The Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo was arguably the best concept car of 2012, and Porsche has been building upon that momentum by teasing us with videos of its first-ever station wagon design. After showing us some driving shots of the Sport Turismo, Porsche released a more in-depth and behind-the-scenes look at what it took to take the Panamera shooting brake from a full-scale clay model to the final product we saw on stage at the Paris Motor Show. In the video, Michael Mauer, Porsche style director, and Mitja Borkert, general manager advanced design style, both give a little insight about what went into creating the Sport Turismo Concept.

More than just a station wagon version of the Panamera, the Sport Turismo has a totally distinctive look nose to tail. Some of the key elements the designers touch on in the video include the Porsche-signature raised front fenders, the wide rear shoulders, the front wing inspired by the 918 Spyder, and even some of the car's unique touches, including the headlights and the three-dimensional "Porsche" lettering across the liftgate made from glass. One of the more exciting aspects of the concept - which is sadly just glossed over in the video - is the rear liftgate spoiler that features "variable aerodynamics" that sounds like it acts similar to the retractable spoiler on the current Panamera.

We still don't know if the Panamera Sport Turismo will make it into production, but if you want to see what went into creating this exciting concept car and see the different build phases designers went through to create the Paris show car, check out the video by scrolling below.
Continue reading Porsche offers design walkthrough of Panamera Sport Turismo

Porsche offers design walkthrough of Panamera Sport Turismo originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 Jan 2013 14:59:00 EST.
We've been fans of the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept ever since we first laid eyes on it at the Paris Motor Show back in September. And just when we finally managed to get that sensational rump out of our minds, Porsche has gone and released a video of the sexy beast in action. The video also features the German automaker's general manager of advanced design style, Mitja Borkert, as well as Porsche Design Studio chief Michael Mauer. The two speak on the themes of the Sport Turismo, namely "form follows function." They also state the obvious; that the Panamera Sport Turismo is instantly recognizable as a Porsche yet simultaneously different from any other Stuttgart stormer before it.

Also discussed is the 335-horsepower, supercharged V6 powerplant, working in unison with a 95-horsepower electric motor in a parallel hybrid setup. Porsche states that the Sport Turismo has a 30-km (18.6 mile) pure-electric range. We are also treated to various shots of the futuristic instrument cluster and center control console. The former consists of a large TFT screen with video side view monitors, while the latter is a combination of touch-capacitive and touchscreen controls.

While visually stunning, the important mission statement of this vehicle is perhaps best summed up by Mauer, "This Sport Turismo Concept is as well, showing that there is no contradiction between sportiness and functionality." Though wowed by the driving footage in the video below, Mauer's statement evokes a combination that we can get behind - especially when the resulting concept car solves the production Panamera hatchback's unfortunate rear end so beautifully.
Continue reading Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo gets its driving debut

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo gets its driving debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Dec 2012 15:00:00 EST.
Well this is something you don't see every day. Thieves in Amsterdam have been preying upon unsuspecting Porsche models recently. That may not be unusual in and of itself, but the burglars are not attempting to make off with the entire car. Rather, they are stealing only the HID headlights. But what's most interesting is the purpose behind snatching just the headlamp assemblies.

It is believed that the headlights make for ideal lighting solutions when growing marijuana indoors. The high-intensity discharge bulbs give off more heat and require much less power than standard grow lamps, yet, critically, they offer the right quality of light and heat. According to De Telegraaf, as many as 20 Porsches fell victim to this trend, resulting in thousands of dollars in damage. The cost of a typical HID assembly for hydroponics can run from $100 to $500, and up.

This is apparently the latest hot-button item to be stolen from luxury cars, following navigation systems and airbags. Scroll down to check out the video of a thief making short work of Panamera peepers.
Continue reading Thieves stealing Porsche headlamps for marijuana grow lights

Thieves stealing Porsche headlamps for marijuana grow lights originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Nov 2012 12:45:00 EST.
Porsche has been steadily bolstering its Panamera line since the car was first introduced adding models like the V6, Hybrid and GTS, and starting next year, it is adding a new model to the mix, the Panamera Platinum Edition. The 2013 Porsche Panamera Platinum Edition goes on sale on January 5, and it is only offered on the V6 models with a starting price of $80,500 for rear-wheel-drive and $84,600 for the all-wheel-drive Panamera 4 version; neither of these prices includes the $975 destination charge.

In terms of visual changes, the Platinum Edition gets unique platinum silver metallic inserts on the lower grille, rear diffuser and on the bottom edges of the door mirrors for a subtle differentiation from the base Panamera. Similarly, the interior adds a few styling upgrades as well with a new black-on-beige coloring throughout the cabin, a sport steering wheel and metallic door sill plates inscribed with "Platinum Edition."

Both versions of this new package represent a premium of more than $4,000 over a Panamera V6, but with this higher price comes plenty of equipment that are options on the base car. The Platinum Edition's standard features include the 19-inch Turbo alloy wheels (normally a $1,950 option), the Bose Audio system (a $1,990 option) and most of the equipment found in the $5,680 Premium Package, including the active bi-Xenon headlights and heated seats for all four passengers.
Whether or not it's ever going to be built, the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept sounds like it will be playing a pivotal role in upcoming Porsche products. Following the car's debut at the Paris Motor Show, Motor Trend sat down with Porsche AG President and CEO, Matthias Müller, to discuss where we might see elements from this stylish concept car in the future.

For those who liked the styling of the Panamera Sport Turismo Concept (and who wouldn't?) Müller said that the car's headlights and taillights will become part of the new design language on all future models. The taillights already pull from the 991 Porsche 911 and the headlights are very Boxster-like, but starting with the new Porsche Macan compact SUV, these two styling cues will be blended together to help create a new signature look for the brand. Up until now, Porsche has been trying to mimic the 911's styling on bigger cars, and while this idea seemed to work on the Cayenne, the Panamera's design has made it a controversial car to say the least.

One of the concept's key features was its plug-in hybrid drivetrain, and Müller confirmed that this system will make it into production next year on the Panamera (including in the U.S.) and then the following year for the Cayenne. He also stated that premium and "huge" cars are not quite ready for full battery-electric drive systems, so Porsche will continue to focus on plug-in hybrids over the next five to 10 years to balance fuel economy and performance.

When we heard that Porsche would be bringing a Panamera wagon concept to Paris, reaction was just as scattered as people's reaction to the Panamera itself; some actually wondering if the Panamera isn't already a wagon, others deciding, to put it kindly, that the back end of Porsche's five-door can only go up, design-wise.

Then we saw leaked pics of the Panamera Sport Turismo Concept and it was a whole different world - one of decidedly confident beauty. Going all junior-Cayenne-with-attitude, the Sport Turismo is "an outlook on a possible Porsche sports car of tomorrow" that we think needs to drop the "possible," add some side mirrors and get with the production program.

Powered by an evolution of Porsche's current hybrid system used in the Panamera S Hybrid, the Sport Turismo Concept's new "e-hybrid" system uses the 333-horsepower, supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and a 95-hp electric motor for 416 combined horses and a 30-kilometer electric range. Unlike the current production system, this e-hybrid setup prioritizes all-electric motivation unless the driver instructs the car otherwise. Interestingly, the Sport Turismo is technically a plug-in hybrid, as the lithium-ion pack can be charged in as little as 2.5 hours when plugged into a wall outlet. Porsche says the combined powertrain is good for a 0-62 mph time in under six seconds, and the Sport Turismo can exceed 80 mph purely on electric power. (You can learn more powertrain specifics by checking out the official PR by scrolling down).

Inside is more conceptual, with a binnacle-mounted TFT screen displaying vehicle information, a black panel screen in the center console, monitors providing feeds from the cameras that substitute for sideview mirrors, and even a touchscreen starting process.

There's really nothing not to like here, and so we can find no reason not to build it. Porsche, you know what to do.
Continue reading Porsche Sport Turismo Concept introduces Panamera to pulchritude and plugging in [w/video]

Porsche Sport Turismo Concept introduces Panamera to pulchritude and plugging in [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 12:00:00 EST.
With the 2012 Paris Motor Show kicking off tomorrow, Porsche has already dropped what could be the biggest bombshell of the show with this Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept. Aside from giving the polarizing Panamera five-door hatchback much sexier lines, this long-rumored cargo-friendly concept obviously has the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake dead in its sights.

Judging by these leaked pictures, the Panamera Sport Turismo Concept is somewhat of a hodgepodge of current Porsche models, looking like a chopped Cayenne with headlights similar to those of the new Boxster and taillamps derived from the 911. While the rump of the current Panamera is, by far, the car's most controversial design element, the Sport Turismo Concept puts that all to sleep finishing off this car with an exclamation point. This concept car probably also foretells a refreshed face that could be on the way for the three-year-old Panamera as well as an updated cabin that might actually do away with the overabundance of buttons in favor of some high-tech gadgetry.

We can't help but daydream about a production Panamera Sport Turismo in Turbo form, but the Concept is propelled by a plug-in hybrid powertrain wearing the "e-Hybrid" designation. Details are scarce about this system, but it looks like it will add a trunk-mounted battery pack and a single drive motor to the rear axle of the rear-wheel-drive V6 Panamera.

We will definitely have more information and images for you in the next couple days, so stay tuned to learn (and see) more of this new exciting Porsche concept.

We've already driven the Porsche Panamera GTS in Europe in a track environment, but haven't had the chance to talk about this car after driving it in on U.S. roads yet. I've driven a few different Panamera variants since the five-door hatchback was first introduced for 2010, but this all-wheel-drive Carmine Red GTS is my favorite variant thus far. It just strikes the right balance of power and poise with its amazingly well-sorted suspension (the GTS rides 10 millimeters lower than lesser models and comes standard with air suspension and Porsche Active Stability Management). The naturally aspirated V8 makes a great noise and with 430 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, and it has plenty of motivation yet actually doesn't feel absurdly overpowered.

Driving Notes

The automatic rear wing is a complex multi-piece affair that unfurls outward and then laterally. It's a nice piece of engineering and undoubtedly helps with downforce, but with how often it deploys and hides away (it opens and closes at around 60 miles per hour), I can't help but wonder how many duty cycles it will endure before it needs adjustment or repair. It's not the prettiest thing when extended, either.

I've driven PDK-equipped Porsches before - even Panameras - but this is the best iteration of this seven-speed dual clutch yet. It's near seamless, with improved slow-speed tractability. There were still a few occasions when PDK locked out downshifts into high revs, but it was generally very obedient. I'm not sure if it's a range-wide software update for 2013 or whether the tuning is specific to GTS, but this might be the best DCT on the market.

A few years ago, Porsche changed its keys to appear like miniaturized silhouettes of the model you're driving, and the keys can even be color-coded to your car's paint. It's a costly flourish ($335), but hey, your valet will thank you.

Thanks to its hatchback configuration, the Panamera is surprisingly useful, but the aggressively raked backlight can distort one's rear view somewhat. Smart move to have two buttons for the power close, though - one that just closes it, and the other that locks the whole car.

How glad am I that the buzzkill start-stop feature can be defeated once and for all without resorting to fuse-pulling or reprogramming?

Thumb the button to awaken the quad-tipped exhaust and you'll be greeted with a wonderful roar from the quick-revving 4.8-liter V8. The sound is so good I still wished for more of it, but that could've been because my car was fitted with $1,240 in soundproof/heat-resistant glass. How about an additional stage, Porsche?

It's not like we needed it, but the latest episode of Motor Trend's "Head 2 Head" is more proof that those who spend six-figures buy whatever they want (or more likely, they buy three or four of them), not necessarily what wins the spec war or a drag race.

Jonny Lieberman took two German thunder chariots, the BMW M5 and Porsche Panamera GTS, to the desert for a quarter-mile blast and then up to altitude for duty in the high mountain esses.

In black and white, the M5 has it all over the GTS. Although the properly trunked sedan weighs 39 pounds more, its 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 harnesses 130 more horsepower and 196 more pound-feet than the naturally-aspirated 4.8-liter V8 in the GTS. The BMW starts at nearly $20,000 less than the Porsche, a savings which skyrockets to $42,000 when as-tested prices for these particular cars are compared. For those wondering, an even greater price disparity is the reason MT didn't use the Panamera Turbo, which might have seemed a fairer car to use for comparison from a performance standpoint.
But we don't live black-and-white lives, do we? There are reasons for Porsche reverence, one of them that it has always done more with what might, at first, seem like less. You should allow Lieberman the chance to explain further by checking out the video below.
Continue reading Motor Trend pits BMW M5 against Porsche Panamera GTS

Motor Trend pits BMW M5 against Porsche Panamera GTS originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 12:31:00 EST.
Luxury, meet performance. Opulence, meet frugality.

That's apparently the plan between two of Volkswagen Group's more posh brands, Bentley and Porsche, as they explore ways to stretch Euros and provide a little commonality between the two distinct brands.

According to Autocar, Bentley will begin using the Porsche Panamera platform for its future vehicles, providing a much better base for rear- and all-wheel-drive vehicles. Additionally, Bentley will phase out its 6.75-liter V8 in 2013, likely replacing it with a V12. It may be a wise consolidation, and no one should ever complain when eight cylinders are replaced with 12, but we'll miss that magnificently brutal V8.

The news only confirms what many believed might happen as far back as 2010, when it was rumored that Bentley and Porsche were collaborating on how to best use the Panamera platform.
Future Bentleys to be built on Porsche platforms originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 09:31:00 EST.
Ask an automaker what buyers say they want from the next generation of a certain vehicle, and one of the answers will almost certainly be "More room." Porsche Panamera buyers are no different, having done enough clamoring for additional cargo space that Porsche sees reason to at least test the idea. Last month there were rumors of such, Automotive News has now confirmed that a concept will be arriving at the Paris Motor Show and be used to judge reaction.

Of course, we'd been hoping that Panamera development would be focused in the other direction first, something in the two-door variety that would satisfy our hankerings for a new 928 GTS. We're happy to report that, also according to Auto News, work on that is progressing as well, but the potential wagon money and the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake have beckoned the Griswold's Vacation version to the plate first.

Should the wagon concept come to life it won't do so before 2016, and it will be part of the multitudinous plans being developed for the second-generation car on its more versatile platform. So far the possibilities include the aforementioned two-door and a four-seater convertible, a long-wheelbase version for China, and perhaps the wagon, with Bentley adding a new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in the mix and platform cross-pollenization with the next Bentley GT and GTC. We'll have more information from the Paris Motor Show floor.
Porsche bringing Panamera wagon concept to the Paris Motor Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Aug 2012 08:45:00 EST.
A potentially defective turbine wheel in the turbochargers of 2011 and 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo and Turbo S models and the 2012 Porsche Cayenne Turbo has led to a recall. There are 270 units affected among the three models, with a casting defect being cited as the cause of the trouble. The issue could lead to a fracture in the turbocharger itself, which could then lead to follow-on problems, smoke and risk of fire.

Porsche is notifying owners this month, after whcih they can take their cars to their dealers for repair free of charge. A complete notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is below.
Continue reading Porsche recalls select 2012 Panamera, Cayenne models over turbo fractures

Porsche recalls select 2012 Panamera, Cayenne models over turbo fractures originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jul 2012 10:03:00 EST. We're a little confused by the move, as the current model already offers plenty of cargo capacity and rear seat room, but we suppose that hasn't stopped manufacturers from spinning off multiple load-lugging bodystyles from the same model before. Autobild says a production version of the Panamera Shooting Brake could bow with the next-generation of the four-door in 2015, depending on how well the CLS Shooting Brake sells.

Meanwhile, website GTSpirit.com is piling on an earlier AutoExpress report that McLaren may be interested in giving the Ferrari FF a run for its money. Rumors indicate a MP4-12C Shooting Brake would still get power from the same turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 found in the Coupe and new Spider model. With 592 horsepower on hand, the hatch could click off the 0-62 mph run in around three seconds. What we're most interested in with this mooted model is packaging - the MP4-12C is a rear mid-engined design, suggesting packaging rear seats or cargo area would be a difficult enterprise. Word has it the machine could arrive as soon as 2013, though that seems unlikely. If that were the case, odds are our spy shooters would have already spotted test mules out and about.
Porsche planning Panamera Shooting Brake, McLaren mulling one, too originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Jul 2012 11:30:00 EST.
Just days after reporting that Porsche had plans to introduce the Pajun, a competitor for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class that would slot just below the Panamera, Automotive News quoted Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller saying the Pajun was not a done deal but could become reality in five or six years.

Automotive News was referencing an interview Mueller gave to German newspaper Stuttgarter Zeitung, in which he also says the company has no plans for an entry-level Porsche below the Boxster until at least 2014.

"We would do no good to the brand if we were to lose traditional Porsche customers," Mueller told the newspaper. In another interview with German business publication Wirtschaftswoche, Mueller said, "Possibly we need to wait until the next generation of customers before the idea of a small roadster will work for Porsche."
Porsche says no baby Boxster, no rush on Pajun originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 14 May 2012 11:30:00 EST.
German car magazine Auto Bild reports Porsche is planning build a sedan that will slot below the Panamera and compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Citing no sources (so a grain of salt is recommended), the magazine claims the four-door, codenamed Pajun, will cost no less than $84,000 and be ready for production no later than 2017.

In September 2011, Car claimed the Pajun could spawn coupe, convertible and even a shooting brake variant. Back then, rumors swirled about powertrain options that included a 550-horsepower V6, 600-hp V8, plug-in hybrid and an Audi-sourced diesel.

Hopefully, Porsche is also working expeditiously to find a better name than Pajun, which in Korea is a seafood pancake, in Finnish it means willow, and, according to Google's translation, in Welsh it means - wait for it - Cajun. That's the name Porsche was using to refer to its smaller-than-Cayenne SUV before changing it to Macan in February. Clever coincidence.
Porsche plans E-Class competitor, codename Pajun originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 10 May 2012 14:29:00 EST.
Porsche offers its Panamera to North American buyers in no fewer than eight models with six different engine choices, including a hybrid. There's even an oil-burning diesel model available across the Pond. At one end of the spectrum is the entry-level Panamera with a very capable 300-horsepower V6. At the other end, and at the top of the pecking order, is the Panamera Turbo S, boasting a 550-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8. Not only is it the most powerful street-legal Porsche on offer, but it is the world's quickest four-door sedan. Err... hatchback.

So others are aware of the Panamera's potential, Porsche reserves its coveted 'Turbo' script only for its most capable vehicles. It is indeed a badge of honor. However, the ante is upped even further when a small scripted 'S' is adhered as a suffix. Its addition indicates to all others that the overall performance has been boosted to flagship levels - it is a tiny yet bold badge of bravado.

To help us solve the riddle of whether or not the Panamera Turbo S is more than just an exercise in demonstrating masculine superiority within ones social circle, Porsche deposited a stunning Aqua Blue Metallic example in our driveway for a week. It was our job to put the $195,000, four-passenger neck-snapper to the test and somehow avoid filling its glovebox with citations in the process.
Continue reading 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S [w/video]

2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 May 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Some automakers roll out a new model and that's pretty much it, while for others, a new model's introduction is just the starting point. Porsche most definitely falls in the latter category. When a new 911 rolls out, for example, you can bet there will be a dozen or more versions to follow. A new Boxster? Slap a roof on it and in another year or so you've got a new Cayman. So it only stands to reason that the German automaker would do the same with its more family-oriented offerings, the Panamera and Cayenne.

Automobile magazine's European bureau reports that, when Porsche rolls out a restyled Panamera next year, the four-door model will yield the variants that the current model does not. That will likely include a long-wheelbase model for the Chinese market, as well as a potential shooting brake and a possible four-seat cabriolet.

A slant-back version of the Cayenne is also said to be in the works to take on the BMW X6, with a new Cayman to put a roof over the new Boxster's head later this year and a generous array of 911 variants to come out year after year. Couple all those spin-offs with the new Macan crossover, the Pajun (baby Panamera) and a pair of new supercars (918 and 960) to slot in above the 911 range and they're suddenly looking very busy at Zuffenhausen over the next few years.
Porsche gearing up to roll out the variants originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 09:00:00 EST. Automotive News reports Porsche is hard at work on a plug-in hybrid version of its Panamera. According to unnamed sources, the vehicle is likely to begin production in 2014 and will be destined for the U.S. market. The move is part of a larger plug-in offensive from Volkswagen. VW owns 49.9 percent of Porsche and plans to debut electrified versions of its Audi Q7 and A3 as well as the European Passat. Those vehicles will reportedly trickle to market between 2014 and 2015. An all-electric Golf is also due in 2013.

Volkswagen has already made it clear the company believes the future of green driving lies in diesels and plug-in hybrids, saying the latter combines the best elements of electric propulsion and internal combustion without the compromises of a hybrid. So, why introduce plug-ins in the automaker's luxury brands? Volkswagen claims high-end buyers are more likely to take long trips, and thus need the range-extending capability of an internal combustion engine as well. Us? We think it's easier for well-heeled buyers to absorb the technology's cost premium in their already higher MSRPs.
Porsche Panamera to get plug-in model for 2014? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Mar 2012 08:30:00 EST.
If there are words for the Gemballa Tornado and the vehicle's spiritual twin, the Mistrale, we can't find them.

If you like air vents, the Tornado has you covered. The vehicle boasts more intakes than your favorite industrial air conditioner, with the majority of them crafted from carbon fiber. At least the bodywork is lightweight. The <strike>abomination</strike> creation, based loosely on what was once a Porsche Cayenne, puts a lofty 721 horsepower to the ground and relies on a set of aggressive Brembo brakes to bring the party to a stop.

And what of the Mistrale? As much as we love the Porsche Panamera, the car certainly didn't need another go-around with the ugly stick. Like the Tornado, the Mistrale boasts a slew of carbon fiber work, epic 22-inch forged alloy wheels and and a completely reworked interior. Buyers can expect to find the same 721 horsepower under the hood, too. And here you thought SEMA was the only place to this level of insanity.
Gemballa Tornado and Mistrale are the faces of excess originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 11:19:00 EST.
