No, this is not some creation from the backwoods of Georgia. Fiat actually partnered with Mercurio Cinematografica to wed a Panda 4x4 with a Jeep CJ7. The result is the plucky face of the Panda astride a set of 59-inch tractor tires. The whole contraption sits 12.8 feet tall and took just over two weeks to build from start to finish.

We imagine driving this thing is a bit like trying to coax a jello mold down the road. There's no word on whether engineers kept the Panda's engine and transmission or abandoned them for the AMC bits. Our money's on the latter. Fiat says the hardest part was getting the brakes, steering, clutch and accelerator controls to cooperate with the archaic bones below.

So, why build it? Fiat is currently in the midst of an advertising campaign that highlight's the Panda's attributes, and building a Big Foot version of the little hatchback was the easiest way to show off the vehicle's off-road prowess. You can watch it play in the snow in the video below.
Continue reading Fiat Panda, Italian for Monster Truck [w/video]

Fiat Panda, Italian for Monster Truck [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 09 Dec 2012 19:03:00 EST.
Fiat has already dropped all of the info for its new Panda 4x4 mini utility, but the Paris Motor Show allows us to finally see this prospective future Jeep in the flesh. Claimed to be the only four-wheel-drive offering in Europe's A-segment, the 2013 Fiat Panda 4x4 promises to be a proficient off-roader in a very small package.

From the sounds of it, this latest Panda 4x4 is no softroader, with permanent four-wheel drive that maximizes off-road capabilities through a torque-on-demand system that features a pair of differentials. The Panda 4x4's electronic locking differential can apply the brakes to wheels losing grip and transfer that power to other wheels for optimal traction. Power comes from either an 80-horsepower, 0.9-liter TwinAir Turbo engine or a 1.3-liter diesel.

While giving off the rugged vibe with all its black plastic cladding, the Panda 4x4 still has a cute exterior design that displays its kinship to the Fiat 500. Speaking of the 500, the Panda 4x4 rides on the same 90.6-inch wheelbase as Fiat's iconic hatchback - despite having four doors - and it's also longer, taller and wider than the standard Panda.

We doubt the U.S. will ever see the Panda or the Panda 4x4, but it could very well be the basis for a new sub-Compass model in the Jeep lineup, so it will likely pay to keep a close eye on Fiat's cuddly little dirtmonger. Scroll down for the official press release with more details.
Continue reading 2013 Fiat Panda 4x4 is 'go anywhere' in a small package

2013 Fiat Panda 4x4 is 'go anywhere' in a small package originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 20:59:00 EST.
Not a Kung-Fu panda, but a "Super Panda." That's what Fiat is calling the third-generation, four-wheel-drive A-segment five-door hatch, which is apparently "ready to tackle mountain mule tracks and the urban jungle with the same cool." If that sounds like your kind of beast, this 4x4 wears all manner of elements to let others know you mean business: black trim and skirting with contrasting skid plates front and back, different fog lights, 15-inch alloys on chunky tires, and the muffler has been raised so that it's tucked within the bodywork.

The six-speed transmission has a low-range first gear. Power is routed to all four wheels, permanently, with an electronically-controlled coupling managing the differentials, with an Electronic Locking Differential further managing the spin at each wheel by applying the brakes when slip is detected. The suspension is MacPherson up front and ditches the semi-trailing arms for a torsion beam at the rear.

Both available engines improve on the previous 1.2-liter Fire that had 68 horsepower and 75 pound-feet of torque, with the new 1.3-liter, 75-hp MultiJet II diesel bettering torque by 30 percent and the 0.9-liter, 85-horsepower TwinAir Turbo raising that number by 40 percent. Both are fitted with start/stop.

The new Panda 4x4 has also got more colorful, with Toscana green metallic and Sicilia orange joining the exterior palette, and three-color seats placed inside. The cabin also gets more eco-leather detailing, remote central locking, rear headrests, a CD and MP3 player and more storage, since you never know what you'll find on those mule tracks.

When the it is introduced at the Paris Motor Show next month it will be joined by two more additions to the Panda line: the Trekking and Natural Power times. Trekking gives the front-wheel-drive Panda the look of the 4x4 and Fiat's Traction+ system that works off the electronic stability control programming to provide better grip. The Panda Natural Power uses the 0.9-liter TwinAir Turbo adapted to run on gasoline and methane. There's more info to feed your Panda fix in the press release below.
Continue reading Fiat previews new Panda 4x4 ahead of Paris

Fiat previews new Panda 4x4 ahead of Paris originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 30 Aug 2012 09:58:00 EST.
Much like Mini at its launch, Fiat remains largely a one-model make (here in the United States, that is). While that may not change anytime soon in the U.S., there are rumblings that the model lineup in Canada could expand.

Buoyed by sales proportionately larger above the 49th Parallel than below it, Fiat is apparently plans to add the new Panda (pictured above) and the aging Punto to the Canadian market. Coupled with the expected arrival of the 500L in Fiat "studios" both in Canada and the United States, suddenly the availability of affordable Italian cars looks on the up in the country where Sergio Marchionne was schooled.
Fiat to expand Canadian lineup with Panda and Punto? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 01 Apr 2012 12:02:00 EST.
Recognize that tag line? It was used in the first ad for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, a 90-second spot devoted to resetting our image of Jeep and, subtly, America itself. Chrysler parent Fiat evidently thinks so much of the tagline that they've taken it to Italy for use in the ad campaign for the 2012 Fiat Panda.

Italy's had a tough time of late: just as it was trying to get Berlusconi and his "bunga bunga" in the rearview, its debt crisis went from 'critical' to 'euro-zone threatening,' austerity measures led to social and labor unrest, and now comes the capsized Costa Concordia and an Italian captain with the unique ability to trip and fall into a lifeboat before his passengers.

The Panda doesn't softly beat the drum of national spirit, it instead presents the Panda as just one symbol of what Italy can be if it is dedicated to working its way out of its funk. The Panda is so symbolic that, unlike in the Jeep commercial, the narrator never mentions the car. It's airing on Italian television now, and you can see it after the jump.
Continue reading Fiat co-opts Jeep tagline for new Panda campaign

Fiat co-opts Jeep tagline for new Panda campaign originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 09:29:00 EST.
When a new vehicle arrives, the previous model is usually consigned to the history books. But that isn't always the case. Volkswagen, for example, has continued production of outdated models in South America and other markets years after they've been replaced. Jeep did the same with the XJ Cherokee in China, and now Fiat has taken a page out of the same playbook with the Panda Classic.

Launched in 2003, the outgoing Panda remains a strong seller in Italy (where, despite its lingering age, it held 38 percent of the market share last year) and across Europe (where its 15.7 percent market share makes it the top-selling city car). It's now being replaced by the New Panda, but rather than phase the old car out completely, it lives on as a budget proposition.

The front-drive Panda Classic will be offered in one trim level, with six color options and four engine options. The all-wheel-drive Panda Climbing soft-roader also soldiers on with similar specs.

Although the New Panda may be the better product in every way, European buyers on a budget may find the Panda Classic a tempting proposition with prices starting at just 7,900 euros. Full details follow in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Fiat Panda Classic keeps old model on the (European) market

Fiat Panda Classic keeps old model on the (European) market originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 07:57:00 EST.
Back before Fiat relaunched the Abarth performance brand, enthusiasts and auto journos across the pond were enamored with a humble but reportedly fun-filled little number called the Panda 100HP. As you might have guessed, it was Fiat's basic hatchback, packing a modest 100 horsepower, but the combination was said to be one of the most enjoyable driving machines around.

The Panda 100HP was overshadowed and ultimately replaced by the arrival of the 500 Abarth, based on the same platform but with retro styling and more power on offer. But new reports indicate that Abarth may now be looking to the newly facelifted Panda (pictured above) as a third model for its range, alongside the Cinquecento and Punto but with less power and a more accessible price tag.

According to Auto Express, the Abarth Panda would pack about 110 horsepower from a tuned version of Fiat Powertrain Technology's much-lauded two-cylinder turbo engine. Coupled with 16- or 17-inch alloys, full body kit and a performance-oriented interior with sport buckets, a thick-rimmed steering wheel and short-throw shifter, the utile Panda could pack a mean little punch.
Fiat Panda to get hot Abarth model? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 Nov 2011 09:00:00 EST.
Fiat has given its completely redesigned Panda - only the third in the model's 31-year history - its international debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Italian automaker describes the five-seat 2012 Panda as "compact but capable" and says the third-generation high-riding city car is more stylish and sips far less fuel than the outgoing Panda.

Measuring in with a total length of less than 144 inches, the redesigned Panda is ever-so slightly longer than the 2011 model. However, the added length means the 2012 Panda sports one of the most spacious boots in the city car segment.

It's likely all four of the available engine options will make their way into Pandas sold throughout Europe. These choices consist of 64- and 83-horsepower turbocharged versions of Fiat's two-cylinder 900-cc TwinAir gas engine, plus a more conventional (and cheaper) 68-hp 1.2-liter gas engine and a 74-hp 1.3-liter turbodiesel.

Efficiency is the name of the game here, with stop-start technology likely to feature heavily across the 2012 Panda lineup. Fiat says the revised 1.3-liter MultiJet II diesel - now with start-stop and intelligent alternator control - is the most efficient of the bunch with CO2 emissions listed at just 90 g/km. That roughly equates to 69 miles per gallon on Europe's combined test cycle.

Fiat has prepped an all-new Panda, and the high-riding city car is set to make its world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The 2012 Panda represents the current zenith of the front-wheel-drive compact's evolution. This third-generation Panda features a restyled exterior paired with an updated interior design and a handful of engine choices.

Two new engines join the Panda powerplant family, which brings the total number of available mills to six. The new units are both two-cylinder 900-cc engines equipped with Fiat's Start&Stop system to help cut down on emissions while raising fuel economy. Both engines are TwinAir mills, with one breathing naturally and the other utilizing forced induction by way of a single turbocharger. The non-turbo engine produces 65 horsepower while the turbo version pumps out 85 horses.

The rest of the engine lineup doesn't grow larger than 75-horsepower 1.3-liter Multijet II, and you can read all about it and the 2012 Fiat Panda by clicking past the jump to see the full press release.
Continue reading Fiat previews updated Panda ahead of Frankfurt

Fiat previews updated Panda ahead of Frankfurt originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Aug 2011 18:33:00 EST.
Though the relaunch of Fiat in North America has centered around the 500, that's not the only model that the Italian automaker offers. Not by a long shot. And we're not even talking about rebadged Dodge models like the Freemont/Journey.

Overseas, one of Fiat's most popular models has long been the Panda. The vehicle forms the basis upon which the Fiat 500, Lancia Ypsilon and Ford Ka are built, not to mention the Brazilian-market Uno, making it one of the company's most successful and proliferative platforms. But even on its own, the Panda is a success in its own right.

In fact, the Panda has just reached its two-millionth unit built and sold, rolling off the line at Fiat's busy assembly plant in Tychy, Poland. The model in question (pictured above) is a red Panda Cross softroader with a 75-horsepower, 1.3-liter MultiJet diesel four - one of four engines offered across eight trim levels, in fifteen different colors with two drivetrain configurations.
We hate to say this, but until now, we didn't realize it was physically possible to do a stoppie in a subcompact car. We thought launching a vehicle onto its front rollers was generally left to the two-wheeled crowd, but a new video of the Geely Panda has officially proven otherwise. The company has let loose a video of a fleet of the tiny cutesy hatchbacks being flogged in the best way possible. Want to see a Panda do donuts in reverse? No problem. How about cruise along on two wheels? You got it.

We have no idea what the text in between the shots of the cars suffering the kind of abuse that only stunt drivers can inflict and video of the assembly line says, but that's okay. We understand the cute-as-a-button Panda paw print, and, as you all know, hooning is a universal language. Besides, it makes us think of the old Isuzu I-Mark and various Saab stunt team exhibitions, and that can't be all bad. Hop the jump to see the mad skills for yourself. Thanks for the tip, JPHyundai!

It comes as little surprise that Jeep is looking beyond its current Patriot and Compass models, which have, to put it mildly, underperformed in the burgeoning compact CUV market. While the two concepts had lots of potential, the actual production ComPatriot twins were deemed uncompetitive with class leaders right when they were launched.

As such, the two models are both destined to meet their makers after the 2012 model, to be replaced by a single model sourced from Fiat. Can you say Panda (the image above is just a possible rendering, not a production car)? It's also worth noting that the iconic Wranger will get mild makeovers for both the 2010 and 2011 model years along with what seems likely to be a special 70th Anniversary Wranger for 2011.

Across the line, all Jeeps will reportedly come with an optional Trail Rated package, which means no more on-road only models like the Compass are likely to dilute the Jeep brand. That edict includes the new Grand Cherokee, and Jeep says the Trail Rated Grand Cherokee has already successfully tackled the legendary Rubicon Trail and Moab.

You might think that Mercedes and McLaren have been busy churning out new editions of the SLR supercar like madmen (you know, aside from winning the world championship), but they're just taking a page out of the Fiat playbook. The Italian automaker has once again unveiled a new version of its diminutive Panda.

Called the Glam Edition, the special version starts with the Panda 4x4 and updates it with a new pearl white paint job complimented by aluminum roof rails and a new set of 15" alloys, but the Panda 4x4 Glam differentiates itself further inside with denim-style upholstery that should bridge the gap between the hip Diesel edition 500 and the maternal Panda Mammy. We've got more images in the gallery below, but something tells us this isn't one of those European hatchbacks we'll be pining for Stateside.

Two of the more compelling concepts we expect to see in Germany include the Volkswagen City Expert and Toyota's Endo microcar, both of which will likely see production in an effort to provide diminutive, low-cost transport across the globe. Fiat apparently wants in on the action too.

According to Automotive News, Fiat may be developing its own sub-compact runabout, based off the Panda and 500 platform, only with 300mm lopped off. Able to seat four, the concept will be powered by a 65 HP, 900cc two-cylinder engine, but it won't make its debut until sometime next year.

The article also sheds light on both the VW and Toyota vehicles, with the former coming in at about 3,400 mm and the latter stretching a full 3,150 mm. Skoda and Seat, affiliates of Volkswagen, are likely to get their own versions later, both powered by either a two- or three-cylinder engine that lies flat underneath the rear seats. Expect to see variants of the City Expert in both Tokyo and Los Angeles later this year.

Whether or not either of automaker can make a profit on these vehicles is a question that has sparked debate among analysts, but regardless, expect Toyota's Endo to make it to production in 2009 and VW's City Expert around the same time.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub.
The Abarth name was only retrieved from the dustbin of history a few months ago, and already Fiat is showing off funky concepts for it. Created by the European Institute of Design, sitting on a Fiat Panda platform, and powered by a 100 bhp 1.4-liter motor, the Abarth roadster could sell for £12,000 if it were ever produced. True, 100 bhp isn't much, but the roadster's weight wouldn't be much, either. The two-tone paint job and black hood would signify an SS edition, and a turbo could be fitted to the 1.4-liter for a 50 hp jump. Right now, though, there are no plans for such a car. For the time being there will be no dedicated Abarth model. The name will only be used for hotted-up versions of Fiat cars.

A pair of race-prepped Pandas will compete in the 8,100 kilometer event. Our sister site, AutoblogGreen, reports that the PanDAKARs, as they're called, will be equipped with 42-gallon fuel tanks. That should give the cars, which are powered by 1.3L Miltijet turbodiesels, unbelievable range.

As you'd expect, the panelized Pandas will also be stocked with water reserves, tools to help them extract themselves when stuck in the sand, and 3 spare wheels. The support machinery consists of a Fiat Sedici (a.k.a. Suzuki SX4) service vehicle, which we'd love to see in its Dakar trim, as well as a trio of Iveco trucks.

We're looking forward to seeing how the cuddly 'lil Pandas do in the challenging race.
A hundred horsepower isn't usually anything to write home about, but in a tiny car like the Fiat Panda it makes for a fun recipe. We've said it before and we'll say it again, we like the Fiat Panda Sport and wish we could get them here in the US.

This promo video shows the miniscule go-kart/supermini zipping around a track (admittedly not the most likely place you'll see it), and offers some odd zoom-ins and pans on such "interesting" features as the tailgate latch. All set to a bizarrely calming electronic soundtrack.

We just love it when cars and models collide (figuratively, not literally... that'd be tragic). It's convergence at its finest. Like Jodie Kidd who races Maseratis, supermodel Elle Macpherson also loves Italian cars, albeit slightly smaller ones. Elle became the first owner of the new Fiat Panda 100HP when the new suped-up ultra-teeny-tiny-supermini made its British debut at the MPH '06 show this past Thursday.

While 100 horsepower may not sound like much, considering the Panda's Lilliputian dimensions, it's nothing to sneeze at (especially among the car's asthmatic competition). The Panda is a little over three-and-a-half meters long, one-and-a-half meters each wide and tall, and weights less than one ton, so 100 horses are all it takes to get it to sixty in 9.5 seconds. It tops out at 115 mph while returning 43.4 mpg on the combined cycle. Fiat's Abarth performance division also gave the Panda 100HP disc brakes all around (vented up front) , as well as an upgraded suspension, with some visual enhancements to go with the extra performance kit.

We just wish this cute model were available and in the US. (The Panda too, for that matter.)

Over the past year, across Europe, Fiat has sold 24,000 methane-powered cars; the major advantage being reduced CO2 emissions.

The rather oddly-named Panda Panda (shown) is a flexible-fuel vehicle that can run on either methane or conventional gasoline, going on sale in Italy beginning January. Using the floor-plan from the four-wheel-drive Panda but driving only through the front wheels, the supplemental methane tanks are placed where the 4WD mechanicals would be, giving the Panda Panda the bonus of increased range.

The Multipla Multi-eco concept, meanwhile, runs on methane, gasoline or E85 bioethanol. Like the Panda Panda, the methane is stored in separate tanks, while the main tank takes either gas or bioethanol, leaving the ECU to switch modes automatically according to the fuel used.

We're still waiting for our flying DeLorean that runs on either plutonium or garbage, with a flux capacitor pumping out 1.21 gigawatts!
