With the entire Nissan 370Z lineup having just received some slight tweaks for the 2013 model year, the sportier Nismo model is getting a few more upgrades for its 2014 model year to give it an even more unique appearance. These changes include new gray accents and red striping on the outside, and inside, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and a new red Nismo tachometer front and center for the driver to easily see.

The 2014 Nissan 370Z Nismo is debuting today at the Chicago Auto Show, and it will go on sale this summer offered in just four exterior colors: Pearl White, Magnetic Black, Gun Metallic and Solid Red. As for the coupe's performance, it still retains the higher 350-horsepower rating from the 3.7-liter V6, which is paired solely to the six-speed manual transmission. Other performance add-ons include a more aerodynamic front fascia and rear spoiler, 19-inch wheels with a sport suspension and a strut tower brace for better rigidity.

Typically Jay Leno's Garage gives us cool insights on rare, old and sometimes forgotten car models. In the latest episode, however, Jay takes us along to visit Nissan in Japan, where he talks about the next-generation of Z car.

The usually well-informed Leno starts the episode not knowing exactly what he's driving in a very special edition Nissan Fairlady 240ZG, though he does pronounce himself a fast fan of the original Z. After briefly motoring around Zama, Japan, The Chin drops in on the Nissan Technical Center, and gets the chance to ask Nissan design boss Shiro Nakamura, if there will be a new Z to mark Nissan's 80th anniversary in 2013. Jay also takes the opportunity to offer some insight as to what he'd like to see in a 2014 successor to the current 370Z.

Good times, as usual, with the king of car collecting.
How often do you leave a comment on a post, "It would be cool if that car had (insert Part X)." It's always fun to think "what if?" Well, Nissan has taken advantage of the creative minds of enthusiasts everywhere by crowdsourcing the build of a custom 370Z. Nothing was off limits for modification. The engine, wheels, tires, interior, and exterior were all subject to vote. Nissan even asked you what suspension to use.

The build is finally complete and Nissan is ready to show off the fruits of your choices. In stage one, Steven Lam and his team of fellow mechanics removed the front clip and hoses in order to pull the engine. Once out, the 3.7-liter six was fitted with a Greddy twin turbo kit that Lam estimates will push output over 500 horsepower. To complement the twin snails, fans chose a Greddy Ti-C catback system for more freely flowing exhaust.

Next up was the suspension, which was left to a vote by Autoblog readers (you're just gonna have to click on the first video below to see which one was selected), followed by a Stoptech big brake kit.

In stage two, the car was dyno'd, the fuel/air mix tweaked, and the aesthetics were addressed. Click on the second video to see their progress, and the final video for the eventual reveal of the crowd-customized 370Z.

Continue reading Nissan shows off crowdsourced 370Z

Nissan shows off crowdsourced 370Z originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Aug 2012 14:58:00 EST.
Episode #290 of the Autoblog Podcast is here, and this week is a sad one, since it's Chris Shunk's last show before moving on from Autoblog. Chris, Dan, and Zach are joined by Autoblog editor-in-chief John Neff to chat about some of our reminisces with Mr. Shunk over his tenure, as well as bit into news topics like BMW sending more diesels, a lighter, smaller Nissan Z, the dislike heaped upon the Chevrolet Malibu Eco, and Jeep Grand Cherokee moose test dust-up. Your questions and comments power the end of the 'cast, and for those of you who hung with us live on our UStream channel, thanks for taking the time. We've embedded our Q&A module after the jump for you to scroll through and follow along, too. Thanks for listening!

Nissan is reportedly hard at work on its next-generation Z. According to Inside Line, designers are already churning away on a concept version of the 2015 Z that may bow at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. The report notes that Shiro Nakamura, head of design for Nissan, says the new Z will be both smaller and lighter than the current 370Z.

The model will also be geared toward a wider audience, and Nissan may be investigating the possibility of ditching the tried-and-true 3.7-liter VQ V6 for a turbocharged four-cylinder, a move that would almost certainly help fuel efficiency. The current Z is saddled with a lackluster 26 mpg highway, and strong early sales of cars like the Scion FR-S certainly indicate certain buyers are willing to drop a few ponies for a machine that's engaging to drive and at least somewhat fuel efficient.

Blasphemy? Maybe, but the thought of an engaging, lightweight turbo four sports car is the stuff dreams are made of - it's the "wider audience" part of the discussion that has us concerned as enthusiasts. A smaller Z would likely mean abandoning the Z's FM platform which also underpins machines like the Infiniti G Coupe and Sedan as well as the FX softroader. Inside Line says Nissan may turn to its corporate partner Daimler for some help in the chassis department.
Next Nissan Z will be smaller, lighter originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 10:00:00 EST.

Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S got you excited? Well, it appears the new Toyobaru twins might be moving the needle at other automakers, too. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the pair may have challenged Nissan to once again reinvestigate its on-again, off-again plans for an affordable, lightweight sports coupe of its own. Nissan's Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura, says his employer is looking at downsizing its Z sports car, though it isn't clear if that would mean the Japanese automaker would field two separate Z models or just replace the current 370Z with a smaller, less costly model.

"I much prefer smaller sports car," Nakamura tells the Herald. "It is the time to look at that. With 370Z, we still don't know next generation will have a larger or smaller engine."

If Nissan were to reduce the size of the 370's powerplant, it would be the first time that model's displacement has dropped. Since the Z gets its model designation from the size of its engine (3.7 liter V6), Nissan could have a problem marketing a smaller Z called the 300Z, since the last time a new 300Z was sold in the States was way back in 1986.

More likely would be the revival of long-forgotten nameplates like 200SX or 240SX. Either would almost certainly be direct competition for the Subaru and Scion rear-drive coupes.

Nakamura reminded fans that even if the 370Z loses some cubic inches, Nissan will still have the young but already legendary GT-R. When asked if Nissan would be willing to support three sports cars, Nakamura says, "If there is a market, we will do it."
Nissan renews talk of sub-370Z sports car to take on Subaru BRZ originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 Apr 2012 14:30:00 EST.
Back on Thanksgiving Day of 2011, we saw what happens when a C5 Chevrolet Corvette goes head-to-head on public roads against a C6 Vette - the older Vette spears into the passenger-side door of the newer Vette. The video was our most popular post of 2011, so we know that well over a million viewers saw the ill-advised drag race. We think that video illustrated that racing on public roads was a bad idea, but sometimes, accidents happen even without a race.

Hit the jump to see what happens when a pair of tuned-out Nissan 350Z models do their best impression of the Thanksgiving Day Melee. The YouTube page claims that the two cars were actually traveling at the speed limit (read: not racing) as part of a caravan of Z models, when the black, supercharged Z coupe tapped its throttle and lost control, veering into the passing lane and right into the path of a Z roadster.

Still, the collision looks like déjà vu all over again, except the quick video is better this time and we actually hear the impact and see the parts flying all over the freeway. The accident reportedly didn't result in any serious injuries.
Continue reading First it was Vette on Vette violence, now it's Z on Z carnage

First it was Vette on Vette violence, now it's Z on Z carnage originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Jan 2012 12:30:00 EST.
Everyone's got their favorite superheroes, and their reasons for liking them. Ours drive cool cars. Comic-book-turned-big-screen do-gooders like Batman (and his mild-mannered alter-ego Bruce Wayne) and Iron Man (Tony Stark). That's just one of the reasons we're stoked for The Driver.

The animated series-in-the-making centers around a mysterious vigilante who chases down criminally reckless drivers on the streets of Los Angeles, and a shutterbug sidekick who follows him around as he puts the baddies to shame in Gorillaz-style animation. It's shaping up to be as car-obsessed as the best of us, and after launching the first trailer back in April of 2010, the creators have now (the better part of two years later) released some additional footage. Follow the jump to see Nissan's 370Z square off against its own GT-R.
Continue reading Second trailer for The Driver finally speeds into action

Second trailer for The Driver finally speeds into action originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 14:58:00 EST.
Fifth Gear host Tiff Needell had such a good time throwing the Renault Sport Megane 265 Trophy around the track that it made him ask a silly question. Could the 261-horsepower, front-wheel drive, four-seat hot hatch lap quicker than the 324-hp, rear-wheel drive, two-seat Nissan 370Z?

This version of the Renault lapped the Nürburgring in 8:07.97, the quickest front-wheel-drive road car on the timing sheet. Even so, 63 hp down and more than 70 pounds heavier by gross weight, one could expect the Megane to have a hard time even keeping up with the Z. But on a wet track and at the hands of Subaru Rally driver and James Bond stunt driver Mark Higgins (he of the epic Isle of Man save), expectations have a way of going sideways.
Nissan is headed to the Dubai 24 Hours with a specially prepared 370Z. While the 410-horsepower Z is an impressive piece of hardware, we're more interested in who's behind the wheel. This year, Nissan will take to the track with a full team of racers who have graduated from the company's GT Academy. The four-man team is made up of individuals who got their start on the virtual tracks of the Gran Turismo video game franchise before beating out the competition for a spot on track.

Lucas Ordonez of Madrid won the 2008 GT Academy, and the young driver has since managed to take second place in the LMP2 class of the 2011 Le Mans series. The 26-year old also took home the honor of being named Rookie Of The Year in the 2011 Le Mans International Cup. Ordonez will be joined by 23-year-old Frenchman Jordon Tressman, who won the 2010 GT Academy and the 2011 Blancpain Endurance Series.

Jann Mardenborough, the 20-year-old racer who won the 2011 GT Academy will also join the team alongside this year's GT Academy USA winner, Bryan Heikotter. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Nissan fielding driving team of only GT Academy winners for Dubai 24 Hours

Nissan fielding driving team of only GT Academy winners for Dubai 24 Hours originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 16:00:00 EST.
As well-known as Nissan is for sports cars like the 370Z and GT-R, it's also known on racing circuits for its formidable competition machinery. In fact, Nissan has just enjoyed one of its most successful racing seasons yet, and on the back of that season, it is releasing a new customer racing car.

The Nissan 370Z Nismo RC packs an array of competition modifications. Its weight has been trimmed to 2,954 pounds and its 3.7-liter V6 engine juiced up to 355 horsepower - just slightly more than the street-legal Nismo Z. That power increase comes courtesy of a competition-spec exhaust and returned engine management. The RC also packs a race-spec clutch, flywheel, plus oil, transmission and diff coolers. Inside is a Recaro racing bucket with a six-point harness, Sparco steering wheel and carbon-fiber dash, plus a full FIA-regulation roll cage and fire extinguisher.

The package was designed from the get-go to meet FIA GT4 regulations, as well as World Challenge GTS specifications and Nissan says it can easily be modified to race in the Grand-Am GS class as well. Full details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Nissan rolls out competition-spec 370Z NISMO

Nissan rolls out competition-spec 370Z NISMO originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Oct 2011 10:59:00 EST.
The team at Nissan UK has worked up a new spot for the company's 370Z that features plenty of wing-to-fender action. Set in a seedy underworld where poultry is pitted against sheetmetal in a dire race for bragging rights, the 370Z is seen battling the latest descendant in a long line of racing chickens. The chicken in question supposedly excels in the corners, though predictably enough, he's no match for the tail-sliding action of the Z.

Does any of this make sense? Of course not, but neither do a bunch of rapping hamsters, and we still love those. Considering that Kia just walked away with the winning nod at the Nielsen Top Auto Ad of the Year awards for the company's "This or That" spot, Nissan may be hoping to cash in on the animal craze in its own way, though we have to wonder if the ad might not ruffle a few feathers over at PETA.
17-year-old pistol-whipping honor roll student wants Nissan - Click above to watch video

A 17-year-old girl from Fort Myers, Florida allegedly pistol-whipped her mother into buying her a 2004 Nissan 350Z last week. The teen, an Ivy League-bound honor student at the prestigious Canterbury School, reportedly lost control when her mother refused to co-sign on the car.

According to the Naples Daily, Rachel Ann Hachero went home after her mother's refusal grabbed a 9mm Sig Sauer pistol, hit her mother with it, and demanded she accompany her to the dealership. Not wanting to get shot, the mother complied and signed off on the purchase. The next day, while her daughter was at school, the mother recovered the gun and drug paraphernalia from the girl's purse and called the police.

Hachero's mom says she doesn't want to press charges because of her daughter's Ivy League scholarships, but a judge says Hachero must remain in juvenile detention for the time being. The girl has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, unlawful possession of a firearm by a person younger than 18 and battery. To make matters worse, the gun was found to be one of three stolen from a Lee County, Florida Port Authority employee last July. Top tip, Berto!

The Datsun 240Z is a pantheon vehicle. By that we mean it belongs on many a car enthusiasts' all-time great vehicle lists. If you're in the market, there are plenty of options on eBay that will help you put one in your driveway. One Datsun in particular has caught our eye due to the quality of its execution. How much would it cost to own the beautiful S30 shown above? If you wanted to Buy It Now, you'd better have $85,000 burning a hole in your pocket.

That's right, we said $85,000, and that figure is reduced from an ambitious previous asking price of $125,000. What could cause someone to think their Z is worth that much? A complete frame-off restoration and a parts list that makes us think the owner is capable of Inception, since it reads like something from our modified car dreams.

Under the hood sits a SR20DET, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine taken from a 2002 Nissan Silvia. The suspension and brakes have been upgraded with Arizona Z car and Wilwood components. Basically, anything that could've been upgraded has been taken care of.

Still, you'd be hard-pressed to find a 240Z buyer looking to plunk down that many Benjamins for a car. There's no doubt that leading Japanese classics are climbing in price, and this car might be snatched up quickly at half the asking price. Head over to eBay Motors for the full listing. Thanks for the tip, Sid!

eBay Find of the Day: 1991 Nissan 300ZX convertible concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Finding a Nissan 300ZX convertible is not necessarily an amazing eBay occurrence. Finding the 1991 300ZX folding hardtop convertible concept car, however, is quite a big deal.

Nissan sold the Z32, or second generation 300ZX, in the United States from 1990 to 1996. In 1993, the automaker launched a convertible version to go along with existing t-top and hardtop variants. This came in response to aftermarket companies offering convertible conversions. Before the 1993 convertible came out, Nissan produced a concept version that was shown at the 1992 Paris, Geneva and Detroit auto shows. And while the production car utilized soft-tops, however this concept featured a power-folding, retractable hardtop.

Working with American Sunroof Corporation (ASC), Nissan built its own convertible 300ZX and showed it off around the world. This car is now for sale on eBay, with a Buy-It-Now price of $62,000. Power is provided by the standard 3.0-liter V6 and it's paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The car only shows 8,202 miles on the odometer and, along with the very unique top, features one-off 17-inch polished aluminum wheels.

Is $62,000 too high a price to pay for such a unique piece of Nissan's history? Maybe not if you factor in the original build cost, which was allegedly in excess of $800,000 (at least according to the seller's listing). Besides the car, the winning bidder will also get the original show stand and a ton of documentation in both written and video form.

Take a gander at this drop-top Nissan 300ZX in the gallery below, and be sure to take a look at the auction over at eBay Motors.

It's a rare thing to see a car penned by someone who's a die-hard fan. More often than not, designers are assigned to vehicles they have little or no emotional attachment to, and as such, the car buying public is regularly supplied with a slurry of bland appliances that do little to acknowledge a car's model history and next to nothing to advance the vehicle aesthetically.

Thankfully, that's not the case with the Nissan 370Z. Randy Rodriguez, the guy behind the original design of the 370Z, had owned 10 different Z cars before he sat down to sketch out the latest iteration of Nissan's low-buck sports machine. Autoblog had the chance to catch up with Rodriguez at the Z's 40th birthday bash last weekend in Franklin, TN. Hit the jump to read a few excerpts from the conversation, including talk about alternatively powered future Zs and how he drew inspiration for the car's look from the Discovery Channel.

The Nissan North America headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee played host to the 23rd Annual Z Car Convention this past weekend. While we missed out on Friday's autocross and drift challenge action, we were on hand Saturday morning for the car show. Owners from around the country rolled out their pieces of Z history, from the 240Z to the 370Z. Nissan itself pulled a few heritage models out of the mothballs and parked them on the lawn for all to enjoy. Talk about tasty.

There were even a handful of vintage machines with nary a Z or Fairlady badge in their bloodline on display as well. We were particularly smitten with the blue Patrol poised to go where no 240Z had gone before. Likewise, there were a bevy of cars from the Z's racing history nestled at the foot of the Nissan tower. No matter how hard we begged, the Nissan crew wouldn't let play with the East African Safari 240Z in the open fields around the headquarters, but they did trot out the refreshed 2011 Rogue crossover, and more to the point, they were kind enough to let us have a peek under the fiberglass of Paul Newman's Bob Sharp prepared 1981 Datsun ZX Turbo. That'll do.
Last month, the marketing team at Mini had quite a bit of fun at the expense of the German sports car maker, daring the storied automaker to step into the ring to take on a Mini Cooper S at Road Atlanta. A privately sourced 911 ended up kicking the Mini's go-kart-handling butt to the curb, but even in defeat, the British marquee had the nerve to mention that the 911's two-second victory would cost the typical weekend warrior about $36,000 per second.

Mini isn't the first automaker to go after Porsche; Nissan has been nipping at the heels of the 911 since the venerable GT-R hit the streets a couple years back. Nissan was back at its German rival during the Goodwood Festival of Speed last week, with a splattering of advertising preaching general superiority. Nissan smacked at Porsche, Audi and BMW on a giant billboard at London's BFI IMAX cinema and on smaller postcards handed out. The ads are part of a UK-wide campaign that includes such slogans as "How to beat the Germans" and amusingly, "Kaisers Chiefed" and "The Germans Came Off Wurst." The aggressive campaign at Goodwood included a brace of Nissan GT-R and 370Z models displayed wearing BMW, Audi and Porsche logos next to fighter plane-style kill marks.

So, is Porsche going to take this face-slap sitting down? Actually, lawyers at the German automaker have already blew the whistle on the ad, but not because of any embarrassment, pain or trauma it may have caused. Instead, Porsche suits simply asked that any unauthorized use of its crest trademark be removed. Nissan is reportedly removing the trademarks and continuing the ad campaign. For our money, we'd rather see the lawyers stay out of this fight and get a GT-R and a 911 Turbo on the 'Ring for a final showdown.

Chances are, you've probably thought about what exactly you would buy if you had money bleeding out of every bodily orifice. Allow us to add another candidate to the list: Paul Newman's 1987 Nissan 300ZX IMSA racecar. Yes, that Paul Newman - the 24 Hours of Le Mans finisher and SCCA champion. Now, we know past ownership isn't reason enough to hand over $300,000, but that's just fine. This car packs a walloping 750 horsepower from a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. The stock gearbox has been abandoned in favor of a Weismann five-speed, and the rear differential was replaced with a Stock Car Products piece. That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Newman's Own Z, this car was campaigned throughout 1987, landing a best place finish of third place at the same time. The following year, it was handed over to Scott Sharp, in whose capable hands it managed to rack up a multitude of wins. The car has been restored since then, and has only competed in a total of four vintage races since work was completed. Of those, Newman's wicked Nissan managed to pull off three wins. Not too shabby. If you want it as badly as we do and have the means to procure it, the car is up for grabs on eBay Motors. Top tip, Ramin!

Nissan 370Z 40th anniversary - Click above for high-res image gallery

Given the reality of upcoming CO2 emissions regulations in both Europe and North America, it's not much of a stretch to assume that the next generation Nissan Z will get more fuel efficient. How Nissan will manage to extract those extra miles per gallon and reduced emissions is purely conjecture on the part of everyone outside of Nissan's engineering staff at this point.

Thankfully, the British motoring press has no aversion to speculation or even simply stuff up. In the wake of the cooperation deal between Daimler and the Renault-Nissan alliance, the future of the Z is a ripe target for such prognostication. Could the 370Z successor get a version of the 3.5-liter V6 hybrid powertrain from the Mercedes S400? How about a V6 diesel or inline-four diesel-hybrid?

Anything's possible, but not necessarily probable. Given the personality that customers expect from a Z, we think something along the lines of a downsized, boosted gasoline V6 is a much more likely configuration. The relatively low volumes of the Z would easily be balanced out by all of the electric vehicles Nissan is planning to build without having to do anything too radical to the sports car.
