The handler strapped into the carbon fiber race bucket next to me is the only other person outside of yours truly who looks like he thinks this is a bad idea. I've just finished situating myself in the cabin of the very first Nissan Juke-R ever constructed. There are literally thousands of man hours in this single prototype and only four examples of the car total in the entire world. Each one carries a price tag of around $656,400 at current conversion rates, making this both the rarest and most expensive piece of machinery anyone has ever let me get close enough to sniff, let alone drive.

And that's exactly what I mean to do.

I'm not puttering around some parking lot, either. Nissan has seen fit to let me hammer this thing around a road course set up on the infield of the now defunct Nashville Superspeedway for as long as my passenger will let me, and I'm keen to oblige. I send out the familiar and threadbare "Please don't let me crash this car" one last time, and with the engine already running, I click the shifter into gear and let the Juke-R grumble its way to the pit exit.

Nissan Juke-R [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 03 May 2013 14:54:00 EST.
As long as there are sacred cows, there will be heretics sharpening their knives in anticipation of the butchering. When Nissan first carved into the mighty GT-R to create the Juke-R, onlookers quickly fell into two camps: those who thought the plan was sheer genius and those who believed cannibalizing a GT-R to feed a Juke was a new brand of obscenity. We fell firmly in the former camp. Now Severn Valley Motorsport is looking to take that theme one step further by shoving the go-faster bits from a GT-R into a Nissan Qashqai. That noise you hear? It's us cackling like mad men.

While we can't say for certain, we're guessing the project should yield the world's fastest Qashqai thanks in no small part to the twin-turbocharged VR38DETT V6 engine from the GT-R. Throw in the all-wheel-drive system and the little CUV should change demeanor dramatically. We can't wait to see this thing in action.
Nissan Qashqai getting Juke-R treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Mar 2013 09:44:00 EST.
There's something about the boffins over at Nissan - particularly those working at its racing headquarters in the UK. We're not quite sure what it is. Oh, right: they're bonkers. Absolutely off their rockers, in the best way possible. How else would you explain the decision to take an entry-level crossover and swap out its powertrain for that of a supercar?

We're talking, of course, about the Juke-R, the 480-horsepower demon cockroach from hell. After racing it against a field of supercars in Dubai, Nissan has taken the Juke-R to a decidedly different setting - an ice track near the former Winter Olympics site in Lillehammer, Norway - and set it loose.

And if that wasn't quite enough, the Japanese automaker didn't put it in the hands of an veteran ice racer - say, the four-time Formula One World Champion who drives for its sister company in the Andros Trophy, they gave it over to its gamer-turned-racer Lucas Ordonez who, being from Spain, had never driven on ice before. Sounds sane to us. Scroll on down to see the results in the brief video clip.
Continue reading Nissan Juke-R goes ice fishing in Norway

Nissan Juke-R goes ice fishing in Norway originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 May 2012 12:32:00 EST.
Now that Nissan UK is finished with the dog-and-pony promotional show for the Nissan Juke-R, it's free to do what we've all been waiting for: hand it over to The Fourth Estate for proper testing. AutoExpress was the first in line, and they didn't waste the chance, pitting Faust's CUV against the car that made it possible, the Nissan GT-R, around the Bedford Autodrome circuit.

We could tell you more, but this isn't the time for words - the long-awaited action is in the video after the jump. Still want more? There's an article to go with it over on AutoExpress.
Continue reading Showdown: Nissan Juke-R pitted against GT-R on track

Showdown: Nissan Juke-R pitted against GT-R on track originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 12:30:00 EST.
When is a Nissan Juke not a Nissan Juke? When it's the 480-horsepower, Godzilla-powered Juke-R, that's when. Then it's a supercar-beater. And to prove the point, Nissan UK took its one-off super-crossover down to Dubai for a little street racing action.

So what did Nissan pit its Juke-R against? No, not other crossovers, but a pack of the leanest, meanest supercars on the market: the Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Gallardo and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. We first saw video footage shot from the sidelines a couple of weeks ago, but since the publicity stunt proved so popular, Nissan responded by releasing an official, high-quality version, complete with in-car footage and plenty of tire squealing. Follow the jump to check it out.
Continue reading Nissan releases official footage of Juke-R supercar street race in Dubai

Nissan releases official footage of Juke-R supercar street race in Dubai originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Jan 2012 12:32:00 EST.
The Nissan Juke R is a gaggle of impressive numbers: 1,540 hours and 22 weeks of development time, 11 videos of its development, several upset bosses, 480 GT-R-derived horsepower and 428 pound-feet - and to that group we can add a 3.7-second 0-to-60 time and a top speed of 160 miles per hour. Yes, 3.7 seconds may be a second slower than the GT-R, but it's only two-tenths of a second slower than the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

Speaking of the videos, the eleventh and last in the series has been released and it's the final teaser before the real thing explodes onto the scene in Dubai. You'll find it after the jump, and when you're finished with that you can watch them all here.
The Nissan Juke R concept may have sought to define the high-performance compact crossover, but what happens when you don't have a million-dollar budget, Nissan UK's engineering talent and a spare GT-R lying around? You build your own. And that's what Fox Marketing is doing. Well, almost...

The crew behind some of our favorite builds has apparently taken inspiration from the Juke R and decided to make something slightly less powerful, much more affordable and on the high side of attainable. It's called the Juke S and it's set to debut later this year.

According to Fox, they'll be retaining the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder and torque vectoring all-wheel-drive system used in the standard Juke, but they plan to push the wee engine passed the 400 horsepower mark with a host of breathing mods and a massive turbo.

Other kit will include 14-inch, six piston calipers, 20x9-inch wheels, a reworked suspension, Yonaka Ronin racing seats and an exterior fitted with a custom body kit and Foxy Orange paint from BASF. If all goes according to plan, we'll be seeing it before the summer, and hopefully it will inspire Nissan to develop its own hotted-up Juke for production.
Fox Marketing developing 400-hp Nissan Juke S originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 18:31:00 EST. The end of the Nissan Juke-R build has come and gone. The vehicle is done. Only a lucky few were there when the 485-horsepower twin-turbo V6 borrowed from a Nissan GT-R cleared its throat for the first time. The thrills and high-fives, that wave of adrenaline that buoys dog-tired men, and the long minutes of standing around and grinning at your project as it burbles away is a private moment that only the builders can fully appreciate.

Respecting the space of the Juke-R build team doesn't mean we don't want to examine this evil little mutant closely. Nissan UK knows this, and has thrown us all a bone with 11 new pictures and three videos of the Juke-R, one with audio of the revving engine. The ultimate payoff will be the figures from performance testing, which we expect to see soon.

Using an online performance-stat calculator, we first plugged the stats of a normal Juke, deciding to go with the heaviest curb weight of 3,200 lbs, and the numbers it spat back, 7.6 seconds from zero to 60 mph and a 15.93-second quarter mile, dovetail pretty well with what car magazines have gotten, though the glossy print guys are a bit faster.

Taking that same 3,200 lb weight (though we don't know whether the Juke-R is lighter or heavier than a standard Juke) and going for 485 hp returns a predicted 3.6 second 0-60 run and a quarter mile that gets scorched in 11.44 seconds with a 124 mph trap speed. We could live with that. We've added the new images to our gallery, and you can check out the videos posted after the jump.
Continue reading Nissan Juke-R clears its throat for the first time

Nissan Juke-R clears its throat for the first time originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 19 Nov 2011 19:59:00 EST.
Sure, the idea behind the Nissan Juke-R project was to squeeze a GT-R powertrain into a Juke bodyshell. But you didn't think they'd just leave the exterior styling alone to look like a stock example of the little five-door, did you? Of course not.

In the seventh installment of the Juke-R's ongoing web-build video series, Nissan's engineers craft a unique body for the prototype out of carbon fiber. Naturally, extra consideration had to be applied to accommodate the car's unique cooling and aerodynamic considerations, as well as the beefed-up rolling stock. But there's an extra dose of attitude applied somewhere along the way.

The crack team of engineers that Nissan put to task on building the Juke-R prototype worked hard on their assignment, and have taken us along every step of the way.

Fitting the mechanical bits from a GT-R into the tiny Juke crossover, it turns out, has been no easy task. So with the engine and drivetrain in place, it's time to start re-fitting the interior.

Sounds simple enough, right? Well, with the engine pushed that far back into what was the Juke's cabin, the boffins had to rethink everything, and make sure the controls were within easy reach for the lucky son of a gun (or poor soul) who'd be driving this beast. Follow the jump to see how they managed, and scope out the updated gallery of high-res still images.
Continue reading Nissan Juke-R web build soldiers on with interior fittings

Nissan Juke-R web build soldiers on with interior fittings originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 Nov 2011 09:59:00 EST.
Most all-wheel-drive vehicles - say, a mass-market crossover like the Nissan Juke, for example - are fairly straightforward in their setup. With the engine and transmission up front, one driveshaft goes to the front wheels and another to the back. But that's not always the case with high-performance machines.

On the Nissan GT-R, for example, the engine is in the front and the gearbox is in the back. So a driveshaft goes aft from the engine to the transmission and the rear wheels, and another goes back to the front wheels where the power came from.

That's all well and good when you're designing a car from scratch to accommodate such a layout. But when it came to replacing the mechanical bits from the Juke with those of the GT-R, Nissan's team of crack engineers found there another challenge. (Not to mention the fact that the Juke's wheelbase is nearly a foot shorter than the GT-R's.) Follow the jump for the fifth (brief) episode in the Juke-R build series to see how they've managed.
Continue reading Nissan highlights unique challenges of Juke-R's drivetrain

Nissan highlights unique challenges of Juke-R's drivetrain originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 14:30:00 EST.
You don't simply shoehorn in a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 where a 1.6-liter inline-four used to be. It takes a lot of reconfiguring, as the team at Nissan found in building the segment-busting Juke-R.

Not only did they have to fit in a bigger engine - removing the bulkhead altogether and building a new one around it - but they had to make room for all the cooling systems necessary to keep it running optimally. That means more air openings than a stock Juke fits in between its bug-eyes. And that's before making room for the GT-R's all-wheel-drive system and dual-clutch transmission.

The unveiling of the Nissan Juke-R prototype has been as slow and painstaking as the car's actual build. First we received initial details, a rendering and video of the project under way. Over the course of the following few weeks, Nissan continued keeping us on our toes with a series of videos showing the project coming together. Now that the vehicle has finally reached completion, the Japanese automaker has released a solitary image of the finished product.

Those unfamiliar ought to be impressed: Nissan took the drivetrain from its top-of-the-line GT-R - including its advanced all-wheel-drive system, twin-clutch transmission and 3.8-liter twin-turbo 480-horsepower V6 - and shoehorned it into one of its smallest vehicles, the Juke crossover. Of course, it wasn't as simple as all that, as the Juke had to be completely gutted down to its frame and rebuilt from the ground up to accommodate an engine more than twice the size of what it was designed for.

In the end, Nissan will build two of these prototypes: one in right-hand drive (for its own roads back in Japan and those where it was built in England) and one in left-hand drive (for the rest of the civilized world). The release of this solitary photo follows a surprise unveiling in front of members of the press at a demo event in Spain.
Continue reading Nissan releases first photo of completed Juke-R

Nissan releases first photo of completed Juke-R originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 09:58:00 EST.
Work is coming along nicely on the Nissan Juke-R. The automaker has released another video in its series of build clips, and fabricators have begun tweaking the Juke chassis to accept all the drive line, suspension and brake components from the mighty GT-R. This just goes to further enforce one of the great laws of modification: there's nothing a plasma cutter can't fix. The newest video also details the kind of cage work that has gone into making sure the high-horsepower Juke-R can keep its occupants safe in the event of a catastrophic collision.

You know, the kind of collision that happens when you plop 530 horsepower into a short-wheelbase crossover. Speaking of engines, Nissan says that putting the monster turbocharged V6 into the Juke engine bay is the next step in the process. Hit the jump to see the video for yourself.
Continue reading Nissan releases third installment of Juke-R web build

Nissan releases third installment of Juke-R web build originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Oct 2011 16:56:00 EST.
When Nissan UK announced that the company planned to build a design study using the body of a Juke and the running gear of GT-R, we knew the automaker's engineers had some serious work cut out for them. Now Nissan is giving the world a glimpse into exactly what it will take to bring the Juke-R to life with a series of build videos. The company isn't simply cramming a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 into the CUV and calling it a day. Instead, a donor GT-R will lend its full all-wheel-drive system and all of the tech necessary to keep the car planted on the road to the effort.

Nissan has already started by shortening the wheelbase of a standard GT-R to Juke dimensions (see above) to ensure that everything will still work once workers begin swapping floor pans. The whole project looks deliciously maniacal. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Continue reading Nissan Juke-R web build continues

Nissan Juke-R web build continues originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 16:28:00 EST.
It's hard not to love Nissan right now. The company has shown more testicular fortitude over the past 12 months than nearly every other mainstream automaker combined with additions like the Murano Crosscabriolet and the Nissan Juke. You may not love either vehicle's bizarre styling, and you may have trouble slotting them into a comfortable market segment, but both show a determination to shirk a formulaic approach to product development. Now Nissan is diving even deeper into the crazy pool with a 520-horsepower version of the Juke. Meet the Juke-R.

Nissan Engineers have taken to wedging the twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 from the Nissan GT-R behind the frog-eye headlights of the Juke. The rest of the supercar's drivetrain comes along for the ride too, including the vehicle's fantastic all-wheel drive system. The Juke-R will even rock the same 20-inch Rays forged wheels as the biggest of its brothers.

Unfortunately, the Juke-R isn't headed for production. The vehicle is a one-off, street-legal concept car worked up by RML and the Nissan Technology Center for Europe. Hit the jump for the full press release as well as a video of the machine.
Continue reading 520-hp Nissan Juke-R takes shape [w/video]

520-hp Nissan Juke-R takes shape [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 09:57:00 EST.
