With a financial crisis ravaging the European automotive industry, many automakers have tightened budgets, and motorsports programs have, in many cases, been among the first things to go. That's the case at Ford and Mini, but it's the opposite at Opel, which announced its return to motorsports in the form of spec series for two very fun-looking hatchbacks.

The first racer is the Opel Adam Cup, which will participate in the ADAC Rally Masters competition for the Opel Rally Cup Trophy. The series will closely match FIA R2 specifications, and will offer special coaching for younger drivers that place well in the "junior rally" system. There will also be cash prizes.

If hosing the dirt off your car after every race isn't your thing, there's the Astra OPC Cup. Featuring Opel Astra OPC, the highlight of the season will be a 24-hour endurance race at the Nürburgring. As with the Adam Cup, there will be cash prizes.

There's plenty of history here. Opel's rally exploits included a European Championship title in 1974, and again in 1979. This success was followed by campaigns in DTM in the 1990's, culminating in a constructor championship in 1998. Opel also found overall victory in the 24-hour endurance race at the Nürburgring in 2003. To read up more on Opel's and its new racecars, check out the press release below.
Continue reading Opel plans return to motorsport

Opel plans return to motorsport originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Nov 2012 11:31:00 EST.
The Opel Astra notchback sedan has completed its round-the-world trip. General Motors has based its latest compact on the Delta II platform. Designed by its studios in the U.S. and Asia, it was first sold as the Chinese-market Buick Excelle GT and then in the U.S. as the Buick Verano. Now it joins the Astra five-door hatch, Astra wagon and three-door Astra GTC as the fourth member of the lineup, going on sale later this month in European markets.

Ultimately the compact sedan will get twice as many engine choices as it has doors: seven powerplants will be available at launch. Four gas engines range from 100 to 180 horspower, while three diesels swing from 95 to 130 hp and include two ecoFLEX motors with Start/Stop technology. Early 2013 will see another gas option added, the 1.6-liter turbochared, direct-injected SIDI Ecotec.

Even though it goes on sale this month, it will be 'officially' debuted during Russia's Moscow Auto Show at the end of August. You'll find a press release by scrolling down, and a few high-res photos above. Now we'll wait to see if the transfer goes the other direction, with Buick getting its own version of the Astra GTC.
Continue reading Buick Verano goes to Europe, changes name to Opel Astra

Buick Verano goes to Europe, changes name to Opel Astra originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Jun 2012 10:45:00 EST.
The Opel Astra CC suffers from the same ailment as other small, hardtop convertibles like the Renault Megane and Peugeot 308 cc: an ungainly backside. Stowing a tin roof that needs to cover four people inside a small car just blows things up in the rear. That's why the head of General Motors design in Europe says that the next Astra cabrio won't be a hardtop, but return to cloth.

And in fact, it won't even be called "Astra." Set to bow in 2012, it will break from that nomenclature and forge its own - as yet unknown - brand path. "This car demands a new name," it was said, because "it will look nothing like an Astra," burdened as it will be with continuing the fight to raise Opel and Vauxhall cachet as, a battle begun with the Insignia.

We thought the Opel GTC we saw at the Frankfurt Auto Show was pretty hot - put a softtop on that and hold its stance, and we'd applaud. But if Opel has something even better in mind, well then bring on 2012. We can't wait to see it.
Next Opel / Vauxhall Astra cabrio to be standalone model originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Oct 2011 08:58:00 EST.
A more engaging driving experience should always be considered a wonderful thing, and it's clear from the Astra GTC that Opel agrees. The compact hatchback has its sights set squarely on the Volkswagen Scirocco, and it's clear the two cars share a common design ideology. Low and sleek, the Astra GTC has been styled to provide enthusiasts with a sneak peek of the driving experience waiting once they strap in behind the wheel.

The key to getting the Opel Astra GTC to play nice with twisty roads lies in the changes made beneath the car's skin. General Motors engineers took the HiPerStrut setup from the front suspension of an Opel Insignia OPC and applied them to the Astra. Opel says this upgrade reduces the amount of unwanted front-tire movement felt during cornering and other high-grip situations.

Out back, the Opel Astra GTC gets more suspension-related attention. The Watt's link rear setup now sports revised roll-stiffness and a lower roll-center height to keep things more composed. Additionally, the entire three-door compact was 15 millimeters compared to the standard Astra, and the wheelbase and front and rear tracks have grown as well.

Opel has plied a lot of handling know-how and upgraded styling into its Astra to turn it into the Astra GTC. If you like what you see, keep your fingers crossed. Rumor has it that General Motors could bring the Astra GTC stateside as a more entertaining brother for the Buick Verano. A convertible version is reportedly also in the works. Want to learn more?
Different strokes for different folks. While Volkswagen chose to label its coupe-like Golf derivative as the Scirocco, rival automakers are keeping theirs in the family. Take, for example, the Renault Megane coupe, and this - the new Vauxhall Astra GTC.

Compared to the already-sleek five-door Astra, the GTC retains only the door handles and antenna. All the body panels are fresh, riding on a wheelbase that's actually longer than the existing five-door's, and it's slower and wider, too. Overall, it's a pretty direct production of the GTC concept unveiled at the Paris Motor Show last fall, and of the renderings released more recently.

British buyers - and presumably European ones at Opel dealerships as well - will be able to choose from from four engine options: a 1.4 with 118 or 138 horsepower, a 1.6 with 178 hp or a 2.0-liter diesel with 163 hp. The sophisticated suspension from the higher-end Insignia VXR coupled with adaptive damping promise to keep handling tight.
The Astra GTC will headline Vauxhall's lineup at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month for its public debut (it was originally promised for this fall's Frankfurt Motor Show, but is showing up early), but you can check it out now in the high-res image gallery and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Vauxhall unveils new Astra GTC ahead of Goodwood debut

Vauxhall unveils new Astra GTC ahead of Goodwood debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 09:30:00 EST.
A staple product of General Motors' overseas subsidiaries, the Opel Astra has been a long time in the making. The five-door hatchback was revealed back in 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which was then followed by the GTC show car that previewed the three-door version in concept form (along with the production Sport Tourer wagon variant) a year later at the Paris Motor Show. Another year after that, Opel will unveil the production three-door GTC in Frankfurt this coming September. The final product is still undergoing development, but while GM's German division irons out the kinks, they've released these preliminary images showing us what to expect from the production version.

Although still months away from its public debut, the order books for the Astra GTC will officially open on June 7, when full details will be revealed. The Astra range, you'll recall, is also offered a Vauxhall in the UK, as the Buick Excelle XT in China, and as a Chevrolet in Latin America. But while Saturn had a version of the more angular previous-generation model, now that the brand is shut, we'll likely have to do without. That's a shame, because we recently saw a five-door model out on the road while overseas and were struck by its fluid design. So we'll just have to do with admiring from afar. Follow the jump for the brief press release, and scope out the pair of images in the gallery below.

From the likes of the Dodge EV to the Ford Cortina, Lotus has had its fingers in all of the Big Three's pies. But its strongest relationship has historically been with General Motors. The British engineering firm helped develop the engine in the original Corvette ZR-1, engineered the Vauxhall VX220/Opel Speedster, re-engineered the Vauxhall Carlton into ones of its own, and has undertaken a variety of projects for the General over the years. Now the latest reports have Lotus teaming up with GM's European subsidiaries for a new hot hatch.

Much as it did with the outgoing Vauxhall Astra VXR, Lotus is reportedly hard at work tuning the chassis on the next generation of the model. Previewed by the GTC concept at the Paris Motor Show, the new Astra VXR is tipped to ditch the current model's electronic differential for a more traditional mechanical one. The engine is rumored to produce in the neighborhood of 280-300 horsepower, with Lotus reportedly brought in to help minimize the torque steer inevitable with that much power channeled through the front wheels.

The Hyperstrut front suspension set-up developed for the Insignia VXR is tipped to port over to the smaller hatchback, expected to hit European markets towards the end of next year to do battle with the likes of the Ford Focus RS and Volkswagen Golf R. We can only hope that GM finds space in the lineup of one of its remaining brands to bring the new Astra VXR to American shores.

General Motors is shutting the doors on its Antwerp, Belgium manufacturing facility after failing to find a buyer for the plant. According to Automotive News, companies from both the United States and China expressed interest in the factory, but GM says that neither could come up with a sustainable business strategy that would keep the doors open and workers employed. The plant currently provides work for around 1,300 people who were warned earlier this year that the facility could be closed by the end of 2010. Now that possibility has become a reality.

The Antwerp plant builds the current Opel Astra, though with the company losing market share hand over fist, GM has been looking to shutter the facility for some time. Interestingly enough, AN says that this is the first closing of a European automotive manufacturing facility since 2006. GM says that while it continues to wind down operations at the plant throughout the remainder of this year, it will still be open to hearing proposals from companies looking to invest in the site.

Believe it or not, the Paris Motor Show is just a hop, skip and a jump away. Opel has already taken it upon itself to give the world a taste of what the company will show off at this year's show, including its new Astra Sports Tourer and a concept worked up just for La Ville-Lumière. Details are scarce on the showcar at the moment. So far, we know that it will be called the GTC Paris and that it was at least partially inspired by Richard Bach's Jonathan Livingston Seagull. We certainly can't argue with the company's taste in fiction, and we suspect it's going to look an awful lot like a hotted-up version of some of the Astra-based prototypes our spy shooters have been seeing lately.

Opel has been kind enough to share quite a few more details on its long-roof Astra Sports Tourer. When the company pulls back the sheets, we can expect to see around a snappy station wagon the likes of which American buyers can only dream about. The car will make use of the same tailored interior as its hatchback sibling, though with more space for stuffing various sundries behind the back seats.

Expect to see a few additions to the company's diesel line up on display as well. Hit the jump to check out the full press release for yourself and mark your calendars. This year's Paris Motor Show starts on October 2, but if you can't make it to France for the show, don't worry, Autoblog will be there to give you a front-row seat on all the action.

Small wagons might not have much of a place in the United States, but overseas, they do very well, thank you. Take the Opel Astra, for example - its wagon variant accounts for around 25 percent of its overall sales. Thus, Opel hasn't wasted any time in creating the wagon (Sports Tourer) version of the new Astra, and while it will make its public debut this October at the Paris Motor Show, General Motors is already spilling the virtual beans.

Inside, the Astra Sports Tourer uses a new FlexFold rear seat system, which allows rear seats to be folded down simply by pressing a button in the tailgate. We commonly see this feature on larger SUVs and minivans, and the Astra is the first compact wagon to have this function. With the rear seats down, the Sports Tourer can accommodate up to 54.7 cubic feet of haulables.

Not only is the Astra Sports Tourer quite functional, it has the makings of a vehicle that's relatively good to drive, too. Opel has fitted its FlexRide adaptive suspension system to the wagon, with standard, tour and sport driving modes. Eight engine choices are available, ranging from 95 to 180 horsepower, including the turbocharged 1.4-liter four that's slated for use in the U.S.-market Chevrolet Cruze.

It looks to be a fun little wagon, this Astra, and it makes us wish that there were enough buyers for such vehicles over here in the States. Have a look for yourself by either scrolling through the gallery below or watching the video (complete with Shaft-inspired soundtrack) after the jump.

Car and Driver has prognosticated that we'll get other versions of the Buick Regal, but we still don't know if we'll get this one: the Opel Astra Sport 'Coupe.' Wearing much less cladding than when we've seen before, it's obvious this one has gone all sleek-and-creased compared to its predecessor, and it looks like the extended-windshield option will make it to production for the Volkswagen Scirocco rival, as well.

The markets that will get the hot hatch, namely Europe and China (for starters), will have four engine options ranging from a 1.4-liter turbo to the 240-hp, 2.0-liter direct injected turbo inline-four going in the VXR model. The big reveal is likely set for the Paris Motor Show this September, but you can get a sneak peek at it now in the gallery of high-res photos below.
The prototype appears to have a more steeply raked windshield than the five-door currently available in Europe and China where it's badged as a Buick and sold under the Excelle nameplate.

Power will come from a range of gas and diesel engines, including the 1.4-liter turbo that debuts this fall in the Chevrolet Cruze, a normally aspirated 1.6-liter and 210 horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged engine for the GSi. The top of the range VXR will likely a get a version of the 2.0-liter direct injected turbo inline-four putting out around 240 hp.

We know the sedan version of the Astra is joining the Buick lineup here in the U.S., but Buick officials declined to comment on whether this model will join the four door model.

The Opel/Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer - otherwise known as a wagon or estate - is testing its cold weather chops with minimal camouflage.

Details on the little cargo carrier are slim, but snappers at CarPix tell us that the rear liftgate differs from that on the larger Insignia ST by being separated from the taillights. We are also told that the interior and engine options will be the same as on the five-door hatch, and a spicy GSi model is on the way to fill out the line. It's too bad no one from Buick will tell us in the States, "Yes, you can have it..." You can check it out from various angles in the gallery of high-res photos below.

The 2010 Astra is one nice-looking hatch, and the good people at Opel are going to great lengths to show the world their five-door accomplishment. The latest example of Astra pride comes in the form of a two-and-a-half minute short that plays off of the clever nature of the Oceans movies starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

If you haven't seen any of the Oceans trilogy, each film centers around a Las Vegas casino and a gang of crafty crooks that take the owner for everything he has. All three films are edited with quick cuts and multiple clips showing at the same time. The Astra TV spot also involves a Casino and some fancy editing, but the dozen or so criminals are replaced with three "agents" trying to get their hands on the plans for the world's most expensive casino. Of course, there are also plenty of shots of the Astra highlighting features like the "Astra Eye" that can read traffic signals and headlights that turn with you.

By now, you've likely already seen official shots of the 2010 Opel Astra, both inside and out. Of course, catching a glimpse of a new shape under the harsh lighting of an auto show often brings a different point of view than the automaker's own glitzy press shots.

In the case of the latest Astra, though, the new car looks nearly as fetching caught with the lenses of our own DSLRs as it did in GM's official photography. We especially like the new Astra's interior furnishings, which are a major step up from the current model's rather boring and somber duds.

While the 2010 Astra won't be coming Stateside as a Saturn like the previous model, GM has promised to bring the latest Detla-based car to American shores (probably in sedan form) wearing the trademark Buick badge and chrome waterfall grille, and none of those plans are expected to change now that The General has offloaded a majority stake in Opel to Magna. Check out our high-res shots below of the 2010 Astra live from Frankfurt.

2010 Chevy Spark - Click above for a hi-res image gallery

General Motors has issued a cryptic press release suggesting it plans to retool an existing plant here in the United States to build a new small car. No specifics are given on what small car this may be, as the missive only says that the plant will have the capacity to build up to 160,000 small and compact cars and that "this vehicle adds to GM's growing portfolio of U.S.-built, highly fuel efficient cars including the Chevrolet Cruze and Volt." Know what that means? It's speculation time!

GM's most well-known small car is arguably the Chevy Spark, which was introduced earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show and is based on the Beat concept from 2007. It's possible this is the small car GM is referring to, but it's not the only option. The automaker could also introduce a model slightly larger than the Spark that would still slot below the upcoming Chevy Cruze compact that's slated to replace the aging Chevrolet Cobalt, possibly based on either the Opel Corsa or Astra. Have any other ideas? Check out the press release after the jump, and then free to sound off in the comments.

Gallery: 2010 Chevy Spark

[Source: General Motors]
Continue reading GM announces plans to build new small car in U.S. - but which one will it be?

GM announces plans to build new small car in U.S. - but which one will it be? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 May 2009 14:27:00 EST.
With the Frankfurt Auto Show looming on the horizon, German automakers in particular have been preparing their latest offerings for their debuts. And even with its future still hanging in the balance, General Motors' Opel division has just released a series of teasers of its upcoming new Astra to be unveiled at the Frankfurt show in September.

Although based on the platform that will underpin the Chevrolet Volt, the Opel Astra (and the Vauxhall-badged version to follow) will be powered by conventional engines...at least at first. A downsized 1.4-liter turbo is expected to form the standard engine, with a 2.0-liter turbo version wearing Opel's OPC badge (and Vauxhall's VXR) to follow.

The new Astra will reportedly be available in several bodystyles, starting with this five-door hatch. A four-door sedan is expected to follow, along with a five-door wagon and two-door hardtop convertible, while the three-door hatch version carrying the GTC label promises to follow the lead of the Renault Megane with a more coupe-like profile previewed by the Opel GTC concept from Geneva 2007.

Of course, with the GM global empire on the verge of disintegration, it's hard to say at this point where the Astra might end up. We'll have to wait for more over the course of the summer, but in the meantime, feast your eyes on the teasers in the gallery below.

Gallery: 2010 Opel Astra teasers

[Source: Opel via CarScoop]
Opel does a fan-dance with 2010 Astra teasers originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 May 2009 14:28:00 EST. At this point, nobody is sure if the car will show up as a hatchback or as a sedan or what the car will be named. Skylark anyone? No?

We're hardly convinced this is good news for Buick. While Buick-GMC dealerships that are about to lose the Pontiac brand might disagree with our take, we have to wonder if an entry-level Buick might compete with upper-level versions of the upcoming Chevy Cruze. Sound familiar to anyone else?

[Source: GM Inside News]
Rumormill: Buick Astra coming in 2011? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 May 2009 14:01:00 EST.
2010 Opel Astra renderings - Click above for image gallery

What we have here are reported to be official renderings from General Motors of the next-generation Opel Astra line, including the hatchback, high-performance GTC model and wagon, or what the Europeans call the Estate. Due out in Europe as a 2010 model, the redesigned Astra will feature many design cues from the well received mid-size Insignia sedan, including swept back headlamps, concave surfacing and a more soft appearance than the all-angles current Astra. The GTC model also appears to have shape shifted from its current form as a hatchback to a coupe. The profile of the Estate model, meanwhile, gets some extra rear overhang versus the five-door hatch and a forward-tilting D-pillar.

The big question left unanswered is whether or not the new Astra will be seen on this side of the Atlantic. The current Saturn Astra is a direct import from Opel in Europe, but General Motors doesn't plan to supply Saturn with vehicles anymore after its current lineup's lifecycle. That won't happen until around 2012 and the new Astra should be unveiled in Europe later this year, which means there's overlap there. Regardless, GM is likely not willing or able to spend money on importing a car for a brand it has pledged to shed.

Gallery: 2010 Opel Astra - Renderings

[Source: Carscoop]
2010 Opel Astra hatch, GTC coupe and wagon revealed originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Apr 2009 12:59:00 EST.
