We've returned from a very busy week in Switzerland, and in going back over all of our 75 stories from the Geneva Motor Show, our editors have gathered up their personal favorite debuts from the European expo.

The wonderful thing about the Geneva show is just how wide of an array of vehicles are on display - everything from funny little one-off EVs to the most exotic of supercars to, well, truly ridiculous displays of coachbuilding. And because of that, this list of our editors' favorites might not be as predictable as you think.

But we don't want to give anything away just yet. Scroll down to have a look at our team's favorites from Geneva.
Continue reading Editors' Choice: Top Five 2013 Geneva Motor Show Debuts

Editors' Choice: Top Five 2013 Geneva Motor Show Debuts originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 11:57:00 EST.
We know, we know - we've seen this car before. But now it's yellow. And we have performance data. And we can see the interior. And most importantly, it's no longer a concept. Did we mention it's pretty? Yeah.

Feast your eyes on the P1 - McLaren's new flagship supercar that's ready to storm the United States, as well as the rest of the world. Under its hood is a twin-power hybrid powerplant, which uses both a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 and an electric motor to crank out a total of 903(!) horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. What does that mean? Hitting 62 miles per hour will take "less than three seconds" and shooting up to 124 mph will take "under seven seconds." The most impressive thing, however, is that hitting 186 mph will take "no more than 17 seconds," which shaves 11 seconds off the time originally set by the famed McLaren F1. In other words, this thing is hella quick.

Now's your chance to have a look at the production P1 in our brand-spanking-new high-res image gallery. And if you like what you see, just remember, salvation is only $1.15 million away.
McLaren P1 proves yellow doesn't have to be mellow originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Mar 2013 05:00:00 EST. The new hypercar will come packing 903 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque from the combination of a 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine and an electric motor. That's right: this sucker is a hybrid. The internal combustion engine features a few tweaks to improve cooling, and McLaren says the block uses a special casting to incorporate the motor. As a result, the P1 features a boost system that can serve up an instantaneous 176.5 horsepower dumped straight to the seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The driver can summon up that grunt on command by pressing the steering-wheel-mounted Instant Power Assist System button.

What's more, McLaren has figured out a way to use the electric motor to improve shift times. The P1 applies instant negative torque with each shift, dropping engine speed quickly and precisely for the upshift. Engineers have also incorporated additional technology from the company's Formula One efforts, including a Drag Reduction System. Push a button on the steering wheel and the rear wing shifts to reduce drag by 23 percent, providing the sensation of a boost in power. Check out the full press release below for more information on what is shaping up to be an incredible piece of technology.
Continue reading McLaren P1 to get 903 HP from "Twin Power" hybrid

McLaren P1 to get 903 HP from "Twin Power" hybrid originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Feb 2013 10:44:00 EST.
We've had several chances to get up close and personal with the McLaren P1 since its debut back in September at the Paris Motor Show, but McLaren has literally kept us in the dark about the car's interior thanks to a heavy tint covering all of its windows. With the company preparing the car for its production debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show, we're finally getting our first look inside the car courtesy of a few official images.

Opening up the P1's butterfly doors reveals an interior that was designed to be as close to a racecar as possible, so the lack of amenities and the amount of exposed carbon fiber inside the car are not surprising. From the fixed driver's seat, which is custom to each buyer and weighs just 23 pounds, the car definitely looks the part of a street-legal racecar with features such as the Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, reconfigurable digital gauge cluster and a carbon fiber waterfall center stack with navigation, audio system and HVAC controls. The long windshield and panoramic roof are meant to give the P1's cabin a feel similar to the cockpit of a fighter jet.

There's only a few more weeks to wait to see the car in its full glory, but until then, enjoy the new pictures from McLaren and scroll down for an official press release on the car's interior.
Continue reading McLaren reveals P1 interior shots

McLaren reveals P1 interior shots originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Feb 2013 16:00:00 EST.
Although we're clear on what the McLaren P1 is packing outside, we still have no idea what's happening in the cockpit. McLaren has given us a teaser with a short clip of the reconfiguring, digital dash gauge.

From the 47-second video it appears that in one setup there's a 9,000-rpm redline, with a gear indicator and "Manual" identifier to the right. Or if you're feeling racy you can have the gear indicator in the center and a row of green, red and blue lights, Formula One-style that replaces the tach display above, the speedometer then relegated to the corner. The gauge can also show an image of the car and the rear wing deploying.

A few nights ago, our own Michael Harley visited the McLaren P1 at an event in Beverly Hills, California. A recording of the engine note was played, and that led to speculation that the P1 will get a hi-po version of the 3.8-liter V8 employed by the MP4-12C, rocking something like 800 horsepower.

McLaren has been testing the P1, getting it showroom ready for its 500-unit run, and part of that involves full-throttle test-track duty with its tail held high. After checking out the official development prototype "spy shots," you can hear that engine note for yourself and guess how much flame spitting horsepower The Woking Wonder is pushing by watching the video below.
Continue reading Watch this and try to guess what will power McLaren's P1 supercar

Watch this and try to guess what will power McLaren's P1 supercar originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Jan 2013 16:59:00 EST.
McLaren invited us to private showing of its near production-ready P1 supercar in Beverly Hills last night, offering its affluent customers a sneak peek at what promises to be one of the finest - if not the best - sports car in the world when it arrives later this year. While the development team continues to hold many of the coupe's cards close to its chest, a trickle of details emerged that only served to further whet our appetite for the upcoming exotic.

The Volcano Orange prototype (the same one shown at the Paris Motor Show) is fully functional, with a complete operating powertrain. Before each public display, a dark tint is applied to the windows to hide the interior from view.

The chassis utilizes a carbon-fiber passenger tub shared with the MP4-12C, with aluminum structures front and rear for crash protection (carbon fiber is lighter, but it doesn't crush and absorb energy as well). All body panels are carbon-fiber and nearly all exposed metal (including the mesh vents) is made of titanium alloy. The target curb weight is 1,300 kilograms, or less than 2,900 pounds.

Based on a recorded engine soundtrack played at the event, and noting a pair of intakes each likely feeding a turbocharger (we spotted genuine gold foil in the engine bay to help to ward off heat), it is assumed that the P1 will be fitted with a high-output version of the MP4-12C's twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 making about 800 horsepower. A KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System), similar to what is used in Formula One, will provide a strong boost of even more horsepower for short periods. While McLaren has avoided all-wheel drive, don't rule out some sort of electric propulsion on the front axle.

McLaren doesn't have the Porsche 918 Spyder in its crosshairs - it's too heavy and slow. Instead, it is aiming its sights directly at the upcoming Ferrari F150 (the successor to the Enzo). That said, the British automaker expects its P1 to be the world's quickest production vehicle around Nürburgring.

Assembly should start within the next several months. Only 500 copies will be made, with each costing about $1.2 million.

Expect more mechanical details about the McLaren P1 to be revealed in the next few weeks, with the two-place interior finally unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
McLaren shows P1 at private event in Beverly Hills, reveals more details originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 Jan 2013 16:58:00 EST.
McLaren gathered people of the very important variety in New York City to get an up-close look at it P1 supercar, and to explain how the production car will diverge from the P1 concept shown at the Paris Motor Show. During the show the P1 was said to be "97-percent final," and during the NYC shindig the last three-percent variation was explained, that being vents in the fenders ahead of the front wheels to channel hot air away, and a different pattern for the mesh grille at the rear of the car.

Other notables include the panoramic roof, full carbon fiber discs with a mirror finish provided by a Formula One supplier, superaluminum wheels that are as light as magnesium but more durable, and bits we already know about like the downforce equal to "having a small elephant sitting on the roof of the car." You can watch the presentation in the video below, and play along with photos from either of the high-res galleries.
Continue reading McLaren shows production P1 at private NYC shindig, details small changes [w/video]

McLaren shows production P1 at private NYC shindig, details small changes [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Dec 2012 17:03:00 EST.
Spy photographers have grabbed a few shots of the McLaren P1 out for a little testing on public streets. Much of the coupe's heavy camouflage has been discarded in favor of a trippy vinyl wrap, revealing the production version to be nearly identical to the concept McLaren unveiled at this year's Paris Motor Show. The company's new ultracar is designed to be somewhat smaller and more delicate compared to other bruisers in the segment, and McLaren has made it clear the machine will bow with the least frontal area of any new supercar on the planet. Even so, the wild bodywork will dish up something around 1,300 pounds of downforce at 125 mph.

Details are still scarce when it comes to what sort of engine we can expect to see mounted amidships, but we do know the P1 will make use of a carbon fiber chassis that integrates the roll cage into the vehicle's roof structure. Likewise, every last one of the vehicle's body panels are expected to be stitched from carbon fiber as well. Sounds like a party.
McLaren P1 prototype seen testing on public roads originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Nov 2012 13:30:00 EST.
Destined to be one of the splashier events of the 2012 Paris Motor Show, the unveiling of McLaren's newest supercar, and successor to the intimidating F1 legend, went off beautifully today. Despite being a design exercise, the P1 concept here in Paris clearly paves the path forward for McLaren, with the company's stated goal being to produce a car that is superlative both on the road and on the track.

While the stunningly orange-and-black P1 concept is not the final product, recently exposed schematic drawings from McLaren reveal that this design is probably very close to what the company is planning to put on the road in a few years. In fact, our own man-on-the-ground, Matt Davis, reported yesterday that the P1 is "97-percent final."

A close inspection of our gallery images of the P1 reveal, using human beings for scale, that the P1 is a delicately sized sports car. We're told that the new Mac will have the smallest frontal area of any car in the segment, while still delivering something like 1,300 pounds of downforce at 125 miles per hour.

Additionally, but none too surprising, the P1 will make use of all of McLaren's hardest won racing technology. The midengined car is built around a carbon fiber monocoque that also incorporates a safety cage within the roof structure - a concept that McLaren calls "Monocage." This structure also works to deliver heaps of fresh air to the engine via a roof snorkel, which is pretty rad. All of the car's body panels are made from carbon fiber, as well, to keep the P1 as light as possible.

It almost goes without saying, but we're just aching to get our hands on a test-ready version of the P1, sometime around when the car goes on sale at the end of 2013. Stay tuned.

Continue reading McLaren P1 is the nearly real supercar of our drive-to-race dreams

McLaren P1 is the nearly real supercar of our drive-to-race dreams originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 14:00:00 EST.
"She spreads its wings" or "It spreads its wing," depending on how you conjugate your French, is the rough translation of a headline from L'Automobile. The French auto magazine claims to have its hands on patent sketches of the brilliantly wild-looking McLaren P1. While images have been shown of the P1 Concept ahead of the imminent Paris Motor Show, these are claimed to be of the actual production model.

As you can see from the side-on image, the silhouette bears resemblance to the original McLaren F1, though likely as the optimal wind-tunnel-tested shape for supercar dominance. The side view also reveals a large active spoiler and one heck of a rear diffuser set, also seen in more detail from the rear. Like the MP4-12C, the active spoiler will likely also act as an air brake, bringing the hypercar to an abrupt stop.

Also of note, is the similarities between the P1 Concept, and this supposed production model. The head-on view reveals that the headlights bear a strong connection to the "swoosh" in the McLaren logo. Also, the lack of large taillight detail in the profile image suggests that, like the concept, the P1 would have the exotic trail of LED taillights.

So, while the P1 Concept will wow us beyond belief in Paris, it will be some time after that before we know for sure how close these sketches come to the production model. Stay tuned!
McLaren P1 patent sketches revealed originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 18:01:00 EST.
Press days for the 2012 Paris Motor Show have yet to get underway, but Autoblog's European Editor, Matt Davis, has already gotten a good look at what is sure to be one of the exhibition's brightest stars, the McLaren P1.

While Davis was not permitted to take photographs of the new design study until its formal unveiling, our man received a walkaround with designer Frank Stephenson, and what he found was so compelling that he called us right from the show floor to file some notes. According to Davis, "The car is impressively compact - barely bigger than the MP4-12C, but all the comments that were negative about the 12C's design being somewhat basic and derivative should go away with this car." In contrast to most modern supercars that are surprisingly large (e.g. Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Aventador), the P1 follows in the footsteps of the legendary McLaren F1, which was a lot smaller than most people realized. The P1 is about the size of a Porsche 911 GT3, suggesting weight should be held in check.

Designer Stephenson calls the P1's form "shrink wrapped," yet there's still much more surface interest than with the company's MP4-12C. Davis notes that the design is "very organic in that almost all of the aero elements you see are designed into the body." Among the car's aero tricks, when the rear wing air brake rises to its 32-degree angle maximum, there are also hidden underbody Gurney flaps that open to level out the car.

Power estimates are still under wraps, and while the car seen here is still technically a concept, it is widely expected to spawn a near-identical production series sometime late next year.

We're looking forward to sharing more with you shortly, but for now, feast your eyes on the gallery.

UPDATE - Matt Davis has sent along some new notes:

The car as shown is 97-percent final and will be on delivery near the end of 2013.

Remember when we told you the P1 was small? It has the smallest frontal area of any car in its segment, yet it still has over 1,300 pounds of downforce up front at 125 mph (Cd is 0.34).

Hot air flow through the two hood nostrils is divided precisely between the door aero vents and the center roof snorkel.

The car shown here was photographed in the suspension's "race" stance, which is about 1.2-inches lower than normal. Program Director Paul McKenzie says this suspension is as notworthy as the 12c's solution but is goes"one step beyond."

McLaren has released the first official images of its P1 design study, the supercar precursor that we've all been waiting for. This stunner will officially debut at the Paris Motor Show next week.

Calling the P1 McLaren's next "ultimate supercar," McLaren says this concept takes its inspiration from the company's rich racing heritage. Visually, we certainly see the connection with the late, great McLaren F1 - the concept seems to blend the proportions of the F1 with the overall design language of the current MP4-12C. With an exceedingly brief, snubbed nose flowing into wildly sculpted rear bodywork (we're especially fond of the rear three-quarter view), the P1 is more dramatic and compelling than it's relatively staid MP4-12C little brother, truly selling the supercar idea without having to move a wheel. That the concept is rendered in a searing shade of orange metallic doesn't hurt, either.

Of course, McLaren isn't giving us any hints on the technical details for the eventual production version of the P1, though it does speak to the intent of the final car. The P1 is not intended to be the world's fastest vehicle in terms of "absolute top speed," shooting, according to Ron Dennis, to be, "the quickest and most rewarding series production road car on a circuit." That's supercar snobbery - a cockiness based on purity of purpose, rather than numbers on a specification sheet - that is bound to resonate with car geeks everywhere.

After the Paris showing of the P1, we're told it will be one year until the production version of the range-topping supercar shows up, with an on-sale date sometime in the last part of 2013. Look for much more information about the P1, live from our Paris team, next week.
Continue reading McLaren reveals P1 design study, F1 successor takes shape

McLaren reveals P1 design study, F1 successor takes shape originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Sep 2012 11:45:00 EST.
Subaru Impreza P1 10th Anniversary Gathering - Click above for high-res image gallery

Looking back, the year 2000 was a pretty special time. The world had survived the Y2K fiasco with nary a scratch... other than having a pile of soon-to-be obsolete VCRs that were suddenly even more difficult to program than they had been before. On this side of the pond, it looked as if the human race was fresh with optimism, and 9/11 was still nothing more than what you called when the garage caught fire. Or was that just us? But for the UK, 2000 was special for an entirely different reason. It was the year Subaru brought the infamous Impreza P1 to the empire.

Conservatively described as one of the best production Impreza models ever sold, the car was built by Prodrive in the image of the already legendary rally racers beating up on the WRC at the time. With 280 horsepower pushing a mere 2,850 pounds via Subaru's all-wheel drive wizardry, it boasted STI performance when the company's performance arm was still a twinkle in the Fuji Heavy Industries eye.

Last weekend marked the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the car, and as such, 100 Imperza P1s descended on the Prodrive headquarters in Branbury to mark the occasion. In addition, another 300 Scoobies and 1,000 fans of both Subaru and Prodrive showed up to participate. Hit the jump for the press release.
The idea, in a nutshell, was to provide customers with the opportunity to occasionally borrow vehicles from a stable of supercars. Since most privately-owned supercars sit around unused most of the time, membership in a supercar club seemed - and, for a while, was - a logical alternative, offering most of the benefits with none of the hassle.

Unfortunately, the weakened global economy has meant that many of these supercar clubs have had to close down. With membership dropping and fleets of supercars losing their value, these businesses haven't been able to stay afloat. Over the course of the past year, Seagrave, Group 20 and Club Velociter - all supercar clubs based in the UK - shut down, and now the grand-daddy of them all, P1, has gone into court-administered bankruptcy.

P1 International was the first such club, founded in 2000 by former F1 world champion Damon Hill and business partner Michael Breen, and it was arguably the most successful, with 300 members and a fleet of 40 supercars - including Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Aston Martins and Bentleys - in two locations. Hill, now the president of the British Racing Drivers' Club, withdrew from the company three years ago, but claimed he was still owed money. A legal battle ensued, resulting in the club being put into bankruptcy by local courts. What this will mean for the club's members remains to be seen, but with used supercar values in the dumpster, it is reasonable to think that some well-used Astons and Ferraris will be up for grabs in short order.

[Sources: F1-Live and Car]
P1 reportedly following other British supercar clubs into bankruptcy originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Apr 2009 16:27:00 EST.
You may find this incredibly difficult to relate to - if it isn't, this writer has "personal sponsorship opportunities" available - but some people don't find the existing supercar clubs exclusive enough. Enter stage left Harrods, the ritzy British department store that caters to just such a crowd, to answer their calls with the launch of the Segrave Club.

For those unfamiliar, supercar clubs are a British phenomenon that is only beginning to take root in America. Rather than buy your own exotic and having to deal with all the related costs, clubs have sprung up that buy the cars, take care of them and, for a cost, allow you to drive them. Membership is often based on usage and the fleet of cars the member wants access to, but some clubs have the most desirable exotics ever to grace God's green earth.

Segrave comes into the picture as a result of some customers coming away disappointed at the difficulty of getting time behind the wheel of the supercars they really want. To cater to those clients, Harrods sought out the talent of Nick Hancock who, together with former world champion Damon Hill, set up P1, the premier supercar club in the UK. Segrave's members pay an initial fee of five thousand pounds sterling, which covers an advanced driving school (smart), and is supplemented by an annual membership fee of ?16,000. That kind of mint opens access to such heart- and tire-melting spanking new supercars as the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Porsche 911 GT2 and Aston Martin DBS, while access to the more exclusive (but not necessarily faster, mind you) Porsche Carrera GT and Mercedes SLR McLaren requires an additional four thousand per year. While the membership to other clubs continues to grow, Segrave's pledge to its moneyed members is that the ratio will always remain at only six members for every car, which translates to more regular access for its insanely fortunate members.

Those of you who've been following the car's development know that it's driven by Peugeot's HDi FAP V12 diesel engine, which should produce upwards of 700 horsepower and an monstrous 850 ft-lbs of torque. Le Mans will provide motorsports fanatics with the ultimate showdown, as the closed-roof French racer takes on Germany's world-beating Audi R10 TDI pair in what's sure to be match for the ages. It will be the first time the cars compete against each other, as the Audis remain stateside competing in the American Le Mans Series while the Peugeots campaign in Europe. This is gonna be a lot of fun to watch.

Three more shots of the Pug in its race threads can be found in the attached gallery, which also contains a slew of other images ranging from the HDi FAP V12 to the unpainted car undergoing testing.

[Source: Peugeot]

Gallery: Peugeot 908 HDi

Related Items:
