Episode #332 of the Autoblog Podcast is here, and this week, Dan Roth and Zach Bowman talk about the Jaguar F-Type Coupe, the simultaneous market share gains by domestic automakers for the first quarter of 2013, and Volvo taking aim at the Volkswagen Golf. Our conversation about the Malaise Era's 40th anniversary with Rob Sass of Hagerty Classic Cars magazine had to be postponed, but look for it soon! We also address lots of your questions and comments, and for those of you who hung with us live on our UStream channel, thanks for taking the time. You can follow along after the jump with our Q&A. Thanks for listening!

Say what you will about the unconventional aesthetics that Nissan employed on the company's Juke. I love the thing. The universe has no shortage of ambiguously styled CUVs, and while I can't exactly say I would have turned to the amphibian world for design inspiration had it been me with the charcoal in my hand, I can certainly appreciate the fact that the Juke isn't just another box-on-box design.

And then there's that engine. The turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder under the hood is one of the best powerplants in the company's toy box, offering plenty of low-range torque and comical levels of thrust. Hell, it even makes the optional continuously variable transmission tolerable. Praise be to the deities of forced induction. But something has always been missing from the mix. From the first moment I got my hands on the Juke, I couldn't help but think how much better the machine would be if Nissan ditched an inch or two of ground clearance and sharpened up its suspension. Think more "hot hatch" and less "Kermit goes to Kroger."

I wasn't the only one with that notion. The minds at Nismo were keen to turn their attentions to the Juke, and while the resulting 2013 Juke Nismo isn't the hardcore machine I'd seen in my dreams, it may very well be the best trim available for the runabout.
Continue reading 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo

2013 Nissan Juke Nismo originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 May 2013 11:57:00 EST.
Intent on not eliminating itself from consideration, and adapting to the way consumers research new car purchases, Nissan has announced price discounts now in effect, indefinitely, on seven models: the Altima, Armada, Juke, Maxima, Murano, Rogue and Sentra. It was found that Nissan's price points fell outside the competitive pool when prospective buyers searched for cars based on maximum price.

The price cuts vary and depend on the equipment spec, but they range from several hundred dollars to thousands of dollars; the MSRP of the Altima drops by $580, the Sentra by $730, the Armada by $4,400. Discounts on the Murano alone range from $1,460 to $2,410. Under orders from CEO Carlos Ghosn the brand is working to raise its US market share to ten percent by 2016, from 7.9 percent currently - which includes Infiniti - and appears to be optimizing its placement every step of the way to do so.
Nissan lowers price of seven models for better search results originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 05 May 2013 15:29:00 EST.
Let's get this out of the way right off the bat: We don't know if the video you're about to watch really took place in the wild or if it were staged. That said, this appears to be one of the most alarming bits of road rage we've ever seen captured on video.

Let's set the scene. A motorcyclist is riding along with a good bit of distance between him and the black Nissan Juke in front of him before accelerating to catch up. The Juke driver moves to the left in order to avoid an obstacle in the road, cutting off the motorcyclist in the process, but everyone is fine. No harm, no foul? Hardly.

The motorcyclist falls way back, apparently biding his time and getting ready. Ready for what, you ask? Keep watching - the altercation concludes with an angle grinder, a frightened Juke driver and the loss of one minor appendage that once belonged to said Juke. Finally, a sticker that says 'NTV' is placed on the car's window, a fellow motorist appears to come to the driver's aid and the motorcyclist makes a quick getaway. Craziness.

Scroll down below to see it all unfold on video.
Continue reading Angry Russian motorcyclist has an axe to grind with Nissan Juke

Angry Russian motorcyclist has an axe to grind with Nissan Juke originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Apr 2013 19:59:00 EST.
With the BRZ/FR-S selling like mad, it's no surprise other carmakers are looking jealously at the sales numbers. If rumors are to be believed, Nissan is no exception.

Motor Trend says it's been told Nissan is working on its own sports coupe to compete with Toyota and Subaru. It's not the first time we've heard such plans, though. Back in 2008, Nissan was reportedly working on a 240SX successor but as the economy started running out of gas, so did that project.

Nissan did, however, show off the Compact Sport Concept at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show pictured above. Looking very much Juke-like but a bit shorter, and, well, compact.

Coincidentally, rumors say the new plan is to use the Juke platform. Inside the company the project is being called the "Mini-Z," despite the fact it would almost certainly be front-wheel or all-wheel drive. That would help differentiate it from the BRZ/FR-S, but would certainly turn off those of us with sportier intentions.

Nissan's 190-horsepower, 1.6-liter turbo was underhood in the concept, and if used in the production car, would have fewer horses but a wider torque band than its competitors from Toyota and Subaru.

Motor Trend says the U.S. probably wouldn't be the initial target market, but instead China, Japan and Europe would be first with American buyers still in consideration. The mag's source says the Mini-Z should be close in size to Honda's CR-Z and should start production sometime late next year. Check out Nissan's press release on the Compact Sport Concept below.
Continue reading Nissan working on Juke-based BRZ/FR-S rival?

Nissan working on Juke-based BRZ/FR-S rival? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 18:55:00 EST.
Ministry of Sound has grown over the past two decades into an internationally renowned brand, including a record label, fashion line and series of consumer electronics. But it all started with a single room, designed by Martin Audio, that is said to have some of the best accoustics and finest sound systems in the world. Now Martin has applied the same formula to create the Nissan Juke Box.

The concept car packs a 19-kilowatt system with two 18-inch subwoofers capable of producing a staggering 150 dB. If that number doesn't mean anything to you, consider that it's louder than a 747 at take-off. Seriously. The Juke Box will tour Europe over the next six months, starting at Le Mans this weekend. If you're stuck on this side of the Atlantic, you can check it out in the image gallery above and the pair of video clips below.
Continue reading Nissan partners with Ministry of Sound for one-of-a-kind Juke Box [w/videos]

Nissan partners with Ministry of Sound for one-of-a-kind Juke Box [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 18:32:00 EST.
Sprightly as it is, the Nissan Juke manages to straddle the line between hatchback and crossover with aplomb. As such, it's one of the most suitable cute-utes for tuning, and that point hasn't lost on Nissan itself. The UK-based racing division of the Japanese automaker transformed the controversially-styled mini-CUV into the tarmac-munching Juke-R. But if that elite vehicle's stratospheric price tag turns you on and away at the same time, another Nissan division might have the answer for you.

What we're talking about is the new Juke Nismo. Having showcased a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show show last year, the company's performance arm is unveiling the production-spec performance crossover this coming weekend at the 24 Hours of Le Mans - an event with an unprecedented number of Nissan-powered vehicles on the grid, including the experimental DeltaWing prototype.

The enhancements to the Nismo model over the stock Juke include a more aggressive aero package complete with new front and rear bumpers, wider wheel arches, side skirts, a tailgate spoiler and a new grille. The flared fenders house wider 18-inch alloys, while the interior has been retrofitted with sportier control surfaces and red-stitched, suede-covered sport buckets with greater lateral support.

Just like the standard Juke, the engine is quoted as a 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct-injection four, though output figures have not been released (the North American spec Juke rings up 188 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque). The Nismo is enhanced, however, by a stiffer suspension, revised steering geometry and performance-tuned traction control with torque vectoring.

While the Juke Nismo will be available in Europe from the start of the new year - about six and a half months from now - Nissan has confirmed that the vehicle will be made available in its own Japanese Domestic Market and (most importantly) in the United States at an as-yet undisclosed later date. In the meantime, you can admire from afar in the high-res image gallery above and the press release below.
Continue reading Nissan unveils Juke Nismo hot-ute at Le Mans, will come to U.S.

Nissan unveils Juke Nismo hot-ute at Le Mans, will come to U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 13 Jun 2012 09:26:00 EST. The otherworldly curvy sheetmetal of the Nissan Juke has always seemed so far off the map as to appear more French than Japanese. After all, Gallic designers have a long history of creating bold and polarizing forms. So it comes as little surprise that AutoExpress is reporting that Nissan will let its corporate siblings at Renault borrow the fun-to-drive Juke crossover for a model of their own.

At least in the UK, the unnamed model will replace the slow-selling Koleos CUV. AutoExpress has worked up some renderings, and notably, they swap out the Juke's unusual front lighting for something a bit more traditional and more along the lines of the 2011 Geneva Motor Show Captur showcar.

Earlier speculation had the Captur coming to market riding atop Renault's closely related Clio architecture, but if this new report is accurate, Renault probably won't have to invest as much to bring the vehicle to market. Check out the full renderings at the link below, and sit tight, because AE doesn't expect the subcompact ute to arrive until sometime next year.
Renault to get own version of Nissan Juke originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Apr 2012 14:01:00 EST.

If you hear the pejorative "chick car," what comes to mind? Mazda MX-5 Miata? Volvo C70? Would you believe neither made Inside Line's list of 2011 models with the highest percentage of female ownership? No. 1, with 57.9-percent female ownership was the Volvo S40. Considering the female dollar is sought-after, it's probably too bad that Volvo decided to axe the model for 2012.

That means No. 2, the Nissan Rogue with 56.9 percent, could take the top spot for 2012. Or maybe the VW Eos at No. 3 with 56.4 percent. We're also kind of wondering how the new Fiat 500 will fare this year.

No. 4 is another VW that shouldn't surprise. The cute New Beetle has been a perennial favorite among the ladies. It was No. 1 a year ago, but as we know, the newer, more aggressively styled Beetle is enjoying increased interest among the guys. No. 5? The Toyota Matrix, of all things.

Here's how the rest shake out according to Inside Line:

Top ten 2011 models with the highest proportion of female buyers

 Volvo S40 - 57.9%

Nissan North America is recalling 2011 and 2012 Nissan Juke, Infiniti M and Infiniti QX models over a fuel pressure sensor issue. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it's possible that the sensors weren't tightened properly, which could lead to the sensor coming loose over time and an increased risk of a fire due to leaking fuel.

The recall begins on March 19. Nissan will notify owners, who can take their vehicles to the dealer to be repaired free of charge. A bulletin from NHTSA that has more information is after the jump.
Continue reading Nissan recalls Juke, Infiniti M and QX for possible fuel leaks

Nissan recalls Juke, Infiniti M and QX for possible fuel leaks originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 10:01:00 EST.
When is a Nissan Juke not a Nissan Juke? When it's the 480-horsepower, Godzilla-powered Juke-R, that's when. Then it's a supercar-beater. And to prove the point, Nissan UK took its one-off super-crossover down to Dubai for a little street racing action.

So what did Nissan pit its Juke-R against? No, not other crossovers, but a pack of the leanest, meanest supercars on the market: the Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Gallardo and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. We first saw video footage shot from the sidelines a couple of weeks ago, but since the publicity stunt proved so popular, Nissan responded by releasing an official, high-quality version, complete with in-car footage and plenty of tire squealing. Follow the jump to check it out.
Continue reading Nissan releases official footage of Juke-R supercar street race in Dubai

Nissan releases official footage of Juke-R supercar street race in Dubai originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Jan 2012 12:32:00 EST.
The Nissan Juke-R found some adventurous extracurriculars to take part in while in Dubai to pace the Dunlop 24-Hour race. Nissan said it would be making a film of the Juke-R taking on other street-legal supercars in the Dubai International Marina, but that race is meant to include a Mercedes/McLaren SLR-engined Mercedes-Benz SLK.

This appears to be something different, with the Juke-R going up against a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, a Mercedes SLS AMG, and a Ferrari 458 Italia. Lucas Ordonez, the first GTAcademy winner from 2008 is reportedly behind the wheel of the Juke-R. We don't know the driving level of his competition, but we do know this: Nissan's little beastie is really, really quick. Check out the (admittedly grainy) video after the jump to have your horizons expanded.
Continue reading Nissan Juke-R takes on Gallardo, 458 Italia and SLS AMG in Dubai

Nissan Juke-R takes on Gallardo, 458 Italia and SLS AMG in Dubai originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 12:30:00 EST.
The Nissan Juke R is a gaggle of impressive numbers: 1,540 hours and 22 weeks of development time, 11 videos of its development, several upset bosses, 480 GT-R-derived horsepower and 428 pound-feet - and to that group we can add a 3.7-second 0-to-60 time and a top speed of 160 miles per hour. Yes, 3.7 seconds may be a second slower than the GT-R, but it's only two-tenths of a second slower than the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

Speaking of the videos, the eleventh and last in the series has been released and it's the final teaser before the real thing explodes onto the scene in Dubai. You'll find it after the jump, and when you're finished with that you can watch them all here. We've included the 10th vid after the jump as well, because who isn't interested in a track shakedown of the crossover Beelzebub uses to take his little 'bubs to soccer practice?
Continue reading Nissan Juke-R is world's quickest crossover with 3.7s 0-60 time

Nissan Juke-R is world's quickest crossover with 3.7s 0-60 time originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 14:58:00 EST.
The Nissan Juke R concept may have sought to define the high-performance compact crossover, but what happens when you don't have a million-dollar budget, Nissan UK's engineering talent and a spare GT-R lying around? You build your own. And that's what Fox Marketing is doing. Well, almost...

The crew behind some of our favorite builds has apparently taken inspiration from the Juke R and decided to make something slightly less powerful, much more affordable and on the high side of attainable. It's called the Juke S and it's set to debut later this year.

According to Fox, they'll be retaining the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder and torque vectoring all-wheel-drive system used in the standard Juke, but they plan to push the wee engine passed the 400 horsepower mark with a host of breathing mods and a massive turbo.

Other kit will include 14-inch, six piston calipers, 20x9-inch wheels, a reworked suspension, Yonaka Ronin racing seats and an exterior fitted with a custom body kit and Foxy Orange paint from BASF. If all goes according to plan, we'll be seeing it before the summer, and hopefully it will inspire Nissan to develop its own hotted-up Juke for production.
Fox Marketing developing 400-hp Nissan Juke S originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 18:31:00 EST.
Around 118,000 Nissan Juke crossovers are being recalled globally to resolve two issues. The first deals with faulty front door locks that can freeze so that the front doors can't be opened from the outside and might not close.

The second issue is to fix turbo boost-pressure sensors that can come loose, leading to erroneous readings and check-engine lights. The recall covers Juke models sold around the world including right here in North America.

Curiously, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has yet to post the recall actions on its website, but either way, if you own a Juke, you might want to ring your local Nissan dealer to see about an appointment.
Nissan Juke recalled over freezing locks and faulty sensors originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 14:30:00 EST.
The Nissan Juke R might be one of the company's most impressive engineering efforts in recent memory, but the skunkworks team behind it has apparently ruffled more than a few feathers with Nissan execs in Japan.

The UK team behind the Juke R apparently didn't seek approval from Nissan's higher-ups before beginning the build, and the unholy GT-R/Juke hybrid concept was apparently born in secret before the unending teasers - see the latest one after the jump - began making their way online.

According to sources close to the company, the release was a complete surprise to many at the automaker and several Nissan executives at the company's headquarters were put-off by the idea that <strike>a group of rag-tag engineers</strike> the team responsible for a number of Nissan projects, plus successful campaigns in WTCC, BTCC and Le Mans, would take the flagship for everything Nissan is capable of and toss it into an inexpensive compact crossover.

But like you, we think it's awesome, and we suspect when the execs get some seat time, they'll begrudgingly agree.
Continue reading Juke R might be awesome, but Nissan HQ ain't happy [w/video]

Juke R might be awesome, but Nissan HQ ain't happy [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Dec 2011 12:30:00 EST. Forty years, countless miles, a corporate name change and untold heaps of abuse separate Dave Coleman's 1971 Eyesore Racing Datsun 510 from the 2011 Nissan Juke. But that didn't stop the guys from Inside Line from pitting the two distant cousins against each other in a gravel there-and-back race over a little more than a mile. The beater 510 has plenty of rally class wins under its belt and has been prepared to tackle the worst a stage can throw at it. There's a full cage on board as well as plenty of skid plates, and everything else has been gutted in the name of weight savings.

The Juke, meanwhile, is a bonafide street-legal commuter. Where the 510 has race harnesses, the Juke has airbags, but it also has the benefit of all-wheel drive on its side. How did the two fair on the impromptu rally course? We won't ruin the surprise for you, but we will say that the show down was closer than we would have thought. Hit the jump to check out the clip for yourself.
Continue reading Nissan Juke takes to the dirt against the Eyesore Racing Datsun 510

Nissan Juke takes to the dirt against the Eyesore Racing Datsun 510 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 11:57:00 EST.
Nissan has announced that the company plans to expand its Nismo offerings in the near future with performance variations of the company's mainstream models. Until now, buyers have only been able to take home factory-tuned versions of the 370Z, but company CEO Carlos Ghosn said that the time was right to allow ordinary buyers to sample Nissan's performance DNA. What does that mean, exactly? For starters, vehicles like the Juke Nismo Concept may actually make it to market, and other models may get the go-fast treatment soon thereafter. Nissan has also made it clear that Nismo will get its own global headquarters.

The company says that the new HQ will put all of Nissan's road-race and performance expertise under one roof while giving Nismo fans a central location for fan events. The site will also sell performance products and include a heritage center with plenty of vintage race metal on hand.

We like the idea of more performance-oriented vehicles on the road so long as it doesn't translate into the dilution of the Nismo brand. The world doesn't need a Nismo CrossCabriolet. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Nissan expanding role of Nismo further into road cars

Nissan expanding role of Nismo further into road cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 29 Nov 2011 13:01:00 EST.
Sure, the idea behind the Nissan Juke-R project was to squeeze a GT-R powertrain into a Juke bodyshell. But you didn't think they'd just leave the exterior styling alone to look like a stock example of the little five-door, did you? Of course not.

In the seventh installment of the Juke-R's ongoing web-build video series, Nissan's engineers craft a unique body for the prototype out of carbon fiber. Naturally, extra consideration had to be applied to accommodate the car's unique cooling and aerodynamic considerations, as well as the beefed-up rolling stock. But there's an extra dose of attitude applied somewhere along the way.
