest production Bentley

The story behind the 1921 Bentley 3-Litre, the world's oldest production Bentley originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 09 Oct 2011 12:02:00 EST.
Justin Bell and eBay Motors have teamed up for a new web-based car show called, fittingly enough, "The World's Fastest Car Show." The premise is pretty straight-forward, with Bell taking to the wheel of some piece of drool-worthy metal in the first half of the show before heading off to an event in the latter half. The inaugural episode features a stint in the delicious Ford Mustang Boss 302 on Mulholland Drive as well as a stop in at Pebble Beach for a peak at the concept lawn.

Bell spends some time with a variety of concepts before deciding that the electrified Porsche 918 RSR is the belle of that particular ball. Race fans will likely recognize Bell as the same champion race driver who has campaigned at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA GT series.
General Motors wowed the crowds in Monterey this year with the Cadillac Ciel Concept. In addition to being a larger-than life convertible, the vehicle featured a level of attention to detail that hasn't been seen from the Wreath and Crest in over a century. That includes the beautiful olive wood interior. The good people at Cool Hunting recently sat down with GM Design to discover exactly what went into crafting the intricate pieces. Their story is more interesting than we thought the assembly of an interior could be, so interesting in fact that we went back to GM to get some more images of the process.

As it turns out, the interior wood trim was hewn from a 300-year-old olive tree that fell in a storm just outside of Naples, Italy. The tree was shipped to a Pennsylvania woodyard where it was then sectioned and kiln-dried. That's where the designers from General Motors caught up with it and sent the 30-inch wide planks through a planer from the 1940s, then sanded and arranged them on a gantry, and then photographed the planks so that their unique grains could be recreated in a special computer program. From there, the chunks were sent to 3D Mass Design and Engineering, where they were cut to GM specifications and glued into their final configurations. Then, Metalcrafters in Fountain Valley, California took on the task of test-fitting and applying the final stain and finish.

How's that for craftsmanship?
Meet the tree Cadillac used to make the Ciel Concept's gorgeous wood interior originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Sep 2011 17:28:00 EST.
The Cadillac Ciel concept is a convertible showstopper that wowed crowds at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Not surprisingly, Jay Leno managed to secure some talking time with General Motors VP of Global Design Ed Wellburn, and the two chatted about the ultimate Art and Science-mobile while Leno got a look at some of its features.

The Ciel concept is powered by a 425-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that's paired with a lithium-ion battery pack powering an electric motor. Basically, it's one of the best-looking hybrid vehicles on the planet at the moment, and it's even more intriguing when Wellburn shows off the rear power suicide doors.

It may be wearing a different badge, but Cadillac has seemingly built a modern-day homage to the fourth-generation Lincoln Continental. Click past the jump to see what we're talking about.
Continue reading Jay Leno and GM design boss Ed Welburn peruse the Cadillac Ciel concept

Jay Leno and GM design boss Ed Welburn peruse the Cadillac Ciel concept originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 14:58:00 EST.
Pebble Beach enjoyed a visit by a very special member of the Ford stable last week. Lincoln, along with the Edsel and Eleanor Ford house, displayed Edsel Bryant Ford's freshly-restored 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster at the Monterey Concours d'Elegance.

Inspired by a visit to Europe in 1932 and penned by none other than E.T. Gregorie, Ford chief designer at the time, the Roadster began life as a 1934 Model 40 frame before going under the knife for substantial revisions. Stretched a full inch over factory dimensions and saddled substantially lower to the ground, the vehicle boasts a rear-pitched cockpit, long nose and custom aluminum bodywork. A classic Ford Flathead V8 powers the rear wheels.

After Edsel passed away in 1943, the vehicle made a few scant appearances around the country before vanishing. It surfaced again at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in 1999 and sold to a collector for a heady $1.76 million. When the collector died, the car was returned to the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House before receiving a full restoration to return it to its former glory. Hit the jump for a video of the car's unveiling and for the official press release.
Continue reading Edsel Ford's restored 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster struts its stuff at Pebble Beach [w/video]

Edsel Ford's restored 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster struts its stuff at Pebble Beach [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 15:30:00 EST. For those car enthusiasts interested more in modern sheetmetal than pre-war brass, Pebble Beach still has you covered. Near the main entrance of the show is the concept car lawn, showcasing a collection of modern concepts and supercars.

This year featured many of the cars that were only recently introduced in Monterey this past weekend, including the Lotus Evora GTE Road Car Concept and the Cadillac Ciel Concept. Recently making their North American debuts, the Lamborghini Aventador, SSC Tuatara, BMW 328 Hommage Concept, and the 2012 BMW M5 were also on display. Our favorite of the group, however, was the modern-meets-vintage Mercedes-Benz F-Cell Roadster.

Prices for vintage Ferraris have escalated the last few years, with the more expensive models breaking records for the price of a car sold at auction. A 1961 Ferrari California Spyder sold for more than $10 million in 2008, and a 1957 Ferrari 250 TR went for more than $12 million in 2009. When auction house Gooding announced that it would be selling the recently restored 1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype at this past weekend's Pebble Beach sale, we had a feeling that the record would be broken once again.

Our hunch was correct, as a final bid of $14.9 million was offered for the car at Friday night's auction. Taking into account Gooding's ten percent selling fee, the final price rang in at an astounding $16.39 million.

In addition to the 250 TR, Gooding sold six additional cars over the million dollar mark including a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California ($3.355 million), a 1963 Shelby Cobra 289 Factory Team Car ($2.285 million) and a 1953 Ferrari 375 Vignale Coupe ($2.2 million). You can read more about the record-breaking auction in Gooding's press release after the jump.
Continue reading 1957 Ferrari 250 TR Prototype sells for record $16.39 million at Gooding's Pebble Beach auction

1957 Ferrari 250 TR Prototype sells for record $16.39 million at Gooding's Pebble Beach auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 13:30:00 EST.
Nobody can throw an anniversary party like the folks at Pebble Beach. To celebrate 50 years of the Ferrari 250 GTO, the world's most famous classic car show convened an incredible collection of Enzo's most coveted creation. And what a gathering it was. More than half of the 39 250 GTOs in existence were on display - the official number quoted was 22, although we could only count 21. The line of cars literally stretched farther than our cameras could capture. Factoring in the going rate of $25 million for a 250 GTO, the collection of Ferraris represented more than half a billion dollars worth of Pininfarina sheet metal and V12 engines.

Some of the more notable 250 GTOs present:

1961 Ferrari 250 GT Sperimentale, chassis 2643GT: This is regarded as the 250 GTO prototype, being the first Ferrari to combine the 250 SWB chassis and the race-spec 3.0L V12. The car raced at Le Mans in 1961 and at Daytona in 1962 with Stirling Moss behind the wheel.

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis 3223GT: This is the first official 250 GTO built. The car has several distinctive features including mis-matched headlights that were thrown on the car during a race at Daytona to help the drivers see the wall on the banking at night. This car was selected as the best in class.

1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis 3705GT:This 250 GTO has one of the best racing histories, finishing first in class at the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans, second overall. The car won every race it entered in 1965.

1964 Ferrari 250 GTO/64, chassis 5571GT:The first of three Series II 250 GTOs that features the lower and shorter Pininfarina body. The car raced at Sebring and Le Mans and was driven to victory at Daytona by Phil Hill.

The judges at this year's 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance have been searching all day to find this year's 'Best in Show', and they have finally come up with a winner. Peter Mullin's 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne earned the title after being named the best car in the 1932-1937 European Classic category. Yes, the same Peter Mullin of the renowned Mullin Automotive Museum.

Haven't heard of Voisin? Founded by Gabriel Voisin, one of the leading European engineers and aerodynamicists at the turn of the 20th century, the company first manufactured airplanes before building automobiles after World War I. Their debut car, the C-2, was launched at the Paris motor show in 1920.

The C-25 was unveiled more than a decade later at the Paris Motor Show, featuring a 3.0-liter inline-6 producing just over 100 horsepower. Three design variants were made including the Cimier, Clariere and our featured example, the Aerodyne. Just 28 examples of the C-25 were ever produced, making it a very rare and desirable car.

Shelby SuperCars (SSC) first showed off its forthcoming supercar, the Tuatara, last month in Shanghai, and now we've gotten our first look at the car here in Monterey. The Tuatara (pronounced twu‐tar‐ah), was unveiled earlier today on the concept car lawn at Pebble Beach.

Designed by Jason Castriota of Ferrari P4/5 fame, the Tuatara is SSC's second supercar. While the car you see here is a design model, the production version will feature a bespoke twin-turbo 7.0-liter V8 producing 1,350 horsepower, a carbon fiber sub-frame chassis, and one-piece carbon fiber wheels. While the car seen here lacks a full interior and isn't a complete runner, the design has undeniable presence, with a futuristic yet organic look that is miles ahead of its predecessor, which looked far more kit-car than supercar. What's more, the engine is said to be an all-new creation, it won't be General Motors-based like its forebearer.

We caught up with company founder Jerod Shelby, who informed us he already has five pre-orders for the car, which will be built in Washington state. Shelby is hoping to build about 16 units per year, but the facility will have a capacity of 40 units should the demand be there. He estimates that deliveries will start in the first quarter of 2013, with each example going for "just in excess of one million dollars."

While the Tuatara's predecessor, the Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo, set a new 'production car' top speed record of nearly 256 mph in 2007 (since eclipsed by Bugatti), the ever-ambitious Shelby tells Autoblog he plans to take an example to the Nürburgring soon in hopes of setting the production car record.
SSC Tuatara makes North American debut at Pebble Beach originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 21 Aug 2011 19:03:00 EST.
Every year on the Thursday before the Pebble Beach Concours, each of the entrants is given the opportunity to prove its roadworthiness on the scenic roads of 17 Mile Drive and Highway 1. A good selection of cars are usually up to taking on the challenge, although some are better equipped than others.

The Tour d'Elegance, as it's known, also provides car enthusiasts the opportunity to get a look at the all of the amazing vintage metal without having to pay the $175 ticket that allows access to Pebble Beach's 18th fairway on Sunday. Many would also argue that seeing the cars out on public roads is better than seeing them parked in rows on grass.

The big news for this year's Pebble Beach Concours is the 50th anniversary gathering of the Ferrari 250 GTO, and several stunning examples participated in the tour. Fortunately we'll see more of the cars throughout the next few days including on track at Laguna Seca and on the lawn at Pebble Beach on Sunday. You can see the 250 GTOs and more cars from this year's Pebble Beach Tour in the high-res gallery above.
Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Aug 2011 11:28:00 EST.
Infiniti seems to think the world needs another seven-passenger, three-row luxury crossover. And their answer is the JX, first shown this evening in concept form in Pebble Beach before the production model debuts at the LA Auto Show this fall and sales begin in the spring of 2012.

We're hardly enamored with the design, but its specs are sure to appeal to a certain subset of families looking for a premium alternative to a minivan or SUV. Infiniti claims class-leading interior space, with a second row that tilts and slides forward (up to five and half inches) to allow access to a rather commodious set of seats in the way, way back.

Although Infiniti is sticking with its "Inspired Performance" mantra, a V6 fitted with a CVT and sending power through either the front or all four wheels doesn't strike us as particularly sporting. But where the JX should excel is in the features and safety department. In addition to the automaker's Blind Spot Intervention, the JX will come equipped with a new Backup Collision Intervention system, which can detect objects when the crossover is reversing and automatically engage the brakes to avoid a crash.

Other amenities include a 14-speaker Bose stereo system, Infiniti Connection Telematics and the recently launched Personal Assistant program, which provides owners with 24-hour access to a team of living, breathing reps that can do everything from supplying navigation instructions to booking a hotel.

We'll pass final judgement on the styling once we get an eyeful at tonight's reveal, but judging by the shortened time frame between the concept and production model, this Shiro Nakamura design study should be incredibly close to what we'll see in LA this November. Hit the jump for the full details.

If you like Aston Martins but have grown tired of the aging design that characterizes the Vantage, DB9 and Rapide model lines, Monterey, California, is the place to be this week. That's where, amidst all the classics and concours, Aston is showing off its latest car, the V12 Zagato, marking the first time that the car has been shown in North America. The transatlantic voyage follows the concept car's decorated unveiling at Villa d'Este, its competition debut at the Nürburgring and the announcement of its production, which will start next summer.

While many times limited edition cars like this are reserved exclusively for Europe, Aston Martin tells us that the V12 Zagato will be available to customers here in the United States. Granted, buyers will only be able to import the cars under a Show or Display registration, but we're guessing that most owners wouldn't drive more than the limit of 2,500 miles per year, anyway.

While you most likely won't be one of the lucky 150 people to get a £330,000 V12 Zagato, you can get your visual fill of the car in the high-res gallery above.
Aston Martin shows off V12 Zagato, announces U.S. sales program originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 13:01:00 EST.
It's weird for us to report on leaked photos of a car that we've already driven, but we still haven't seen the completely finished 2012 Lexus GS. The sedan will make its public debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this coming weekend, but it appears that photos of the unwrapped prototype has already leaked onto the web.

Seen here in all-wheel-drive GS 350 guise, we must admit that the finished design is decidedly more sedate than what Lexus' teaser image led us to believe. Keep in mind, this car is the spawn of the attractive LF-Gh concept from the 2011 New York Auto Show, and while all cars lose a bit of sex appeal in the transformation from concept to production, the GS seems to have lost a bit more than we had expected, especially out back.

In any case, this looks to be the low-end of the range, not the F Sport or V8 model, and we'll hold our final judgments until we see the finished product in Monterey. Stay tuned for the full details this weekend.
2012 Lexus GS leaks out ahead of Pebble Beach debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 17:26:00 EST.
Monterey weekend is almost upon us, boys and girls. The event at Pebble Beach is consistently packed year-in, year-out with mouthwatering classics, record-breaking auctions, historic automobile races and even a few new vehicle debuts. And this year, Lotus has some big plans.

No, it's not about to unveil six new concepts at once like it did at the Paris Motor Show last year, but it does have a couple of tricks up its proverbial sleeve. First up is the Evora GTE road car concept we've been anticipating since last month, which looks poised to take a page out of the less weight, more power playbook employed on such favorites as the Ferrari 430 Scuderia and Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. The concept starts with the Evora GTE race car and retunes it for the road, with 420 horsepower on tap, a competition-spec sequential gearbox and center-locking forged aluminum wheels.

If you're looking for something more tangible than a concept car, though, Lotus will also be unveiling the Exige Matte Black Final Edition. Exclusive to North America, the special Exige, as you might have guessed, bids a fond farewell to the lightweight sports car with a matte black paint job, plus black Alcantara interior and a 257 horsepower upgrade. Only 25 individually numbered examples will be made, and you can follow the jump for the full press release on both these new debuts.
Continue reading Lotus presenting Evora GTE concept and matte black Exige in Monterey

Lotus presenting Evora GTE concept and matte black Exige in Monterey originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 16 Aug 2011 14:00:00 EST.
Hennessey has announced that it will show off its Venom GT on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at
the McCall's Motorworks Revival during the Pebble Beach weekend, which will take place at the Monterey Jet Center. Of course, we've seen various images of the car along with a few videos thrown in for good measure, but the Texas-based company says this is the car's first official unveiling in the U.S. after making an appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.

In any case, who are we to shun an invitation to gaze upon the glorious Venom GT? With 1,200 horsepower, a 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed estimated at 267 miles per hour, this is one supercar that we're more than happy to drool over. See the first car delivered to a customer in our attached high-res image gallery, and click past the break for a brief press release.
Continue reading Hennessey Venom GT making official U.S. debut at Monterey

Hennessey Venom GT making official U.S. debut at Monterey originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 15 Aug 2011 19:29:00 EST. Thing is, after looking through all of the teaser images, there isn't much left to hide, save, of course, the interior. Here, the JX shows off the one part of its exterior we hadn't yet seen - the passenger-side front three-quarter. We'll still stand by our earlier judgments and say that this thing is shaping up to be substantially more attractive than the big QX, but we'll wait until we see the real deal at Pebble Beach before making our final assessments.
Infiniti JX shows its fourth corner originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 16:15:00 EST.
