An intricately-crafted example of rolling sculpture like a Pagani supercar is as much about the details as it is about the whole package. Typically, you take in the overall shape and then focus in on the details. But Pagani's gone the other way with its latest teaser video.

The third in an anticipated series of five videos total, the latest clip is pretty dark - and still packed with vintage-style noise - so it's hard to discern much. But you do get some shifting-focus glimpses at a few details of the highly anticipated follow-up to the Zonda.

We'd been referring to the car under its developmental codename "C9", but earlier reports suggested the final product could carry the name "Huayra". We're pretty sure that "Deus Venti" (the name that accompanied the first teaser and which many blogs have taken as an indication of the car's name) actually means "two coffees", as any Liberal Arts student working at Starbucks could tell you, so our money's not on that nameplate materializing. Follow the jump to watch the video.

Is it just us, or are teasers getting more abstract by the hour? Each one of those little tidbits that automakers release to pique our interests seems to show less than the one before. Then Pagani hit a new soft-focus note when the Italian niche automaker gave us little more to look at than a cup of espresso and a keychain fob shaped like its upcoming supercar.

This latest teaser video reveals a little more, but only by comparison. The footage depicts some angles of the interior, which, in the grandest of Pagani style, looks so finely crafted, so intricately machined and painstakingly stitched, that it almost looks downright Steampunk. But then those Jules Verne worshipers could never make something as ferocious as the upcoming C9/Huayra promises to shape up. Check out the footage yourself after the jump.

It looks like we may have an inkling as to what Pagani will call its next supercar. According to the Italian web site Al Volante, the company has gone through the hassle of registering the name "Huayra." The nearly unpronounceable moniker sticks the company's tradition of branding its products after the famous winds of the world (not unlike many Volkswagen and Maserati models). In this case, Huayra is the word for "wind" from the ancient South American language of Quechua. Either that, or the company's marketing department threw alphabet soup at the wall until they came up with a suitable smattering of vowels and consonants.

Until now, the next Pagani has simply gone by the internal code name C9. And while the company has been kind enough to share a strange video teaser with the world, hard facts about what we can expect from the Zonda successor are few and far between. There's some indication that the beast will pack a mighty V12, and we'd be surprised if it didn't have enough horsepower to melt asphalt at a whim, but otherwise, we're completely in the dark as to what to expect. Thanks for the tip, JH!

The Pagani C9 is coming and it will be here sooner than you think. Slated to arrive in the beginning of 2011, the C9 figures to be a beastly V12-powered supercar ready to pick up where the Zonda leaves off... if it ever actually leaves. Before we get a good look at the production C9, Pagani has decided to go the teaser route. It's giving us a glimpse of... something, and it's doing it in video form rather than close-ups of a headlamp or a wheel lugnut.

It's hard to tell exactly what to look for in the video, but you have to watch until this most subtle of teasers all the way to the end to find it. Hop the jump to view the java-flavored clip. Thanks to all for the tips!
While you might be at home recovering from a Turkey-induced hangover, the dedicated spy photographers of the world are out and about, dutifully catching glimpses of new cars as they are tested. One lucky lensmith caught a camouflaged Pagani C9 being put through a rigorous testing regime.

And rigorous it is, with a reported 500,000-plus combined kilometers having ticked off the odometers of the four prototypes and one test mule. Pagani wants to hit 700,000 kilometers before the car shows its unmasked face, which looks almost Fisker-esque in the photos you see here.

The Pagani C9 is powered by an AMG-developed V12 engine, which is not related to the V12 found in the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series. Rumor has it that the V12 powering the C9 produces over 700 horsepower while also lowering C02 emissions to sub-supercar levels.

We're still calling it the C9, but the real name will be revealed sometime in the next few weeks. Pagani's Zonda replacement, whatever moniker it might wear, should make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March of 2011. If that happens, you can be certain we'll be on hand to capture it from every angle.

For reasons unclear, Mercedes and Pagani both felt the need to quash increasing speculation that the V12 in the coming Pagani C9 has anything to do with the V12 in the SL65 AMG Black Series. AMG is developing the motor for Pagani's next supercar, and Road & Track and Autocar had both said the Pagani engine was an evolution of a mill from Mercedes.

The twin-turbo V12 in the Black Series was rated at 670 horsepower and 730 pound-feet - itself a massaged and tuned version of the motor in the standard SL65 AMG. The joint statement to refute said, however, that "The engine of the Pagani C9 is not a derivative of the AMG V12 engine developed for the SL65 Black Series, nor is the AMG V12 engine in the SL65 Black Series derived from the engine AMG is currently developing for the Pagani C9." That about says it all, no?

Pagani C9 testing mule - Click above for high-res image gallery

We've seen more than our fair share of spy shots over the past couple of years showing test mules for the much-anticipated successor to the Pagani Zonda. What we've been lacking on, however, are details of the car's specifications. Now Britain's Autocar weekly claims to have the inside scoop on how the supercar codenamed C9 is shaping up, and it's looking good.

First of all, the engine: Mercedes AMG is once again developing the Pagani's powerplant. But whereas the current Zonda's V12 is naturally aspirated, the new unit - thought to be derived from the SL65's - is tipped to carry twin turbochargers. That should help the C9 churn out some 700 horsepower and 730 lb-ft of twist - considerably more than the current model.

All that muscle is reported to be transmitted to the rear wheels via an X-trac seven-speed sequential transmission, all the while reducing carbon emissions by half. That'll make the C9 - or whatever it's called when it finally hits the market - Euro 5 compliant, but that's not all. Autocar says Pagani is developing the car specifically to meet American federal regulations, meaning that the C9 will be sold Stateside whereas the current Zonda could not.

Construction is expected to take advantage of the carbon-titanium weave that Pagani developed for the ultra-exclusive Zonda Cinque, keeping weight down to around 2700 lbs. Production is supposedly to expand to 40 units per year, but Autocar expects that, despite similar pricing and a big improvement in performance, the current Zonda will continue to be built to order alongside the new model.

While Pagani continues to roll out special editions of the outgoing Zonda, we've been seeing just as many spy shots of its replacement undergoing development testing coming in. This latest batch, however, just might be the best look we've had at the new C9 yet.

Expected to launch sometime next year, the highly anticipated new Pagani supercar is expected to feature a 6.0-liter V12 custom built for the niche Italian automaker by Mercedes' AMG performance division, packing some 700 horsepower. This batch of spy shots was snapped while the test prototype - camouflaged with duct tape but wearing its own gull-winged sheetmetal - was undergoing high-altitude testing somewhere in Southern Europe. Have a closer look in the high-resolution image gallery below.

For years, Europe got all the hottest Pagani Zonda variants, but now we can count down the days until the Pagani C9 finally arrives Stateside. Expected to debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the all-new C9 is slated to get U.S. EPA and DOT certification and be Route 66-approved before going on sale in the U.S. sometime next year.

The gullwinged monster will be powered by an uprated version of AMG's 6.0-liter V12, boosted with two turbos to output approximately 690 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque. And the fact that only 40 of them will be built every year isn't the only thing that will keep them exclusive: the €900,000 price ($1.145M U.S.) will prevent pretenders from even kicking the C9's specially developed Pirelli tires.

Another day, another spy shot of the upcoming Pagani C9 hypercar...and another revelation, this time from Autoweek.nl. We've been waiting rather impatiently to see what Horacio Pagani will give us to replace the dearly beloved Pagani Zonda, so every nugget that drops has us straining to see if the sequel will be even half as good as the original. The Zonda is revered by many, so the followup needs to be something really special. That kind of buildup tends to put a lot of pressure on designers, particularly at a small automaker. One way to avoid the heat is to design to avoid direct comparisons - Think of the McLaren MP4-12C and its iconic F1 forebearer. Another is to give the new car something to make it stand out, something like gullwing doors.

This latest spy pic - and another posted with the one above over at Autoweek.nl - clearly show that the C9 will be sporting upward swinging hatches. With Pagani's reverence for Juan Manuel Fangio and the resulting ties to Mercedes-Benz, the introduction of the new SLS AMG and the need to differentiate between old and new Pagani models, perhaps this shouldn't be much a surprise. It does, however, fill in one more piece of the puzzle - and the finished product is looking better by the day.

The V12-powered C9 is expected to make its official debut by the end of this year. In the meantime, check out another look at this prototype by visiting our friends at Autoweek.nl.

Horacio Pagani isn't accustomed to sitting still. The Argentine-Italian supercar-maker has been tweaking successive versions of the Zonda since its creation, and recently took the Nürburgring lap record with the track-focused Zonda R. But that's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to things to come for Pagani.

Next on the horizon is the tentatively dubbed C9. The successor to the current Zonda is expected to get a twin-turbo V12 made specifically for the Modenese firm by Mercedes AMG, not the decommissioned supercharged V8 from the SLR as previously speculated. But don't discount the idea of an eight-cylinder Pagani just yet, as fresh reports from Europe suggest that a second model could be in the works to slot in below the C9/Zonda and give the niche automaker a two-car lineup.

As is often the case with such reports, details are scarce at the moment, but the formula calls for a smaller, lighter-weight package than either the current Zonda or the upcoming C9. Sources don't expect the sprightlier Pagani to arrive before 2015, but as the sayings go, good things come in small packages...and to those who wait.

Looks like the dyke's about to burst on the new Pagani C9, Horacio Pagani's cat-out-of-the-bag replacement for the legendary Zonda. Long story short, the Zonda is over ten years-old. The new C9 will be lighter, faster and sport better dynamics. Powering the new hypercar is a special, developed just for Pagani version of AMG's lovable 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12. In C9 trim this motor should belt out 700 horsepower. Yowza. Plus, it halfway looks like Michael Keaton's Batmobile.

A South African reader of ours caught the C9 mule in South Africa, snapped some pictures for your consumption and had the following to say:

I was driving from the OR Thambo International Airport (used to be called Johannesburg Intl) back home. This car carrier was standing next to the road, unattended. I don't know if you know, but a lot of high speed testing gets done in South Africa. One of our provinces (the Northern Cape) has parts that is part of the Kalahari desert with deserted straight blacktop for hundreds of kilometres on end. You get permission from the government (hence the yellow stickers) to drive as much as you'd like on the roads. The Porsche Panamera did round about 1600km in the Northern Cape last year. These pics were taken 14 February 2010.

Sounds fantastic to us, and should help shape the new breed of hyper exotics along with the McLaren MP4-12C. Thanks to MJ van Niekerk for the pics!
Consequently, automakers continue to devise all manner of camouflage and body cladding to keep prying eyes from seeing what they're working on. Horacio Pagani, however, seems to have a different approach. The independent Italian-Argentine purveyor of top-shelf supercars simply slaps the old bodywork on the new prototype and - presto! - nothing to see here. That is, until these shots came along.

Up until now, the prototypes for the Zonda's replacement that we've seen in spy shots have been all but completely indistinguishable from the existing model. But these shots - snapped in Johannesburg, South Africa - show entirely different bodywork around the rear end.

The big, protruding rear wing is gone, for starters. The tail-lamps, which were horizontal, rectangular units mounted low down on the existing Zonda, have been replaced by three-light clusters higher up. The squared-off mesh grille has been ditched in favor of an elliptical opening and the high-mounted barrel of exhaust tips, missing from recent prototypes, is back on this one. And that snorkel of an intake likewise protruding from previous prototypes is gone here, replaced by a more form-fitting vent behind the rear windscreen.

Unfortunately the snapper couldn't seem to get ahead to snap the front end, but the bodywork along the side flank appears more curvaceous as well, as does the greenhouse. The pair of test mules were apparently being escorted by a pair of Mercedes SLS AMGs, as the Benz performance division will once again be providing the Pagani's motivation.
What he didn't say, at any time, was that it would look any different than a Zonda. And that could explain why spy shots of Horacio's latest marvel capture a supercar that looks a lot like his last.

The 6.0-liter, 700-horsepower twin-turbo V12 will need to breathe a little more deeply, which explains the updated front clip and gaping intakes behind the cabin. Otherwise - and unless he's playing a brilliant game of hide-and-seek - all but a few of those 3,770 new parts must be underneath that familiar shape. The supercar estimated to run €900,000 should be shown in final form sometime this year.

If the recent onslaught of spy shots is any indication, development is well under way for the successor to the Pagani Zonda. AMG is once again developing the engine especially for the supercar - tentatively known as the C9 - which means that the new Zonda has to undergo the same exhaustive battery of tests as any new Mercedes. Just as well, because the new C9 is expected to be produced in far greater numbers than its extremely exclusive predecessor.

To gear up for that kind of production, which, aside from the engine, is built entirely in-house, Pagani is preparing to open a brand new factory. The new facility in Modena, Italy, the heartland of supercar country, will be three times larger than the existing factory and is slated to begin operation in 2010 when the new C9 will hit the streets.

So what will become of the SLR's supercharged V8? An amateur spy video posted on YouTube might have the answer.

A couple of weeks ago we brought you news that Pagani had renewed its engine partnership with Mercedes AMG, but what we didn't know then was what powerplant the wizards in Affalterbach were planning for Pagani's next exotic supercar. In the spy video after the jump, you can see a developmental test mule running around near the Pagani workshop wearing the Zonda's body panels like a kid in his father's suit. It's conspicuously missing the Zonda's trademark high-mounted garbage-pail exhaust tunnel.
