We first heard about the game and its availability on both Xbox One and Playstation 4 some weeks ago, and the Hollywood media machine has pumped out plenty of news regarding the upcoming Need For Speed movie, as well. Hell, we even got a detailed look at the NFS version of the Shelby GT500 a few days ago. To the respective PR departments of Electronic Arts and Dreamworks Studios, we salute you.

Of course, as racing-gamers, we were most excited to sample Rivals for the first time here in Los Angeles. Electronic Arts was kind enough to give us a short walkthrough and backgrounder about the game, before turning us loose on the pre-alpha version of the software.

Need For Speed Rivals lives in the same basic universe as its forbearers - street racers, cops, loads of cars and ultra fast-paced action - but for the first time ever offers two separate-but-related playing modes. Gamers can choose to drive as street racers, running from the police, or as the police themselves, hunting down the law-breaking racers. Both sides have "weapons" of a sort to aid in their capturing/running causes, including EMP-firing guns, spike strips, turbo boosts and more. The guys from Ghost Games, the studio-within-a-studio inside of EA, told us that there will be lots more weapons to choose from and upgrade when the game is finished.
Continue reading E3: We play Need For Speed Rivals, chase street racers [w/videos]

E3: We play Need For Speed Rivals, chase street racers [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Jun 2013 16:57:00 EST.
Dreamworks Studios, Electronic Arts and Ford Motor Company announced today that the Ford Mustang will play the lead hero car role in the upcoming Need for Speed movie, slated to hit theaters next February. Of course, the Mustang didn't audition for the role like we imagine the film's star, Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame, might have. Rather, Ford and Dreamworks struck a partnership deal that meant the Mustang could skip the casting couch. The deal will also see the film's universe populated with other Ford products (gratuitously so, we're guessing), and the automaker will also help the studio promote the video-game-turned-movie next year.

The hero car in question is a special one-off Mustang created by Ford that is making its debut at the E3 video game trade show as we speak. Powered by a supercharged V8 and apparently based on the Shelby GT500, the car's been modified with a widebody kit, 22-inch wheels, larger air intakes and twin hood nostrils. Ford also provided the film's production with an F-450 truck that will be called "The Beast" in the film's story, and a second Mustang to be used during filming as a camera car.

The Mustang's movie career is really taking off, with news of its Need For Speed casting closely following last week's release of the trailer for Getaway, a movie coming out in August that stars Ethan Hawke, Selena Gomez and another Shelby GT500. In addition to Aaron Paul and a modified Mustang, the Need For Speed movie also stars Michael Keaton (cop, we're guessing) and Dominic Cooper (villain, we're guessing), and is directed by Scott Waugh, who directed the Navy SEAL film Act of Valor in 2012. Check out a making-of featurette video below.
Continue reading Need for Speed movie casts Mustang in hero car role [w/video]

Need for Speed movie casts Mustang in hero car role [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Jun 2013 17:59:00 EST.
Fresh from critical praise for the last installment in the series, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Electronic Arts has formally announced that Need For Speed Rivals will be the next title in the series. Set to hit stores on November 19, the game will also be the first Need For Speed to be available on next-generation consoles Xbox One and Playstation 4, as well as the current Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

The "rivals" in question for this NFS title are, of course, cops and street racers - nothing new there - but the gameplay is apparently getting a makeover. Players may choose to be racers, and live the life of evading cops, gaining infamy, videoing their slipperiest moves and earning Speed Points. They might also choose to play on the side of law enforcement; attaining higher ranks and faster police cars with more and increasingly challenging busts.

One big innovation in Rivals will be the use of a new play system called AllDrive. The concept is that a player can seamlessly move from playing in single player mode, to playing online with friends, without having to wait in a lobby or move through a menu interface. The game will merge one's play from single to multiplayer as your friends across the web go on and offline, and you can choose to interact with them or not, as you like.

One more item of note: Ferrari will be making its return to the NFS world in Rivals. The following press release mentions that the game has booked Ferrari for this new title, specifically calling out the F12 Berlinetta as being invited to the party. Continue on below for the official press release, as well as a short video teaser of the new game.
Continue reading Need For Speed Rivals announced for Xbox One and Playstation 4 [w/video]

Need For Speed Rivals announced for Xbox One and Playstation 4 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 May 2013 16:58:00 EST.
Need For Speed is one of the longest-running and most popular franchises in the history of arcade-style racing titles - actually, you can ditch the qualifier, it's simply one of the biggest automotive video games, period. So, when the newest iteration of the game, Need For Speed: Most Wanted was announced, we knew immediately that we'd have to give it a run.

The new game arrives in the wake of critical praise for Forza Horizon, a challenger for racing-gamer dollars that shares quite a lot with Most Wanted. Both games offer open-world, sandbox-style driving environments for players to explore, both boast a seriously good-looking selection of vehicles, and both offer the ability to casually top 200 miles per hour while looking for stuff to crash into and/or jump over. In other words: The emphasis in both games is on driving fun, rather than a true-to-life racing experience.

Of course, Most Wanted is far more "arcade" in its style of gameplay than even the newly released Forza title. While the team at Criterion has actually done a rather nice job with the driving physics that power this new Need For Speed - steering, braking, acceleration and the like all feel nicely sorted (if not as realistic as can be found in Gran Turismo, for instance), the best parts of the experience all involve crazily acrobatic maneuvers, and reality-defying racing.
Continue reading Review: Need For Speed: Most Wanted [w/video]

Review: Need For Speed: Most Wanted [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Nov 2012 14:58:00 EST.
It would seem Turn 10 has outdone the Need For Speed franchise on it's own turf with Forza: Horizon with one glaring exception. No matter where you turn or what sort of mayhem you unleash on the countryside, there is no law enforcement. Fortunately, EA Games is ready to serve up the newest foray into the Need For Speed universe with NFS: Most Wanted. As you might suspect, the gameplay focuses on illegal street racing and the law's attempts at maintaining order. EA Games has turned out the first ad for the title, and if the game play is as entertaining as the clip below, we'll want a turn at the controller.
The add pits an array of would-be lawbreakers against the boys in blue in a little real-life showdown, but it takes one hooligan in a Ford Focus ST to get the party started.
Criterion Games bills the open-world hooning and hooliganism in the single-player mode of Need for Speed: Most Wanted as "unprecedented freedom and power." The company might not be kidding. Every single car in the game is available whenever you want it and you can drive anywhere you wish.

There are races and police chases through industrial playgrounds and suburban byways. There are "Speed points" awarded for all kinds of sociopathic behavior, and your car can be upgraded instantly with things like automatically reinflating tires and a reinforced chassis. There's lots of jumping. And we mean, lots.

And there's a Big Brother called Autolog 2.0 that keeps track of everyone doing anything, so that the best among you make the Most Wanted list. It's about as arcade as you're going to get without a stack of quarters, a Snickers and a 64-ounce soda. You can watch Criterion demonstrate it for you in the video below.
Continue reading Criterion gives tour of Need for Speed: Most Wanted game's open world

Criterion gives tour of Need for Speed: Most Wanted game's open world originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 23 Sep 2012 20:00:00 EST. The gents at Rocket Jump, four zany "people willing to stand on that razor's edge of the envelope that gets pushed outside the box," are kind of neighbors with Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory. Sensing an opportunity to do something zany together, and apparently having a lot of cardboard and Elmer's glue to get rid of, someone thought of recreating Need for Speed: Most Wanted police chase through a cardboard Fairhaven City.

There's a bank robbery and a high-speed chase and a couple of crashes, and the bad guys get away - but not before a lot of cardboard, and one kart, go flying.
Here we have the second interesting tidbit about the Need for Speed movie recently fast-tracked by Dreamworks studios, after finding out it would be helmed by stuntman and Act of Valor co-director Scott Waugh: it's slated for a February 7, 2014 release.

Hollywood generally reserves that month for dramas, so action films released then don't face a lot of competition within the genre. None of the Fast & Furious movies were released in February, and if you're wondering, the sixth film in that franchise is due Memorial Day weekend, 2013.

Dreamworks wants to give Need for Speed a chance to get its own air, but the studio's February-release track record is pretty bad, with bombs like I am Number Four, Euro Trip, and Norbit. (A notable exception? Old School.) NFS director Waugh probably likes February, though. After all, Act of Valor was released that month, and it's the film that got him the job.
Need For Speed movie hits theaters Feb 7, 2014 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 14 Jul 2012 18:03:00 EST.
It's official: Need for Speed is going to be a movie, and it's been "fast-tracked" to arrive in theaters in 2014. Paramount-owned Dreamworks had been talking to Electronic Arts about a cinematic treatment of the video game franchise, and the two were able to close a deal. The script is ready, penned by George Gatin, the brother of Real Steel screenwriter John Gatin.

The movie is based on the entire NFS franchise, not one particular series. So what can you expect? According to the love-fest press release, you'll get "a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the 70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise," which makes it sound like there'll be Lamborghinis, Nobles and Shelbys driven by middle-aged dudes with mustaches and huge sunglasses, and at least one afro.

A more accurate synopsis might be from a commenter at Joystiq, who wrote, "It's going to have the live-action sex doll disguised as a female cop, the snarky white guy who is the fashionabl[e] anti-hero, the token black sidekick and the bad guy who has no idea he's going to become a good guy. Oh, and hip-hop music, hip-hop music everywhere."

A potential saving grace is that it's being directed by Scott Waugh, who is just off doing the restrained and very dramatic Special Ops flick Act of Valor. A definite saving grace is that EA is letting fans suggest cars for the film cars on EA's Facebook page. Scroll down for a press release on the big-screen NFS coming your way.
Continue reading Dreamworks will make Need for Speed film

Dreamworks will make Need for Speed film originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 09:58:00 EST.
Dreamworks was founded by three Hollywood titans as an independent studio with the aim of making good, and profitable, movies. That didn't happen. Now the Paramount-owned Dreamworks just wants to make money the Hollywood way: opportunistic copying. It is in talks with Electronic Arts to make a Need for Speed movie, perhaps because it wants its own Fast & Furious franchise, certainly because it is bankrupt of ideas. In either case, Dreamworks is not alone.

Word was that a deal should have been done already, but nothing has been announced. That deal is said to already have a script for the film written by George Gatins, whose borther wrote Real Steel. If the deal doesn't come off as planned, it's been said that other studios are waiting in line to chat with EA about the same thing.

If you want to a glimpse of a Hollywood vision of Need for Speed, Michael Bay did the trailer for Need for Speed: The Run last year. To extrapolate the movie, imagine that trailer being fifty times longer, fewer sound effects lifted from Transformers, actors who look like their in-game counterparts but can't act nearly as well, and explosions. And even more hot women. Scroll down for the vid.
Continue reading Need For Speed video game to become a movie?
Video games are big business. Titles like Call of Duty can reach a billion dollars or more in sales, but racing games typically don't fare quite as well. Maybe that's why the Need For Speed team developed The Run; a cross-country thriller that combines fast cars, beautiful-yet-pixelated women (with real-life swimsuit model voices and Christina Hendricks) and abundant out-of-the-car action.

To show just how serious Electronic Arts is about Need for Speed: The Run, the franchise went to box-office ATM machine Michael Bay to cut the game trailer. Bay may not make the most critically acclaimed movies of all time, but they make serious bank, and he knows how to whip up the pre-release excitement with killer trailers.

Hit the jump to watch the action-packed trailer he cut together for The Run, then stay for a second video that gives a behind the scenes look at how Bay and his team assembled the teaser.
Continue reading Michael Bay takes a whack at Need For Speed: The Run trailer

Michael Bay takes a whack at Need For Speed: The Run trailer originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 05 Nov 2011 18:02:00 EST.
Electronic Arts seems hell bent on capitalizing on its unique deal with Porsche, announcing a new contest to win a 2012 911 Carrera S as part of a promotion for its upcoming Need For Speed: The Run video game. Apparently, all you need to do to be entered into the giveaway is log into your EA account or register a new account for free. No actual purchase of the game is necessary.

Naturally, there's some fine print - the contest is only open to people living in the United States, Canada or the UK, for instance. We know there are some angry (and very vocal) fans of the Forza series out there holding a Porsche-shaped grudge against EA, but we're guessing even the hardest of the hardcore Forza fans of the world would be willing to accept a free Carrera as at least partial compensation...

Need For Speed and Sports Illustrated have paired up to melt the minds of our nation's amorous and adrenaline-addicted young men. Need For Speed: The Run will feature a number of notable characters, including a pair of ladies based on genuine Sports Illustrated swimsuit models. Irina Shayk and Chrissy Teigen have lent their computer-generated effigies to the latest chapter in the Need For Speed saga. Shayk will play a rough-and-tumble girl who grew up in her father's mechanic shop while Teigen's character is cast as a wealthy, adrenaline-seeking party girl.

Shakespeare, it is not.

As Shayk so aptly puts it, the game is like stepping into a Michael Bay film. We'll reserve any retching until we actually get our hands on the game for a spell. In any case, the premise pits racers against one another in an illegal cross-country race from San Francisco to New York. High-speed shenanigans ensue, the law arrives and everyone has a good old fashioned dirty time. Hit the jump to check out the teaser trailer as well as a quick making-of video.
Continue reading Need For Speed combines SI swimsuit models and video games

Need For Speed combines SI swimsuit models and video games originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 14:58:00 EST.
Do you happen to be a gamer? Are you also a car fanatic? If that's the case, Electronic Arts has a message for you: We still have Porsche.

As we reported a short while ago, Electronic Arts happens to hold the licensing agreement to include cars and trucks from Porsche in its video games. Competitors routinely get permission from EA to include Porsche vehicles in their own games, but when Turn 10, makers of the Forza series, contacted EA in regards to the 35 Porsche models it planned to include in Forza Motorsport 4, EA declined.

That means there will be no Porsche 911, no Cayman and no Boxster in Forza 4. Not a Cayenne or Panamera to be found. It's a sad day for Porschophiles who prefer the Forza franchise over Need for Speed.

Apparently not content to leave well enough alone, Electronic Arts has uploaded a new video to YouTube showing real in-game footage of the 2012 Porsche 911 Carerra S in its latest game, Need for Speed: The Run. A none-too-subtle jab at Forza, no? Check out the video after the break.
Continue reading Electronic Arts reminds us it still has Porsche in Need for Speed series

Electronic Arts reminds us it still has Porsche in Need for Speed series originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Sep 2011 19:58:00 EST.
There were going to be 35 Porsches in Forza Motorsport 4, but now there will be precisely zero. Kind of. In the video game world, some developers own the rights to a brand, and Electronic Arts owns the rights to have Porsche appear in any other game. When the Stuttgart brand appears in a non-EA game, it's because the other developer paid EA a licensing fee. That's what Turn 10 did with the previous Forza games and expected to do with FM4.

EA has other ideas, informing Turn 10 that it won't allow the rival developer to license any Porsches. That takes almost three dozen Stuttgart runners out of the controllers of enthusiasts around the world when FM4 launches in October. It has been suggested that EA is building a fence around its Shift and Need for Speed franchises.

The smackdown does not apply to RUFs, however, so there will be three fettled models that originated in Stuttgart and were finished in Pfaffenhausen. The other 35 cars will be replaced by various makes and models.
Forza Motorsport 4 wants to include Porsche models, EA says "Nein!" originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 08:28:00 EST.
A company's livery is an important part of its image. If a brand has done a good job of things, you can generally tell its wares by its color scheme or logo without the need to spell out names. When we think of famous liveries, images of Martini & Rossi, John Player Special and Silk Cut-clad racing machines pop into our head. If you live in Minnesota, however, you might prefer the green and yellow scheme belonging to the farm equipment czars at John Deere. One couple in particular decided to highlight their mid-80's John Deere Turbo 6620 combine in a rather unique way.

Are you familiar with the term ghost riding? For the three percent of our readership isn't, allow us to explain. To ghost ride, is to put a vehicle in gear then exit it and walk or dance alongside it as it ambles along. (Full Disclosure: We don't really get it either).

Many have tried to ghost ride with all manner of vehicle, but this is the first time we can recall anyone ghost ride a John Deere combine. The couple's amusing video, which throws in Petey Pablo's Need for Speed for good measure, is posted after the jump.
Continue reading Ghost ride the whip, John Deere combine edition

Ghost ride the whip, John Deere combine edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 16:57:00 EST.
Everyone knows that street racing of any ilk is a recipe for disaster. Pushing a machine on public streets is an easy way to end an innocent life, which is why we love the Need For Speed franchise so much. The games allow to take to virtual tarmac to scratch our persistent illegal go-fast itch. NFS has officially released a trailer for its next title, Need For Speed: The Run, which pits high-dollar metal against each other in a race from Los Angeles to New York. Gamers who opt for the limited-edition game can sink their teeth into three unique cars, too.

Those include the mighty Lamborghini Aventador as well as the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the yet-to-be-unveiled Porsche 911 Carrera S. We even get a few quick shadowy glances at the Porsche during the teaser. The game looks to promise plenty of fender-to-fender action, crashes and death defying feats of driving skill. Hit the jump to check out the trailer for yourself.
Continue reading Need For Speed franchise gears up for The Run with trailer

Need For Speed franchise gears up for The Run with trailer originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 12:32:00 EST. If you're getting bored of the racing games that are relegated to the track, the Need For Speed franchise is hoping to grab your attention with The Run. The new game, which doesn't hit stores until November 15, promises to mix hot rides with a healthy dose of drama. The premise is simple: The gamer will need to make their way across the country while bad guys and the law chases them all the while. In other words, its kind of like Smokey and the Bandit meets Fast and Furious, perhaps with a touch of Grand Theft Auto.

Hit the jump to watch the first trailer for the upcoming game. The clip is short and it doesn't reveal much, but we did catch a glimpse of an Audi R8, a Porsche Cayenne, a Mustang and even a Ford Taurus Police Interceptor. That's not a lot to go on, but the post-jump press release says gamers will "blow across borders, weave through dense urban traffic, rocket down icy mountain passes and navigate narrow canyons at breakneck speeds." Sounds like it could be fun.

It was a risky proposition: taking a series as fabled for its antics as Need for Speed and placing it into the cold, calculating hands of a simulation developer. That developer is Slightly Mad Studios, which has roots to the SimBin team that created the groundbreaking GTR on the PC. The resulting game was the first Need for Speed: Shift - truly a fresh title and, more importantly, a truly great racer, managing to straddle the console racing and simulation genres and do both admirably well.

Now, it's sequel time. Ian Bell, sim-racing guru and co-founder of Slightly Mad, said that this game has the "most advanced physics system ever released." We're not sure we'd go quite that far, but in testing this one we're quite confident in saying that this is certainly the most realistic Need for Speed game yet, which is perhaps why it's officially shedding that prefix and just billing itself as Shift 2 on the PS3, xBox 360, and PC. Still, not everyone will enjoy the punishment this game can offer, so read on to see whether this is one supercar sim that's for you.
