Concerned about possible oil leaks in one of its popular K series engines, Honda is notifying 1,200 owners to visit their local dealer for an inspection. The affected engine is the 2.4-liter four-cylinder found under the hood of the 2011 Honda Accord (non-V6 models) and 2011 Honda CR-V (all models).

According to a service bulletin the automaker sent to its dealers on December 3, an engine part may have been cast improperly, thereby allowing engine oil to leak. All told, there are about 9,300 vehicles that may be subject to inspection. However, most of those 2011 models (5,000 Accords and 4,300 CR-Vs) are still unsold and in dealer inventory.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will issue a formal recall for items/failures it deems safety hazards - this does not fall under those guidelines. An oil leak of this nature is considered a repair, one that is covered under the automaker's new car warranty (no charge to the customer). Honda will begin notifying customers before the end of the month.
Mazda has confirmed to us that owners will be receiving notices in the next month or so, as the company is doing a staggered roll-out across the country.

Mazda has also told us that the repairs needed for each RX-8 will vary based on tests performed by each dealer. Automotive News is reporting that each car will receivea vacu um test to check for oil leaks, and those vehicles suffering from sealing problems will receive new Renesis side-port rotary engines. Robert Davis, head of product development and quality at Mazda, told Automotive News that the company does not want dealers tearing into the engines, and instead will send the defective motors to its remanufacturing plant in North Carolina. Each vehicle will also receive a check of its starting system, as that supposedly has been problematic. Davis described the campaign as "white-glove treatment".

Mazda claims that the problem is brought on by hot climates or the usage of synthetic oil. If the oil is allowed into the combustion chamber, it eventually reaches the catalytic converter and causes a malfunction of that emissions-control device.
