"The watch industry is a very interesting parallel in that none of us need watches anymore," Jonathon Ward, founder of Icon 4x4, offers as a metaphor for his latest project. "The secret to them succeeding and prospering and furthering their design efforts in the modern market is in the execution - making the execution distinct and purposeful and bespoke. We are trying to take that unnecessary ethic from other industries and evolve it into niche transportation."

In other words, Ward knows that his custom creations are superfluous, but like timepieces, people appreciate them for more than just their practical use. We count ourselves in that group, as we've previously sampled the Icon CJ3B and found it to be more than the sum of its parts.

The company's latest project is the Icon Bronco. After completing the development of the FJ series and the aforementioned CJ3B, Ward has turned his unique perspective to Ford's legendary off-roader from the 1960s and 70s. Icon will officially debut this Bronco at SEMA in Las Vegas later this week, but when Ward called us up earlier this month and asked if we wanted a sneak preview, we jumped at the chance. With the Bronco needing to maintain its like-new condition for the show, however, we would be limited to a short jaunt around the city streets of his facility in Van Nuys, CA. That would have to do, though, as we were eager to see what sort of unique details and materials Ward's team has implemented into the Bronco's design.

Icon Bronco originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 31 Oct 2011 11:57:00 EST. Black Friday. 7:00 AM. The mall. That was the mission for one Jeff Glucker, Autoblog team member and the person you have to thank for your chance to win a very, very limited pair of Nike Dunk 6.0 DeLorean shoes. Only 1,000 were made and they're completely sold out, so there are just two ways left to get yourself a pair: pay up to seven times their $90 retail price for a set on eBay, or enter Autoblog's giveaway to win these kicks that Jeff waited in line to buy just for you.

Couple things to mention before we tell you how to enter. One, these are size 9s. Sorry we couldn't take requests for sizes, but that's the way it goes for such a limited edition item. Two, the unbelievably cool gullwing shoebox is unfortunately not included. Those were special boxes made only for promotional purposes and not included when buying the shoes at retail.

So, entering is ultra simple. Just "Like" the Autoblog Facebook page, then check our Facebook page in a few minutes for the Wall post titled "Leave a Facebook comment, win a pair of Nike DeLorean shoes!" (It's live, click here!). Leave a comment on this Wall post to enter the giveaway. That's it. Feel free to "Like" the post itself so your Facebook friends can see the giveaway, and remember to allow direct messages in your Facebook privacy settings.
DeLorean Motor Company recently teamed up with Nike, to bring us a limited-edition sneaker modeled after the iconic, gullwing DMC-12. The Nike Dunk 6.0 DeLorean was limited to just 1,000 pairs and they sold out as soon as stores flipped the sign from CLOSED to OPEN. If you're a fan of the DMC brand but were unable to snag a pair of kicks, don't fret, because the Texas-based automaker reportedly has big plans to expand its brands.

According to Forbes, the DeLorean team is partnering up with companies like Mattel, Microsoft and Now & Zen. This means a line of DMC-branded toys, clothing and ... WinAmp skins? We're not quite sure what DeLorean and Microsoft are working on, but if the DMC brand stays hot, then the two could produce DeLorean-themed computer mice and they'd sell like hotcakes. Wait... we'd actually buy one of those. Quick, someone call RoadMice.

We internet types don't always condone the idea of waking up at the crack of dawn on Black Friday for some mad-dash holiday shopping, but if there was ever a product we'd wait in line for, this might just be it. Starting this Friday, November 26, Nike will be selling its brand-new Dunk 6.0 DeLorean shoe, modeled after what is perhaps the most iconic movie car of all time, the DMC-12 from Back to the Future.

Our favorite stainless-steel sports car has been reinterpreted in the form of this seriously sweet pair of kicks, featuring a matte silver, no-sew constructed upper body. The shoe's sole mimics the DMC-12's 80's-tastic taillights, and there's even a Belfast stamp on the tongue, giving a hat tip to the Irish factory where John Z's machines were originally produced. It even comes in a gullwing-inspired box.

No official details have been released as to how many pairs of these special shoes will be produced or what they will cost, though a few online sources have cited that 1,000 pairs will be available worldwide. Knowing our luck, these hot kicks will surely sell out faster than you can shout, "Eighty-eight miles an hour!"

Nike Hyperdunk Kobe Bryant Aston Martin Edition - Click above for image gallery

You may recall back in '08 when Kobe Bryant went viral for Nike with his jump over an Aston Martin that appeared to drive right at him. As you also know by now, it was just an optical illusion; Kobe was next to the car and not in front of it. The stunt was part of the marketing campaign for the Nike Hyperdunk basketball shoes Kobe endorses.

For some reason, Nike apparently thinks people still care enough - around two years later, no less - to shell out $700 for limited-run Hyperdunk Kobe Bryant Aston Martin Edition sneakers via retailer OSneaker.com. Nike's production run will accommodate just 500 <strike>suckers</strike> collectors. Act now. Or better yet, don't. Top tip, Derek!

Gallery: Nike Hyperdunk Kobe Bryant Aston Martin Edition

[Source: OSneaker.com]
Continue reading Everybody Run: Nike Hyperdunks for Aston Martin and Kobe Bryant

Everybody Run: Nike Hyperdunks for Aston Martin and Kobe Bryant originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 27 Feb 2010 18:05:00 EST. So when SparkFun's Nate decided he finally needed to get rid of the last key in his pocket, he took it upon himself to create a DIY solution.

Using an iPod dongle, a Nike+ shoe sensor, an Arduino Pro Mini (an open-source circuit board/software combo for electronic tinkerers), and far too many hours in the basement, he was able to create a key fob (or iFob, as Nate calls it) to unlock the doors on his Mazda3. Reading over his tutorial, the process isn't too complex, but it's not for the faint of heart, either. The only thing left for Nate to do is nix the ignition key entirely, so the next step is to install a push-button starter.

[Source: SparkFun via Engadget]
Nike+ hacked to create automotive keyless entry device originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 06 Jun 2009 13:35:00 EST.
Click on either image to view more of the GT3 RS-inspired Nike sneakers

Remember the 80's? Frankly, we'd rather not, what with all the neon colors and fifth-grader graphics. But some people just won't leave it alone. Like sneaker freaks, who need to have those Nike high-tops they had (or didn't) as a child. Or Porsche, with their obscenely bright-colored 911 GT3 RS. The two may seem at diametrically opposite ends of the spectrum, but it was only a matter of time before someone brought them together.

That someone is Purchaze, a German retro clothing company. Upon opening its newest location in Holland, a nearby Porsche dealership hooked them up with a Cayman S for promotional purposes. (We would have figured some neon-colored slant-nose would have served better, but what do we know.) As a thanks for the loan, Purchaze whipped up the series of sneakers you see above. Inspired, supposedly, by the GT3, each pair of kicks features the Porsche badge on the tongue and are colored in the shades of the GT3 palette: one pair in orange, one in green, another in black and a fourth in silver. The sneakers were presented to the team at the Porsche dealership, who are <strike>wishing they had irregularly-sized feet</strike> to use wear them in the pits at an upcoming race. If you want to get your hands on a pair of these, <strike>you may have less taste than boiled chicken</strike> you can't, because they were made exclusively for the dealership, but Adidas offers a line of Porsche Design shoes that may not, you know, be a cause of embarrassment when worn in public.

Gallery: Nike sneakers inspired by Porsche GT3 RS

[Source: High Snobiety via Jalopnik]
Nike outlet puts the "RS" in "sneakers" originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Dec 2008 18:01:00 EST. The McFlys are Back to the Future-themed basketball shoes, with a color scheme inspired by the shoes Michael J. Fox wore in Back to the Future II. They come complete with "2015" emblazoned on the right shoe's tongue, while the left one features the BTTF arrow logos. Kobe showed up at the completely-mobbed event in -- what else -- a DeLorean done up just like Doc Brown's movie car. The perennial All-Star posed for pics and signed shoes for the first 10 fans lucky enough to score a pair. Lest you think a special-edition sneaker launch like this is no big thing, know that there were people lined up outside the joint for as long as 24 hours.
