With the days winding down until the opening of the 2009 New York Auto Show, Subaru has released the full details along with photographs of its highly anticipated new Legacy, which replaces the outgoing model for the 2010 model year. The new Legacy has big shoes to fill, as the outgoing model offered a compelling package with a sleek design and capable chassis.

The exterior design of the new model bridges the gap between Subie's aging flagship model and the concept car the Japanese automaker revealed in Detroit. The new Legacy also grows an inch longer, and about three inches in each the wheelbase, width and height, in order to offer a more commodious cabin.

Three engines will be available: A naturally-aspirated four, a revised turbocharged flat-four and the flat-six. The 2.5-liter normally aspirated engine produces 170 horsepower and equal torques, and the fla-six swells from 3.0- to 3.6 liters, now producing 256 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. But the big news is the revised turbo boxer in between, producing 22 more horses than the outgoing model (now 265 hp) and 17 lb-ft more torque (for a total of 258) from lower revs. Of course, all the engines will offer all-wheel drive (otherwise it'd hardly be a Subaru), but the six-speed manual (fresh to the North American market) and five-speed automatic are joined by a new CVT to keep any of the engines in their sweet spot.

The interior has likewise been thoroughly revised, incorporating a new voice-command sat-nav and slick ambient lighting. All of this amounts to a modest 50 pound increase in weight, which seems like a small penalty to pay for all the added features.

We'll be sure to check it out and report back live from the Javitz Center show floor next week. In the meantime, load up on info with the press release after the jump and the high-resolution image gallery below.

Gallery: 2010 Subaru Legacy

[Source: Subaru]
Continue reading New York Preview: 2010 Subaru Legacy revealed ahead of Big Apple debut

New York Preview: 2010 Subaru Legacy revealed ahead of Big Apple debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Mar 2009 11:29:00 EST.
Click above to enlarge the teaser shot of the Subaru Legacy Concept

Looks like Volvo's not the only automaker teasing the next-gen version of its midsize sedan in Detroit next month. The Subaru Legacy Concept celebrates the model's 20th anniversary and forecasts the styling we should probably expect to see when the current model heads to the retirement home. Hence, those stacked headlights and the new, chunkier-looking grille design are things we should all probably start getting used to. As for those muscular fender flares and the aggressive lower fascia, well, we'll cross our fingers. Consider our interest piqued. Plenty more to come when we get to Detroit. Now, if only they'd bring back that Legacy Wagon, too....

[Source: Subaru]
Detroit '09 Preview: Subaru Legacy Concept to make Motown debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 00:35:00 EST. New front and rear fascias distinguish the '07 Legacy from its predecessor and dramatically change the car's appearance. The nose section is all-new, featuring new, more sculpted headlamps, a pronounced "V" crossbar in the grille, and very racy-looking front spoilers (on the 3.0R Spec.B cars). Moving aft, both the sedan and wagon get a chrome dress-up strip that runs the width of the car. The Spec.B wagon also gets roof-mounted rear spoiler. The new Outback gets different grille

Cars fitted with the 3.0L 245 PS six-cylinder boxer get SI-Drive as standard. The SI-Drive system allows the driver to dial up three different drive modes: Intelligent, Sport, and Sport Sharp. Intelligent Mode is set up to maximize fuel economy, while Sport and Sport Sharp put a premium on responsiveness and performance. Also on the '07 models, 3.0L cars with automatic trannys receive wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Inside, Subaru has upgraded the quality of the materials used, added a new center console, and even placed ambient lighting in the cupholders on some models. Dual-zone climate control is now standard, and on the Outback, the cargo area's floor covering is reversible, with carpeting on one side and a waterproof surface on the other.

Complete details and pricing info (UK) can be found in the press release after the jump. Now all we need to do is sit and wait patiently for the gussied-up Legacy to land in North America.

(Additional photos, press release after the jump)

[Source: Subaru]
Continue reading European Subaru Legacy gets a refresh

European Subaru Legacy gets a refresh originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Sep 2006 12:54:00 EST.
