Nissan's on-again, off-again MX-5 Miata rival is... on again, at least according to the blokes at Auto Express. What form a potential two-door sporty coupe from Nissan may take - if it happens at all - is still widely debatable; it could be as simple as a cut-down Sentra or as crazy as a sporty take on the all-electric Leaf.

Did that last little tidbit catch you off guard? Remember that Nissan showed off just such a machine in the form of the Esflow Concept at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, though we wouldn't expect any potential production model to share much with that highly conceptual design.

In any case, Auto Express seems to think this sporty 2+2 may ride on a midsize platform sourced from Mercedes-Benz (the two automakers signed a partnership in 2010) that would be shared with whatever replaces the 370Z (along with its Infiniti G Coupe) and even the next-generation GT-R.

Another bit of wackiness? AE says Nissan is considering turning to the experts at Lotus for help in tuning the chassis for added sportiness. We suppose all of this is possible, but for now, we're taking it with the largest grain of salt we can get our hands on.
Nissan's MX-5 Miata rival back in the plans? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 09:28:00 EST. Another player comes from Korea in the form of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which is set to do battle with the Mustang until the other Japanese players show up (assuming they make it to the U.S. market). We expect both the Toyota and the Nissan to use four cylinder engines, with manual transmissions sending power to the rear wheels. Reports indicate that the Nissan may use a turbocharged 1.6-liter unit putting out somewhere north of 200-horsepower, but less than 250. That would leave the 370Z to do battle at a slightly higher performance plateau and should allow Nissan to keep the price comparatively low, though we believe that both Nissan coupes could be based on the same platform. We should know more soon enough, as previous reports peg the new FR coupe to debut sometime in 2010. There's one more rendering after the break.

[Source: 7Tune.com]
Continue reading More renders from Japan of the Nissan FR coupe

More renders from Japan of the Nissan FR coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 10:56:00 EST. This rear-wheel-drive coupe would compete against the upcoming Toyota/Subaru sports coupe, which also are also to be driven by the rear wheels. What we haven't expected, though, is an Infiniti version of this 240SX revival. According to rumors, the Nissan version would get a small displacement four-banger while its big brother from Infiniti would get a V6 displacing 2.5 liters.

Inside Line reports that this new entry-level Infiniti will be displayed at an as yet unnamed auto show sometime within the next year. Color us awfully excited at the prospect of RWD coupes from the likes of Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai and now Infiniti, all of which are set for the American market. Affordable performance never goes out of style, even when gas prices are this high.

[Source: Inside Line]
Infiniti to get entry-level coupe based on Z originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jun 2008 12:27:00 EST. Brenda Priddy pulled out her good lens and took a few shots of a heavily camouflaged Nissan Altima Coupe.

To refresh, according to Auto Express magazine, the coupe will be shared with Renault which will call it the Laguna Coupe. It's expected to be powered by the same 3.5-liter V6 as the Altima with around 260 hp. That should give the Laguna a 0-60 mph time of less than seven seconds and a top speed around at least 140 mph. An automatic gearbox is expected to be the most popular choice in shifters. Prices on the Laguna Coupé are being pegged at around £25,000 ($47,400) when it reaches showrooms next year.

[Source: The Car Connection, Auto Express]
Spy Shots: Nissan Altima coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Nov 2006 12:57:00 EST.
