Pagani - or at least the people who sell their cars - want us all to believe that driving the Huayra is an awful lot like making out with some lusty, barely dressed 20-something. They may very well have a point there, but it's been a minute since we locked lips with anything pushing 730 horsepower to the rear wheels via the breathy bark of a V12 engine, so what do we know? The video below comes from Prestige Imports of Miami, and it spends its time meandering between shots of the Italian hypercar and the tanned hides of a frisky young couple rolling in the hay. Throw in some epic music and a similarly epic voiceover, and you've pretty much got the whole overwrought shebang.

Not that we're complaining. We'll take any chance we can get to pour our eyes over the mechanical insanity that is the Huayra. And, you know, the extra shots don't necessarily cause us any consternation either. See what we mean by watching the God of Wind video short below, but beware, it might be mildly Not Safe For Work.

Continue reading Pagani Huayra God of Wind short film is overwrought but still beautiful to behold

Pagani Huayra God of Wind short film is overwrought but still beautiful to behold originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Mar 2013 19:58:00 EST.
Along with a mysterious Track Pack for the Pagani Huayra, the Italian builder of deliciously crafted supercars announced a partnership with Sonus Faber, Italian builders of deliciously crafted speakers, at the Geneva Motor Show. Pagani didn't reveal how many speakers the Sonus Faber kit has, but did tell us that at 1,200 watts it's three times as powerful as the previous audio system.

Known for items like its Aida and The Sonus Faber loudspeakers that can cost anywhere from $20,000 to 200,000 per pair - yes, $200,000 per pair - Sonus Faber is just as devoted to design as Horacio himself. That's why the avional and gunmetal aluminum alloy housings and the lightweight carbon cones in the speakers in the image above look like they could have come from George Clinton's ParliaFunkadelic spaceship or, well, the back of a Huayra.

Pagani says this is the "first step of a partnership between two iconic brands." We've no idea what's coming next, but you can be sure this first step will be stupendously expensive. More details, if you need them, can be found in the press release below.
Continue reading Pagani and Sonus Faber ink deal for high-end Huayra audio system

Pagani and Sonus Faber ink deal for high-end Huayra audio system originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Mar 2013 08:44:00 EST.
The season premiere of Top Gear aired last night in the UK, and did so in typical Top Gear fashion. We've yet to see the episode for ourselves (it's available via Final Gear on bittorrent, and as we reported earlier, will air on BBC America in the US just a week from now on February 4), but reports are coming in that a new record was set on the Top Gear Test Track by the Pagani Huayra.

Piloted by The Stig, the Huayra reportedly posted a time of just 1:13.8. It's remarkable, really, given that the car it displaced atop the rankings was the Ariel Atom V8 500, which it beat by a full 1.3 seconds.

Scroll below to watch the power lap performed by The Stig for yourself. The lap starts at the end of the first video and continues at the beginning of the second. Hurry up and click play, though, as we don't except these to be up on YouTube for much longer.
Continue reading Pagani Huayra sets new Top Gear Test Track record in season premiere

Pagani Huayra sets new Top Gear Test Track record in season premiere originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 28 Jan 2013 12:33:00 EST.
EVO has come out with another gotta-watch-it video, throwing its 2012 Car of the Year contestants around the UK's 1.5-mile Blyton Park track. It's actually a 15-minute teaser for the full-length DVD detailing the magazine's Car of the Year selection, but the tease is worth every <strike>penny</strike> free second.

Tiff Needell and sports car racer Richard Meaden handle the wheel duties, the two driving five pairs of sports cars: Lotus Exige S vs. Porsche Boxster S, Morgan Three-Wheeler vs. Toyota GT86, BMW M135i vs. Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series vs. Alpina B3 GT3, the marquee event pits the McLaren MP4-12C vs. the Pagani Huayra. After a head-to-head lap with commentary during drifts, Meaden takes each car out to set a representative lap time.

You'll find the verdicts, lots of tire smoke, and lines like "Anything you can do sideways I can do sideways" in the video below.
Continue reading EVO "2012 Car of the Year: The Track Battles" is a sports car salmagundi

EVO "2012 Car of the Year: The Track Battles" is a sports car salmagundi originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Nov 2012 17:30:00 EST.
It feels wrong to be asking this question after another inspiring visit to Pagani Automobili in San Cesario sul Panaro, Italy: Where on Earth do they get the money to do all this at such a high level? The answer to this question is most certainly really long and, I would like to believe, swathed in at least a little dark intrigue. I'm also certain that it's none of my damned business.

For some reason, I never seem to find myself asking the same question after visiting Koenigsegg on the southwest coast of Sweden or Morgan in westernmost England. Even though Christian von Koenigsegg's operation comes closest in kind to what Horacio Pagani is doing, the Swedes do it with a very different attitude, and up north there is always that sense of a close-to-the-bone shop pushing to build the next pair of amazing $1.5-million Agera supercars. As for Morgan, when I go there I am made so drunken by the artisanal works involved in building a $40,000 3-Wheeler that I just forget to even imagine anything as sobering as the company's finances.

Maybe my inquiring mind regarding Pagani is due to the fact that they plan on building 40 units of the Huayra each year starting on January 1, 2013. That's veritable mass production for the Italians, and they've sold over 3.5 years' worth already. This, for a model whose base version starts north of $1.2 million.
Continue reading 2013 Pagani Huayra [w/video]

2013 Pagani Huayra [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 11:57:00 EST.
McCall's Motorworks Revival has officially kicked off the festivities in Monterey, California. This year, attendees were treated to a buffet of lust-worthy metal both new and old, including one very special treat. CSX2000, the very first Shebly Cobra assembled by Carroll Shelby himself, drove in under its own power and a distinguished cloud of oil smoke. Long live the snake. Two historically-significant Ford GT40 models showed up on the tarmac as well, including the very first MKI road car ever produced and the very last MK1 race car ever built.

If those aren't good enough to get your mouth watering, the oldest Corvette Stingray in existence stopped by to rub elbows with the personal jets on the runway as well. The third Stingray constructed, the '63 Convertible boasts hand-laid fiberglass and a 327-cube V8 under the hood.

It wasn't all old American metal, though. Both Ferrari and Lamborghini showed up with some of their more lust-worthy hardware, as did Koenigsegg, though it was Pagani that stole the show. The Italian automaker displayed two Huayra models. You know, in case you somehow managed to miss one of them. Check out the full gallery above for a taste of the action.
McCall's Motorworks Revival kicks off the Monterey weekend in style originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Aug 2012 12:44:00 EST.
Chris Harris took himself to Modena for an afternoon test drive in the Pagani Huayra. To watch him panting after a spell up some twisty roads, you'd have thought he'd gone for some afternoon delight. It's the most breathless we've ever seen Mr. Harris, and for all the right reasons - perhaps it shouldn't be surprising when he's intentionally getting loosey-goosey in a coupe with an AMG-sourced twin-turbo V12 trying to put down 730 horsepower and 735 pound-feet of torque on some roads as thin as an olive branch.

He agrees with the recent review from EVO that the Huayra is truly sorted in the speed and suspension department, and he does decree the steering slow for the esses he's navigating, but unlike EVO, he loves the gearbox and he pulls off his review without any unfortunate squeaking.

And he loves the car. And its thrills. Check them all out in the video below.
Continue reading Chris Harris wrings out Pagani Huayra in Modena

Chris Harris wrings out Pagani Huayra in Modena originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 12:45:00 EST.
If you thought Pagani had replaced the Zonda with the Huayra, think again. The Modenese purveyor of the most exotic of supercars is apparently willing to continue building Zondas for moneyed buyers who still want them. And far from simply continuing the model it had, Pagani has been further developing the Zonda into ever-more extreme variants.

The latest, according to GTSpirit, will be the Zonda R Evo, a model Pagani is expected to bring to the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed. The track-only model would, if speculation manifests, combine the best features of the existing Zonda R (pictured above) with the output of the latest Zonda 760 RS. That means competition-spec suspension, brakes, aero and rolling stock with a 760-horsepower incarnation of the V12 built for Pagani by Mercedes AMG. That, for comparison's sake, is within spitting distance of twice the output of the original Zonda C12 that hit unsuspecting roads at the turn of the millennium.

With that much juice, the Zonda R Evo is tipped to hit 62 mph in under 2.7 seconds and bag a top speed of more than 218 mph. Former Formula One driver and multiple DTM champion Bernd Schneider is expected to drive the ultimate-Zonda-to-date up the hill at the Earl of March's estate at the end of the month.
Pagani to debut ultimate Zonda R Evo at Goodwood originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Jun 2012 11:29:00 EST.
Over the last couple of decades, we've seen countless attempts by startups looking to crack the supercar establishment. Predictably, the intenders have enjoyed and suffered wildly varying degrees of success. Some, like SSC North America, have attempted to get the attention of the world's plutocrats through sheer speed, while others, like Spyker, have attempted to gain access to the world's wealth through Ming The Merciless design. Nearly all have brought something new to the table, but essentially no new brands have managed to join the pantheon of hypercar royalty founded by Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche. Well, nobody except for Pagani. If Horatio and friends don't yet have a seat at the table, they are certainly building the best case for admission, first with a seemingly endless stream of Zonda variants and now with this new Huayra.

The Huayra may have debuted a year ago, but the Modena-based automaker has been a bit skinflint with driving opportunities as it works the kinks out. In fact, the video drive shown above from the UK's EVO is the first full-on road test we're aware of. As we've seen and heard previously, the 730-horsepower Huayra looks the business, but we've been waiting for behind-the-wheel impressions.

According to EVO, the Huayra feels properly fast and engaging, yet it manages to deliver a stable, supple ride without feeling "old mannish." The throttle response from the AMG-sourced 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 is excellent, but the seven-speed single-clutch flappy-paddle gearbox has its fair share of low-speed refinement issues and the steering is chastised for being a bit slow and heavy. Judging from the audio in the video from about 56 seconds in, it also appears to have its fair share of squeaks, though it could be an early build car, or the noises could simply be from the video camera mount.

Regardless, the Huayra looks to be an impressive new baseline for the marque, and given Pagani's penchant for constant improvement as shown in its Zonda predecessor, we predict the this silver bolide will be a thorn in the establishment's side for many years to come. Scroll down to watch all the action.

Evo founder Harry Metcalfe somehow convinced Pagani to let him take the Zonda 760 RS for a spin, and the result is just another day in the life of an Evo editorial director. The 760-horsepower customer special is, according to Metcalfe, for those who aren't happy with the 'regular' Zonda's 650 horsepower and really want a Zonda R for the road... plus 20 more horses.

We'd tell you more, but you really should get straight into the video. The details on the 760 RS are fantastic, but the engine note is, how you say, stupefecante. Scroll down to enjoy.
Continue reading Visit Pagani's factory and drive the Zonda 760RS with EVO

Visit Pagani's factory and drive the Zonda 760RS with EVO originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Apr 2012 15:29:00 EST.
One day, someone will make a list of all the unique special-edition Pagani Zonda models and all the one-off Bugatti Veyron one-offs produced over the past few years. It'll be a gargantuan task, because there have been many of each, and we suspect that we only hear about some of them. And you can bet that most of the buyers ordering them have little to no idea how to get the most out of their new rides. However, if new reports prove accurate, the Modenese atelier's latest customer sure will.

That customer, according to reports, is one Lewis Hamilton. The 2008 Formula One World Champion has reportedly ordered his Zonda (dubbed 760 LH) with 760 horsepower - the same output as the 760 RS we reported on a couple of weeks ago - 20 more than the track-spec Zonda R and 90 than the Zonda Cinque. And what else did Lewis ask for on his? A manual transmission. Apparently he has enough time with paddle-shift gearboxes at work. Solid.

In addition to the McLaren grand prix cars he drives "at the office," Hamilton's also got a very rare McLaren F1 LM that was a gift from his employers upon clinching the World Championship, and something tells us that he's got a new MP4-12C waiting for him at home, too. Bringing a Zonda home, then, to park beside them would be high praise indeed.
Lewis Hamilton orders custom Pagani Zonda with 760 HP and manual gearbox originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Apr 2012 18:31:00 EST.
One might suppose that since Pagani came out with the Huayra, the Zonda would go the way of the dodo. But as the Modenese automaker has said all along, if someone wants to buy a Zonda, it'll gladly make one for them. And so it has with the very latest one-off supercar.

Called the 760 RS, it's the most powerful Zonda that Pagani has ever built. With 760 horsepower squeezed out of the AMG-built V12 engine underneath that bespoke carbon fiber rear hood, it's got 90 more horsepower than the Zonda Cinque and 20 more than the track-bound, hardcore Zonda R. As such, it's said to be good for a 217-mile-per-hour top end.

The Zonda 760 RS reportedly started out as the Zonda 750, ordered and then canceled by an undisclosed Arabian customer. Pagani turned it into the 760 RS and found a new buyer (said to be in either China or Chile), and while pictures and details have been scarce, this video footage has surfaced giving us a glimpse at the custom supercar. Scroll down to check it out for yourself.
Continue reading Zonda 760 RS is the most powerful Pagani yet

Zonda 760 RS is the most powerful Pagani yet originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Apr 2012 19:20:00 EST.
A few years ago, we brought you a report on the speculative values of Pagani supercars. Whether as investments or frivolous purchases, those with the means, it seemed, were paying well above list price to get their hands on one of the rarest supercars on (or off) the market. But that was just as the world was on the brink of financial collapse. Surely with the global economy still in the drink years later, nobody's paying those kinds of figures for something as extravagant as an exotic supercar... right?

Wrong. In fact, it seems, the value for Pagani models has only gone up. According to Evo magazine editor-in-chief (and Zonda owner) Harry Metcalfe, buyers with the means are paying as much as double the already grandiose list price to get their hands on a Zonda or Huayra. Apparently the white Huayra that Pagani displayed at the Geneva Motor Show never reached the Middle Eastern buyer who ordered it a year prior and was supposed to take delivery after the show, having flipped it to another buyer who was willing to pay him an astounding 1.8 million euros for the car. That's $2.35 million in American greenbacks, or twice the 900,000 euro ($1.18m) list price.

Think that was an isolated incident? Hardly. A Zonda F Roadster (said to be the last ever made), a 2008 Zonda F coupe and a used Zonda C12S were all, according to Metcalfe's sources, recently sold for double their MSRPs. So if you've been scrimping and saving every dime to get your hands on a Pagani, better keep saving.
Pagani supercars selling for double their million-dollar list prices? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Apr 2012 11:00:00 EST.
If you appreciate cost-no-object supercars - or cost-no-object anything, for that matter - then you'll want to dig into the video after the jump. Pagani put together a 14-minute mini-documentary that reveals the finer details of its latest work, the Huayra.

The Huayra is more than just a sexy carbon and titanium body. The film visits the companies that help make Pagani's coupe a 230-mile-per-hour rocket, like ASPA in Italy that spends an entire day milling just the logo, Formula One supplier MHG that makes the titanium exhaust, and the AMG engine-making facility where the Huayra's turbocharged, 6.0-liter V12 is built by hand.

If nothing else, after watching the doc you'll finally know how to pronounce the name of the car. Watch the video below to see the show.
Continue reading Pagani documentary tells the story of the Huayra

Pagani documentary tells the story of the Huayra originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Mar 2012 19:21:00 EST.
When American automakers release Carbon editions of their sports cars, buyers are treated to a few carbon fiber veneers, some fancy wheels and a few badges. When Pagani builds a Huayra Carbon Edition, the Italian manufacturer simply constructs every last piece of body work out of the composite and slathers everything in clear coat.

Pagani unveiled its latest sculpture at the Geneva Motor Show this week, and the vehicle is very possibly the definition of sinister sexy. Buyers can look forward to enjoying the same lethal drivetrain found in the "base" Huayra, which means there's a 700-horsepower AMG-sourced 6.0-liter V12 behind the seats.

While the standard Huayra boasts a carbon-titanium monocoque, the wild carbon fiber body work on the Carbon Edition is something new entirely. We dig it in every way possible.
Pagani Huayra Carbon Edition is all things right in the world originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 12:42:00 EST.
First introduced way back in 1999, the Pagani Zonda has had a nice long run. Twelve years, to be precise. Now the Huayra - also named after a wind, like its predecessor and so many Volkswagen models (Scirocco, Passat, Bora, etc.) - is upon us. But before the Zonda speeds off into the sunset, Pagani had to finish fulfilling orders for the outgoing model.

While we can't say for sure that what you see here is the very last Zonda, we can tell you it is the last Zonda F Roadster - one of the ultimate expressions of the original, with the 600-horsepower 7.3-liter AMG V12 and an open roof.

This last of the 25 units built is decked out in purple carbon fiber and is being delivered to one very extroverted customer in Ukraine. We think we may have found where the Joker has been hiding all this time.
Final Pagani Zonda F Roadster delivered to Ukraine originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Oct 2011 18:32:00 EST.
Proving yet again that there's simply nothing in the automotive world that comedian, late night talk show host and genuinely nice guy Jay Leno can't get his hands on is the video you'll see after the break.

This week, Jay welcomes Horatio Pagani into his garage, and the man who heads his own eponymous automaker brought along a brand spankin' new Huayra for show-and-tell. Perhaps best of all (since we obviously didn't get to drive it ourselves), we now know the proper way to say Huayra: Why-ra.

Pagani tells us that, while the Zonda was inspired by Le Mans racing cars, the Huayra draws its inspiration from the moment an aircraft leaves the tarmac and begins to take flight. We have to admit, from the way the doors open like the portal into an aircraft to the wing-like splitters at the rear and the airfoil-shaped side mirrors, we can see clear evidence of aeronautical design in the Huayra.

That said, it's impossible to truly appreciate how special this latest Pagani is until you gaze upon its exquisitely crafted interior. Leather, bare aluminum and carbon fiber surround the driver and passenger in what we think may be the most impressive single element of the Huayra's look and feel. Well, that and those amazing wheel hubs. Oh, and the sound it makes when the turbochargers kick in. Guess the entire thing is pretty impressive, eh?

Do yourself a favor and watch the entire video after the break, it's worth it.
Continue reading Jay Leno's Garage welcomes Pagani Huayra and Pagani himself

Jay Leno's Garage welcomes Pagani Huayra and Pagani himself originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 20:28:00 EST.
When your supercar approaches the seven-figure range cost range, you expect everything to wow you. Most automakers accomplish this feat except in a few small details, one of which is the very tool you use to bring your powerful engine to life: the key. Horacio Pagani didn't overlook this detail when bringing his Huayra into the world, and the car comes with a key that's nearly as cool as the machine it plugs into.

Composed of the same aluminum as the wheels on the Huayra, the Pagani key is a miniature model of the vehicle. The key splits into two halves, one of which is used in the ignition while the other has a USB stick to hold music for the audio system.

The supercar-loving lads from eGarage.com caught up with Mr. Pagani at Pebble Beach, where they were given a quick overview on the key. They captured it on video, and you can check it out by clicking past the jump.
Continue reading Horacio Pagani shows eGarage the key to a Huayra

Horacio Pagani shows eGarage the key to a Huayra originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Sep 2011 12:32:00 EST.
The Zonda may be old news with Pagani beginning production of its new supercar, the Huayra, but that doesn't mean that it's lost its place in our hearts. That's why when Pagani brought out a Zonda R last night to McCall's Motorworks Revival at the Monterey Jet Center, we ogled over every square inch of the carbon fiber bodywork.

No, the Zonda R might not be the most beautiful iteration of the supercar that Pagani has built over the past ten years, but it's perhaps the most visually stunning. Truly, if any car really did look like the Batmobile, it's this.

Hold your horses, ladies and gents. All 700 of them. It appears that earlier reports of the Pagani Huayra's exclusion from the U.S. market may have been a tad premature.

As you may recall, we reported yesterday on a ruling from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that denied Pagani its application for exemption from certain airbag regulations. The assumption was that this would put a big damper on Pagani's plans to enter the American market, but if the latest reports prove accurate, that now appears to be little more than a speed bump. And as little as exotic supercars and their drivers like speed bumps, they can, one way or another, be overcome.

According to GTSpirit, Pagani appears to have been prepared for the NHTSA's refusal. The application had been submitted some three years ago, and since Pagani Automobili had not received a reply until now, it had already begun work on the advanced air bags as required. The request - such as had been granted to other niche supercar manufacturers - was simply to give Pagani some extra time to implement the rules and allow it to sell in the U.S. in the meantime. Clever.

Reports highlight just how far Pagani has gone to heighten the safety measures in the new Huayra with such features as a carbon-titanium passenger tub from which the rear subframe breaks off in the event of a catastrophic crash, and a fuel system that cuts off pressure if the fuel line is severed. In other words, over and above what NHTSA mandates.

The rigorous application of the advanced airbag regulations may mean that Pagani's planned deliveries for late 2012 could be pushed back to early 2013, but one way or another, Pagani is determined to sell here in the United States. And given the speeds of which its cars are capable, we wouldn't count on them arriving too late, either.
Pagani Huayra still coming to U.S., just delayed until 2013 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 10:27:00 EST.
