CLP Motorsports puts NEXBTL renewable diesel – and Tanner Foust – in its Superlite Coupe for a 2,500-mile drive on one tank of fuel.
Over in the Netherlands, Neste Oil has celebrated the opening of Europe's largest renewable diesel facility. Located in Rotterdam, Neste Oil's new site boasts an annual production capacity of 800,000 tons of the firm's NExBTL renewable diesel fuel. NExBTL technology allows Neste to use a wide variety of oils, greases and fats as feedstock to make the fuel.
When the World Rally Championship rolled into Finland at the end of July for the 2011 Neste Oil Rally Finland, some 29 of the 124 vehicles entered in the tail-out, gravel-throwing event were fueled by Neste Oil's NExBTL renewable diesel. Running solely on Neste Green 100 diesel, Neste says the vehicles' greenhouse gas emissions were cut in half during the three-day event. Jarmo Mahonen, managing director of AKK Sports Oy, said:
On April 27th, Peugeot's radically styled EX1 electric ripped 'round the famed Nürburgring, setting a record for battery-powered vehicles with a time of 9 minutes 1.338 seconds. Come late June, a duo of vehicles – powered by Neste Oil's NExBTL renewable diesel fuel – will take to the 'Ring, marking the first time that NExBTL will be tested under extreme competition conditions.
Neste Oil has announced plans to build a new biomass-to-liquid diesel plant in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The plant will produce what the company calls NExBTL renewable diesel fuel at the rate of 800,000 tonnes per year after it begins operating in 2011. Neste will spend about €670 million (a little over $1 billion at current exchange rates) on the facility which will use Neste's processes to convert a mix of palm and rapeseed oils and animal fat into a high-quality diesel fuel.
