A Small-Scripted S Delivers Power, Performance And Pomposity

Porsche offers its Panamera to North American buyers in no fewer than eight models with six different engine choices, including a hybrid. There's even an oil-burning diesel model available across the Pond. At one end of the spectrum is the entry-level Panamera with a very capable 300-horsepower V6. At the other end, and at the top of the pecking order, is the Panamera Turbo S, boasting a 550-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8. Not only is it the most powerful street-legal Porsche on offer, but it is the world's quickest four-door sedan. Err... hatchback.

So others are aware of the Panamera's potential, Porsche reserves its coveted 'Turbo' script only for its most capable vehicles. It is indeed a badge of honor. However, the ante is upped even further when a small scripted 'S' is adhered as a suffix. Its addition indicates to all others that the overall performance has been boosted to flagship levels - it is a tiny yet bold badge of bravado.

To help us solve the riddle of whether or not the Panamera Turbo S is more than just an exercise in demonstrating masculine superiority within ones social circle, Porsche deposited a stunning Aqua Blue Metallic example in our driveway for a week. It was our job to put the $195,000, four-passenger neck-snapper to the test and somehow avoid filling its glovebox with citations in the process.

Man, that 494-horsepower Porsche Panamera Turbo you're driving is hot. The best $136,700 you ever spent, eh? Geeze, you even got the $2,440 Sport Chrono Pack Plus, so those 60 mph runs must flash by in 4.0 seconds flat, sometimes less, thanks in no small part to the 567 pound-feet of torque overboost. Damn. There isn't a four-door out there that can even come close. You're the king of the county, sir.

A stop sign appears in the middle of nowhere, and it's time for some safe Launch Control excitement. It would have been nice to opt for the Sport exhaust, yeah, but who needs it? Silly Porsche price-gouging options lists. Pshaw.

But hang on - what just pulled up alongside? Hold on here... another Panamera? And it sounds different. Oh, crap, those 20-inch 911 Turbo II wheels are wrapped in specially concocted performance tires with sidewalls that just read "Michelin." And its got Porsche Exclusive side skirts, thick black-lacquered window trims, and that exhaust. Oh, maaaaaan, it's the Panamera Turbo S you read about. The one with 543 horses and 590 lb-ft of overboost torque. They keep blipping the throttle, too, like they want to play. The whole car is shaking like a bull in the stall at a rodeo. With the specific Sport Chrono Turbo fitted as standard, they say it'll scorch the 60-mph run easily in just 3.6 seconds.

Just let 'em go first.

Porsche has rolled its new Panamera Turbo S into the Jacob Javits Center for the start of today's New York Auto Show, offering us our first live view of the new range-topping sedan. As we told you last month, the four-passenger Porsche boasts the same twin-turbocharged 4.8-liter V8 as the standard Cayenne Turbo model, but new turbochargers (with titanium-aluminum turbines) and some engine remapping bumps output to 550 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. When the driver selects "Sport" or "Sport Plus" mode (the Sport Chrono package is standard), the ECU will allow overboost to 590 pound-feet of torque. With standard all-wheel drive, Porsche says the Panamera Turbo S will sprint to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds (knowing Porsche, that's conservative) and deliver a terminal velocity of 190 mph.

In addition to the new "S" scripting on the rear hatchback, the flagship model is differentiated by new 20-inch Turbo II wheels (with increased rear axle track width) and standard side skirts pulled from the Porsche Exclusive options list. The interior features standard bi-color leather upholstery (black/cream is an exclusive Turbo S combo) and Agate Gray Metallic is a new exclusive exterior color. Base price of the world's quickest sedan is $173,000 (plus $975 delivery and destination). The Porsche Panamera Turbo S goes on sale this Spring.

We reported yesterday that a Panamera Turbo S could be in the works with an official debut coming at the New York Auto Show in April. We didn't have to wait long to find out, as Porsche has released the first details about its new flagship four-door.

As expected, the Turbo S gets a power increase up to 550 horsepower, 50 more than the standard Turbo model, thanks to new twin turbochargers with enhanced turbines and modified engine programming. Torque is also up, 553 lb-ft compared to 516 lb-ft. Porsche says that the Panamera Turbo S is capable of reaching 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds as well as a top speed of 190 mph, all while returning an estimated 15/23 mpg. The car will reach showrooms later this Spring, with pricing in the U.S. starting at $173,200. Porsche is reportedly working on a new range-topping Turbo S version of its four-door Panamera. Much like the Turbo S versions of the 911 and Cayenne, this would likely mean a bump in power is in order, as well as tweaked design elements and some additional standard equipment.

Autoblog.it reports that the Panamera Turbo S is expected to produce around 550 horsepower - 50 hp more than the 'base' Turbo. Torque output is also pegged to increase from 516 pound-feet (or 568 lb-ft with the Sport Chrono Turbo pack) to around 590 lb-ft. Thus, the Panamera Turbo S should sprint to 62 miles per hour in around 3.8 seconds.

Rumors suggest that Porsche could debut its Panamera Turbo S as early as April at either the New York Auto Show or the Shanghai Motor Show. Based on the price premium the 911 Turbo S commands over the 911 Turbo, we expect the mooted Panamera Turbo S to be priced somewhere around the $160,000 mark.
