<br />
<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/opel/">Opel</a> showcased their suicide-door wearing <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/05/geneva-2008-opel-meriva-a-new-take-on-the-mpv/">Meriva crossover concept back in 2008</a> at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/geneva-motor-show/">Geneva Motor Show</a>, which was followed by the production <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/05/geneva-preview-opel-releases-next-gen-meriva-mpv-with-rear-hing/">2011 Opel Meriva</a> at the 2010 Geneva show earlier this year. Now, thanks to some excellent and sneaky camera work, we have obtained images of a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/meriva">Meriva</a> powered not by traditional <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/gasoline">gasoline</a> or <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/diesel">diesel</a> fuel but by Tesla's favorite form of energy - <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/electricity">electricity</a>.<br />
<br />
Three Opel Meriva EV prototypes were caught being put through the paces in the Austrian Alps. Apparently, the engineers are not just interested in how much power it takes to make it up the mountain grades but also how much can be regenerated on the way back down. Since the cars need to take time out to juice back up, some plucky photogs were able to catch them resting.<br />
<br />
According to the shooters, Opel has partnered with Bosch, Mercedes and some German universities on this project, known internally as Meregio. Check out the gallery below to see the sans-tailpipe Merivas taking a break from their alpine work retreat.<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/opel/">Opel</a> wants to put its new Meriva crossover in your face, three-dimensional like. The <a href="http://www.opel.de/microsite/meriva/#/gallery/3d">first commercial</a> for the people-and-baby carrier with the coach rear doors comes with enhanced stereoscopic vision, and there are hugs and balloons and soccer and pelican-looking things and more hugs and a snappy tune. But there aren't any 3D glasses. You'll need to supply those yourself before you <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/06/25/comin-at-ya-opel-launches-first-meriva-ad-in-3d/#continued">follow the jump</a> for the vid. Or you can peep the gallery of high-res photo below, for which your regular human eyes should suffice.<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/vauxhall/">Vauxhall</a> will be trailering the new Meriva and the coming <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/opel+ampera/">Ampera</a> to next month's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/geneva-motor-show/">Geneva Motor Show</a>, along with a concept that the company won't say a word about yet. A teaser image shows the car with an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/opel/">Opel</a> logo, and it definitely isn't the Ampera unless they've dramatically reprofiled its front diffuser and dropped the mileage estimates. <br />
<br />
Vauxhall reveals only that the secret car "embodies much of the company's future thinking in terms of design and engineering," and it's apparently being used to show that size and comfort can exist with environmental stewardship. We're going to guess some Volt/Ampera inner architecture, note the "Voltec" branding, under a larger sedan body. But we only have to wait three more weeks to find out. <br />
<br />
You can read about the coming offerings in the press release after the jump, and check out high-res photos of the teaser and the new Meriva in the gallery below.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;"><em><strong><small>2011 Opel Meriva - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em></div>
<br />
When <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/opel/">Opel</a> showed off a <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2008/03/03/geneva-08-opel-meriva-concept/">concept version</a> of the next-generation Meriva at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/geneva-motor-show/">2008 Geneva Motor Show</a>, everyone expected the production version to look much the same. After all, the concept exhibited all the styling cues we've seen on other recent concepts from R&uuml;sselsheim. What we didn't expect was for the B-segment people carrier to retain its door configuration. It is standard practice for designers to use rear hinged suicide doors on concepts because it gives better visibility to the interior as the car spins on the auto show turntable, and it also adds a bit of theater.<br />
<br />
For various engineering and safety reasons, these are typically discarded in the transition to production. Not this time, however. The basic design of the concept has been brought to production including the rear-hinged <em>FlexDoors</em>, as Opel dubs them. Such doors can actually make sense with the smaller portals on a car of this size, making entry and exit easier for back seat occupants. <br />
<br />
In Europe, the Meriva will launch later this year with a lineup of six available gas and diesel engines ranging from 75 to 140 horsepower. Thus far, we have not received any indication from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/general+motors/">General Motors</a> that the Meriva will come to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/buick/">Buick</a> lineup to join the Opel-based <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/buick/regal">Regal</a> and Astra/Excelle. The latter is probably as small as GM wants to take Buick at this time. <br />
<br />
The new Meriva will debut in Geneva on March 4, but in the meantime, you can check out the high-res gallery below and the official press release after the jump.<br />

According to all the spy shots that have surfaced, the production model won't exchange the concept's novelty for more sedate, rear-hinged doors at the rear. <br /><br />The latest prototype caught out has a fake set of door handles at the back of the rear door. However, there are <a href="http://www.worldcarfans.com/9071211.012/opel-meriva-spied-with-suicide-doors">shots of the sheetmetal from the inside</a>, and you can plainly see the recessed hinge mounting areas at the rear of the panels. General Motors calls the arrangement FlexDoors, and evidently unlike other such setups, the rear doors will be able to open independently of one another (most such setups require that the front door be opened first). GM says the design will make the new Meriva safer and more convenient.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1">Opel Meriva Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/01_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/02_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/03_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/04_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/05_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2009/03/new-opel-meriva-mpv-with-suicide-rear.html">Carscoop</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/20/spy-shots-opel-meriva-mule-caught-brandishing-suicide-doors/">Spy Shots: Opel Meriva mule caught brandishing suicide doors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 20 Mar 2009 17:34:00 EST. The Meriva's small footprint would lend itself well to the urban confines Opel expects the majority of buyers to be based out of, and the FlexDoors, a modern take on the suicide doors of yore, should make ingress and egress easier for the kiddies and anyone else banished to the back of the mini-bus. Opel wanted to maintain the stylistic edge of a high belt-line, which normally impedes rearward visibility, but the slopping rear windows and D-pillar might make blind spots a bit more bearable when some version of the Meriva makes it to production around the turn of the decade. <br /><br />You can read up on all the details about the Opel Meriva concept in the press release after the jump.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1">Opel Meriva Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/01_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/02_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/03_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/04_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/05_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/05/geneva-2008-opel-meriva-a-new-take-on-the-mpv/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Geneva 2008: Opel Meriva, a new take on the MPV</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/05/geneva-2008-opel-meriva-a-new-take-on-the-mpv/">Geneva 2008: Opel Meriva, a new take on the MPV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 05 Mar 2008 09:02:00 EST. This four-door hatch concept that's guaranteed a spot on the production line is cloaked in Opel's new design language, which means clean lines and a simple face with the brand's new grille. <br /><br />There are two elements of the Meriva Concept that we find interesting enough to mention again (the rest you can read in the press release after the jump), which include its rear FlexDoors and the kink in its window line. Rear suicide doors are a common feature on concept cars because they allows designers to eliminate the B-pillar, giving photographers a better view of the interior from behind the velvet ropes. The Meriva Concept, however, retains its B-pillars, suggesting the rear suicide doors have a definite shot at making it to the final production car. We also like the downward kink in the rear window line because it's more than just an aesthetic flick of the designer's pen. Belt lines on cars have been rising for decades, and all too often this means outward visibility is compromised for rear seat passengers. By adding this small kink, Opel has given a little bit of the greenhouse back to rear seat riders. We'll finally meet this car in person next week at the Geneva Motor Show, but we don't expect it to make the return trip badged as a Saturn like so many other Opel models.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1">Opel Meriva Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/01_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/02_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/03_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/04_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/opel-meriva-concept-1/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/05_opel_meriva_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Opel]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/28/officially-official-opel-meriva-concept-ready-for-geneva/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Officially Official: Opel Meriva Concept ready for Geneva</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/28/officially-official-opel-meriva-concept-ready-for-geneva/">Officially Official: Opel Meriva Concept ready for Geneva</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 11:57:00 EST. The Meriva Concept is Opel and Vauxhall's study for what form the next Euro minivan could take.
<p> </p>
<p>The Meriva Concept, as previewed by the concept sketch above, draws on the previous <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/06/live-from-geneva-its-the-opel-gtc-concept/">GTC Coupe</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/10/officially-official-opel-flextreme-concept-40g-km-of-co2-and/">Flextreme</a> concepts and applies the theme to a monocab form, a segment in which Opel and Vauxhall account for one fifth of continental sales between the Zafira, Meriva and Agila MPVs. Expect the Meriva Concept to preview the direction that GM's European tall wagons will take in the near future, which could end up finding its way into a Saturn model or two on our side of the Atlantic. <em>Press release after the jump.</em></p>

Well, here's one more, in which the stars of the Opel lineup get a Pixar-style rfacelift.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.opel.com/brand_sites/pixarcars/pixarcars.html">Click here</a> and you'll be brought to an Opel/<span style="font-style: italic;">Cars</span> minisite that shows the characters from Pixar's latest tour de force interacting with the Opel Astra (above), Opel Meriva, and Opel Zafira. In addition to the intro movie that plays automatically when you enter the site, you can click on a link to watch a Euro-market TV commercial that shows the three GM cars auditioning for the part of Mater. <br /><br />The spot is well done, and it's pretty neat seeing how the Pixar folks gave life to the Opels. Each car has it's own personality: Astra is very sporty and aggressive, Zafira is slick and stylish, and Meriva ... well Meriva's a little more shy. If you saw <em>Cars </em>and liked it, you'll get a kick out of it. <br /><br />Desktop wallpapers, a screensaver, behind-the-scenes podcasts, and a PDF coloring book are also available for download.<br /><br /><strong>Addendum: </strong>Thanks to reader/commenter Scott K for finding the direct link to the minisite!<br /><br />(Additional images after the jump)<br /><br />[Source: Opel]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/07/21/opels-brought-to-life-by-pixar/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Opels brought to life by Pixar</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/07/21/opels-brought-to-life-by-pixar/">Opels brought to life by Pixar</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 21 Jul 2006 07:05:00 EST.
