McCall's Motorworks Revival has officially kicked off the festivities in Monterey, California. This year, attendees were treated to a buffet of lust-worthy metal both new and old, including one very special treat. CSX2000, the very first Shebly Cobra assembled by Carroll Shelby himself, drove in under its own power and a distinguished cloud of oil smoke. Long live the snake. Two historically-significant Ford GT40 models showed up on the tarmac as well, including the very first MKI road car ever produced and the very last MK1 race car ever built.

If those aren't good enough to get your mouth watering, the oldest Corvette Stingray in existence stopped by to rub elbows with the personal jets on the runway as well. The third Stingray constructed, the '63 Convertible boasts hand-laid fiberglass and a 327-cube V8 under the hood.

It wasn't all old American metal, though. Both Ferrari and Lamborghini showed up with some of their more lust-worthy hardware, as did Koenigsegg, though it was Pagani that stole the show. The Italian automaker displayed two Huayra models. You know, in case you somehow managed to miss one of them. Check out the full gallery above for a taste of the action.
McCall's Motorworks Revival kicks off the Monterey weekend in style originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Aug 2012 12:44:00 EST.
Chris Harris took himself to Modena for an afternoon test drive in the Pagani Huayra. To watch him panting after a spell up some twisty roads, you'd have thought he'd gone for some afternoon delight. It's the most breathless we've ever seen Mr. Harris, and for all the right reasons - perhaps it shouldn't be surprising when he's intentionally getting loosey-goosey in a coupe with an AMG-sourced twin-turbo V12 trying to put down 730 horsepower and 735 pound-feet of torque on some roads as thin as an olive branch.

He agrees with the recent review from EVO that the Huayra is truly sorted in the speed and suspension department, and he does decree the steering slow for the esses he's navigating, but unlike EVO, he loves the gearbox and he pulls off his review without any unfortunate squeaking.

And he loves the car. And its thrills. Check them all out in the video below.
Continue reading Chris Harris wrings out Pagani Huayra in Modena

Chris Harris wrings out Pagani Huayra in Modena originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 12:45:00 EST.
Over the last couple of decades, we've seen countless attempts by startups looking to crack the supercar establishment. Predictably, the intenders have enjoyed and suffered wildly varying degrees of success. Some, like SSC North America, have attempted to get the attention of the world's plutocrats through sheer speed, while others, like Spyker, have attempted to gain access to the world's wealth through Ming The Merciless design. Nearly all have brought something new to the table, but essentially no new brands have managed to join the pantheon of hypercar royalty founded by Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche. Well, nobody except for Pagani. If Horatio and friends don't yet have a seat at the table, they are certainly building the best case for admission, first with a seemingly endless stream of Zonda variants and now with this new Huayra.

The Huayra may have debuted a year ago, but the Modena-based automaker has been a bit skinflint with driving opportunities as it works the kinks out. In fact, the video drive shown above from the UK's EVO is the first full-on road test we're aware of. As we've seen and heard previously, the 730-horsepower Huayra looks the business, but we've been waiting for behind-the-wheel impressions.

According to EVO, the Huayra feels properly fast and engaging, yet it manages to deliver a stable, supple ride without feeling "old mannish." The throttle response from the AMG-sourced 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 is excellent, but the seven-speed single-clutch flappy-paddle gearbox has its fair share of low-speed refinement issues and the steering is chastised for being a bit slow and heavy. Judging from the audio in the video from about 56 seconds in, it also appears to have its fair share of squeaks, though it could be an early build car, or the noises could simply be from the video camera mount.

Regardless, the Huayra looks to be an impressive new baseline for the marque, and given Pagani's penchant for constant improvement as shown in its Zonda predecessor, we predict the this silver bolide will be a thorn in the establishment's side for many years to come. Scroll down to watch all the action.

A few years ago, we brought you a report on the speculative values of Pagani supercars. Whether as investments or frivolous purchases, those with the means, it seemed, were paying well above list price to get their hands on one of the rarest supercars on (or off) the market. But that was just as the world was on the brink of financial collapse. Surely with the global economy still in the drink years later, nobody's paying those kinds of figures for something as extravagant as an exotic supercar... right?

Wrong. In fact, it seems, the value for Pagani models has only gone up. According to Evo magazine editor-in-chief (and Zonda owner) Harry Metcalfe, buyers with the means are paying as much as double the already grandiose list price to get their hands on a Zonda or Huayra. Apparently the white Huayra that Pagani displayed at the Geneva Motor Show never reached the Middle Eastern buyer who ordered it a year prior and was supposed to take delivery after the show, having flipped it to another buyer who was willing to pay him an astounding 1.8 million euros for the car. That's $2.35 million in American greenbacks, or twice the 900,000 euro ($1.18m) list price.

Think that was an isolated incident? Hardly. A Zonda F Roadster (said to be the last ever made), a 2008 Zonda F coupe and a used Zonda C12S were all, according to Metcalfe's sources, recently sold for double their MSRPs. So if you've been scrimping and saving every dime to get your hands on a Pagani, better keep saving.
Pagani supercars selling for double their million-dollar list prices? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Apr 2012 11:00:00 EST.
If you appreciate cost-no-object supercars - or cost-no-object anything, for that matter - then you'll want to dig into the video after the jump. Pagani put together a 14-minute mini-documentary that reveals the finer details of its latest work, the Huayra.

The Huayra is more than just a sexy carbon and titanium body. The film visits the companies that help make Pagani's coupe a 230-mile-per-hour rocket, like ASPA in Italy that spends an entire day milling just the logo, Formula One supplier MHG that makes the titanium exhaust, and the AMG engine-making facility where the Huayra's turbocharged, 6.0-liter V12 is built by hand.

If nothing else, after watching the doc you'll finally know how to pronounce the name of the car. Watch the video below to see the show.
Continue reading Pagani documentary tells the story of the Huayra

Pagani documentary tells the story of the Huayra originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Mar 2012 19:21:00 EST.
Proving yet again that there's simply nothing in the automotive world that comedian, late night talk show host and genuinely nice guy Jay Leno can't get his hands on is the video you'll see after the break.

This week, Jay welcomes Horatio Pagani into his garage, and the man who heads his own eponymous automaker brought along a brand spankin' new Huayra for show-and-tell. Perhaps best of all (since we obviously didn't get to drive it ourselves), we now know the proper way to say Huayra: Why-ra.

Pagani tells us that, while the Zonda was inspired by Le Mans racing cars, the Huayra draws its inspiration from the moment an aircraft leaves the tarmac and begins to take flight. We have to admit, from the way the doors open like the portal into an aircraft to the wing-like splitters at the rear and the airfoil-shaped side mirrors, we can see clear evidence of aeronautical design in the Huayra.

That said, it's impossible to truly appreciate how special this latest Pagani is until you gaze upon its exquisitely crafted interior. Leather, bare aluminum and carbon fiber surround the driver and passenger in what we think may be the most impressive single element of the Huayra's look and feel. Well, that and those amazing wheel hubs. Oh, and the sound it makes when the turbochargers kick in. Guess the entire thing is pretty impressive, eh?

Do yourself a favor and watch the entire video after the break, it's worth it.
Continue reading Jay Leno's Garage welcomes Pagani Huayra and Pagani himself

Jay Leno's Garage welcomes Pagani Huayra and Pagani himself originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 20:28:00 EST.
When your supercar approaches the seven-figure range cost range, you expect everything to wow you. Most automakers accomplish this feat except in a few small details, one of which is the very tool you use to bring your powerful engine to life: the key. Horacio Pagani didn't overlook this detail when bringing his Huayra into the world, and the car comes with a key that's nearly as cool as the machine it plugs into.

Composed of the same aluminum as the wheels on the Huayra, the Pagani key is a miniature model of the vehicle. The key splits into two halves, one of which is used in the ignition while the other has a USB stick to hold music for the audio system.

The supercar-loving lads from eGarage.com caught up with Mr. Pagani at Pebble Beach, where they were given a quick overview on the key. They captured it on video, and you can check it out by clicking past the jump.
Continue reading Horacio Pagani shows eGarage the key to a Huayra

Horacio Pagani shows eGarage the key to a Huayra originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Sep 2011 12:32:00 EST.
Hold your horses, ladies and gents. All 700 of them. It appears that earlier reports of the Pagani Huayra's exclusion from the U.S. market may have been a tad premature.

As you may recall, we reported yesterday on a ruling from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that denied Pagani its application for exemption from certain airbag regulations. The assumption was that this would put a big damper on Pagani's plans to enter the American market, but if the latest reports prove accurate, that now appears to be little more than a speed bump. And as little as exotic supercars and their drivers like speed bumps, they can, one way or another, be overcome.

According to GTSpirit, Pagani appears to have been prepared for the NHTSA's refusal. The application had been submitted some three years ago, and since Pagani Automobili had not received a reply until now, it had already begun work on the advanced air bags as required. The request - such as had been granted to other niche supercar manufacturers - was simply to give Pagani some extra time to implement the rules and allow it to sell in the U.S. in the meantime. Clever.

Reports highlight just how far Pagani has gone to heighten the safety measures in the new Huayra with such features as a carbon-titanium passenger tub from which the rear subframe breaks off in the event of a catastrophic crash, and a fuel system that cuts off pressure if the fuel line is severed. In other words, over and above what NHTSA mandates.

The rigorous application of the advanced airbag regulations may mean that Pagani's planned deliveries for late 2012 could be pushed back to early 2013, but one way or another, Pagani is determined to sell here in the United States. And given the speeds of which its cars are capable, we wouldn't count on them arriving too late, either.
Pagani Huayra still coming to U.S., just delayed until 2013 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 10:27:00 EST. Episode #242 of the Autoblog Podcast is here. This week, Chris and Dan are joined by John McElroy, long-time host of Autoline Detroit, Autoblog columnist and a fixture to listeners of WWJ. We start by getting our supercar fix, mulling the Pagani Huyara and its eventual move to the U.S. market. From there, we bring some informed analysis to General Motors regaining the largest automaker crown from Toyota and discuss the newly-confirmed Cadillac XTS and ATS. Your questions and comments power the last third of the podcast, and for those of you who hung with us live on our UStream channel, thanks for taking the time. We've embedded our Q&A module after the jump for you to scroll through and follow along, too. Thanks for listening!

If you've already placed your order for one of the fifteen examples of the Pagani Huayra set to reach American shores, you might either be getting your check back in the mail or asked for a bigger one. As it turns out, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is giving Pagani a bit of a hard time.

Back in 2000, NHTSA established new guidelines for advanced air bags. All automakers had to comply with the regulations, but a few low-volume manufacturers like Tesla and Lamborghini were given exemptions. Pagani applied for a similar pass on the grounds that it didn't have the financial resources to develop such a system, but the administration has denied its request.

As a result, Pagani will either have to go back to the drawing board and develop - at a cost of around $5.7 million - the required advanced airbag system as required by the NHTSA to sell their car in the United States, or else skip out on this market as they did with the previous Zonda.

It certainly would be a shame if we had to admire the Italian supercar from afar like so many before it, but then again, given the immense velocity of which the Huayra is capable, maybe mandating the very best in safety technology isn't such a bad idea.
NHTSA denies Pagani Huayra airbag exemption for sale in U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 10:59:00 EST.
Pagani unveiled its new supercar, the Huayra, to the media at the Pasadena Art Center Colleage of Design this past week. The car was initially introduced to a world-wide audience at the Geneva Motor Show in March, but this is the first time the car has been seen on North American soil. In fact, this is the first time Pagani has officially brought any car to the United States despite producing its first supercar, the Zonda, for more for than a decade. Company founder Horacio Pagani said that the reason his company is only now beginning to sell cars in North America isn't for lack of potential customers. According to Pagani, there was actually quite a bit of interest in the car, but unlike other supercar makers, he is in no rush to expand too quickly.

"At the time, the production capacity was not enough to fulfill all the demand an inquiries that we got from our worldwide customers," he told us through his Italian translater. "The customers for these very special high end cars are very sophisticated, and when they come to Pagani they have to get not just a supercar but super attention and service together with the car. It's not easy to properly look after each of them, so this is why, step-by-step, we are developing new markets just to make sure that every new customer coming into the Pagani family is very well looked after and pampered by our staff and to meet every request."

Unfortunately, that attention to detail and customer service means that U.S. buyers will still have to wait a little longer before getting their cars. Horacio says that current customers need to be attended to before orders from new markets can be handled. "Pagani plans to enter the U.S. market only at the end of the 2012," he told us. "We already have a huge demand for the car from our existing market, which is outside North America. We have to allow for some time for Pagani to fulfill the demand of the existing customer, and then start with our new ones."
Pagani Huayra makes North American debut, first customer cars coming at end of 2012 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 08:59:00 EST.
The crew from EVO magazine managed to talk their way into a ride in the newest piece of insanity from Pagani. The Italian automaker is currently in the midst of endurance testing the Huayra for U.S. certification, and as a result, five of the cars are currently frolicking around Europe racking up precious kilometers. Pagani recently hosted a few of the company's customers at Sardinia, and EVO's Harry Metcalfe jumped into the passenger seat of the carbon fiber creation for a quick blast down the road. Fortunately for all of us, Metcalfe taped the whole experience.

The video shows the best look yet at the vehicle's adaptive aerodynamics, complete with plenty of active flaps that pop and dance as the Huayra builds speed. There's also the delicious sound of the supercar's twin-turbocharged 6.0-ltier V12 barking out 720 horsepower, too. The noise is nothing if not intoxicating. Hit the jump to check it out for yourself.
Continue reading Evo takes a spin in the Pagani Huayra

Evo takes a spin in the Pagani Huayra originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 12:33:00 EST. Hey hypercar fans, are you in the mood for some Pagani porn? Well, close the shades and turn the lights down low because we've got footage of the Huayra playing nice with the camera. In the Veneto region of northern Italy lies the Adria International Raceway, and it hosted Pagani's engineers as they played around with their new toy.

Click past the jump for footage of the Pagani Huayra posing for close-ups, revving its AMG-built 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12, and running down the track. You might not be able to pronounce the car's name, but it sure looks good when it flies by.
Continue reading Pagani Huayra hits the track for shakedown runs

Pagani Huayra hits the track for shakedown runs originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 21 May 2011 10:00:00 EST.
Like a child has two parents, so does a Pagani. One is the niche automaker based in Modena whose name it bears. The other is Mercedes AMG. The latter develops and manufactures the engine, while the former does just about everything else. In the case of the new Huayra, you might say that Pagani disappointed in the styling department (though having seen it up close, we'd beg to differ) and threw us a curveball with the nameplate it chose. But there's no arguing with the work those German engineers have undertaken at Affalterbach.

Don't believe us? You don't have to take us at our word. The videographers over at Marchettino, who regularly supply us with a stream of footage depicting Italy's finest running at full bore, have sent us a clip of the new Huayra doing its thing at the Adria International Raceway, one of eight FIA-certified circuits in Italy. The footage is all shot attached to the rear bumper so you get the full aural sensation. Check it out after the jump. And for a more comprehensive perspective on the symbiotic relationship between Pagani and AMG that has produced the Huayra, head on over to the dedicated microsite.
Continue reading Pagani Huayra clears its pipes on the track

Pagani Huayra clears its pipes on the track originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 May 2011 16:59:00 EST. If you missed any of the action from last week's Top Marques Monaco show, we've got you covered. This five-minute clip condenses all the glitzy highlights of this year's show into one horsepower-drenched summary. The show was a seriously drool-worthy affair, featuring a wide range of exotics; from classy, composed offerings from the likes of Aston Martin, to the delicious Pagani Huayra to the completely silly Tirrito Ayrton R.

High-end tuning companies always make a strong showing at Top Marques Monaco, and this year was no different. Gemballa's two new offerings, the Tornado and the Mistrale, broke cover after the company's recent troubles. Add to that a host of offerings from ABT, Koenigsegg and Marussia, and you've got a great way to kill five minutes. Click past the jump for all the exotic glory. Thanks for the tip, HF!
This is a brief announcement for the wealthy-elite amongst us. Pagani has announced that there will be two locations in the United States where the purchase of a Huayra will be possible. Should you be interested in procuring such a vehicle, we hope you like California.

The Auto Gallery of Beverly Hills and British Motor Cars of San Francisco have been selected as Pagani's official jumping-off point here in the U.S. Both locations will sell the Huayra, yet neither location will keep a vehicle in stock. A demo car will be stateside but it will be relegated to press events - you have our contact information, Pagani - and select client viewings.

Pagani will examine a need for the addition of more dealers to its U.S. distribution network. In the meantime, Huayra deliveries coordinated through the two California locations will begin arriving towards the beginning of 2012. No word yet on the Huayra's official price tag but bring quite a bit extra to cover the 9.75 percent sales tax in Beverly Hills or 9.50 percent sales tax in San Francisco.

Given that the Pagani Zonda was one of the most prolific vehicles in terms of model variants over the course of its 11-year production run, it would be safe to assume that the new Huayra will follow a similar path. The most obvious, you might guess, would be a convertible version. And according to the latest reports, that's precisely what's coming down the pipeline.

In speaking with our Argentinean compatriots, Horacio Pagani himself reportedly confirmed that a Huayra Roadster will arrive on the scene in about three years. Why so long? Your guess is as good as ours. Presumably, the Huayra was engineered from the drawing board to accommodate this sort of roofless behavior, but maybe Pagani wants to satisfy existing orders before rolling out an even more desirable version to let all that soft Italian sunlight shine through.

Pagani also revealed that his original name of choice for the new car was Da Vinci, but since the name was already registered - don't ask us by whom - he went with the virtually unpronounceable name Huayra, which was shared by the sports prototype Huayra Pronello that rocked the Argentinean racing scene in the late 60s. As for a baby brother to the Huayra, Pagani says it could be in the cards, but that working his company's technology into a cheaper package would be a difficult task.

Let's be honest. After months, if not years of anticipation, we were all a little disappointed at the results when Pagani finally unveiled its new Huayra. But you know what? After seeing it up close and personal here on the floor of the Geneva Motor Show - in red no less, which is invariably more suitable to an Italian exotic than <strike>beige</strike> champagne metallic - we're convinced afresh that Horacio Pagani and company make some of the most desirable machinery known to man.

That gaping maw, for example, that everyone felt detracted from an otherwise sleek shape? Hardly noticable in person, less evident in the more vibrant hue, and besides, out on the road you'll likely see more of the sculpted tail disappearing rapidly over the horizon than you will of the nose anyway. But don't take our word for it. Have a look through our ace photographer's lens in the high-resolution image gallery below.

We hate to be the ones to tell you this, but chances are pretty slim that you'll ever get the opportunity to slide behind the wheel of the new Pagani Huayra. Blame it on the numbers. Pagani is only planning on cranking out so many Huayra models, and there just so happens to be a shave under 7 billion people on the planet. Throw in the fact that each of the 700-horsepower Italian exotics will carry a price tag of near $1.35 million and the odds start to look even more bleak.

Hey, at least you're in good company. We're sitting in the exact same boat as you.

Fortunately for all of us, then, the Need for Speed franchise has come to our rescue. While we may not be able to find out in person just how fast 740 pound-feet of torque can move a 3,000 pound supercar, we will get a shot at flinging the carbon-fiber creation down a few virtual streets in Shift 2 Unleashed. In fact, the game is the only racing outlet to feature the newest addition to the Pagani family, so if you want to play with this bad boy, you're going to have to pick up the latest addition to the Need for Speed library. Hit the jump for a quick trailer.
