A slew of recent trademark filings by General Motors had us daydreaming about the return of Chevrolet models like the El Camino and Nomad, but alas, Automotive News is reporting that the automaker is just keeping up on its paperwork. In order to prevent losing the names to other companies, automakers have to routinely renew the trademark filings for previously used names.

To realize the importance of name trademarks, we only have to look to the Ford Fusion. As the story goes, Ford originally wanted to call this new sedan the Futura, but Pep Boys had assumed control of the name for a line of tires forcing Ford to choose another name. With the Holden Commodore heading back to the US as the Chevrolet SS, we'd still like to believe there's a Holden Ute pickup heading our way with a bowtie on the grille.

While the article all but shoots down our hopes of a new El Camino or Nomad, it makes no mention of the ZR2 name, which also recently came up in similar trademark paperwork and was an off-road-ready trim level on the S10 and Blazer.
Chevy says El Camino and Nomad trademark filings were just routine paperwork originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Dec 2012 11:28:00 EST.
There are certain truths about Chevrolet wagons that we hold to be self-evident. Fourth generation long-roof Caprice models are all kinds of awesome, especially when packing the luscious Corvette-sourced 5.7-liter LT1 under the hood. Additionally, the '57 Nomad is one of the most beautiful wagons to ever prowl the wide open spaces of our fine country. That doesn't mean that we're all for blending the two vehicles together, though. That didn't stop one Thomas Taylor of California from penning the beastie you see above. Rolling under the "Alter Nomad" banner, the vehicle is a whole heap of almost awesome.

While the fin work out back does much to banish the bubble rear of the Caprice, tricks like the rocket hood spears and painted chrome insets make our stomachs churn. The saddest part of this tale is the fact that this particular machine rolls with the weaker 5.0-liter V8. Even with a remarkably low 81,116 miles on the odometer, the mill isn't exactly on our list of world-class lumps. If this kind of kit is your bag of marbles, head over to eBay Motors for a closer look. While the auction has just ended, the bidding only got up to $6,500 with an unmet reserve, so we're thinking if you want to make this trans-generational mashup yours, all you have to do is call the dealer, Discover Classic Cars in Arizona, and raid your piggy bank.

Superior Glass Works 54 Sports Wagon - Click above for high-res image gallery

About two years ago, there was a nasty rumor that Ford was developing sedan and wagon variants of (gasp!) the Mustang. Torches were lit and pitchfork futures soared until Ford totally debunked the rumor.

But 55 years ago, something similar took place at the 1954 Motorama in New York when Chevrolet displayed a Corvette-based wagon called the Nomad. The difference in the two stories, according to at least one Web site, is that the public absolutely loved the show car's styling. Smelling opportunity, GM management rushed the Nomad into production without even one trace of Corvette styling.

There are those who still hold a grudge against GM for not following through with a Corvette-based station wagon. For the latter fans, their 55-year wait might be over if they saved at least $2,300 a year.

For $125,000 Superior Glass Works will sell you a 1954 Corvette Nomad recreated in fiberglass and fittingly built on a Corvette C5 chassis. The choice of engine, interior and wiring is up to you after you get it home and at extra cost. A $50,000 deposit will reserve one of the 25 copies to be built. Brad Peterson, owner of Specialty, tells us that pre-orders were not taken and no cars have yet been sold. But if you're interested, he said you can check out the Superior 54 Sport Wagon in person at Back to the 50s in St. Paul, Minn. June 19-21 or at the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, August 6-9.

Gallery: Superior 54 Sport Wagon

[Source: Hemmings Autoblogs]
Continue reading Superior Glass Works to sell 54 Sports Wagon based on C5 Corvette

Superior Glass Works to sell 54 Sports Wagon based on C5 Corvette originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 10:58:00 EST.
How many hours does it take to turn a 1955 Chevy Nomad into the award-winning Chevy "Newmad"? 22,000 hours. Yes, you read that correctly. One Newmad equals 84 Rolls-Royce Phantoms.

The Newmad began its life as the first generation Nomad, the halo model wagon derived from the Motorama Corvette of 1953-54. Whizbang hotrod designer Chris Ito was commissioned by a Phoenix couple to pen the redesign, and after fixing the shape, the aforementioned 22,000 hours of elbow grease were put in at Steve's Auto Restorations in Portland, Oregon. The word "custom" barely begins to describe it. The chassis was created specifically for the car, the suspension is from a 2000 Corvette, the body's been lengthened, the sheet metal was created by hand, and all of the glass is one-off. The interior pulls from almost every marque known, including a Mercury Marauder cowl, Lexus seats, Jaguar interior door handles, and Porsche window switches. Oh, and the leather is custom as well. The package is powered by a 500 cubic inch aluminum big block with a 4L80E transmission. And thanks to eBay, the Newmad can be yours for the Buy It Now price of $695,000. Which is a bargain, really -- that's only 1.5 Phantoms. (You can read the full story of the Newmad here.)

According to their sources, the new ute will debut as a 2009 model to replace the abhorrent Chevy Uplander.

Not so, says Josh Oliver from The GM Source. His sources, also deep within General Motors, claim that reviving the "Nomad" name, which most recently was used on a Kappa-based concept in 2004 (shown above), has never even "appeared on the radar screen" during discussions of how to christen the new crossover. Oliver's sources also claim the CUV will appear in 2009 as a 2010 model.

Who to believe? We don't really care, because it's just a name. We're more concerned that GM's spreading the Lamda platform too thin across four brands. While the Buick Enclave manages to differentiate itself well from therest of the pack, the Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia already appear too close for our comfort. Hopefully the Chevy version doesn't come off as an Acadia with a Malibu grille.

[Source: TheGMSource]
Battle of the Sources: Use of Nomad name on Chevy CUV refuted originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Mar 2007 11:07:00 EST. Sporting seven seats and carrying many of the same lines as its GMC sibling, the Acadia, IL's sources say that although the name harkens back to times gone by, the styling won't. And it's doubtful that any cues will be taken from the 2004 concept that shares the same badge.

[Source: Inside Line]
Chevy to revive Nomad name for new crossover originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Mar 2007 09:24:00 EST.
