BMW Group has announced that DesignworksUSA is hard at work on what's supposed to be the world's greenest parking garage. In partnership with Canopy Airport Parking, the design house plans to construct a 4,200-vehicle facility at Denver International Airport that will leverage a full spectrum of green technology solutions. The garage (and its shuttle buses) will tap into power sources from solar, wind, geothermal, compressed natural gas, biodiesel and hybrid drivetrains, just to name a few. In an attempt to make the new building more attractive to EV and plug-in hybrid owners, there will be "juice bar" charging stations on hand, too.

As a result of its efforts, DesignworksUSA hopes that the new garage will nab a Platinum certification from the Green Parking Council, a non-profit group that certifies parking structures based on their ecological and social impact. The whole shebang is slated to be open for business starting late next month, just in time for the holiday season. Hit the jump to take a look at the quick press release.
Tupac lives. And we have just discovered that M. C. Escher is also alive, well, living in Australia, and going by the name of Axel Peemoeller. Designer Peemoeller worked out the math to create, optically, directional signage that appears to hang in the air. Found in the carpark of the Eureka Tower in Melbourne, there's no technowizardy here, just a man with a can of paint and a few severely skewed letters. The result: mindbending. And bloody genius. Well done, Mr. <strike>Escher</strike> Peemoeller. It used to be that you could look for the cigarrette ember so you could meet up with Deep Throat, but Raleigh, North Carolina has beat back the shadows as it became the first LED City. Parking garages in Raleigh have seen their standing with the public improve since LED lighting systems replaced the old high pressure sodium lighting. The whiter, brighter illumination led to a 76 percent increase in "very safe" replies to a survey on how the security of the garage was perceived. Whether the change has precipitated an actual drop in parking garage crime, or if it was even a problem in Raleigh to begin with, we can't say; but changing perception's not a bad thing, either. It's another feather in the cap of LED lighting technology, along with reducing energy consumption and the aforementioned lighting quality.

[Source: CREE via engadget]

Survey Says: Garages lit with LED seem safer originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Apr 2007 11:06:00 EST. It's that nifty robotic parking garage that promised to do a much better job than the country's first attempt at automated parking in New Jersey. That was the one that managed to drop a Cadillac Deville and a Jeep from pretty high up. It also trapped approximately 300 vehicles inside for 26 hours when the city's contract with the software company responsible for running the garage expired. That situation has been cleared up, apparently, and hopes for the new garage in NY are high as well.

The new robotic garage opened in Chinatown in early February. Built and run by AutoMotion Parking Systems, it stores 67 cars underground in the same amount of space a traditional garage could only fit 24. All for just $25/day or $400/month, which seems to be competitive for NYC parking. AutoMotion claims there's next-to no chance of any problems like those experienced in NJ. And now we have a slideshow from the New York Times portraying the whole process step-by-step. Click the read link to see the M3 convertible disappear into the bowels of the system and return to the surface unscathed.

[Source: The New York Times, Popular Mechanics]
Continue reading Slideshow of NYC's first automated parking garage

Slideshow of NYC's first automated parking garage originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Mar 2007 14:27:00 EST. These facilities are wonders to behold in person and usually loved by their patrons, except when someone turns it off with their cars trapped inside.

Last week it happened at the Garden Street Garage when the city of Hoboken entered into a dispute with Robotic Parking, the owners of the software that run the garage. The city of Hoboken had police escort Robotic Parking employees from the garage a few days before the contract between the two parties was going to expire. Unfortunately, Hoboken didn't realize that its software license ran out after its contract with Robotic Parking expired and that the garage would, subsequently, just stop working.

Both sides went to court where it was settled that Hoboken would pay $5,500 for a new three-year software license, and the victimized patrons finally got their vehicles back.

[Source: Wired]
Robotic Parking Garage shuts down, traps hundreds of cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Aug 2006 15:29:00 EST. But a Bimmer that pays your parking space? That's what the Munich Technical University Applied Informatics/Cooperative Systems and BMW Group Research and Technology groups have developed for the 7-Series. The technology interfaces with the parking garage system wirelessly to calculate fees and pay as you exit the structure.

BMW has not stated if and when it'll roll out such a system.
